Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

Thinking of you petite.
Chisandy - sorry to hear about your cat's digestive ills. We have an 18 month old cat with a sensitive stomach. Trying to teach her to avoid the air vent on the floor. Hope you continue to test negative for Covid.
Mavericksmom - sorry to hear you have heater issues. Hope you get the problem resolved quickly. Glad you're having fun with DS and family. Your retirement countdown begins tomorrow.
Carole - sorry to hear DH is sick. I hope you were able to get him into the doctor today.
Betrayal - sounds like you had quite a feast for NYE and day. A vacation to South America and Antarctic sounds incredible. What a wonderful adventure.
Mcbaker - glad you got a chance to use the tub. Sounds like you're making great progress on your bike. What kind of bread are you making? My son makes lots of variety of bread.
For NY Eve, I made game hens for dinner. DH watched football and I fell asleep by 10. One of our neighbors shot off fireworks at some point. Another nice day today, although it's cloudy. We've been able to walk outside the past 5 days. Enjoy your day

New Year’s Eve was made wonderful by a big hug from Sandy when we met at Regalia. As soon as she walked into the restaurant I recognized her and she was as warm and scintillating as on these boards. And it was great to meet Bob and Gordy and Leslie. HK looked much younger and more fashionable than I had imagined. And Sandy, thank you for reassuring me about your Covid+ guest. Haven’t had the bivalent booster yet since getting Covid in September. Will get it soon. Hope Happy is much better. Hate it when Dahlia throws up.

This was a loaf of white bread. The recipe is fine for one or two people, with two cups of flour. I have also been experimenting with chia seed bread. Increased fiber. It is softly chewy.

Hi to all and so enjoyed all the entries. Hmmm, food. Well, we had Chili Mac with green beans (a bit of butter and lemon pepper on the beans) and iced tea. Then today just massive left overs with minute steaks. No one felt like much cooking and neither did I so we all took it easy.
Betrayal, your cruise does sound fantastic and long awaited. I hope all goes w/o a hitch for you.
Mary, I have done the same thing so many times. Glad the store was open today. Your bread sounds great. There is nothing like the smell of fresh bread in the oven. My Mom used to make sm. loafs all the time to share with others. I found a recipe for her for Tangerine Bread and it was always my favorite after the first time she made it. I usually go for most anything with an orange/tangerine flavor including just plain old orange jello.
Maverick, we have propane here at our house and haven't had any trouble with it ever. Started out with a big heat exchanger that sat out by the side of our house, but replacement was too costly so we replaced with a regular indoor furnace. Our gas Kenmore kitchen stove is also on propane as well as the instant on wall water heater. Hate to admit it, but I guess I never realized propane could cause issues. We never had any experience with propane until we moved to the lake in 98' and it is all we have had ever since. I hope your problems get resolved just because but also because we are having such odd weather patterns as well.
Keywest it is great that you were able to spend some time with Sandy and family at the restaurant. It is wonderful to meet friends made on these boards and I envy all of you that are able too.
It is pouring rain and likely will rain a lot through the night. We started out with thunder and lightning, but that has moved on and just left the rain.

HK came in today, declaring that she'd much rather deep-clean my house than keep cleaning up her DH (a nightly occurrence now) . Trying to stay one step ahead of Happy--making sure he stays off the comforter (easier said than done), and keeping a stack of used paper plates by my chair if I catch him licking his lips, which is a "prelude to the puke." (It''s a signal that he's suddenly tasting something icky). So far, so good--he only threw up once today, into the paper plate I held under his face. I might put a schmatta atop my comforter tonight so if he throws up on that, it's easier to blot and toss into the hamper and wash. I hope to keep testing negative too--if I test positive, my HK would need to stay away, and the thought of being trapped at home alone with a sick cat that I wouldn't even be able to take to the vet is just too depressing to contemplate.
Meanwhile, we're keeping the tree up till Epiphany (maybe even the 9th if our HK has to stay away). We'll keep the outdoor lights on through the winter, or at least till Daylight Saving Time. Then we'll disconnect the multicolored lights on the cedar out front. Bob likes the white lights on the magnolia, so they'll stay on year-round.

