D3...I still have to take 20,000 per day to stay over 60.

For those who have talked to Dr. Flechas....
I was very disappointed in our "conversation."
If he didn't recommend ATP cofactors or an increase or decrease in my 50 mg of iodoral...does that mean what I am doing is fine?
I guess I just expected him to talk and he really didn't.
How soon should I re-do the urine test?

MTG, MBJ & Luna ~ Regarding high doses of D3... I recently heard a discussion about D3 on XM Doctor Radio, and one of those docs made the point that we cannot absorb more than 2500 IU's of D3 at a time. So if you're taking a higher dose than that, you need to divide it into 2500 IU servings. That sounded like a very plausible explanation why some women can take 5000+ IUs and never get a good bump in their blood reading.
I've also read that our eyes are one of the key ways we absorb D naturally, from sunshine. So if you are trying to get D from the sun, you need not only to ditch the sunscreen, but also the sunglasses -- at least for some of the time you're outdoors. Deanna

Oh, and here's a new website I wanted to pass along. It's such important info, I didn't want to simply tag it onto my above post:

Dlb: I just opened your link, joined, and there was some good info there and recipes. It did seem as if the articles and focus were on men's cancers, i.e. ;pancreatic cancer. The article on dairy doesn't mention that men mostly benenfit until you get to the end. Still, it does have some good stuff on there.
I just read a great article in More magazine which can also be found on line called: How Safe is Your Milk. Quite eye opening as to how much estrogen is in milk.

I just bought some unsweetened organic coconut milk and I LOVE it. It is not too thick and is great in a fruit smoothie. As good as coconut is on the skin, the milk is great nutitionally. Don't know if you have discussed this before but wanted to mention how much I like it.

Luna- I also had a less than inspiring conversation with Dr. Flechas. He was perfectly polite and informative, I just felt he was sort of walking through the conversation. I guess this is understandable for a free phone consultation. Do you really take 20,000 of vitamin D daily? That sounds like a lot. Like Deanna suggested, maybe you can't absorb so high a dose at once? Maybe in smaller doses throughout the day? Are you having bloodwork done regularly if you are taking that much? Not just your D levels, but your liver too?
Deanna- Thanks for the very interesting link. How cool is that? A whole movement, including chefs to promote anticancer eating! I love the idea of throwing a dinner party for friends with anticancer recipes. Wish I could invite all of you!

Barbara, is the unsweetened coconut milk you mentioned found in the refrigerated foods section? I don't think I've seen it. I recently started using So Delicious French Vanilla Coconut Milk Creamer, which Patty/Seaotter (who I'm missing here!) had recommended. I love the vanilla flavor, but it's very sweet. Maybe cutting it with the product you mentioned would work.
Speaking of coffee, does anyone use a coffee substitute they would recommend? I think I want to get away from decaf coffee, but can't decide what to try. I drink white, rooibos and other teas, but I still look forward to a cup or two of coffee first thing in the a.m.
I'd love to come to your dinner party, DesignerMom! How's the cosmetics line coming along? Over the weekend, I was complaining to DH about how dry my skin is, especially a sizeable patch on my forehead. He asked me what I'm using, and when I explained about my new fascination for coconut oil, he observed with humor that there's absolutely nothing soft about either the inside or outside of a coconut, and that he thinks the idea of using it for a facial moisturizer is ridiculous. I do like the way it works on my legs & feet, but must admit that yesterday I went and ordered my old moisturizer again because the coconut really isn't working out long-term for the super (post-HRT) dryness & wrinkles. Yes, the coconut milk is in the refrigerated section and unsweetened is delicious.

I have been researching this and I wanted to share a very interesting link. My friend in the UK has had great success with this and is also going the alternative route after her BC diagnosis adn MX:

Deanna-Do you know if after i cut my 5000 vit D in half do i take it the same day and maybe half in the morning and half at night?

I dont post here often but read this thread daily and I just wanted to commend you "girls" as you have a very good thing going. I have learned a great deal just "hanging out". Thanks!

