I will be 12 weeks pfc this Tuesday. I colored and did highlites yesterday at organic salon. I feel back human.
I am glad I did cold caps.
Best of luck to you all.
Hugs,
V.❤😍

When did you start using the cold caps?

hi viktoryak,
I will be 12 weeks PFC this week but thought hairlights were a no go until 6 months after? Can't wait to feel human again as my hair is thin and has blond ends and dark roots!

I guess I didn't read a protocol well. But I believe it is more like 3 month. But out of all highlites better then color because when you do highlights you don't touch roots

I am starting chemo tomorrow and am cold capping with penguin cold caps. Do I put a "buffer" on my hair between me and the cap?
I am doing taxoter and xeloda....anyone doing the same? Success? Penguin only sent me four caps to rotate... Is that enough??
No one in my center had ever done this before and all are skeptical

Does anyone know what is protocol for hot saunas after cold capping? It is bad weather today and my friends inviting us to Korean Spa. Where a lot of hot saunas. I know my Dr.ok with it from medical view but I don't want my hair to Come out from overheating. Anyone done it 12 weeks pfc?

Teacher, penguin sent me 8 caps to rotate every 1/2 hour and it takes at least 1/2 hour to refreeze. The first 2 are every 20 minutes. I would check with them, doesn't seem like enough. No buffer between cap and hair unless bald spots. You can color after 3 month

is it because my chemo is only taxotere intravenously for an hour and a half....xeloda is a pill...
Shit I start tomorrow, she said number 1 would refreeze by the time of the switch...they also said we need 40lbs of dry ice...that doesn't seem to match up with all the post either. HELP..am I misinformed??

My A/C was only 1 1/2 hours also. you have to use caps an hour before and 4 hours after. It takes a full 2 hours to refreeze. When you use #5, it would only have had at most 1 hour 40 minutes to refreeze. I think you pay the same for 4 or 8 caps. I would call and insist they send 4 more immediately.

Jiffrig...I am trying not to panic. I start tomorrow and she assured me four was enough with rotation. I was planning on upping the ice anyway...maybe should I put the rotated one in a separate cooler for faster freeze? SHIT!!!

40# is enough for 4 caps, the 75-80 is for 8 caps. There is no rotated "one", you rotate all, 1 becomes 5, etc. You may be fine if you have an efficient capper. Good luck

Jane 75: Thanks for that. I am close to 6 weeks out now, surgery is on Tuesday. I went in and had my stylist trim off a bunch of the stragglers. He used an electric razor with no pressure. He found out very quickly that you can't pull on it at all. So, I have kind of a pixie but boy is it thin. You can see through to my scalp in places.
I hope surgery doesn't completely total the back. :-( But it is only about 1" to 3" in places...longer on the top. I was told you can lightly trim, so that is what I did.
I can't wait for hair to start coming back in. I get so worried it never will. I think as soon as it does, that see through scalp look will go away and it will be tolerable. I didn't mind going short...it feels great and looks better than having the wispy stuff all over.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Meg2016: That had to be horrible! I did end up cutting my hair, only about 2-3 inches because I got a bob before I started capping. I am hoping I won't wake up to a nightmare after surgery (just a lot of hair gone) and I am going to ask them to be as careful as they can. Makes you wonder what the heck is going on during surgery.
Have you started growing anything in yet?

Susan BP my hair was at its worst 4.5 weeks PFC ( small surgery + viral). I cut it then and the growth is coming in all over I am now 8.5 weeks PFC . This inspite of wearing a wig after the short cut ( too short for me and thin). I agree short is better than the very thin wispy hair. I do think the growth is and will be faster if you have done Cold capping.
Good luck for the surgery.