When I was a kid, our apt. bldg. was heated first with coal and later with oil--there was always a slight odor in the cellar besides the usual musty smell. When we moved to a 2-flat in a better neighborhood, the heat was natural gas. Ever since then, with the exception of the 7 years we spent in Seattle in an all-electric apt., everywhere we've lived has had natural gas heat. Even our grill is hooked up to the gas pipeline. But Bob's folks' house in Queens was oil-heated, and little did we know that years later they'd had a basement oil spill when the delivery truck overflowed the tank. (I guess that's why whenever we'd take them out to dinner, they insisted we pick them up out front).
Anyway, in Jan. 2007 my FIL had an angina attack during a visit by Bob, who immediately had him admitted to LIJ Hospital, then took two adjoining rooms at the Garden City Hotel and checked his 95-yr-old mom into one of them. Gordy & I caught the next flight to JFK. My FIL requested we bring him some personal things from home. When I returned and opened the door to retrieve the stuff, the petroleum stench was overwhelming--like I had stepped inside a fuel tank. I took the items, and we immediately called a cleaning service, to basically do whatever they could over the next few days. They wore masks the first day and a half until the oil smell was neutralized.

I would like to keep them up until Christmas season is officially over, but my sewing table in front of the window is the most logical place for them, and I need to sew. When writing, I like to keep the other half of my brain working too.
Six hours of sleep, and I am doing light time. With coffee. But time to get dressed and take Tippy for a walk.

I am a child of God, created by God and created to express spiritual attributes. I share a divine heritage with everyone I meet, and this awareness creates an atmosphere of goodwill in which I can grow and learn and achieve. Because I am a child of God, living and learning in a world of great possibilities, there is always hope—hope for what I desire to accomplish and hope for what I believe I can and will do. So whatever it is that I set out to do, I do it with the understanding that I am God's child. I know that I fit in and feel right at home with the rest of God's family. -unattributed

Not raining this morning which is a blessing. Not sure what it will do thru the day, but could have a tiny bit of sun although it won't last. Dh's brother is taking him to his eyelid surgery (I hope they will do it today, but it might have to come later) and I will stay home so I can keep to my meds schedule. I get messed up so easily and I don't see a huge reason to go other than to keep BIL company while the appt. is actually taking place.
So, I'll be able to work around here as well which will be good.
I hope you all have a good day.

Raining today, which would have been a disaster for my hair appt--but I posponed it because I'm having symptoms. Throat started feeling scratchy & postnasal drippy yesterday afternoon; by evening I was coughing but not yet feverish, But woke up today with 100.7, so I rapid-tested again (twice, BinaxNOW and leftover OnGo): still negative. Gordy called today to say he tested positive and Leslie "probably" has it too. Bob called from work: he's feeling fine, just tested negative and will be re-tested Thursday. I canceled a bunch of self-indugence appts (hair, nails) and instead am heading out to NorthShore Immediate Care for a PCR test to settle things once and for all--and get that all-important Paxlovid Rx if positive. In the unlikely event I'm negative for COVID & flu, I'll just have to hunker down and deal with my first actual cold in over 3 years. (Flu is unlikely, as the fever's not high enough and it didn't hit me like a ton of bricks). Thus far, everyone at the party who tested positive did not get a bivalent booster or flu shots. Bob & I got both. (But my sis in VA did too, and she still got a breakthrough infection, albeit asymptomatic).
I messaged my primary and he replied I'm proceeding exactly as he'd have advised me. Meanwhile, I'm masking around both my HK and Bob when he gets home from work.
If I have to take Happy to the vet, the tech can always come out to the car and get him in his carrier--so I don't have to put those inside at risk.

