Links for Strontium. I too read about the calcium Patty. I stopped the Fosomax a year ago, after taking it for about 7 years. I will worry for many years to come as to the horrible side effects. It stays in your body for up to 20 years.

Althea-I learned years ago from some cooking show that if you get the pan hot, and then add the grease, then the food, it does not stick. I use coconut oil and a little dab of butter for my eggs OE and they never stick. As for the cholesterol, I am still not worrying about it so much. It is the homoesystine that is a better measure of inflammation. I think cholesterol is a bit over rated. Mine has gone up since I started eating healthier fats. I use to eat the bad trans fats. Now I mostly eat things like avocado and fish oils, and my cholesterol is higher, so I think the whole thing is a bunch of bunk. Vit D raises cholesterol too, so that may be the reason mine is higher. My good cholesterol is very good so that is all I am looking at.
I do not believe in taking calcium. Continuing weight bearing exercise is the best thing we can do for keeping our skeletal system strong. Magnesium is also helpful and hormone balance. Women lose bone strength when they lose estrogen. That is why I am so against all those estrogen blocking drugs. They block all estrogen, even the good ones. I swear the medical profession is trying to kill us with these drugs. The way our doctors have been influenced by big pharma is criminal. That is why I only go to chiros and ND's now. They can do all the tests, but cannot prescribe drugs.

Nan, the thing I find confusing about the Strontium is that it is recommended to take calcium but not at the same time. I go back and forth about taking some calcium or not taking any. I just wonder if the Strontium works without the calcium. I'm confused . Any thoughts??? What brand do you take? Thanks!

Lorraine, I have a friend who is just over a year out from being diagnosed with BC, just finished treatment and you know hair growing back in and now she has brain tumors. They told her 6-12 months. It is so terribly sad. So I feel for you. It makes me so mad I want to kill something. I have been screaming at God. It is not helping! F-ing cancer is right. UGH!!!
Vivre, I did not know that Vit D raised cholesterol? How interesting. Mine is always right at 200, but my "good" cholesterol is off the charts (thank you exercise and olive oil!) and my "ratio" is great. Interestingly, my Osteopath told me I should/could eat 6 eggs a week (I dont eat much meat) and she does not really give a hoot about cholesterol. She is looking at other things. It's all so very interesting. She told me never to take a "statin" type drug! LOL

Hi again! I just received great news from my surgeon this afternoon - MARGINS ARE CLEAR!!! (After my SECOND re-excision 2 days ago!) I'm so relieved to be done with surgery. (Sort of. I totally LOVE my surgeon and trust surgery... but I don't really like or trust the oncologists and their recommendations... I want to just stay with my surgeon, as illogical as that is. )
Sending you good thoughts for your scan, Patty!
Julia, I'm new to this thread and don't know you well, but I have really enjoyed your posts so far (I've seen you in other threads, too!), and I, too, really really hope you stay here!! It's okay to be sad/depressed here...
Thanks, Yazmin! I can really relate to this - "As soon as I was diagnosed, I "hit the ground running": changed my diet 360 degrees to include 5 to 13/14 servings of fruits/vegetable a day, and got started on well-research supplements (I got and I am still getting a whole lot of information on supplements from this very board. As a result of that, I am continuously adjusting/fine-tuning my supplementation regimen)."
That's what I've been doing, too. I'm already on a lot of anti-cancer supplements, stopped eating refined sugar a month ago, started following Dr. Servan-Schreiber's anticancer diet, etc. I figure, if I'm going to refuse chemo, I need to be instead making as many diet/lifestyle/environment changes as possible, and BIG changes, so that no one can accuse me of "doing nothing" to fight the cancer. Not doing chemo does NOT (have to) equal "doing nothing"!
Thermograms - I'm a believer! My uncle is a chiropractor, and has thermography at his office. When I fell off the trapeze, he checked me with thermography to assess my injuries, and then knew where/how to adjust me, and I was all better. I've never had a breast thermograph, but I'd much prefer it to mammos.
Coconut oil - How annoying that it might not be so wonderful, because I have a 52 oz jar of it in my pantry!!! (Found it on sale for 12 bucks and couldn't resist!) I had previously heard so many GREAT things about it, especially from the "Nourishing Traditions" book... sigh. My favorite use for coconut oil is to scoop some up (just in my hands!) and rub it all over a sweet potato, then put the sweet potato in the oven to bake, and rub the leftover oil into my hands like lotion.
Anon, I agree - it's so frustrating when there's conflicting information...just when we think we have a handle on something, it changes! This drives me crazy. Soy is good, soy is bad! Honey is good, honey is bad! Agave is good, agave is bad! AARRGHHH! And now coconut oil!

