Tx Fortunate1. I find by night-time I feel tight and sore.
Scared after all you've been through? No pepperoni remember? Just subtle and finally over!
I don't know about the nipple reconstruction but definitaley will consider the 3D tattoos. Good luck and goodnight.

Hello ladies!
Carole, even I am late,HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
upcreek, I like sauna so much, and I miss it a lot now.
Quick update on my PT treatment. I started PT couple weeks ago because I had pain in my shoulder. Not always, only when I tried to reach behind. I thought my joint was inflamed, but PT said it was definitely a muscle. I was surprised that muscle could be so stiff and tight. I had only four sessions so far, and I exercise two-three times/day at home. I feel much, much better now. Not only pain in shoulder subsided, I also feel my pec is getting better. My PT said she doesn't see many Mx's patient's in their office, and she believes it is not right, we all need PT after the surgery and then to continue to stretch muscles as much as we can.
Meg, I strongly recommend you to ask for PT referral tomorrow!
Small trick... I've bought Muscle&Joint Gel to apply to my shoulder, then decided to apply it to my pecs and breasts. Guess what, I like how it works.
I have to go, be well everyone!

Thanks for all the birthday greetings.
Maybe we should change the name of this thread and get some big-time attention: HAVE THE ONE-STEP RECON AND LOSE WEIGHT!!!! I'd better get on the ball because I'm lagging behind in the weight loss category. Fortunate, I didn't know you'd lost 10 lbs! I need to shed 8 lbs if I want to wear my golf shorts in comfort rather than in sausage style. Today I had to turn on the A/C in the car. It's in the 70's and humid.
My youngest sister Michelle and I took care of a rather grim assignment today. We went to the funeral home and made pre-arrangements and pre-payment for my mother's funeral, which everyone, including my mother, hopes is quite a few years away. When my father died, all the arrangements had to be made at that time, and it was very difficult.
Crisis in the kitchen last night. The sink faucet sprang a leak. So we can't use that faucet until it's repaired. It's like camping. We have to bring water from another faucet. So cooking will be at a minimum. Fortunately, we have a pot of home-made multi-bean soup in the refrigerator to warm up for tonight. And the dishwasher works. DH had a golf trip to the MS coast today so he'll deal with the repair tomorrow. It's lucky I won't be around because the air will turn blue with his language. It takes language to get pesky repairs done.
Shoshi, hope you're on the mend.

Hi all,
I made the call. Tattoo appointment on April 15. Subtle, subtle, no pepperoni. I understand that I won't really know how it looks until it heals.
Carole, I found a bunch of khakis in the back of my closet that were very unflattering but too good to throw away. They fit nicely now.... shopping in my own closet! I have to keep my work pants up with a belt. This is unfamiliar territory for me, I like it.
Meg, how was the appointment? Shoshi, how are you doing? Okiegal, Are the pins and needles staying away?

Hello Everyone,
I had my last BS appointment. No referrals. Tightness in my chest muscle is from reconstruction and takes time. I should try different exercises to work the muscles in my arm and the tremble will go away. That's it.
IamOK, If I don't feel better I will take your suggestion and see a PT.
Upcreek, I am still sore many times at the end of a busy day. Not pain... just not comfortable. My "new normal"...I don't expect it to go away. Muscles on top of implants are not normal for muscles!
Carole, If my sink was out of order we would eat out or have take out!
It was warm and sunny today, in the 60's. We are expecting rain for the next 4 days.

Doctors have known about the use of paravertebral nerve blocks for a long time....so I am wondering how a paravertebral block differs from the procedure mentioned by our Canadian sister, Souad? Did some of us, all of us, none of us receive this paravertebral nerve block prior to mastectomy?

