I find it interesting that she had low Vitamin D and was probably low for years according to the article. When will primary care physicians start doing routine screening for Vitamin D? What is it going to take?
0 -
I agree with you , notself, about the screening for Vitamin D. I had to ask for the test several months ago from my primary care doctor (before BC diagnosis). My BC oncologist didn't seem to be that interested in nutrition, so I asked for a nutritionist for a consult. The nutritionist agreed that Vitamin D was important, but thought maybe I was overdoing my dosage (4000 IU day). My last Vitamin D level was 36, but no one seems to care except me about the importance of raising my level . I've read so many articles about the benefit of Vitamin D, but the doctors seem passive about it.

Hey girls! I'm shopping for fish oil and B complex. I'm not happy with what I had been taking. I would love your input!

Seaotter, My pcp told me to make sure I got Omega 3 and not a combination of 3,6 & 9 because there is to much 6 in everything we eat and it's not good for us. The ones I'm using right now are wild Alaskan salmon I purchased at Sam's. They're really big capsules so if you have a hard time swallowing, they won't work.
Best to you!

Hi Natural Girls!
I emailed this to Deanna and she asked me to post this. I know the topic of eating dairy vs. not eating dairy has become a "hot" one with a lot of emotion on both sides, and I tend to avoid all controversy. I, for one, did not believe the anti dairy folks because the studies commonly cited by them were more intuitive than scientific. That was fine for me because I love my cheeses and didn't want to give them up. But the recent discussions on this thread, led me to do my own research and I'm afraid, I am a convert to the as little dairy as possible group. I am putting a link to a talk given by a visiting scientist at Harvard about the hormones in dairy. She examined the estrogen content of whole, skim organic, etc. US milk and found that it was significant, with skim milk having the lowest amount of estrogen. She further gave the high estrogen US milk to kids in Mongolia for a few weeks, and their estrogen levels went up. I won't go into the details here, but I am giving you the link and you can decide for yourself what you think. http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2006/12.07/11-dairy.html
Hugs to all.

Thanks, ladies, for all of the important info. I am reading with interest about the dairy debate, as a long time "health nut" eating little to no dairy. Do any of you have any such input on goat's milk products? Thanks to you all for your input to this thread...and for your open and candid discussion about such important topics.

Patty,
There is only one fish oil product that I can swallow. It is called "Fisol" and it is made by "Nature's Way." The fish oil in it comes from Sardines, Anchovies and Mackerels, in that order. I get it at a local Natural Foods Store but it is also available on line. I found the other fish oil pills that I bought were simply to large for me to swallow.

I eat goat cheese and it doesn't have the same affect on me that cow's milk has. I wonder if anyone knows anything about goats.

sea otter- Please look at chia seeds as a source for Omega 3's. This newfound trend of fish oil is depleting our marine life's source of food. It also kills many other species as 'by-catch' i.e., other fish, mammals get cuaght in the nets and die. Flax seen is another source for Omega 3's but, the jury is still out on if it's safe or not. And yes, don't bother with a complex with 6 and 9-we get too much already.0

Patty...I, too, have used Fisol and they are easy to swallow. Lately, I have been taking Mercola's Antarctic Krill Oil. I have also used Life Extension's Fish Oil.
I am also very interested in what others have to say on this subject of which brand is best!

Hey Everybody...I posted this over on the Exchange City thread but wanted my friends here to know as well since I am so excited to be FINISHED (hopefully)...well except for 3 D Tattoos once I'm sure all this is fully healed.
Today, I had my 8th breast surgery in 17 months...whew...I sure hope I am finished.
My PS DID think that a lift was a good idea for symetry so that my bra will stop pulling up more on the one side causing constant soreness and pulling down more on my shoulder on that side.
Hopefully, this is the end of surgeries until these implants wear out.
Final Report: 11 surgeries in 18 months ...8 Breast...Davinci Robot Hysty/Ooph...2 tooth extractions
Just in case anyone else suffers with repeated infections from no apparent cause----I am not normally prone to infections...So---- After finally culturing a breast infection and learning that it was a common mouth bacteria, I had a continually bothersome root canal tooth extracted and had no further infections. The back crowned tooth next to that was slightly uncomfortable and sensitive for several months so I had it extracted two weeks ago. The root canal tooth had been crowned for about a year and then a cronic problem for 3 years after the root canal and anpicoectomy....then I was diagnosed with BC. So, I figured that having been willing to lop off a perfectly good breast prophylactically...trying to avoid another 3 yr battle with a tooth by extracting it paled in comparison to removing a breast. I will say, however, that my experience has been that when you lop off a perfectly good breast...it won't be happy about it!!! The prophylactic side got me back big time with infections and a surgery to "release" it down to allow more fills only to be accidentally punctured during a fill by the PA.
If only this can really be IT.