Been overcast with slight drizzles for past 2 days but temps have been in the 50's-60's so not damp. Just yucky weather. I have been doing genealogy research without much luck but keep trudging along hoping for a break. It is a welcome distraction from the weather and keeps my mental synapses charged. My co-conspirator/researcher is also running into roadblocks with her lineage so we commiserate with each other.
When we moved into this house it had oil heat and our previous home had gas heat, so it was a new experience to have an oil delivery. I find that the oil heat is cleaner than our experience with the gas which dirtied the walls around the ducts. We replaced the oil tank in the basement when we rehabbed it. The newer one is triple lined and has a 40 plus year warranty. The original stove was electric and I absolutely hate electric cooking. It had those coils that either got too hot or not hot enough. I grew up using gas so it was a hard adjustment. It was a GE stove with a double oven, one of which was so small you could only cook maybe a loaf of bread in it. So when we rehabbed the kitchen we installed a propane stove with an electric oven and I am happy with it. Our generator also runs off propane and it has been the best thing we ever did considering how often we lose power during winter or summer storms. When we had the above ground pool for the children we also had a propane heater for it since the water was usually cold due to the shade. So our experience using propane dates back more than 30 years and we love it. We get a delivery maybe once a year since we have 2 tanks but they are never empty. For us it has been economical.
DD and DSIL are critter watching while we are away. They do not mind since we keep our house a tad warmer than they keep their all electric home. So I gave them free access to whatever they want from the freezer for meals. I have one of those seal-a-meal systems and buy in bulk at Costco. Then I split it into meals for 2 versus meals for more than 2. I have packs of homemade chicken ala king, spaghetti sauce, etc. so they can just thaw and eat as well as things they would have to thaw and cook to make a meal. The pantry is also well-stocked and DH got DSIL his strawberry preserves for PBJ's so they are good to go. They bring their menagerie here: dog, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, betta who like being warmer as well. It's like the peaceable kingdom here with all the animals. Their dog has issues with mine and the cats so they keep him isolated. At his age he doesn't mind the separation.
Hope everyone has a good day.

I keep hoping we’ll see the sun. It’s been warm again today -in the 50s with light rains, At least we were able to take a walk outside. I was glad to have had my REIKI therapy this morning. I was feeling so lethargic. Was hoping she could pump some energy into me. Felt better afterwards.
I hope your rains have stopped Illinois. At least it’s not seasonably cold. Sorry to hear that you’re sick Sandy. I hope you’re able to find out if you have covid or not and get treatment. Love your “prelude to a puke”. Sounds like a punk song from the 70s.
We had hot water baseboard circulated heat in our first house we purchased in 1978. The house a small 2 BR, but perfect for just DH and I. We had an AC unit in the living room that could cool most of the house if a fan was strategically placed in the hallway.
I hope everyone has an enjoyable, healthy evening.

Well, no surprise--I PCR-tested positive today. (Reinforces my belief that when it comes to antigen tests, only a positive one is reliable). On Paxlovid now , but the reduced dose of the nirmatrelvir component due to my GFR being too low. Trying valiantly to stay hydrated, but my capacity seems low. I have no appetite at all, not even for no-nos. This feels far worse than the Omicron BA.1 I had a year ago. (NP says it's almoat certainly XBB.1.5--if so, it's not only more transmissible, but has a much shorter incubation period--in my case, 36 hrs., and the fever is higher & more stubborn, with a pesky cough resembling what I had with parapertussis in Dec. 2019). I took a nap upstairs--and I heard Happy attempting to puke on the scatter rug. But I was so tired I figured I'd clean it up later so he could sleep on me to comfort himself. When I got up I saw the rug was dry--but he was in the process of urping up on the foot of the big comforter. Sigh. Paper towels & Lysol wipes until Monday, when it'll be safe for my HK to return if she stays ok. Thus far, Bob has tested negative at work, but will be re-tested Thursday. I'm terrified--I don't feel well enough tonight to take care of myself, much less Happy. If Bob gets sick I have no idea what to do.
My BFF also home-tested positive--but she's had so many SEs from meds for RA & scleroderma that she can't take Paxlovid, only molnupiravir. Meanwhile, her DH's doc hasn't picked up any of his messages (phone or portal). I told her to roust him out of bed and get to a NShore Immediate Care clinic, which has his chart & meds on file. The window is closing--he's 68 and has early Parkinson's.

Are you balanced? Do you share your time, your energy, your life, as much with yourself as you do with those around you? Know your limits. You are one of the most important people you need to look after and love. Balance your time, your energy, your life with those around you. You'll be able to give more freely and joyfully as a result, and you'll be more open to the gifts of the universe. It's not wrong to give to others. But it's okay to say yes to ourselves, too.