When we hear cabbage is good for ER+ BC girls....can it be cooked?
I remember part of an old fad diet was a cabbage soup made from cabbage, tomatoes, & onions that you reheated everyday....would THIS be a good idea...or is there something wrong with this too???? I remember trying that diet and liking the soup so was thinking if this form of cabbage is good then I could add peppers to it also. Looking for ways to get my veggies. Having trouble swallowing either of my vital greens potions.

Fairy-I will light a candle for your friend tonight. I'm sorry, for her, and you. I'm also lighting one to honor the poor guy in Texas who flew his plane into the IRS building today. He was so frustrated with the IRS. He'd be fighting with them for years. They had taken everything from him. I heard that he had burned his house down because they were going to seize it. He left behind a wife and child. This is what our world of black and white judgement has come down to-no grey logic allowed-no exception, no consideration, no morals. Too bad the FDA wasn't housed in the same building.
Luna-Hey, when you talk to God, please tell Him I'm still waiting for a call back

We are with you girl!!!!
I did not have any hot flashes last night! I have been taking myomin for three days now. Could it be working so fast? Also does it mean my hormones are balanced if I don't have the flashes??? I have been having them since dx and it feels so strange not to have any!!!!! I hope that is a good thing.
Love to all, Patty

Thank you for the prayers and spiritual help. Her name is Marlana. She is a lovely person. Lorraine, Yes, it does put things in perspective...
Did you all see this "Honest Food Guide" New Perspective on the Food Pyramid?

I thought this was interesting. What the food pyramid would be if big food, big business, etc., were out of the picture. hmm.

Also "Healing Cancer Naturally - A Holistic Approach".

Oh, Fairy and Spring, I'm so sorry. Here are candles for Tyler and Marlana. We'll send our spritual energy their way. We need to honor them with are caring. I've noticed that when people take a bad turn, others abandon them because they don't know what to say. We need to fix that.
Healing love to all...

Warm thoughts and candles being lit to both of your friends.
Patty- you too dear - tuesday right?

Yes, Anom. I have yet to hear from a dear friend who my daughters told I was dx'd with BC...twice. I try to make excuses for her rather than take it personally but it is a challenge. Yes, this requires change on a massive level.
Spring, Fairy, I'm sending many healing thoughts and prayers that this trying time for your friends will be made a bit easier, amen.
Makingway, I do not understand why people who want to make a statement by killing themselves always want to take innocent people with them. I am a practicing Muslim, I dress accordingly and I know that my visibility would not spare me if a so-called Muslim suicide bomber attacked and I was in the vicinity. They would not care and would rationalize that I somehow deserved it by being there just as Mr. Stack must have done when he targeted that building. My religion has been stigmatized by this type of psychotic behavior and a bloodthirsty killer is a bloodthirsty killer no matter what cause they use to justify it. I'm sure you have good reason to feel sympathy towards Mr. Stack and the situation is tragic but what he did was an act of terrorism, plain and simple. If I had written what you wrote on this forum without a doubt I would be flagged and probably receive a visit from our local authorities. There has been no reference to Mr. Stacks' religion but had he been Muslim the news would be saturated with analysts trying to make a connection between his actions and Islam. I am not afforded the same rights to speak freely in this country as you are due in part to prejudice, ignorance, misinformation and behavior such as Mr. Stacks that was perpetrated by misguided people who happen to be Muslim....maybe. I care deeply for my BC sisters so please know that I am only responding and not trying to antagonize you. I'm just frustrated that there seems to be a different set of rules when someone looses their mind and murders people in this country depending on their race and or religion.