Hi,
Suzanne: I had been drinking a great yogurt drink of goat's milk yogurt and probioitic mix that my naturopath gave me. I loved the drink and in the middle of my 30 day juice fast (back in March) I looked forward to drinking it cold every day. I have eczema and always suspected that I might be lactose-intolerant, so was glad to hear my naturopath tell me that goat's milk does not have lactose.
Nowadays, I'm trying an "alkaline" approach, and drinking a lot of alkaline water and no dairy. I have to admit, I'm not yet feeling as fantastic as I should be, but I cheat a little because it really is difficult to stick with mostly fresh/raw veggies and go to work, too.
Anyway, I was told goat's milk doesn't have lactose (although it is still "dairy") and I think it's delicious!
Luna: I had never had root canals before until 3 1/2 years ago, in which time I had 4 before dx with bilateral bc. (I think I've since had 2 more!). Did you know there's a weird connection between root canal and bc? Google root canal and breast cancer. Also, it's amazing that my root canal doctor gets paid just about as much as my breast surgeon got paid for the bmx. That's an interesting fact that's absolutely unbelievable to me! There's something wrong with our system???Good luck with the teeth!

Seaotter......I have purchased the wrong fish oil supplements for about a year....Before I purchase again, I will do my homework....So far, I am looking at a website for "international Fish Oil Standards", where they test and rate fish oils....www.ifosprogram.com.....there is a lot of info on this site and I really would like to find the best, safest, purest form of fish oil before buying again..If yougo on this site you will see a tab at top for "Consumer Report", has a list of approved rated products and if you click on them, it even shows the batch number...Luna metioned "Life Extension", it is listed....There is also a "News" tab which has up to date info on fish oil...I have not done my research yet, so I need to read this site before I can recommend any oil, but looks like a great place to learn what we need to know before wasting more money on the wrong oil..
There are so many things we should consider, my last purchase was for Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, from Whole Foods, thought this would do it, but these pills are huge and do not have a good ratio of EPA/DHA (too Low) nor do not have the IFOS rating on them...So the search is on again...

Luna - I'm soooo happy for you! Now you can get on with enjoying your life!
Thanks girls for the advice about fish oil. somanywomen - I will check out that website, thanks!
Any thoughts about a good B complex?????