Sandy, hoping your BFF takes your advice asap. After that I hope you are fortunate and are able to overcome the new variant. I had just finished a little read up of XBB 1.5 so hearing your descriptions is eye-opening. Hope Bob is able to stay well because the lethargy the variant causes would be dauting under the best of circumstances it sounds like.
It is a dreary day so far, but I don't think rain is predicted. Cooler likely. It was about 60 or so yesterday. Those are the kinds of temps we have (if we don't have an errant snowfall) in February. Sigh. Long time since we have had seasons we can count on. Last few yrs. have remained in-definite for patterns.
Praying all stay well and have mostly positive events taking place.

Feeling a bit better today as the Paxlovid kicks in--and I made it through the night (a solid 8 hrs) without having to get up and take a cough suppressant. XBB.1.5 isn't necesarily more serious than its predecessors--just far more contagious over a shorter time period; and though the bivalent booster (even in the context of "hybrid immunity") doesn't seem to prevent infection, it still does make the symptoms easier to deal with till the memory "killer" T-cells can get to work on it. It just is a lot more "evasive" of prior immunity you may already have gotten, but it doesn't put us back to "square one" like we were in 2020. I'm just going to have to be vigilant about not relapsing. (Recent research suggests that "rebound" actually occurs more often in untreated cases of the Omicron lineage than among those who took Paxlovid--I didn't get a "rebound" last year).

Sandy, hoping you improve quickly, and Bob avoids it. Poor cat barfing all over is just too much, thankful you can wash everything.
I’m also one of the don’t ask “what next” folks because things can get worse. I noticed my tooth had a dull pain, so I checked my insurance for coverage down here. I thought for sure I’d need a root canal, it’s a crowned tooth, so searching for an endodontist. I had to see a dentist prior to endodontist. Unfortunately for me the coverage lead me to Aspen dental. In NY I’d never ever go there and should have stuck to my guns but being in pain and wanting an endo I went. They did a full mouth X-ray and then 18 separate X-rays of the same teeth, obviously abuse my insurance coverage. I won’t bore you with all details but let’s just say they had 3 minutes before I exploded and left. The dentist said they couldn’t save the tooth, they’d need to pull it, I’d need a bone graft and an implant. I said NO. Then the office manager took me in her office, I requested copies of the X-rays which she gave me. But then she was filling out papers and I heard her say oral surgeon. I asked what about an oral surgeon? She said that’s what the dentist says I need. I said I’m not getting any of that done HERE. Needless to say I left. I’m contacting my dentist in NY to hope she can see the X-rays or that I can send the copies. I’d fly back if need be. If I could use a bridge or a partial or anything besides “lose the tooth for a bone graft and an implant.” Just wild and confirmed why I don’t go there. So shame on me for going.
At almost midnight I felt hot. Didn’t feel like a hot flash, haha, just too warm. I check the thermostat and it’s not receiving any electricity, no readings. I go out in the garage to reset the circuit breaker, and it started back up for a bit. Then off again. So outside I go w partner, flash lights on, making noises in case an animal might be out there. I pull the AC drain pipe off the house and water pours out. The AC unit did what it’s supposed to do, shut off if water fills the drip pan. But GEEZE LOUISE I think I’m supposed to yell UNCLE to make it stop.
Quick show of my lack of memory: betrayal major trip ahead, sounds great to me! Mavericksmom retirement is calling you, and you’ll love it. IllinoisLady I hope you get som sunshine. Petite, I wish we lived closer so I could reach out with a hug. The rest of our gang, I read it all, remember a lot, but no so much of who wrote it.
Family went home Monday, 7:15 in morning we drove them to the airport. I came home, after only sleeping 4 hours, and started the cleaning process. Love that iRobot, major help. Next night I slept almost 9 hours. Unheard of but felt great. It’s been warm and sunny since Saturday.

