I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness; I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too. I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more.

Garage repair was adequate- he tried the upsell. It’s a vinyl door and he says they don’t make vinyl garage doors anymore. Told me to try to get the soot off it ASAP because if I power wash too hard it can go down to a “pink” tinge underlay. But he did get it on track correctly, put in more screws, straighten it all out, and lubricated the rails.

Today gf’s we’re coming over before my endo appointment. But yesterday the FL gf showed up; Tuesday not Wednesday. Long story short she discombobulated the days. One other gf made it over, and we did get to catch up but my house had gifts on dining room table, my toiletries bag laying out on a radiator, etc. We sat in my front porch - which I hadn’t been in since late May, early June - dusty, dirty… but as old gf’s are, no one cared but me. I gave it a good cleaning today! I’ve got 2 area rugs stored out there. It’s time to use them, or sell them, or give them away.

I’m leaving soon for the endodontist. Fingers crossed I can get a root canal vs the tooth being cracked. I want to keep the tooth. After braces, teeth pulled first them, I have 24 teeth - 12 upper, 12 lower. I don’t want to lose any.

Cooler weather now & next couple of days. Summer seems over and fall is knocking!

Betrayal, pack a raincoat or waterproof windbreaker and fleece something to put underneath. Glacier Bay was cold and we had rain in one port. We did an Alaska cruise when I worked at Holland America. Beautiful scenery

wren44, thank you for the info. I bought a fleece lined raincoat at Costco and plan on packing it. They only had gray ones and then I see online they have it in blue, too. So I ordered it as well. May let DD use one since they are longer coats and will keep upper legs dry. Like that the zipper can be opened from bottom as well as top for when you need to sit. I bought them large so I could layer underneath as well.

We are veteran HAL members and took a similar cruise when we finished our land tour of Alaska and the Canadian Rockies. It was summer then and DH actually wore shorts on the ship it was so warm. It was our first cruise with them.

I weeded fern bed today and came up with a plan of how to get the bushy sticker plants out without being totally covered with them. I weeded around the base, pulled it out of the ground, then put a large lawn bag over my hand inside out, and picked it up by the roots. As I was pulling it in the bag I could then push the bag up to cover the bush. Voile.

Did get some stickers on my fleece sleeves and on the front of my shirt, but was able to remove and dispose of them. Threw out the gloves because the elastic backs were covered with stickers. So it is done except for placing the rocks back where they belong and sweeping the slate walkway. That will take less than an hour tomorrow.

DH decided to mulch the lower section of this secret garden for me but he won't finish today. Tomorrow we will use the last of the mulch to finish the lower section and to spread in the landscaped are where we had the most weeds. There is pachysandra there so we only need to do a light spread. This should finish up the last 7 bags we have between these 2 areas. Weather permitting we will be done the weeding and mulching for this year. YEAH!

It was 66 degrees when I went out at 11:20, and now at 2:25, it is 71 degrees. Sunny, with a nice breeze that helped keep you from sweating excessively. Lovely day and tomorrow is supposed to be pretty much the same. I want to mop kitchen floor and clean kitchen today.

They paved our section of the road today so we are housebound until they open the road. Not sure if it will be today. DH parked a street over after walking the dog this morning, He has a derm appointment early tomorrow so he will walk the dog after his return. Glad we will no longer have to deal with the pothole that was covered by the yellow paint stripes. It has probably been 10 years since they last did this and we have so much traffic now that it is used as a shortcut to work and other housing areas. It was really in rough shape and the end of the road is in worse shape. Not sure when they will do that. It is like riding over a rumble strip.

cindyny, glad the garage door has been repaired and his info about cleaning the soot off is probably good. I'd try Dawn because soot is greasy and it is not abrasive. What's a little dust among friends? They didn't come to see if your house was clean and orderly, but for your company. Glad you had a good visit. Hope your tooth is salvageable.

Hope everyone has a great day and waving hello to everyone.

Petite - wishing you good news with your cancer center visit this week.

Cindy - happy to hear the garage door is fixed.

