I am very sorry for your trouble. I mentioned you by name today and then said a prayer for you.

With regards to retiring there is a vast difference between your standard of living and your quality of life. If things are not going well with regards to your treatment/cancer progression then retire. I officially retired on 15 March however with annual leave etc I actually left the office over 2 weeks before that. I have to say that within a few days I noticed that I felt a lot less stressed, started to feel better and most certainly know that I made the right decision. OK so you may have to seriously re-look at you financial incomings and outgoings but your health and well being is more important.

I do hope that your present treatment is successful in curtailing your tumours and in the meantime I will continue to say a prayer for you. My best wishes go to you.

"Peace of conscience is the most authentic form of happiness. It helps us to be strong in adversity; it upholds the nobility and freedom of the person, even in the direst situations; it remains our lifeline, that is to say our hope... when despair would have the upper hand... This matchless gift of interior peace is the Risen One's first gift: he immediately instituted ... the sacrament able to bestow this peace, the sacrament of forgiveness, that forgiveness which raises us up (Jn 20,23)." - Paul VI, Pope from 1963-1978, General Audience of 09/04/1975

Thank You God. Thank You God. It may sound strange but ever since BC dx my life seems to have got better and better in so many ways. I  feel grateful, immensely grateful to the Almighty. Although I have always believed and He has been there lovng me always, I myself had never felt such a depth of profound gratitude til that first night, on the day of my dx. I think I felt such gratitude at that moment because I really realised I was not in control, and was very grateful to know that God is there. Right now I feel like my life is on the best track yet…and getting better. I do not believe that God reaches out and smites people with cancer. We are creatures of a loving God. But I do believe that when it strikes us He sends a steady stream of grace and blessings to us.

Penny, I know from your posts that you have a plateful of difficulties to deal with at the moment. I am praying that God will take that stream of grace and turn it into a torrent for you.

What Frank posts above sounds to me like wisdom truly born of experience.

Best wishes to you all. XX

    Hello

Well I am on cycle 2 of the drug trial. I mentioned that I had had a few SEs during cycle one i.e. the dreaded big D as well as a rash. The Onc decided that my body was being put through too much and it was showing up in my blood samples that I was dehydrating so we took a break for a week at the end of the first cycle and restarted back at a lower dose. The SEs are reducing. The rash is almost away and the D is definitely reducing.

I went in for the biopsy and unfortunately my blood pressure dropped and would not come back up so I was kept in the clinic overnight. Fortunately by about midday the next day my BP came back up so I was allowed home. I didn't sleep the night before the biopsy as I was so worried that I would take an urge to go to the toilet in the middle of the biopsy. The research nurse said don't worry they will give you a bed pan, they have seen it all before ! ! which of course was no consolation to me. Thank God I did not need to have to use a bed pan.

I mentioned that I was to be the lay reader on Easter Sunday and I was worried that I might need to go to the toilet during mass but I decided to take the risk and read and again Thank God all went well.

I will have a CT Scan at the end of this cycle which will tell us how the tumours are reacting to the treatment but my Onc is convinced that the tumours are reacting already. So please God that he is correct.

    Take care all.

Penny, I will be praying for you as well. Disability is difficult to accept. We are still working on "accepting" cancer! I am dealing with the same issues. Don't want to give up on my hopes and dreams, I have been thru so much since diagnosis in 2009. I have to believe that God really loves us all!

I will be praying for you all. Please pray for me that God will bring a great guy in to my life. Being single thru all of this has been tough!

I wish the best for you all!>

How is everyone?  I still keep praying for a cure.  I have an appointment today for my second infusion of TDM1.  We have a family vacation planned May 7th Florida (DisneyWorld).

Thank You, Lord, for treatment. Please bless it and use it for Your Truth & Healing in me. In Jesus' Name, I pray. Amen.

Good Morning-friends, have been working on an issue with a member. Wanted to share with you all the note below b/c of it's importance. Hope you find it useful Sassy

(members name deleted) Glad the link helped. If you get the AARP magazine this months issue (probably dated may 2013) , there is a story about the safest hospitals and what safety procedures that are in place that cause them to be safe. The article cites that 180,000 people die a year due to medical/surgical errors AND 400,000 drug errors are made a year. The articles states that these numbers are likely higher b/c these are the ones that are reported. I agree. I know you've seen where I've said on the threads "Sorry etc for too much info, just want too make you(BCO memebers) safer". Guess I should stop apologizing for writing stuff in this regard. These numbers are higher then the last set of numbers that I had known. The problem is either getting worse OR there is better reporting. I'll go with better reporting.

It cited that one of the safety items was having an ICU Intensivist. It cited that only 35% of hospitals had Intensivist. I was dismayed at this percentage since residencies for Critical Care Medicine have been available since the 1980's. Truly thought by now that the "industry" would have been driven by demand for better care that this statistic would be 70 to 80%. ICU medicine is absolutely in need of a specially trained doc. Just as in all subspecialties of the American Medical Association(AMA), the knowledge and skills of this subspecialty are critical to survival when a patient is at this level of need.

I'm going to post this on the threads, I'll take off identifiers. My hope is those seeing this will locate a copy of the AARP article. Read it throroughly. Then question there local hospitals on each item. Based on what they elicit re:safety of each facility, they can choose the safest hospital near them for care. It can mean the difference between life and death, and or avoidable complications. Spreading the word to others regarding this may save lives.