Preincisional Paravertebral Block Reduces the Prevalence of Chronic Pain After Breast Surgery

Received 16 July 2008; revised 9 December 2008; accepted 2 January 2009. Available online 10 February 2009.
Summary
Background
Successful acute pain management after breast surgery remains challenging, and if not achieved, may increase the likelihood of subsequent chronic pain.
Aims
This article aimed to evaluate the evidence for varied techniques described for peri-operative pain management in breast surgery, and to review the literature on chronic pain after breast surgery and particularly ‘post-mastectomy pain syndrome'.
Method
A Pubmed search was performed, with the key words "mastectomy" and "pain" for articles in the English language in the adult human population (age > 19 years), looking specifically for different analgesic techniques that have been evaluated.
Results
Thirty-three peer-reviewed publications with pain outcome data were included, ranging from 15 to 289 patients per study (total n = 2104). Twenty three were randomised controlled trials and the rest were prospective or retrospective audits and case series. Inconsistent trial methodology precluded a meta-analysis. Paravertebral local anaesthetic nerve blockade resulted in lower pain scores and fewer side effects than opioid-based regimens. Three risk factors emerged predicting chronic pain post-mastectomy: higher post-operative pain scores, age <65 years and inclusion of major reconstructive surgery.
Conclusion
Paravertebral block should be considered for use in major breast surgery. Pain control should be optimised/a priority for both acute care and to potentially reduce chronic pain.

I forgot about the nerve block but I now remember my doctor prescribed it for me. I think I took it for approx 4 days after surgery. My home care nurse was really happy it was prescribed because she said most doctors don't prescribe it when it should be.

Hello everyone,
All's quiet...this must be a good thing! I made a call today to a well known dermatologist. I'm hoping she might be able to refer a nipple tattoo artist. When I called her office receptionist said she would have one of the nurses call back...that's hopeful!
I hope everyone is doing well! It's cloudy and cold. Rain expected tonight and the next few days. Off to take my walk. Have a good night!

Fortunate, I can't quite imagine you in khaki! Good, you have the tattoo apptment.
Meg, I hope you find a good tattoo artist. I think you'll be happy with nice tattoos.
The kitchen faucet is in operation again. Dh repaired it while I was gone today. My mother had a dr.'s apptment in addition to her hair apptment. The dr. was a kidney specialist she sees twice a year. All her bloodwork results were very good. In fact, her sugar level is better than mine, and I don't eat Little Debbies! She's doing well for an 87-yr-old.
Ally, I'm so glad you liked my football romance. The 2nd book is my final one. I proposed a very different story with golf in it, and the editors didn't go for it. So I modified the story, wrote it, and quit. Poor Dh had to keep working a few years longer.
I'm coming along on learning how to play bridge. DH and I may take a series of lessons together from a man at our club who is a golfer. He will teach 4 lessons free and after that you have to pay. Meanwhile I'm continuing to read Brdige for Dummies and take the online course.
Today I left my purse in the shopping cart in the Winn-Dixie Supermarket parking lot. Hurried back when I realized I was "purse-less." A man had taken it inside and left his name and phone no. I was so relieved. I called him and thanked him, remarking, "I'm glad there are still honest people." He answered, "There are probably more than you think." That's my feel-good story for today.
High in the 70's here today. A bit muggy. Oak trees are starting to explode with buds. Bradford Pears blooming. Double up on the allergy meds!
Hi to everyone else not mentioned by name.

Hello everyone, I'm having a semi productive day. I should be working so much harder. Tattoos are heavily on my mind, but the appointment is a while a way. I have plenty of time to think.Carole, I have to get out of dirty jeans now and then. Usually it is to wear clean jeans or a skirt. The khakis are boring but they'll dress me up just a little bit. Symphony tomorrow night and Opera Saturday night. Gonna be going through the closet again, dress-up is fun.Cool and breezy here, with a bright blue sky. Picked oranges for breakfast. Lots of peach blossoms and the grass is crazy green.Back to work!0
-
Hi everyone!
Very busy with the chairs (they are slowly coming along) and normal pursuits. Jealous for fresh oranges at breakfast!
0 -
Good morning everyone, another beautiful day with more rain arriving tomorrow. My lawn will stay green for a while longer. Okiegal, sometimes it seems that I could just invite you over for breakfast, you're just down the street after all. Have a good day with the chairs, looking forward to seeing the results if you can show us.
Shoshi, no nerve block here. Very interesting article. You sound as though you're doing better, hope that's true.
Carole, I tried bridge decades ago but didn't like it that much. Millions love it, a nice way to get together with people, maybe I should have taken lessons. Nah, I'll still pass on that one. I bet you'll get really good at it.
Off to work, have a great day everyone.