Betrayal - I continue to be amazed at your gardening. I’m sure it looks fantastic. You finished just in time to go on a well deserved vacation.

Low 70’s with a slight breeze and partially overcast today. Perfect for a bike ride. I was still sweaty but less so than usual.

    Waving hello to all!

Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.

Betrayal, our road is being paved too. The signs said 8/20-27, but yesterday they changed it to 8/28. And they started a little after 7 this morning for the actual paving. I woke to the heavy equipment noises.

Yesterday would have been my mother’s 105 bday, so I was hoping for some of her luck at the endodontist. But no, the tooth isn’t salvageable. He explained the CT scan and X-rays very well. I have 4 roots on this molar, 3 would hold a root canal, the 4th is infected and CT shows decay under the crown and infection at the tip of that root. I could have cried, or beat the hell out of someone - UGH. I did neither but it sure added more stress to my life.

He put me on an antibiotic, which I’m starting today. My dentist needs to contact me- I called and left a message yesterday. Next my guess is an oral surgeon, which I see my insurance lists many in my area. But the whole process of pulling it, and possibly getting an implant won’t happen here. We leave in about 2 months for Florida. I think I’d have to heal for 8 weeks. I’m jumping the gun on what ifs, but there is never an opportune time to get this done.

Whine whine whine, I’ll figure it out.

It was 59 when the road crew woke me, we’re up to 59 now. Looks like a high 75-76 but not until 3-4 pm. Falls knocking!

Cindy, so sorry about the tooth. Same thing happened to Gordy (DS); he had to have that 2d molar pulled but the dentist & oral surgeon say it's not a critical tooth and may not be worth it to get an implant or bridge (his insurance doesn't cover implants).

Betrayal, so excited for that cruise! The whole 7 years we lived in Seattle, we wanted to take the Inside Passage but couldn't afford the cost, nor the time off. (By the time I was making enough money, we were both working long hours, Bob's including the typical 4th-yr med student shifts).

Restoration company is yanking me around schedule-wise. Were supposed to come Monday or Tuesday, but Monday night they called to say Wednesday. Then yesterday morning (after we woke up early to prepare to go over there), their project mgr. said tomorrow—and that the crew supervisor didn't have scheduling authority. Went over (alone, Bob decided to do his CME online all day), blitzed my way through all the boxes in the office and a few in the dining room. Today is self-care day: mani-pedi, then finally getting my roots done and a haircut (still gonna keep it no shorter than shoulder-length). Afterwards, I'll go over and break down all those empty boxes to make room for the next loads. They still haven't returned the glass shelves for audio racks and china cabinet, kitchen stuff (dishes, cookware, small appliances other than espresso machine), nor all the boxes (likely mislabeled) for basement and pass-through room. Cleaners called, and they're dropping off the clothes (and the drapes they salvaged) Wednesday. (Monday I play Fox Valley, Tuesday I get my molar crown). That should be everything—the restoration company said they'll clean up after themselves and put everything where it belongs. Every piece of furniture in the office is in the wrong place (and when they tagged them they put the wrong description and even function).

Still crickets from the public adjuster (who claims that he tried to get SF to pay for holdover rent—which would require admitting he and the contractor were negligent in delaying). The contractor is his buddy (he speaks Polish too, though born here) and he is also defensive about the paint job and will likely also be when I point out the inferiority of the fixtures (the Glacier Bay stainless steel sink is thinner gauge than my original Elkay and is already showing rust spots). In a way, I'm impugning his own expertise & integrity….justifiably, IMHO. Whenever I tell people about the fixtures, they all have stories to tell about their own bathroom & kitchen renovations—when I mention "Glacier Bay," they roll their eyes knowingly. I might have to eventually hire Studio 41 and pay through the nose. Speaking of which, we just paid September's rent.

Carole, I forgot to mention I did try “Pips” in the NYT puzzles. I can do the easy one, but the medium one takes me some time. I could spend hours doing all their puzzles! I didn’t try the hard one.

I tackled the front porch today. I had to climb over the couch to start in the corner window- what a mess. I took rags and Windex with some paper towels too. I had ant poison adhere itself to the sill, I needed my 5 in 1 tool to scrape it off - and some paint came with it.