Your description of where your friends daughter is now is typical. So, the care may have been fine or she recovered in spite of them. I'll go with the care b/c of your description of how she appears now. What was truly lacking here was the communication in lay terms to the family of was what was going on with the patient. All the lay person then can do observing is assume, as in this patients case, there appeared to be fractured care delivery and choas. What can the untrained person concluded observing this. As in all care, communication is the center of it all. Very often even the care givers question what the recovery will be. AND then the patient pulls through. Continuing with evaluating the records will lend a lot to the understanding of this event.

She was in S FL and the hospice carers there were wonderful, I only wish she had got hospice care sooner. I hope your Mom is being blessed with loving attendants as well as her loving family. Hello All,

I just had the most wonderful experience tonight.  My parish had a Mass with an Anointing of the Sick and/or Elderly that I attended.  I was a little reluctant to be anointed even though I am a Stage IV cancer patient.  I have been blessed with almost  3 years of good quality of life since my diagnosis, but I decided a extra healing prayer and anointing would be nice.  I was a little embarassed at first because most of the people were elderly, with canes and walkers, while I must have looked perfectly healthy to them. But when I filed up to be anointed with the holy oil on my forehead and hands, it was so profound that I have difficulty explaining the deep sense of peace that came over me.  My favorite hymn was being sung, "You are Mine".  Thank you, Lord for this extraordinary experience!

DC197, I received the annointing twice...once right after my dx and again from our Bishop at a healing mass for cancer patients. It gives a great sense of peace and a reminder that God is with us through our journey.

    Mary, prayers for your Mom.

    Healing prayers to everyone here.

Our local cancer support centre came to our church the other night and did a presentation about their services. One of the services they offer is yoga which has tremendous relaxation effects. I was very surprised when one of our parishioners came up to us afterwards and told us that yoga was anti-Christian and we really shouldn't be promoting this organization. Really? So we're supposed to discount all the great work that they do because they offer yoga classes? I have partaken in the odd yoga class over the years...I guess I'd better get to confession fast!!

My daughter has her confirmation next week. We have a new auxilliary bishop being ordained on Tuesday and he's coming to our church on Thursday to do the confirmation. I warned her that he'll either be really hard on them or really easy on them. We'll see.

    God bless you all.

I go to a Catholic Bible Study once/month.  We pray the rosary together and read scripture, among other things.   One of our members had an aunt who just passed away.  As the family was going through her things, they found nine first-class relics from various saints.  They were just tucked away in a box in a closet.  He brought them to the bible study.  Every one held a relic and stood around me, praying over me, asking the saints whose relics we held for intercession.  It was great!

Michelle - I, too, have been told that yoga goes against Catholic/Christian teaching, but I agree - the local support group probably doesn't even know that, and I'm sure they help in many other ways!

Cancer support groups provide yoga classes here in Ireland too - I agree that they certainly mean no harm - and I do think there is sometimes an overreaction to these things by some well meaning folk - it's exercise and meditation right? (I'm not expert on yoga here, can you tell? Only seen it in movies and have friend who goes to classes  - so very 2nd hand info) As far as I understand many of the desert fathers and hermits did something similar in their quest to come closer to our Creator.

Michelle I'm so impressed you still get bishops for confirmation. We have a shortage of clerics here so the PP does the confirmations, been that way for quite a few years. Which is actually lovely, and means being confirmed by someone you know, and confirmed is confirmed no matter what rank of priest does the rite. But I'm impressed you must have a healthy enough number of priests and bishops where you live!

Here is what I read on www.catholic.com regarding yoga.  I'm only relaying info.  I am in no way judging anyone.  Just thought you all may find it interesting.

Question - "Is it okay for Catholics to use yoga as part of an exercise program? What about in physical education for children?"

Answer - "Two factors are relevant here: First, it depends on whether the yoga is being presented in a manner that is free of religious elements, i.e., purely as a system of physical exercise. If it is coupled with elements of Hindu spirituality (e.g., talk about moving kundalini, or energy, around your body), it is not appropriate for Catholics to use it as part of their exercise routine.

Children are not mature in their thinking, and while an adult who is firm in his faith might be able to go to an "iffy" yoga exercise class without danger of being attracted to Hindu spirituality, a child well might not. If a child is being put in danger of being attracted to Hindu spirituality--either now or in the future--by the program, then it is not appropriate."

    Blessings, all.

I have never done yoga and did not realize the Catholic Church had a problem with it. Def thanks Penny. I exercise as often as I can but I dont take it that seriously...ie., Hindu. Congrats to your daughter Michelle. I remember my own confirmation - we did have the bishop - it was in Baton Rouge, La and my youngest son's in Collierville, Tn. I even remember my retreat when we picked our saint's name...my is Teresa. Louisiana is mostly Catholic unlike Tennessee so the ceremonies we had - long time ago - are different. Am praying for your Mom Mary. Our family was blessed because neither of my parents were in hospice before they died and in fact my father was scheduled for hospice the day he died. Diane

Just my nickel in here. Most Yoga classes are different than practicing Yoga---Yoga classes just have stretching and meditation and a little more but when u meditte it is strictly a calming device--they don't advocate Hindu meditation, just realaxing technigues (sp) candles, flowers what ever is fresh and calming to u, if u live near water then on the beach. But that's not practicing Yogs that is merely doing excercizing and taking care of our bodies. If u practice Yoga then it has more of the religious tone to it--u bring Hindu into the practice so it might be consider (well I guess it is) non-Catholic--it's a matter of how u say it. LOL