Thank you Suzanne and Patty and Mandy !!! Assuming this heals without infection which it should since my 1st exchange surgery in Feb and my re-do exchange in March both healed beautifully except for the ongoing symetry problems. As for symetry now ... this should do it but if it doesn't, I will just live with whatever it is. Then I am hoping I can go to "Facecrafter" for 3 D tattoos but I haven't set anything up yet.
Sue...YES...I have read about root canals and YES my root canal tooth was tooth #30 which I read is on the same meridian on the same side as my BC. That is why I suspected the tooth even though the dentist and endodontist insisted that the tooth was getting better and I should continue to try to save it. The x-ray showed one of its roots to be completely healed and the other had a remaining shadow that they thought might still be healing. The oral surgeon said that the shadow had been there long enough to mean something was going on there. When the tooth was extracted there was infection under BOTH roots...even the one that looked perfect. And after it was removed...I had no more infections in my surgery sites...so then we were able to replace the tissue expander and begin again. So, when tooth #31 behind it kept feeling like something was going on and had a very slight shadow...I suggested we cut off the crown to get a better look and nothing else was found...even ordered and paid for a new totally ceramic crown ....Then went to endodontist who recommended a root canal but thought we might find a crack when he went in to do the root canal as had been the case on the 1st root canal. I had already decided NO MORE ROOT CANALS for me since there is no way to know if bacteria continues to hide out in the tooth since the tooth is dead and there is no way to "feel" infection from the dead tooth unless it comes out into the gum. All 3 dental docs think root canals are fine and get them themselves. My husband just had two and one is still giving him fits. But, I have chosen to believe that it is possible for bacteria to set up shop in root canal teeth once the filler shrinks or if there are crevices within the squiggly canals of the tooth...and that that bacteria can come out occasionally and wreak havok in other places. I also wonder if that bacteria that I have decided is there can cause a steady stream of inflamation. Since our heart health is dependent on reducing inflamation in the body, I'm choosing to believe without any proof that I may be helping my total health by not having any root canals.
So, yes I know that the "out there" folks on google who say we should never have root canals are disregarded by the dental profession as quacks. But, I have decided that if I was reckless enough to prophylactically cut off one perfectly good breast and ovaries and uterus then I am certainly crazy and reckless enough to yank out a couple of back teeth. I have no other root canals and only one remaining crown which is on the breast meridian on the other side so if it goes bad it will be extracted also. You better believe that I am totally focused on my dental hygiene to prevent any future problems.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHETHER I AM BETTER OFF LEAVING THE SPACE WHERE THE TWO TEETH WERE VACANT OR SHOULD I HAVE THE TITANIUM POST WITH A SOLID CERAMIC TOOTH TOP ????? I've been told that "the body loves titanium" and I know they use it all the time for surgeries. Infact, I think I have titanium surgical clips from the mastectomies...it mentioned something about surgical clips on my chest ct scan. IS IT BETTER TO HAVE THE TEETH FOR THE UPPER TEETH TO REST ON...OR IS IT BETTER TO AVOID METALS OF ANY KIND ???
PLEASE...EXPERTS...WEIGH... IN.
I am not suggesting that any of you follow what I did. I researched it and made a non-mainstream medical choice as I have on some other things as well. There are problems when you remove teeth. A couple of teeth can affect your whole mouth.
Interesting aside....Yesterday when answering the Anesthesiologist's questions before surgery I told him about the teeth because of the patch over the one that he would see when he put the tube down my throat....anyway he said "Its good you got your root canal tooth out". That's the first medical professional who has thought that except my PS who became a believer.....so maybe the tide is changing.
Thank you.

This may be off the wall, but I suggest that you swish Manuka honey around in your mouth every day for a month before getting any posts implanted in you jaw. Manuka honey is an antiinflammatory and anti-bacterial honey that is used in many areas to heal gingivitis. Here is a link from PubMed.

Thanks notself. I will read it. I think I have some notes from Asshercut about manuka honey too. I will find those too. I copy all these great articles into my google mail filecabinet e-mail.
That is something I would recommend to others. If you set up a "yournamemail@gmail.com" or "yournamemedicalnotes@gmail.com" it makes for a handy file cabinet...easy to sort and find and all that.

I am not any kind of an expert, Luna, but I do know from experience that a top tooth will eventually drop down if there is no tooth under it for support, which can cause problems. For that reason, my dentist installed a permanent bridge, which involved making "pegs" out the the two teeth adjacent to the space and creating a crown that covered all 3. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, but if the body loves titanium....? Might be a saner solution than what I did...0

Before all the "pink washing" starts next month...here's my personal challenge:
National Cancer Institute research shows that as much as 50% of cancer risk may be related to diet. So....let's encourage all the organizations that are funding research to pledge 50% of their research dollars to breast cancer and nutrition research. And...those institutions and organizations make a pledge that they will not allow their research to be influenced, guided, directed or in any respect tainted by the food and beverage industries. (And, indirectly the pharmaceutical companies.)
For example, the "Susan G. Komen For the Cure" accepting millions of $$$$$$ from Kentucky Fried Chicken because they served fried chicken in pink buckets:
http://bcaction.org/index.php?page=newsletter-110e
p.s. I worked with a molecular biologist from China and she shared with me that her PhD dissertation showed that a fried chicken leg has more carcinogens than a pack of cigarettes. She went totally vegan when she was experiencing "female problems" here in the States and her mother (back in China) told her to stop eating our food. That was 17 years ago.
I've been able to find studies (not just on the web of course) that support my hypothesis and even off handedly asked some epidemiologists and MDs what they thought about diet and breast cancer. Yep! Those countries consuming the most dairy have the highest rates.
Anyway, sorry if I sound a tad negative. Just heard of another young woman (late 30's) losing her breasts and all this "sea of pink always makes me nausea."