PositiveP: thanks for the words of encouragement. Even though I am going through this now, I am so grateful that I had almost all of my hair for 5 months!
I am working on adjusting to what is happening but I think that new should start growing soon!! I am going to get a couple of hsts

I am so bummed. I am set to start chemo at Mayo in Jacksonville tomorrow. The cold caps were sent to the nurse who was to prepare them and show me how to use them tomorrow. Due to Hurricane Matthew, she was unable to find dry ice to cool them down. So.....this isn't happening for me

Connie, could you postpone your chemo for a few days? Others have done that when they had a problem getting ready with cold caps in time for their first scheduled chemo

SusanBP- I do think I am seeing some regrowth. I really want to cut all my longer hair down to the shorter length, but I am afraid my whole head will revolt with a large shed. I have an unfortunate comb-over effect at the moment and I know shorter hair will be where I end up anyway. My eyebrows seem to have come back just over the weekend (still short, but went from 5:00 shadow look to now filled in.) So hopeful my hair is doing the same. Its amazing how much just the eyebrows make looking at myself more like "me". I do think I can see less visible scalp through my hair! My husband says he thinks it is filling in, and he can see the top where my little bald spots were, so he probably has a better idea, whereas I like to pretend they aren't there.

PatinMN, by the time I knew she couldn't get the dry ice, we were in Jacksonville at the Mayo Courtyard as I had a 7AM appt. I didn't even attempt to reschedule. I just wanted to get the show on the road and get it over with. There's enough of a mess in this area and so many without power that I figured it might be hard to get for the next several days. I'd purchased a wig prior to deciding on the cold caps because one of my daughter in laws is a nurse and insisted that I needed to get that done and behind me. Good luck to all of you...wish I could have tried this but I'll deal with it

Connie1230 Well, one reassurance I have for you is that you would have been very likely to lose a lot of hair on AC. Some have had success with capping, I would call my results mixed. I do have hair, but at this point I am about to cut what I have left to very short because it is in such bad shape and the rest of it is so short. So while I avoided having a wig or being completely bald, it was a lot of effort and expense with the end result still looking pretty much like I went through chemo. I am overall glad I did it, but I wonder if I had known ahead of time what the end result would be if I truly would have done it all over again. For those just doing Taxol or Taxotere or other drugs, I think chances of success are much higher. For AC, its just not as clear how often it works. Good luck with chemo! Here's hoping you sail right through it!

I agree with Meg, I wish PCC had been more upfront about the chemos that just do not work, A/C being the worst of them all. I have maybe 25% of my hair left after A/C and cold capping. You may just have saved a ton of money, Connie

Those who are on AC, don't be too discouraged. It does work for some. Here is my pre-post
Second pic is 24 weeks PFC.
OK, so I had a lot of hair before all of this. And I lost about 2/3, but evenly. And it has grown back fairly quickly - see baby hairs sticking up on my head and baby bangs - now about 2 inches long. And I haven't coloured it dark again, this is my natural, which looks less full. And I think the first pic was right after going to "Look Good Feel Better" hence the bright shiny extra makeup face…think I'll go put some more on!

Zinny, it may not be how you are used to seeing yourself, but i actually like your current hairstyle more on you! Snappy and confident. You have a great face, and the cut shows it off.
You are lucky you thinned evenly...i have thinned up top primarily and it is a bit alarming until i photoshop my scalp out with Toppix.
You are looking so well! I bet no one would guess you've had chemo

Zinny - you look great. I'm 14 weeks PFC and my hair is very thin and very short after a haircut. Still shedding a lot when I blow dry it on cold setting, washing in the kitchen sink and cold water. Despite taking vitamins for hair regrowth and biotinI see almost no re-growth and I had Taxotere, Carboplatin, Herceptin and Perjeta treatment for 6 rounds. I hope my hair starts growing soon.

Hi all, just found out yesterday I start AC/T Oct. 21st, and I will be using Paxman cold caps. I know it's really tough on hair, but going to give it a try. I do have a wig picked out though. I'm 49, with an 8 year old who doesn't want me to loose my hair. I've made light of it with her incase I go bald, and now she wants to go to the wig shop with me. Really not sure what shampoo to use, there are several suggestions here?
Zinny-wow your hair looks good, definitely encouraging!

I just wanted to show everyone cold caps success in the news- featuring me!

tshire- That is exciting! What a great story...and you looked absolutely beautiful on your wedding day! Congratulations

DistrictGirl -- I had herceptin and perjeta alone before surgery and before "real" chemo, and I did not cold cap. I had no troubles. A lot of people and doctors say to cold cap with perjeta, but I think there just isn't a lot of data.

Zinnyyou look so pretty! I'm totally jealous of your thick eyebrows! Mine have always been thinand now they are starting to fall out (again!). Hopefully since there's no chemo to interfere with regrowth this time, they will come in faster.