Hello Everyone,
I did not get a referral I could use from the dermatologist. The search continues.
Okiegal, I would like to see a picture of the chairs also.
Fortunate1, Sounds like you're going to have another fun weekend! Enjoy...
Carole, I'm glad your plumbing is working again and you got your pocketbook back. I left my bag once and found it was where I left it! Lucky me! I don't know anything about bridge...I might check it out.
Shoshi, I hope your feeling better.
NewBride, Think of you and hoping you are OK.
I hope everyone else had a good day. Wishing all a good weekend!

Hi, Everyone.
I've been missing you. So busy preparing for chemo. I do try to keep up with you via e-mail notifications.
Here's the latest. As of today my insurance has closed their investigation of my cancer as a pre-existing condition. YAY! I will be $2K out of pocket for my MX but my chemo will be covered 100% by my insurance. That's good 'cause it will run in the neighborhood of $100K when all is said and done. Special thanks to Bigapple for keeping me sane. You were absolutely right in all that you said about insurance providers.
Now for more good news. My OC says that he is OK with my doing the Penguin Cold Caps in order to try and save my hair from falling out due to chemo. I told him that if they work for me I will be approaching him to provide support for the Rapunzel Project by placing a sub-zero freezer in his infusion center for other patients who might choose cold cap therapy. He said, "OK."
Even more good news. I think I may have "dropped and fluffed". I am 7 weeks post-op and suddenly my foob feels very much like my boob. Soft and mobile instead of hard and stationary. PS is very happy with his work and it looks like all I will need is a very small implant on the boob side to achieve symmetry. Of course I won't be doing that until after chemo. In the meantime I have an A/B cup size booster that matches me up when I wear a bra.
The nipple continues to improve. I don't think it will ever regain the projection that it had originally and PS doesn't seem to want to cut the "good" one down so I may just be uneven. At age 50 I may be too old to rock that "high beams" look anyway. Oh well. I do find it ironic that I never felt the need to wear a bra on a regular basis until after losing a breast. I seem to recall a discussion here about Alloderm for nipple reconstruction. I wonder if it could be used for a nipple implant to achieve symmetry there?
And now, even more good news. I worked my first show since my MX. No problems whatsoever! Granted it wasn't an arena show with 20 semi trucks full of stuff but it was a real rock show and it kept me busy until about 3am before the tour buses finally rolled away to the next city. By the way, Experience Hendrix is an amazing tribute concert if you are a fan of rock guitar. It features Joe Satriani, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Johnny Lang and a list of other "axe slingers" that goes on and on. Needless to say, REALLY LOUD. Really entertaining too.
Now how about all of you?
Fortunate1, I'm so pleased that you've made your appt. for a tattoo. As I've found more and more local BC survivors it seems that most of them are like you and I in that they are trying to match a remaining "good" breast. They report that their experience with the tattoo was good. Perhaps because the artist has a living model right there to work from. Between your artistic eyes and the artistic eyes of your tattoo artist I feel you will end up with a result that you will be happy with.
Meg, Have you spoken with Dr. Israeli's office about tattoos? I know he's kind of out of your way but it would only be for a couple of appts. and an outpatient procedure. From all accounts I've heard, he is THE GUY for the job. It would just be so nice for you to have a positive outcome after what you went though with your ex-PS. And you certainly won't have any trouble getting references from him. I'm so proud of you that you have kept up with your walking. It's so good for you. I intend to try to keep up my daily 2 miles even through chemo to the best of my ability. It's good to keep strong and it even helps to fight the depression that I have become prone to since my DX. Thanks for your ongoing prayers for me. I know that I wouldn't get through all of this nearly as well without them. I will continue to pray for you too. Soon we will all be feeling better, I know.
okiegal, I'm so glad that you have normal things to report. That tells me that your prickles aren't bothering you now. That's fantastic. I may find myself on Neurotonin as one of the side effects of Taxotere can be neuropathy. It's good to know that there is something out there that can help without causing problems of its own. I also can't wait to see the chairs. And I think you should check out brendaallison.com. She may be very interested in your work too.
Carole, Jeez. I'd better not ever retire. It sounds like a full time job plus overtime. I don't know how you do it. I do think that I would like to learn to play bridge, though. Are you learning alot from the online lessons? I think I'd like to try that. I know how you must have felt making pre-arrangements for your mom. The days I was composing my "last wishes" letters were some of the worst days I have ever had. But now that I've done it I don't have to worry about it any more and it is good to know that nobody will ever have to wonder what they are supposed to do or who gets what.
Shoshi, What's the latest with the pain doc? Are you doing OK? I worry about you all the time. It sucks that your pain makes you regret your surgery. Try to remember that you did do the right thing. As persistent as you are, I know you will find a way to get past your pain. And you won't have to face chemo that may or may not keep you from dying of breast cancer. We're in this for the long haul and your odds are better because of your surgery. I'll keep praying for you.
Hi to upcreek, ally, i-am-OK, Mantra, Bigapple and others that I'm sure I will realize that I've forgotten to mention as soon as I go back a page or two.
Well that's it for now. I'll try to check in more often because I really do get to missing all of you. I hope you are all having a good day. TTYL.

