Haven't been here in ages.  Which means I haven't been doing any formal exercise, but I do get my walks in when I can at lunch.  Got back about a week ago from DS wedding in San Diego - what a beautiful place - I noticed that there are not very many heavy people around, as everyone seems to be walking, jogging, biking, and surfing.  A community that is focused on health, including many restaurants we went to.  We went for several long walks on the beach which was just delightful.  Oh, and those sunsets!  The wedding itself was wonderful, and even better was the family time spent leading up to it - we rented a house and everyone stayed there, and it is great to see my adult kids growing up and getting along.  It only took 25 years LOL.

I had a training appt. scheduled for this evening after work, but my trainer just texted me to reschedule.  I do have my gym bag in the car, so I will go anyway, I certainly need to get back into my routine.

My surgeons at Hopkins followed me for a full 5 years, so I spent a lot of time in the waiting area at the Breast Center.  I could always tell the newly-dx patients - they just had that shell-shocked look, and were usually with family, busily reading all the handouts and other info.  Depending on their body language, I'd usually try to take a seat next to them, and give them a sympathetic greeting, like "Newly diagnosed?  I remember that as being the worst time."  That way I'd ID myself as a survivor and invite them to talk.  Most of the time they did - pouring their hearts out, and so grateful to be able to ask questions from someone who had been there. I think I helped a lot of them, not so much by what I said, but by my very existence - looking healthy and normal.

Yesterday I ran the Ovarian Cancer 5K Run/Walk.  I noticed one woman running - she had the teal survivor shirt on and looked to be about my age.  I eventually passed her and went on my way.  At the finish line, I was drinking my water and eating my banana when I saw her cross the finish line.  She walked a little past the finish line and was standing next to me when she suddenly burst into tears. I understood immediately the flood of emotions she was having.   I said to her, "Congratulations - you did it. What an accomplishment."  Then somehow we were just hugging each other, both crying.  I said to her that I was a b/c survivor, and I so got how she was feeling.  By that time her family found her and she went over to hug them, but it was a moment of connection that only a cancer survivor could understand.

I had some survivors reach out to me when I was in active treatment and it meant the world. I never wore a wig, preferring baseball caps.  My favorite was a Nationals cap with a pink ribbon on it.  People can't help but notice a bald woman, and the pink ribbon just helped explain it silently. One day I was in Macy's and a woman came up to me and asked if I was doing chemo for breast cancer.  I said yes, and she enveloped me in this big hug, saying she was a 6 year survivor and she just wanted to wish me well and tell me I could do it.  This woman was of a completely different ethnicity and race than I, but we had a bond that went beyond those superficial things people use to divide themselves.  I had been feeling particularly low that day, but that woman's hug and encouraging words kept me going for days after that. If I have an opportunity to pay that woman's kindness forward in a non-intrusive way, I'll always try to do that.

Odie - the plane pull sounds like so much fun.  You had a beautiful day for it.  Ruth - love the picture - it's pretty much how I remember you during most of our trips!  WinkingPat - the family trip sounds wonderful.

Lots of chores over the weekend including mowing, plus final sanding and painting of the pool coping.  Ran the 5K Sunday, and did a yoga DVD this morning.

Cheryl's on a plane flying high over you all on her way home.  Had a great visit and she wore me out!!!

Here she is at one of my favorite places, Grounds for Sculpture.  So Sunday we got in lots of walking, well over 10,000 steps. Just went out for breakfast and then lounged around today before she had to leave for the airport.

    Great fun,  Thanks Cheryl.

Very cool picture, patoo! Glad (and not surprised) that you guys had fun!

Oh yeah, that's me.....camera phone and a mug of coffee! ThumbsUp

Geez, I just had an interesting after-effect from our California trip. The website I booked our Alcatraz & bus tickets through sent me an email on Friday that they had been hacked & to watch out for fraudulent charges on your credit card. This morning, MasterCard called and wondered if I had just tried to book a $1,600 ticket to INDIA! Needless to say, the card is now deactivated.....I'm glad they are on the ball! Did Yoga this morning & Zumba tonight.

Mary, your story brought tears to my eyes. That is exactly how we can make something positive come out of this whole thing.

Mary, love that you were able to pay it forward. Very touching and so important to those newly diagnosed as well as us as we ourselves heal.

Ruth, love the new avatar. Glad your credit card company is on the ball.

Lilacblue, hope you had a good run.

Exercise for me today was a 3 mile run/walk in the beautiful fall weather today plus weights.