Debbie, I'm no expert, but that sounds logical to me. And, impositive, the input you've added has been very helpful to me. Root canals and coffee you-know-whats come to mind. In fact, I'm seeing my dentist tomorrow, and have been mulling over what I'm sure will be a continuing disagreement. He'd recommended a root canal a few months ago. I've procrastinated, and in the mean time, seem have made some improvement (to an obvious infection) with various natural protocols, and, most recently, plain old hydrogen peroxide. So we'll see what he has to say tomorrow. I just don't understand why the infection can't be treated without a root canal. Deanna

Deanna- We'll all just have to have a virtual anticancer recipe dinner party! I love the idea of turning my "non cancer" friends on to healthy, Mario Butalli food! Thanks for asking about the bath and bodycare products. They are on the verge of ready to launch. I am just finalizing some label tweeks. My thoughts on coconut oil. I do love it for my body though I find it a bit messy. Keep in mind that the oil, cream or whatever is not really what moisturizes. It just seals the moisture into your skin. You may need to do a bit of exfoliating if your face is dry in order to get better results. I'm not a big believer of heavy-duty exfoliating, too irritating. I use a terrycloth washcloth, run it under hot water, wring it real well then wipe off my cleansing milk. That is usually all the exfoliating I need. Then a spritz with rose water and I'm ready for my moisturizer. Deanna, maybe try this remedy. When I ski or am wind chapped it works miracles. After thoroughly cleansing, pour some jojoba oil into your palm, add about 5 drops of essential rose oil (a bit pricey, but lasts forever). Coat your face. Then take your warm, moist washcloth and put it over your face for a few minutes to soak in and breathe. You will immediately see the difference. By the way, jojoba is thought to be the closest thing to human sebum. It is actually a wax, that is why it doesn't clog the pores.

Althea-have you been listening to the Great Debate? I am finding it very interesting, but certainly a time consumer. I am looking forward to Sally Fallon, president of Weston Price. She co authored a book from a friend of mine called Performance Without Pain (Kathryne Pirtle). Kathy was a vega but always felt horrible. Eventually she crashed. Her book is who she was able to regain her health by eating whole foods.
On supplements-It is important to not take them all at once. Your body absorbs only so much at a time.
Deanna-Please go see a biological dentist and get another opinion before you do anything. Or better yet, go to Sanoviv. It is not that far from you.

Deanna,
Thanks for posting the "eat to defeat" website info. It seems very interesting and the recipes look terrific too!
About your root canal....about 10 years ago I had a dentist sugest a root canal...he claimed it was an emergency. I, who get second opinions for everythin, got a second opinion. The second dentist did not see any reason for the root canal....and I did not have it. (I also did not go back to Dr Root Canal). So you may have already gotten second opinions, but I'd surely o aain and see what the second or third dentist says.

vivre, yes, I have listened to the first two days of the great health debate. I'm looking forward to hearing Sally Fallon's portion. I'm wondering if I'm going to have any new opinions at the end. I've made a lot of changes in how I eat over the years. I remember when this section of the forum first came available, I had a simple goal. ...or I thought it was simple anyway. I wanted to figure out which way of eating was the best and follow that plan. Six years later, I'm still wondering about a lot of things! lol Meat, no meat, soy, no soy, gluten, no gluten, eggs, no eggs. There's lots of very smart people with widely differing opinions. Fortunately, I've arrived at the place where they all seem to agree -- ditch the processed foods.
I have some good news today! I found a tuition buddy to join me in the training at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition! We'll both get a discount on tuition and classes start early next month. I'm a little nervous about taking the plunge. I realize the credential of 'certified health coach' is lightweight, but it's a credential nonetheless. I'm especially interested in their mentoring that comes with the program and I crave finding a community of likeminded people, like we have here at natural girls. I might be covering my tuition payments with bake sales, but I'll take the leap of faith that it'll all work out somehow.

Unbelievable. I know this is off-topic, but i just lost my job today. Only 2 people in teh entire organization were let go, and one of them was me. I made my numbers by 105% this year! I am certain my BC diagnosis had something to do with it...

Wow, Marianne, that's awful. You realize it's against the law to let someone go due to illness, right? At least it is here and I think that falls under federal laws nationwide. I would take a deep breath and then start doing some research because that's just wrong.

There is a bit of info here on BCO and I copied and pasted this:

Thanks for posting that, MBJ. I have a good friend who is an employment attorney, and she is helping me out with the right questions to ask, and has referred me to an attorney who is licensed in my state who can help me. I am still in shock! Reeling. Thank you for responding to my post.