Eff ~ I appreciate your thoughtful post. Thankfully, Mr. Stack did not take more innocent victims with him. I feel sad for his wife and child. I do hope that one day our nation will re-embrace the founding fathers' promise of freedom of religion without persecution.

Have any of you pre-menopausal ladies had disturbances in your cycles? Since my surgery I had been menstruating every 21 days. Last month it seemed normal (26 days). Then this month, 40 days! I am NOT taking tamox, but I have been taking DIM (2 capsules daily for a couple of months now).
On a (possibly) related matter, I had ovarian cysts before my dx. That caused some menstrual irregularity. Do any of you have any experience/knowledge about the effect of ovarian cysts on BC? I am very concerned that maybe I am having cysts again, and did they help to cause my BC in the first place?
I never worried much about hormonal swings....but now I feel terrified of them. Any ideas are appreciated!

Hi, everyone! My needle biopsy came back cancer on Monday. Am getting referred to the BC specialist, but the biopsy guy and my general doc are both talking lumektomy and radiation. I'm a natural kind of gal, too. The surgery I can deal with, but the radition is against what I believe. My prognosis is excellent. The mass is very small - under a 1cm.
Does anyone have any thoughts on just doing the surgery and not radiation?

Suzanne, I had so many ovarian cysts that my stomach was slightly distended. My periods were irregular. Then I got breast cancer. My naturopath put me on iodine for breast cancer and somehow it got rid of the ovarian cysts. My periods now come on time. He said iodine "repairs" the estrogen receptors.
I'm sure others here know more.

Liveforever - so sorry to hear about your dx. It sounds like you have a great attitude -good luck with the decision making.
Suzanne - hmm - I am on DIM and I also have my periods (like clockwork) every 21 days now. Before BC it was (same, clockwork) every 28 days. I too had ovarian cysts that messed up my menstrual cycle -which started the whole BC chain of events. I am not certain how related they are but since then, Ive been very concious of adding iodine to my meals and they didn't reappear. Now I believe its in my multi that I take.

LiveForever...so sorry you are having to join us here, but I found the answers I needed from the wonderful women and and you, too, Timothy on this site. Sometimes, the answer I needed was what question to ask. I cannot advise you on lumpectomy and radiation as I did not choose either of those. But, I have read many many posts from women who do know this issue. I'm sure someone will be able to direct you to the pages that hold those discussions.
LiveForever...make sure you have the OncotypeDX test done on your tumor tissue if it meets their criteria. It is intended for node negative, ER+, Stage I or Stage II invasive breast cancer. Go to genomichealth.com/OncotypeDx for more information. If I had done what my oncologist insisted was what I should do before I begged and begged for the OncotypeDX test to be run on my tissue...I could have gone through needless chemo that would not have benefitted me at all. Luckily, I had been advised by someone to find out about Oncotype.

LiveForever, "welcome" to the forum, but I'm sorry you have to join us here!
You just received the diagnosis a week ago? How are you feeling? My advice would be to first just take some time to breathe, process, get some extra sleep and nourishment, and do kind things for yourself... There is no rush. You can take a few weeks if you need to to think, talk with friends and family, etc., before making any decisions. For starters, you will want to get as much information about the cancer as possible - e.g. type, grade, hormone receptor status, etc. Knowing these things may help guide your decisions. What types of scans have you had so far? (e.g. MRI, mammo, ultrasound, thermogram, etc). Come up with a list of questions to ask the BC specialist, and either take notes, bring a friend or family member to take notes, or audio record the session.
My experience has been that I needed to focus all of my energy on surgery, to get through the surgical phase of treatment, before beginning to think about radiation. I need to take things one step at a time! Now that I've completed the lumpectomy and 2 re-excisions and have clear margins, I've been talking with my surgeon about radiation, and talking with the radiation oncologist, and reading the radiation forum here, and researching radiation online, and watching YouTube videos of what it's like, and reading the recent New York Times article about it, and talking with my naturopath about it, and reading Susun Weed's thoughts about radiation in her Breast Care book, etc., etc., to get as much information about it as possible. I have decided to try radiation, but I'm not sure if I will actually complete it, or decide to stop part-way through... I'm going to try it.