I was going along good for about 7 windows. On the one sill I had a bag of sea salt from a Puerto Rico salt flat, and it sat in a metal decorative leaf. I went to pick up the bag on its own, and the bag disintegrated in my hand. The sun does that. Salt poured onto the floor. I picked up what I could and vacuumed up the rest. It’s another - no good deed goes unpunished.

    IMG_1238.jpeg

Next was to take my mini chainsaw to the burnt up fence. I planned on cutting it down to small pieces, bagging it to dispose of it. Well there is more than you think when you cut it into small pieces. I was covered in soot, a board smacked my shin - cutting it. I came inside & cleaned up, washed it, triple ointment and a bandaid. Back out I went. Right now my battery is recharging - me & the chainsaw. Ha! I couldn’t stand looking at the burnt up stuff any longer. How my neighbor hasn’t done a thing in over 3 weeks is beyond me. Fire was on 8/3. My excuse is Ireland. And that’s my story.

It’s 76 and sunny. A great day to be out doing something.

I paid for implants out of pocket and have no regrets about the procedure or the cost. I had several root canals fail after several years and wish I had just skipped that process. Had to have bone graft on upper jaw with sinus reduction due to bone loss after bridge failure. Would never do a bridge again due to it causing bone loss. Leaving a space after tooth extraction can cause shifting of teeth, too.

cindyny, sorry about the tooth issue and hope you can get it taken care of to your satisfaction.

Sandy, and the beat goes on. I would raise cain about the replacement fixtures since they are not of the same quality as what you had prior to the fire. When they told me they were going to replace the door knobs with ones from Home Depot at $20 each and what I had was Baldwin Brass at $75 (cost at the time they replaced it) each we had words. They broke the door knob. I know that SF usually replaces what you had and I would be checking out what is on the punch list they provided. It should be updated with the new product and the cost. Your public adjuster is not worth the space he occupies. He's supposed to be working for you and it seems he is not.

I was able to recycle the ones that weren't broken and they had to buy one replacement. I keep a record of all home improvements by room, year and what was done. So I had all the paint colors. manufacturer, date done, etc. I use SW for walls and only Benjamin Moore white for woodwork because it doesn't yellow. I used to do the painting, so I justified the cost because the labor was mine and I only wanted to do it once on my time schedule. None of the rooms have paint that is more than 10 years old. If we updated a room, like the baths, I kept all the paper work on what was done, who the manufacturer was , etc. I had a problem with one of the Kohler toilets, contacted them and they provided the replacement part at no cost. DH broke one of the glass shades on a bathroom lamp and they sold me the replacement parts at a reasonable price.

Finished mulching the lower section of the secret garden and it took 4 more bags in addition to the 3 DH spread yesterday. I used the last 4 bags left to mulch in the landscaped, fenced area in the spots that had the tallest weeds. I could put more in here but it's enough. I considered mulching the section not included in the fence because I did not like the quality of the mulch they used. It is already decomposing, and it was only installed in late May. I am holding off for now, but DH could do this area while I am away. It would probably take 10-15 bags. From the road it doesn't look bad.

Went to Uno's for a late lunch/early dinner. It was a nice break.

DD and DSIL went to Kohl's and he found a dressy dress on the clearance rack for DD. He has good taste. It was marked down by 50%. She sent me photo and it would be great for the cruise. The items on the rack were also reduced by another 50% so she got the dress for less than $15. Said she found something for me as well and will bring it on Saturday. DH is going to an outdoor concert with them. It is a cover band for a group he likes, but not one I care for, so I will stay home and enjoy being alone.

Ordered tires for DH's car from Costco and set up appointment for when I return from the cruise. Finishing second load of wash for today and will sweep kitchen eat in area. Mopped the kitchen yesterday, but this is hardwood so just needs sweeping. Seem like I am always doing this due to fur and feathers.

Hope everyone had a great day. It was sunny and 70 with a good breeze but you could work up a sweat easily. A tad more humid than yesterday.