Thank you wonderful ladies. It is a week today and still feels unreal. I am sleeping through the night, eating 3 meals+ a day, taking my old lady walk, going to the gym and trying to accomplish something each day. I am following your posts.
mistyeyes, I sent you a PM

Pour forth all the odor, color, charm, and happiness you have to all your friends, to your home, to your daily society, to the poor and sorrowful, the joyous and the prosperous. Charm the world by love. Brighten darkened lives, soften the rude, make a sunshine of peace in stormy places, cover the faults and follies of people with the flowers of love. Love others, and you will spread the delight of youth over all you meet, and in doing so you will live intensely: for you will have within not only your own life, but also the lives of all whom you bless by love. That is the best religion, the very life of God. That is to be at one with him whose smile kindles the universe, whose love, moving in the spring, is the beauty that enchants our senses and heart, and inspires our soul. -Stopford A. Brooke

So sorry you have Covid Sandy. Glad to hear Paxlovid is helping. Hope Bob and HK stay well. Sorry to hear about your tooth issue Cindy. Years ago, I had a root canal that cracked a tooth. Ended up getting the tooth pulled and a dental implant. The whole thing took a year. I had wonderful oral surgeon.
Heading to have lunch with friends today. We started getting together when we all retired - 3 of us. We try to meet monthly as our schedules permit.
I hope everyone has a healthy and peaceful day.

((((((Petite)))))) Thanks for checking in. It is hard to try and re-establish normalcy when your whole existence is upset with a major loss. If I recall correctly, I went around after Mom died feeling like I was doing pretty good, but it was the third month that made me realize nothing was ever going to be truly 'normal' again and I was going to have to find a way to re-adjust the sails so as to move on. In time, the smiles return as well as cherished moments and thoughts. It just takes however long for each person to get there.
It looks like it may/could be nice today. There are some clouds, but they may not completely stop the sun. Sure, hope that is the case. Much less wind today so another bonus. Hope that lasts. I few chores today but dreading the calls I need to make. I do not enjoy talking on the phone. Not sure when that started but in part, I'm sure it is for THOSE kinds of calls. Once in a while when I find it is one of THOSE calls, I just break out with saying " and to whom do I have the pleasure of telling to get lost today". Not the greatest approach, but a stress reliever for me. Still, so many calls come (a lot of the calls are designated spam now, but some still get through), that I've worked up a dislike for answering the phone and using the phone. Getting automated choices don't do much for me either.
So far, we seem to be okay with covid issues and flu in our county, but I don't see reports daily anymore. Maybe I need to resub to the county. I see very few people with masks around here anymore. Sure hope we are able to continue to avoid ANY infections.
Cindy glad you got some good rest after your company and that you are able to find/get a good outcome to your dental issues. Seems like there are a whole lot of salespeople in some dental offices.
Hope you all have a really good day.

petite1: (((Hugs))).
Cindyny: Sorry to hear about the tooth issues. I have had dental implants after loss of a tooth/teeth with a root canal and then cap. Have not had an issue with the tooth/teeth since. My dental implants were done by an oral surgeon and done in the office. It was partially covered by my insurance then. Do not regret this decision because I had a partial bridge at one time and it did serious damage to other teeth, alignment and regret that decision to this day.
Sandy: Sorry to hear you are under the weather and hope you feel better soon. Glad you could get Paxlovid while it is still covered by government. Unfortunately, they are stopping payment coverage and it seems Medicare will not pay for it. Its out of pocket expense is quite high meaning most seniors won't be able to afford it. Funny how Medicare will pay for your hospitalization but not the preventative measures to avoid hospitalization.
Sun is breaking through after several gray and overcast days. Temps still in the 50's so it feels like spring. Spent yesterday trying to decide what outfits will go in suitcase for cruise. It is difficult to plan for seasonal changes from 80's to 30's, informal versus formal wear (no, I do not take a gown; no room), footwear, and not to exceed 50 lb. weight limit. Will wear some of the heavier, bulky items needed for cold weather such as parka and boots. Flying in to Santiago, Chile where temps are supposed to be in the 80's. So dressing in layers we can shed when we arrive.
Jackie, loved your response to those annoying calls we all get. I had fun with a girl one day who called about home repairs and started with windows. I told her my house came with windows, she paused and then offered a roof. I told her the house had one as well, then she offered another...(you get the drift) she never caught on and I had so much fun. They never called again so I guess my name was taken out of that data base. We have call blocked a number of them and use the answering machine (yes, we still have on for the house phone) as a screening tool.
Learned today my cousin's DH has been dx with cancer in his spine and hip. He has been having issues with knee pain and had 2 knee replacements many years ago. Was told they could not offer him a knee replacement again. They were at a party when he yelled and collapsed to floor. Initially thought he broke a hip. I will reach out to her via email since I am not on FB. He has had cardiac issues as well and she is not in the best of health with hypertension, back pain related to a car accident many years ago and diabetes. She also has a hx of depression.
Need to run some errands so off I go. Have a good day.
BTW: When is this site supposed to see the new changes that will make it so much better? Seems same old, same old to me.