Mathteacher, what kind of iodine do you take? Have you read our iodine forum? One of my doctors did a study with his patients, and I3C shrunk uterine fibroids as well.
LiveForever, everyone has given you some wise advice. You are doing the right thing, just by asking questions. I just blindly followed my doctors and did rads, and I have always regretted it. Read everything you can. It will help you make a more educated decision. The most important thing is to get a great surgeon. You want one who does a lot of breast surgeries, so he can get it all in one surgery. You really want clear margins. If they get clear margins, I would also look into the whole lymph node surgery. I wish I had never let them take any nodes. There was no indication they were cancerous, and they did come out clean, but I think taking them unneccessarily is barbaric. It puts us in so much jeopardy for the future. We need our lymphatic system intact. If they find one node with cancer, they will push chemo, so why do they keep taking out more? I do not get it. Isn't chemo suppose to kill those cells? So glad I never had to make that decision. I would not even let them begin to talk to me about chemo. If you do forego some of these treatments, you must make a religious committment to figuring out why you got cancer, and changing things as many of us have here. I am still working out getting the toxins out of me so that my immune system is not so taxed, and has the ability to knock out cancer cells early. Good luck
And thoughts and prayers to all of my natural breastfriends who are still fighthing, for themselves and for their friends. Life can suck sometimes, but there is always a silver lining to every cloud.

Vivre, how many nodes did your surgeon take? Was it a sentinel node biopsy, or axillary dissection, and what was their reasoning for it? I had two sentinel nodes removed, and was glad to know that the pathologists did not find any evidence of cancer in them. I'm not sure how anyone would have been sure my lymphs were not cancerous if these sentinel nodes had not been removed... is there another way?
Also, I wanted to note that even the bestest of the best surgeons sometimes can't get all of the cancer out during the first lumpectomy and it's not their fault. Surgeons are guided by imagery and the wires, but once they've cut into you they are really just estimating how much to take out...cancer cells aren't detectable to the naked eye and there's no way to be really sure until the tissue's analyzed in the pathology lab. I had to go for two re-excisions, and a friend of mine said she wanted to punch my surgeon in the nose, and that made me super protective of my awesome surgeon! She's the director of the breast cancer program, trained at MD Anderson, highly skilled, etc... it's just that cancer is sneaky and nasty and knows how to hide! There turned out to be 1.2 cm MORE DCIS in my breast than had showed up on the ultrasound, mammo, and MRI, which was a surprise to all of us, so unclear margins had nothing to do with my surgeon's experience or abilities.
But it is true that different surgeons have different "styles," for lack of a better word... I get the sense that my surgeon's default method is to get smaller margins to preserve as much of the breast as possible for a good 'cosmetic effect' (as they say in the BC world), whereas other surgeons may have the opposite "style" - taking out a lot more tissue the first time, thus risking taking out more than is necessary and risking a 'poor cosmetic effect' in an attempt to prevent the need for a re-excision. Some women are happy to have smaller margins in exchange for breast preservation... I'm the opposite; I asked my surgeon to please take out a larger amount of tissue and not worry about what my breast would look like, because I'd rather have a dented breast than small margins. (Amazingly, my breast still looks awesome after 3 surgeries... my surgeon told me she sprinkled magic dust into me during the last one! )
Wow, sorry for the tangent!