I'm with you SuperMom. The problem with research and 'natural' is $$$$. Big pharma are the ones who fund the research. There is hope however. They are doing a study at Hope with white button mushrooms on women who have done an AI for 5 years. (note to all: I eat them EVERY day). Also another study is ongoing on grape seed extract and women who have been on AIs for 5 yrs. I WANTED to do both studies as the wildcard because I really believe these foods/supplements we take can do the SAME things these horrible drugs do.
Sorry for the rant but I refuse to shrivel up and die slowly, not have sex again and get osteoporosis (runs in my family). Just my take.
0 -
Great idea supermom, any ideas on how to start?
Mandy

Suzanne...The problem with a bridge for me is that the space is in the back so there would only be one tooth to attach it too...also the tooth that would become the peg is a "virgin" tooth...the dentist has warned that it could be jeopardized if it is drilled down to hold a bridge....that it could follow suit with the two missing teeth if it is made into a crowned tooth so that it can hold the bridge. So it will probably be two implants or nothing or maybe they make a tiny mouthguard type spacer that I could wear during the day for support and then wear my night guard at night to hold it up...who knows?
0 -
Luna- I am in almost the identicle situation. I had a root canal in the lower molar (second from back). Before I got the crown on, it cracked and had to be extracted. Loved paying for a $1900 root canal for nothing! I got as far as the implant being placed. Then was diagnosed with BC. I was advised by my dentist that if I wanted an implant, I should place the post fairly soon after extraction so the new bone could mold around it and get strong. They said the crown could wait, but put the post in. I have been without that tooth for about 10 months. I don't think my teeth have shifted. However, as that one is missing, I do hit the others quite hard at times. I will finish the process, if for no other reason than to protect my other teeth. I think you mentioned wanting a porcelain crown, being concerned about metal. If I am not mistaken, the porcelain is applied over a metal crown. Might want to ask what kind of metal if it concerns you.0
-
WOW! I had no idea how many corporate sponsors of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure were food and beverage manufacturers. I so wish they would steer 50% of the research $$$$ to support breast cancer prevention and nutrition research but how can they when the very industries they are "investigating" give them so much money. UGH!
http://ww5.komen.org/CorporatePartners.aspx
BTW... I too had a root canal many years ago! I believe it is all related. We are eating Frankenfood that has no nutritional value while we have decaying and rotting teeth that are feeding infections and inflammation. The truth is: Americans have never been fatter or sicker and we can't seem to figure out why.
Common sense is not so common. - Voltaire
p.s. Thanks for all the support (on and off line). I think breastcancer.org would be the perfect place to start our 50% research towards nutrition and breast cancer prevention.

I am planning my first Think Beyond the Pink event in the Chicago area in October. I have a wonderful nutritionist and author from Westin Price who will speak as well as fantastic doctor I recently met who has written a great book about hormones. It would be great if any of you wanted to come and hang out with each other. The seminar is free, but people must register through my website. Also check out the great new ThinkBeyondThePink tshirts we designed. And I have some great articles in the dental health forum that talks about the links with cancer and root canals. When I met Dr. Huggins, author of Uninformed Consent at the Health Freedom expo, he specifically said DO NOT do any implants. They still leave an area where bacteria can collect. My holistic dentist told me not to do more work on my teeth for 6 months after I had my root canal, to allow time to kill all the bacteria. I am hoping my antioxidants and gargling with salt water and iodine will work. I will go back in Oct. and start removing some of the amalgams. I had a root canal when I was in my twenties. Looking back, afterwards, I remember having a horrible flu like infection that lasted for weeks. I am sure all the bacteria was released. I also had teeth work done before and in between my pregnancies. No wonder my sons were born jaundiced. And I have had ear aches, congestion and post nasal drip for years. It has diminished some since I had the root canal, but my dentist said it sometimes takes months after to heal. Plus, I still have 8amalgams. This is my last hurdle. I am doing it as I can afford it. Dr. Huggins has studied over 5000 breast cancer patients and they all have the same bacteria from their teeth. The maddening thing is that Westin Price studied this decades ago. He proved the links and was hailed a hero. What happened? Breast cancer was rare back then. We need to sue the ADA for allowing this travestly!