(((Marianna))) What a shock! I can only imagine how you must feel. I had the same thought that MBJ and obviously you had about the blatant illegality of having your health be related to their decision in any way. That's just so wrong! What did they tell you? Oh, I feel so bad for you. Let us know if we can do anything to help you. I don't know where you live, but maybe someone here has a contact that can help you find another job. Deanna

They told me that my position was being eliminated due to restructuring, but they couldn't give me any identification of other team members that were affected. We have over 100 people in our marketing organization (large software company), and I was told that it was affecting 9% of us. Well, after the day was done, I've only found one other person who was laid off. They said it was not performance related, but was simply a restructuring... but I've been around the block a few times, I know that they could have found me a position if they had wanted to! Other members of the team were tapped to go to different parts of the organization. My boss is really upset about it, and I know he tried to stop the wheels in motion. So, if anyone knows of companies in tech (hardware, software or services) that are hiring, please PM me! I am a working mother of 3 small kids, and we need my income!
Like I needed this stress on top of it all. But I will say this: having basically fought against cancer last year to regain my life and sanity, this is truly *nothing* in comparison..... but still don't like having to be displaced out of a great company and good career path.

P.S. and thank you all for your responses. It's comforting to just hear from you all!

Marianna, I know what you're going through. 10 years ago our corporation came in out of the blue and laid off all us nurse practitioners. Restructuring, they said. Medicare billing, they said. None of that was true. The only thing that mattered was it is a hire-and-fire-at-will state. They could do anything they damn well pleased.
It was demoralizing. But I am in a better space since then, looking back now...Hang in there. Don't let toxic feelings for the bosses get the best of your health.

Thanks Deanna. I knew about splitting D and other supplemens up to improve absorption; I take mine with lunch and then a fatty snack like almonds. Didn't know about absorption thru the eyes ; cool !
Re: Taking Vitamin D, there are also 2 additional points. (Since they're from my notes to myself, I didn't copy a reference)
Like so many other fat soluble vitamins, D works best when taken with fatty foods since the fat helps the body to absorb these vitamins.
Also, keep in mind that Caffeine often hinders absorption of vitamins. Avoid taking vitamins with tea, coffee, or caffeinated sodas. Wait at least an hour after finishing one of these drinks for best results

Thank you Deanna and DesignerMom...I will try splitting my D3 throughout the day. Yes I do have regular bloodwork...both D3 and Lipid levels and metabolic panel.
Someone on one of these threads said some believe iodoral shouldn't be taken with Vit C.
Any advice on what other supplements should not be taken together? I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering this.

Hi MBJ, Yeah, I heard the same thing about staying away from super high volumes of anti-oxidants during treatment, but then I read differing opinions. One of the latest is that there are other factors that might explain why the herbs are bad other than chemo like if you smoke they can work against you. I just waited till a month after I was done with all my treatments, including radation - to be safe. When I'd asked my radiation oncologist if it was okay to do mega doses of antioxidants during treatment he said 'I don't know. I am ignorant"

That's a bummer, Marianna, but sounds like you've got a great attitude, and yes, it's all relative as far as what is really bad. But it would burn me. Do you think it's because of the cancer?
I had the same thing happen to me long before cancer. But it was because two catty women in my very small department became good friends and started giving me a real hard time and the boss didn't do well with conflict. She told me the job was being restructured. Was very obvious this was not the case if you looked at all the blatant siding that had gone on. Not to mention, the one only other person who's in the department told me later that no,the job did not change. Hey, speaking of attitude, did you guys see this one?
There was a woman who woke up one day....
She looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only 3 hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today. So she did, and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only 2 hairs on her head. "Hmmmm," she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today." So she did, and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only 1 hair on her head. "Well," she said, "today I'm going to wear my hair in a ponytail." So she did, and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head anymore. "YAY!" she exclaimed. "I don't have to fix my hair today!"
Attitude is everything. Try to find your silver lining...0 -
Hi Natural Girls,
Do any of you have an oncologist who does integrative cancer care or GP certified in holistic medicine who may be interested in guest blogging for me once or twice a month? I'm launching a new page to my site that will focus on holistic cancer care and so far have a nurse who's an herbologist with a western bent, a restorative yoga instructor and herbologist with eastern background, and a licensed practical counselor who works with cancer survivors. Would you mind passing along my request to anyone you can recommend in good faith? Thanks much. My website is www.1UpOnCancer.com. The Holistic page is forthcoming but you can see what I'm doing so far. Am getting a great response from people like us who are hungry to know what they can do to take care of themselves. Well, gnite Natural Girls. Rachel
