Hi all. ruthbru my PCP appt yesterday was not as positive as yours. Blindsided with Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis! Expected it to be a little bad, borderline at worst. Oh well, just another chapter. This will certainly keep me moving but have to rev it up because need to drop weight and arimidex is not likely to cooperate. Diet has not been too bad but will have to change as well - low carbs; more proteins, no added/refined sugar. So starting a med, Metformin, tomorrow and awaiting her referral for counselling with Diabetes Support specialist. There is lots to learn.

45 mins on treadmill tonight with a couple short running spurts. Gym tomorrow and will run in pool. I like your idea about writing down at the beginning of the week the exercise routine.

    Night my sculpted friends.

Patoo- the same thing happened to me last year, and I too was totally shocked by that news. I got really serious about what I was eating and that is when I totally gave up sugar, and went on a diabetic diet. My PCP put me on a low dose of metformin (which I remain on), but I have turned it all around and now have my AIC in the normal range. So trust me, you can turn this around. I also met with a nutritional counselor when that all happened, and think you will find it very helpful. I met with her twice and she said I was doing everything I needed to with my change in diet, and to just keep it up and that was that.

I have read that a lot of women end up with a diabetes diagnosis after BC treatment, although they are not sure why? Several theories including that many women may be headed that way anyways (my AIC levels were in the pre- range the year before) and that chemo and/or the AIs can change your blood chemistry and throw you into it. My PCP thinks it is the later, but my MO never said anything either way. I told my PCP that I did not need anymore wake up calls. So it resulted in me changing my diet and once that change had become habit, I got to the personal training to loose weight.

And yes, it is hard to loose weight on the AIs, so you just have to keep at it. You can do it, you go girl!

Had a massage yesterday (I was given a gift certificate last year for Christmas), rowed 5K this morning. Beat my best time by 5 seconds so that's progress. Trying it again tomorrow, to see if I can improve even more. Now that I have the right technique, it's doing a real job on my knee. And the examestane doesn't help. The heating pad and ibuprofen are my friends! Maybe I will do some easy yoga later on to loosen up a little. Oh, and housecleaning like crazy. We have a bunch of friends coming over tomorrow to help with my second annual "pillow project." Before my BMX I was given to heart shaped pillows made from fleece to use post-op. I actually used them for months because they were very comforting. You put them under your armpits to cushion the incisions (mastectomy or lumpectomy). I liked them so much that a group of us made 48 of them last year to take to the surgeon's office, and we are doing it again tomorrow afternoon. I will deliver them to the surgeon on my birthday!

Re: metformin - I am taking it for prevention of a recurrence. When I asked my oncologist, he didn't want to prescribe it for me. but when I brought it up with my PCP, he thought it was a good idea, so I'm taking it. Here are some articles of interest:

hi all and welcome new members! Olaf, if you haven't already, please check out this thread:

Guidelines on Exercise For Those With/At Risk for Lymphedema (pretty much all of us)

    https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/58/topic/801453?page=1

patoo, sorry about diabetes dx. My bro has it and is doing well. He eats per the glycemic index. Heard of it?

Ruth, LOVE the Ellen penguin shake and LB thx for posting the link.

odie, glad you're OK. How's the car shopping going?

badatusernames, sex definitely counts as exercise! My doc told me use it or lose it and I chose the former.

Martha, I'll check TS for Pittsburgh area ... maybe Cleveland, or Philadelphia or Wheeling, West Virginia?

Close-out of a big project due Fri so this badger is busier than any beaver but walked 12.5 miles this week.

It was pretty nice here today (ie the sun was out & the wind was not blowing at 30 mph), so I waited until 10:30 (when it had warmed up to a balmy 32 degrees) and went for a very nice, long walk.

Patoo, even though my checkup was good, I have some things to work on. My ratios were very good so the doctor wasn't concerned; but my overall cholesterol was up, and I was mad at myself because I know why.....when I was working, I ate oatmeal every weekday morning for breakfast, and skim milk/a salad/and fruit for lunch. Since I have retired, I have been skipping breakfast (saving the calories for 'bad' purposes), going out to lunch a lot & also to coffee (where a scone/bar/cookie tastes so good). So, my resolution is: get back to eating oatmeal 5 days a week, only drink the coffee when I go to coffee, get back on the fruit & veggie train, eat out less often & order smarter when I do. Sigh!!!!!!

Did a quick search of TS locations, nothing near Pitt but several in the Poconos and many elsewhere.

There are three in North Carolina - Fairfield Mountains, Sapphire Valley and Fairfield Harbor

Two in Tennessee - Nashville and Smoky Mountains (Dollywood anyone?)