    Waving hello to everyone.

Cindy - sorry to hear about the tooth. This has been a rough couple of weeks for you - first the fire and now the tooth. At least your have the trip to Ireland for good memories to balance out the bad.

Sandy - I had the 4 bicuspids pulled when I was 12 followed by braces. My teeth were okay until a few years ago when they started shifting. It’s not terribly noticeable so I don’t plan to do anything about it at this point. My son had orthodontics in elementary school with a retainer afterwards. He had a palate expander so no teeth were pulled. All was good until his late teens when a growth spurt resulted in an underbite and a cross bite. So he had more orthodontics in college along with jaw surgery which was a 3 year process. The surgery was rough but he has a fantastic smile. Unfortunately 6 months prior to jaw surgery, my employer changed insurance. We had the surgery approved through the original insurance but the new insurance would not cover it. It ended up that insurance covered the hospital expenses and we paid the oral surgeon bill of $18,000. So while my son was in physical pain, DH and I were in financial pain. No regrets and we’d do it again.

I had braces too at 12 yrs old, with 8 teeth pulled. Sadly I think back then it was my general dentist that pulled the teeth. I have a small mouth, and back then it was very crowded. As my eye teeth came in, they had no where to go. Full mouth of metal braces, and I had to use rubber bands too. After they came off I had a retainer.

Harley, your son was put through the wringer. Sorry he had to endure that.

My dentist hasn’t gotten back to me yet. In fact I think they’re not working again until Tuesday. I’m in no pain, and undecided on what I should do - part in NY or wait for all in FL, so waiting until Tuesday for a call back is ok by me.

After cleaning out the front porch I was able to get rid of a box of Halloween decorations and a stereo rack with speakers. My grandnephew picked them all up last night. He makes a good buck reselling things, I think on eBay and also Marketplace. He was happy to get them, and I was happy to get rid of them.

I’m still falling asleep earlier than I’d like, and waking up earlier - usually after 5 to 6 hours of sleep. I do get a lot done LOL, but would prefer the sleep.

It’s raining, gray, and only 58. I’d like to cut up more of the burnt fence but not in the rain. Even better would be if the firehouse next door to me, and now a drinking place for retired volunteer fireman (or so they say), would allow us to put it in their dumpster. SO will have to ask one of the guys.

I feel like I should be hunkering down the house and yard for fall. But the weekend should be in the mid 70’s, so I’ll hold off on putting anything away.

    Enjoy your Friday!

petite1, great news on visit schedule and bone improvement.

wrenn44 and carole, the grand total of bags of mulch purchased and applied was 130. I must admit I had lost count but DH checked Home Depot receipts to get dates of purchases. I decided not to do the juniper bed or it would have been 150 bags total. I do have nice "guns" from lifting those 40 lb. bags.

DH brought suitcase down and it appears that the upper corner of exterior pocket got snagged on something and ripped free on the top. I tried asking on Nextdoor if anyone could recommend someone to repair it. They gave me 2 local shoe repair places and I contacted the one who requested photos. I sent photos and he said he wouldn't be able to put it on his sewing machine due to the angle and location. Figured this was going to be the answer from the other place as well.

So I have some heavy duty thread, found my circular upholstery needle, and was able to repair it. Cost was 45 minutes of my time. It was a challenge because it involved keeping the zipper sandwiched between 2 pieces of the attachment while sewing it to the main body of the suitcase. I decided to sew one side of the attachment to the zipper figuring this would make it easier to reattach to the body of the suitcase. Then I was able to attach the other piece of the fabric to the main body and reattach the zipper by sewing through both layers. Hard to explain but it is now stronger than it was originally and hopefully won't get torn off again.

Lovely day, sunny with temp at 73. Low humidity, too. Would have been nice for mulching on those days that were not so nice.

harley07, feel for what your son endured to have nice teeth. Had a DB who had braces after breaking his 2 front teeth. They were finally capped but he had the wire on with rubber bands like cindyny. There were days when they were adjusted that he couldn't open his mouth so he drank soup through a straw. He never complained of being in pain, ever.