Claire, well done on 5 years!Smile Mary, terrific post. Did your time of the 5k improve via interval training? FYI, British women have the worst chance of surviving ovarian cancer in Europe. Just 31% of the women survive for five years which was worse than poor nations like Bulgaria and Lithuania. Kindergarten, new grandbaby soon - lucky you grandma.  Patoo, super photo of Cheryl.  Pat, I wondered where - good to see you post.  Odie, you are consistent.

Off to body balance and yoga with son tonight.

Oh wow, Cheryl got to visit Patoo? How fun! I've been AWOL lately. Having a hard time withdrawing from the tramadol I was taking for frozen shoulder. Even with a slow taper, I've been sick for a week every time I drop the dose. Three more weeks to freedom. The stuff really helped when it helped, but this is the worst med discontinuation I've ever experienced. Without that, all my usual joint pains are ramped up. Between all that and two bad colds in one season, I lost my commitment to daily exercise. I hope things will look differently once I'm off this stuff and get the background joint pain managed with tylenol. On the plus side, my shoulder is finally freeing up.

The most I have been able to do since enduring this crud is take short walks (even if its to the stores down the street for milk or a treat from Dunkin' Donuts) and working in my yard. Most of the excersize I get during the summer is hanging out my laundry, working in the veggie garden or weeding my flowerbeds.

Mommyof2, exercise is exercise.  Walking to the store, gardening, housework is all getting you moving so keep up the good work!  You will find you can do a little more and a little more and a little more over time so hang in there.  (and the 'Voices' will also push you a bit).

    Thanks gals,

I have even been helping this past summer with an Adopt-A-Spot that my neighborhood association took on. It was lots of work but it has been fun. I didn't think that it would amount to much but it has helped me lose almost 12 lbs.

Last winter hubby had to shoulder the burden of all the shovelling and snow removal but this year I'm ready for action!!!! Bring on Winter!

Nooooooooooooooo, don't want to go through another winter like last.  Must admit that as much as I complain shovelling is not as bad as I make it out to be!  Just that I have to do it.  Now if I had a choice... we won't go there.

Just did 45 mins on treadmill; 4 of them running.  Tired but feeling good.

    Night my sculpted friends.

Day 2 of the Couch to 5k program. Felt great. Wearing two sports bras and I don't bounce much but I'm still scared to overdo it. I walk for a half hour after the program and tonight I just couldn't stand it and ran again all the way home. The mystery weight loss is solved. Must have been because I lost all my muscle. Since I've been exercising more I have gained two lbs.

Wow that's a big sculpture or somebody shrank Cheryl.

Ann, glad to hear your shoulder is improving and I know you look forward to being drug free.

Beth I always felt apprehensive jostling around so much even though the doctor said it would do no harm.  I think a good sports bra is essential.  I didn't think about wearing two!  Good idea.

Mommy sometimes its slow-going but just do as much as you can and one day you'll be able to do more.

Nat those are great stories of how we can reach out to each other.  I did have a lady reach out to me in a hotel bathroom one day.  She saw my short hair and said she was a two time breast cancer survivor and I thought, oh wow so am I.  It was definitely good to hear it was 6 years since her last "trip".

I didn't  get any meaningful exercise in yesterday.  Just went to the grocery store.  This evening walked 42 minutes.  I've been sneaking in some squats a couple of times a day.  I found it warms me up in my cold office!

Today is the actual 5 years day. Celebrated by doing an open water swim in Lake Chelan prior to returning to Seattle. The ladies I was with did the hot tub, and were shocked that I would do this twice. But really, not nearly as bracing as the Cowlitz River.

I had plans for a run, but will do a walk as tired from the trip back plus the swim. Got it in just before the rain arrived. Here is a picture from last night's sunset swim. One of life's truly magical moments. Plus my guy will be impressed. I am learning that hot, younger guy drowns out the Voices. That is, unless both of us are having an IPA at a microbrewery.

Lake Chelan also has x-country skiing so may play a winter trip there too. Would be beyond stunning to ski there in January.

Plus, who knew? Wonderful fruit growing area and a new AVA (unique climate) with very special wines.

Lots to celebrate, and think you will agree that not your ordinary swim. - Claire

Today I went to my livestrong class at the YMCA. We did stretches, light weight lifting and strengthening. This is our 5th week doing class. It will be a total of 12 but I've missed some classes and will miss two weeks in October when I go see my parents. Still better something than nothing. After the class ends I'm not sure what'll do for exercise. I've learned some techniques in class and perhaps I can do them at home but it's always been hard to get motivated alone, I do better in groups. We'll see.