Hi to all. Has anyone had "cording" problems? I have one axilla cord on the sentinel node side.
Thanks for the info re the Penguin Cold Caps. I had not heard of this before and plan to pass the information on.
Tx for all your updates. Another beautiful 60 degree sunny day here today.

Hi all,
NewBride, things are sounding good for you...dropping and fluffing, insurance problems GONE, work(!) and a "thumbs up" from your dr. on the "cold caps". Your friend Brenda Allison looks to be a very busy and talented artist. Thanks for the link! You are in my thoughts and prayers. I look forward to reports during your treatments.
Fortunate1, is your nipple tattoo this week? Meg9, if I was as close to Dr. Israeli as you, I'd make an appointment. Sounds like he has quite the following!
Shoshi, I'm sorry you are still struggling with so much pain, but happy to know that you are making some progress with your doctors. I hope that you will be able to overcome it all. At least you got started early.
I did yard work yesterday and except for missing that one hour of sleep...I feel fine. The Neurontin is controlling most of the stinging sensations. I didn't work out at all last week. My sister had the week off and provided plenty of distractions in addition to the work on the chairs. I hope to finish them this week and will post a few pics.
UpCreek, from what I've heard, a PT is needed to help eliminate cording. Is it bad? I know they can be painful.

Good morning all,
Okiegal, alas, the tattoo isn't until April 15, which gives me plenty of time to worry. I joined you in nerve stabs to the breast this weekend, a couple of them startlingly strong. I'm glad I didn't yell during a music performance. Who'd have thought anything like that could still be happening? Mine are very infrequent, and I'm considering them as nerves rejoining and firing off, wheee!
Newbride, what a wonderful post. So much going on. I haven't heard of most of the guitarists, I like Jonny Lang, though. I wish I could talk to you and your unilateral mx friends. This matching thing is kind of weird, isn't it? It's "lightly lined" bras forever for me. At 62 maybe to be expected, anyway.
Meg, is Dr Israeli the one who uses Vinnie for tattoos? Go!
All my friends, Have a beautiful day.

Okiegal: I have been going to PT. I don't think it's a new develoment--I can just see it better now that my ROM is better on the sentinel node side. I think it is a tendon and not a thrombosed lymphatic vessel. It does not go down my arm like some women who have axillary web syndrome. From what I understand it takes massage, stretching and time. It is sore and tender.
Nice to hear that the stinging sensations are better. Looking forward to seeing the chairs.
Hi to all. DH is making homemade ravioli with pesto sauce so I'd better go and help......

I checked out Vinnie Myers work at his website, Vinniemyers.com. From what I understood, he uses regular tattoo inks, not dyes. On a FAQ section, he says the tattoos will only fade slightly. Nice. As one who practices the same art of "trompe l'oeil" (fool the eye), I think he is very talented and has work is excellent. In hindsight, I would have probably been just as happy with high quality tattoos.
We are predicted to have a beautiful spring like day. Hope you all are doing good.