Sandy, So sorry you had to go through this and so happy you are starting to feel better and so glad you went to Immediate Care and got Paxlovid and so delighted we met on NYE, though Covid cast its evil pall. Hope Gordy and Leslie and all are feeling better

A big hug and encouragement to you Petite. One day at a time sounds like what you're doing -perfect.
I got through one of the harder days for a breast cancer survivor. Mammogram day. My Dr. Writes it as a DM so at least I quickly got the news " no evidence of malignancy." Brad's 2. I did a little bit of "relief shopping" and had a glass of Francis Coppola Cabernet with dinner. I'm also planning a lighter day tomorrow. These things always get me more worked up than I like to admit.
0 -
Petite - joining in - you are in my thoughts.
reader - Hooray for 'no evidence'. There's never a time that we'll be blase about tests again. Maybe just pile up in a recliner tomorrow with a good book.
betrayal - I too still have a landline with a separate answering machine. If it says "unknown number" - I just don't answer. Anyone who really knows me is aware they have to start talking to the machine & I'll pick up if I'm home.

Paxlovid is working its magic on my symptoms, but this time I'm getting its side effects. (I do not recommend it as a weight control device--in fact, if ever Ozempic, which has similar SEs, is offered to me I will say "thanks but no thanks"). 2 days on it to go. After-hours on-call NS Immed. Care doc texted me to stop it and call "a provider in the morning." By the time the text arrived, I'd already taken my evening dose, so I'll call in the morning before starting Day 4. I suspect it may have been exacerbated by having Bob's leftover linguine aglio e olio with broccoli tonight on a stomach that's been mostly empty since Tuesday. More details? TMI.

I went to the dentist day before yesterday, and my blood pressure was 145/?. My morning headaches have been worse, strained muscle in my neck on the left side, minor chest pain which does not persist, I think it is eased by food or antiacids. Did my blood pressure yesterday twice, and both times was around 150/100. Will be calling for an appointment today. Looks like the family curse has started. Will go to the gym probably after my appointment. Unless it is after silver sneakers.
Did not get any writing done yesterday. Had a bath last night. BP was 120/? this morning, although I woke up with my body totally alert.
ETA With PCP (!) at around noon!!

Our problem is that we make the mistake of comparing ourselves with other people. You are not inferior or superior to any human being… You do not determine your success by comparing yourself to others, rather you determine your success by comparing your accomplishments to your capabilities. You are "number one" when you do the best you can with what you have, every day. -Zig Ziglar

Mary, that blood pressure. I hope you can figure out the issue w/o too much problem. I think it is sometimes difficult to handle so hopefully addressing it immediately will be a valuable asset for you.
We have definite sun this morning although cool again. Hoping for no wind since 44 or so can be fine in sun w/o wind. Hoping to be productive today. It is something of a sad day in thinking back two yrs. ago today.
Hoping to get THOSE calls done with the first one already out of the way. We do have landline and answer machine. I often have to check since my little ofc. is no longer in that bedroom. Dh uses the room now and often forgets to check.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Parakeets are exceptionally noisy this morning. Bickering amongst themselves for whatever reason. There at times when we are having a meal that they become very musical and the family joke is to pretend we are at Disney in the Tiki Room with the bird chorus. There's is much nicer but it can be pleasant to hear them when they are musical or just chirping softly.
Started out overcast with showers again but now the sun is trying to peek through. Packing is nearly done with just last minute items to add to the bag such as toiletries. Always a challenge to decide just what to pack to cover multiple contingencies and making sure there is some coordination to minimize amount of clothing.
Heard from my cousin and news was not good. Her DH has cancer in multiple sites and is stage 4. No treatment plan but they have floated chemo and radiation as possibles. Not sure of primary site yet. She lost her adopted son to liver ca and that devastated her. Keeping my fingers crossed this buys him some quality time with her.
Hope all have a wonderful day.