Congrats on the five years Claire! The swim looks fabulous.

It appears that I overdid the leg exercises on Sunday as I am really sore and stiff. Tried to push thru yesterday with a slow run and  arm exercises with weights. Went to bootcamp tonight where we were doing barbell exercises. Sick... Now my arms and legs are sore.. ....LOL. Took an Epsom salt soak tonight and will take tomorrow as a rest day.

    Have a good night everyone.

I had a busy day subbing in a challenging special needs classroom (I am tired!), did a quick pilates DVD, & went to a volleyball game (which we won in 3 games....which I am very happy about mostly because that meant I could go home & sit on the couch!).

    Congratulations again, Claire!

Aurora, we are your group now! Happy

    I'm back......

Had a fabulous time in the Hamptons walked every day on stunningly beautiful beaches and went to a absolutely beautiful wedding where I danced so much I ended up with blisters on my feet and then on Sunday drove to New Jersey and had a wonderful visit with Patoo, she took me to the sculpture garden which was an absolute treat a real "must see" if you ever visit the area.

Congratulations on your 5 years Claire.  Auroaya see if your gym has a Silver Sneakers program maybe you could do that after your program finishes.  Ann I'm sorry you're going through so much but good to hear your shoulder is resolving. Odie did you feel like you were on the Biggest Loser while you were doing the plane pull?

So now back to the grind and tonight went to Sh'bam.

I even  dance in the kitchen to music while doing dishes   lol

This weekend if I have a chance after getting the remaining housework done, I might jump on the Gazelle Edge and try to work out for 15-20 minutes.

Today at lunch I am going to try a free yoga class being offered at work.  I have never done yoga before, so we will see how it goes.  The instructor described it as strenuous!  I hope that some women my age are there.

Had my yearly squish and squeeze yesterday (all good), then met a friend who was having her last rads treatment at the same hospital - we celebrated with a coffee and cookie!

Pat - hope you enjoy your yoga class!!!  I love my yoga, but have learned (the hard way) not to try to do poses if they become uncomfortable.  There's no competition in yoga - and just ignore that lithe 25 year old next to you who is casually twisting herself into a pretzel!  Be aware of your body, and think of the class as "inviting" your body to do certain poses, instead of you mandating your body to get into the pose, no matter what.  If your body needs to turn down a particular "invitation", so be it.  Your instructor should be encouraging, and should be able to offer variations on the poses so that every student benefits, no matter what level that particular student is at.

Also, you may want to download the handout from Step Up Speak Out on b/c related LE to give your instructor: http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Trainer%20doc%20for...

This handout is excellent for alerting the instructor that you may need alternate poses now and then, especially if she has you doing poses like downward dog that put a lot of stress on the arms and shoulders.  Even if you don't have LE, it's an excellent resource for any b/c survivor to share with a fitness instructor.

Have fun - I love my yoga and can't do without it!  Especially now that I'm doing this running clinic, I've increased my yoga sessions to help ease the joints and muscles.

Speaking of which, after our strenuous track running session last night, I did a nice relaxing yoga DVD this morning!

WWW walked in the parks this morning & then stopped by my old school to recruit. The long time secretary (a lovely lady) is retiring at the end of the month (ie next Tuesday), so we dropped by with a little gift & an invitation to join us. I go back at 3:00 because they are having a retirement tea for her after school today. We got a text from our Zumba teacher who is cancelling class because she is home sick/sick/sick (wash your hands lots, things are already going around), so I did a 30 toning DVD at home.  Here's WWW recruiting at the office:

I had the funniest thing happen to me today. Sent my surgeon a note of thanks for 5 years, and a brief update of all that I am doing.

THEN, I learned that I had inspired her to get moving and that she is training for a half marathon! She is also considering getting a bicycle.

Otherwise, a day half down time and catch up/half work. Will do a run later. - Claire

Claire that's great! I also sent my surgeon an email yesterday asking if working up to a 5k by the time I see her (two mos) would be ok. Her secretary wrote back : This is the surgeon's response "You go girl!!!"

Did day two of couch to 5 k yesterday and walked five miles today. Might do gym later, we'll see.

I love the stories of reaching out to support others. I have found myself on both the giving and receiving ends of it. I truly believe we are often put in the right place at the right time.

Great pictures of get togethers; I hope to meet up with some of you at some point. Looks like a lot of fun!

I have been running every other day and walking on my "off" days. I am up to running 4.5 miles and I actually like it. So hard to believe!

A measly 15 minute walk today after a long dentist office visit.