Hello Everyone,
New Bride, I'm happy to hear your OC is OK with the cold caps. Going forward with a caring and supportive doctor is most important.
My breasts changed size, shape and position for months. In the beginning my breasts looked like someone cut a grapefruit in half and stuck them on me...they never moved! It took awhile before they soften and dropped...now they even bounce! I'm glad the nipple is doing well....and your the ins. company problem is straighten out!
I think it's natural for us to feel a little depressed. We have been through a lot. I feel for you that you have to go through chemo. When I was diagnosed I knew there was nothing I could do...it was out of my hands. I just wanted to get through it the best I could for me and my family. You have had such a great attitude. You also have good doctors; you're married to a great guy who will be with you all the way. You have family and friends who care greatly about you and you have us! I keep you in my thought and prayers.
Fortunate1, Vinnie Meyers does not work with Dr. Israeli...Vinnie has his own tattoo shop in Baltimore, MD. When I'm ready I think I will take the trip to MD. At least I know the outcome will be good. I will have to what inks he uses. I do have fair skin that burns easily in the sun. I also have allergies...
Okiegal, I think the permanent makeup tattoos fade and my PS said they need to be redone every 2 years. UGG! I definitely don't want to do this every 2 years nor do I want to look at faded tattoos! Vinnie is the only tattoos artist I know of who does nipple tattoos. Do you have a tattoo artist near you? I look forward to see the chairs.
UpCreek, Your cording sounds like the poking, stuck feeling I have been having for the past 4 months. If I lift my arms straight above my head the left muscle from my shoulder down to the incision on my breast looks pulled...like a cord. My PS said to massage it. My BS said it had to do with the way muscle was cut and attached to the alloderm. He also said to massage it. I asked for a referral to a PT and he said I didn't need one. I have been massaging and there had been no improvement. Do you feel it when you are sleeping? When I turn on my left side I feel the muscle holding the implant from moving. (stuck) I do not feel any of this on my right side.
Shoshi, I hope your feeling better. Could you be allergic to the alloderm?
Ally and BigApple, IamOK, I hope you are well.
We had rain for days. Both of my sisters lost electricity...I was lucky. Today the sun is shinning. Have a good day!

Hi, everyone. I've been too busy to get to the computer for days. Last Friday I subbed in a tennis league match. We played on rubico courts, green gritty surface. When I was backing up for a high-bouncing ball in the backcourt, my feet slid right out from under me and I fell smack on my back. My head snapped back. Thunk!! Much to my embarrassment, women flooded onto the court with ice packs and lots of advice. Don't move! Lie there! My eyes were inspected for possible dilation, etc. etc. Two of the women were nurses. My partner and I ended up defaulting even though we were winning the 3rd and final set. I went home, promising that I'd go to the emergency room if any symptoms of a concussion popped up. None did, and I am fine.
Saturday Dh and I went to the New Orleans Fairgrounds and saw last year's horse of the year race--Rachel Alexandra. Along with 10 other races. Beautiful day and a fun outing. The corned beef sandwiches at the Fairgrounds are outstanding.
Spring seems to have arrived. We've had one sunny day after another. The oak trees are leafing so fast you can watch the unfolding, it seems.
NewBride, I enjoyed your long post. You are so on top of things with your upcoming treatment. Somehow I just know you'll do well. Fortunate, time passes fast. April 15 will get here before you know it. Okiegal, sounds like you're enjoying the work on the chairs. I'm looking forward to seeing them. Meg, I vote for Vinnie! You and your DH could turn it into a nice laid-back vacation. BTW, lying on my left side feels completely different from lying on my right side. The right side position is a little more comfortable.
Upcreek, I don't know anything about cording. But home-made ravioli with pesto sauce. Sounds delicious. Ally and Bigapple and I am Ok, hope you're having lovely weather and everything is going smoothly for you.
Shoshi, hang in there. If you're back at work, things have to be improving.