DD had a palate expander and then a removable brace. She kept losing the palate expander because she would stuff it in her pocket and it would fall out. She lost it at a car dealership and we did find it, but a car had run over it. They were not covered by insurance and cost me a small fortune. Her teeth were too large for her mouth, but she had no extractions because the dentist did not believe in doing them. It worked and her teeth look great.

cindyny, hope you can address dental issues where it is most convenient for you.

Hoping everyone has a great day. Waving hello to everyone.

I had cheap ortho. I had one tooth pulled, then wore rubber bands to close the space. That was on the right side of my lower. Then he cut off the tooth that corresponded to that one in my upper jaw, did a root canal, then made a narrow tooth to peg into that space. Even now the right sides of my jaws are shorter.

I am repairing the missals from church. Broken bindings. Had to go down to the library to find out how to do it. They will allow me to do only five at a time. LOL!!

canarycat, hope the new AI will be less problematic. I can't remember taking a break when I was switched, but that was awhile ago. Enjoy the weekend. A reunion bbq sounds like fun. Lovely cat.

Sandy, they probably spent more on packing boxes, bubble wrap and wrapping paper than on some of your replacement fixtures. Hopefully with all you pointed out to the contractor's rep, change will be effected to your satisfaction. Why would anyone exhaust a bathroom fan into a wall? Are they looking into a return for mold remediation? Sheesh, they sound more like bumblers than licensed contractors.

Glad you were able to do the hair and mani-pedi to make you feel better. Not sure I could eat at 10:30 at night and then go to sleep. Never been a late night eater and on cruises insist on early dinner for that reason.

Annoyed about the hoops one has to jump through to get the Covid vaccine this fall. I will see my new PCP to get a prescription before it is available but think this is an inconvenience for those who will have to contact their PCP through a portal and the demand on them.

The hummingbird was just hovering outside the bay window. He has been sitting on the Japanese maple for the past few days. Yesterday while I was watering the patio plants, I saw 2 males vying for the feeder. I do enjoy watching them. One is very shy and any movement spooks it. The other seems to take it in stride and ignores us. They will be leaving soon and DH won't be able to manage feeder while I am on cruise. He's back hovering, is he saying goodbye?

Weekend originally had no plans except for DH joining DD and DSIL for an outdoor concert. It's a cover band and not one I am fond of, so I passed. We will be going to the Sedona Tap house for dinner before they go and then DD got tickets for us to go see the Cirque Italia, a water show, tomorrow afternoon in Exton. I want to start planning what to pack now that suitcase is repaired.

cindyny, hoping the firemen will let you use their dumpster. Maybe buy them a round of drinks?

Hope everyone has a great day.

2/3 of my windows are covered with plastic film which breaks up the scenery into small iridescent shapes. The other day I saw, through Tippy's observation point, a hummingbird hovering, trying to figure if the window was a flower. He decided not, and flew away.

Yesterday I removed a bunch of buttons from Tippy's board, leaving those he uses frequently. He informed me that he was angry, and demonstrated which ones he wanted restored. One was "did" as we had used that in reviews of the day to teach him others, and I think that the other was "hurts."

  • Hi friends! I'm glad I found this forum. ust diagnosed at 72. Surgery scheduled 10/7 (lumpectomy, sentinel lymph node thngie (which I'm a little unsure about and might change my mind on), and woo-hoo for this silver lining, breast reduction!. My niece will come and help me for 3 days.

I've been living a very independent and reasonably active life. I have a lot of fears as we all do, especially loss of control andautonomy.

I'm still new to navigating around this web site so I hope I'll find my way back to y'all.

Welcome cat_guardian to our very friendly and supportive forum. Many of us are years beyond diagnosis and active treatment, but we still are available for a listening ear and advice.

So you can book mark this site which will make it easier for you to find us. We have had recent posters who have just begun their treatment and can share their experiences with you as well. Hope you'll return.

For peace of mind I would recommend you do the Sentinel node bx. Others may not agree, so I'll let them chime in. I would suggest you discuss this with your doctor for pros and cons.