hello everyone......i had to send my computer back to toshiba...i'm using my son's mac now...i love it. new bride...you sound great, upcreek...is cording what meg describes? at this point i'm feeling ok, just cannot stand the numbness, and tenderness....does that go away at some point...the foobs are painfully numb....i'm sill massaging and doing that pinch, pick up thing the ps told me to do, i do these things along with stretching 2x daily....new bride, i read about the hendrix tour in my son's guitar magazine....i was, and still am a big hendrix fan....sounds like you have a cool job. carole, glad you didn't hurt yourself on the tennis court, sorry you had to default while you were winning. fortunate...okie...meg....you ladies sound well...shoshi..glad work has helped emotionally, hoping your pain improves...i_am_ok, big apple, mantra...hope everything is well with you....today was a beautiful, sunny day...i resumed walking/jogging on my lunch hour...exercise always improves my mood....now if i could only lay off the chocolate...lol...have a great night

Meg9: I may have something similiar, it is just one cord from my axilla to side of breast on the sentinel node side. It is tender but it doesn't make anything feel stuck. My PS wants me to continue to go to PT as they know more techniques for stretching/massage then we can do by ourselves.
Ally: Have missed you. My daughter has a Mac too and loves it. What is the pinch, pick up thing?
Carole: You can't be doing things like that--ouch! I hope you are ok? The ravioli was unbelievable. We had a shrimp/thai dish tonight and are having my family over for St. Patrick's Day tomorrow for our traditional Irish supper. Irish whiskey for sure! I am second generation Irish and 12th generation French-Canadian.
NewBride: Wow, you are so strong and postive. I know you will get through this with flying colours.
I hope you are feeling better Shoshi.
What does eveyone think of meeting someday in the middle? I am game to go anywhere.
Hi to BigApple and I am ok.

Hi All:
Ally and all the Dr. Isreali fans you are all my hero. I met with him today, what a great guy and a great office.
I'll keep the 410 on the left and he will do a stacked DEIP on the left side,I have a scan of my tummy on Tuesday to check out the vascular stuff. They are handling all of the insurance stuff. I cannot get over how great they are.
He made me feel very good about being there, I really am so happy, thank you all so much.

Good evening everyone, What a day, warm and clear, gorgeous.
Carole, you're so athletic, I'm so not. Even with a slip and a thunk you are my hero.
Ally, a Mac here, I love it. I'm not exactly computer savvy and can still muddle my way around pretty well.
Meg, I envy your bounce. I have one that bounces, the other is pretty immobile. I read on my possible tattoo artist's website that she uses two different kinds of inks. I'm going in with a list of questions.
Upcreek, I'll knock on your door for a traditional Irish dinner... yum.
Bigapple, Dr Israeli and his staff sound ideal.
Everyone, Hey,lets meet at Vinnie's for tattoos. Good night all.

Hello Everyone,
Carole, WOW! That sounded like a nasty fall...I'm glad you're OK. I worked in a bank that had a tile floor. Even though they had a rubber mat, when rained or snowed someone went flying...including me. I was so embarrassed, I couldn't stop laughing.
Ally, I still feel numb and sore at times. Yesterday, I felt like I was wearing a tight bra all day and I wasn't wearing one. It is important to keep stretching.
UpCreek, Can you actually see the cord? I hope you feel better...
BigApple, I'm so glad to hear you're pleased with Dr. Israeli...it is so important to feel comfortable with your dr. I have not made an appointment with him yet. I was trying to find someone closer to home. Good to know someone else has the same good opinion of him and his staff. I wish you luck...
Fortunate1, I think the tattoo artists ink is the way to go...no fading. Do you have any allergies? Let's all meet at Vinnies!
I hope everyone else is doing well. It is sunny and warm...reaching 60 today! We'll be having our traditional St. Patrick's Day meal tonight. I don't drink, but my DH is known for the best Irish Coffee.
Off to walk my 3 miles. I've only lost 3lbs in 2 ½ months.

Meg9: What are you cooking for your supper? We our having family over too. My sis and I went to Ireland two years ago and it was like being in a story book. It was a magical trip visiting villages where our ancestors were from and meeting wonderful people.
Yes, I can feel and see the cord when my arm is raised.