Not sure non-owners can search resort locations, but try https://www.clubwyndham.com

I've been mostly off this week due to medical tests for my son and my colonoscopy. I got the 10 year pass so I'm glad to not have to do that again for a long while. Today I got back to walking with a 35 minute walk outside and a 2 1/2 hour shopping trip at the mall. .

Patoo so sorry about your surprise diagnosis but you know we'll support you in your health venture. You can do it!

Rhody what a great idea, those little pillows. I could have definitely used something like that. And I love massages.

I know I missed several pages this week but are we saying we get to add sex to our exercise quotient? I can't wait to tell my husband that. Winking

11/22- 35 min (7.22 miles) on the bike at the gym tonight, plus lots of exercise with yard work today. Another day with 10K plus steps on the Vivofit.

Flaviarose- that is an interesting article about metformin reducing cancer reoccurrence risk. I am going to read more on this and also talk to my MO in January. Thanks for sharing!

I did some work this AM, then out for a 20+ mile bicycle ride. Could I ever tell that I was overdue for some serious exercise! Felt great, and then I had a couple of slices of pizza when I stopped by the local Natural Foods market for a few items. This followed by a hot bath and long snooze. All good and much needed.

Hoping for a Pumpkin Pie Warm Up Ride tomorrow with cycling club members. Last year's winner was the above market, and when I discovered the area where I now live.

I couldn't believe how much I needed some serious cardio. Opened up my lungs and got a lot of oxygen in my system. Late November light was just glorious, and even got a bit of sun. My goal is to be back on track by Sunday week. Plus fit in some of the above-mentioned exercise with my guy. THAT works so much better when generally fit overall. Otherwise, not enough stamina.

Planning a nice dinner, candlelight, wine, and then another long sleep. So nice to catch up from my travels. BTW - I learned during my Miami Beach trip how few vegetables most people eat. I am still amazed that in a place where they grow year round, so few would show up in restaurants. But they were extremely scarce, even when ordered on the side. And most fruits appeared to be consumed in tropical drinks....though Nadine and I did find a juice place.

Thinking tomorrow's meal will be a nice thick pea soup. Lots of vegetables if hardly vegetarian. With some good bread. I will be one happy lady.... - Claire

Jazygirl, thanks for the encouragement. And, yes, I needed something to make me take more control of my health. Could have been much worse than diabetes.

FlaviaRose - thanks, will check out those links later today. I am on a low-dose but if it also helps with lowering bc recurrence than it's a benefit that will kill 2 birds with one stone.

Badger, yes, I heard of glycemic index. Briefly checked it and need to go back and learn more. There are different thoughts on its benefits when used alone but you can get good information from all sources and put together what works for you.

ruthbru, it is so easy to get off track. We see something and say, 'well, one won't hurt', totally forgetting about the 'one' we had yesterday, 'two', the day before, etc.....

On way to church then pool.

    Later sculpted friends.

Patoo- the South Beach diet book has a great list of low to high glycemic foods. There are some fruits that are high glycemic that I try to avoid on a regular basis, but many fruits which have lower sugar contents. I am sure you can find many good references on line too.

Having my coffee and catching up on my internet before I head out for a walk and more shopping. We have a little drizzling rain going so I'm hoping it will pass. If not I'll get out the umbrella and go. Its so much easier to get out in warmer temperatures, even though I'd still rather have sun.

Love those pics Badger. We had snow one Good Friday and we made an Easter Bunny snowman. Might as well have fun with it, right?

Lilac thanks for asking about my son. We actually are still waiting on the results, waiting and waiting, but its pretty certain he will need at least a minor surgery. I'll be relieved if its only minor.

Actually for all of us it seems better to keep our glucose in check and so I can see why metformin would help. I believe we are eating way to many carbs in general in this country, and that's why I try to only eat fruits and vegetables as my carbs. Patoo, I heard an easy way to remember fruit's glycemic index. Berries are the lowest, tropical fruits are the highest (pineapple, mango, banana) and typical fall fruits (apples, pears) are in the middle.

Claire you are so right about the vegetables. Other than salad, you can't hardly get a vegetable in many restaurants. I'm surprised Miami didn't do better though. I know when we were in the Keys I felt like we ate so much better than Chicago, but maybe that was because of all the fish. I came home and noticed how even our salads in the restaurants are heavy on cheese and bacon.

Outback offers steamed broccoli or  steamed mixed veggies as a side dish option. A local restaurant here offers grilled veggies for an option too.   Keep looking and asking for them!  We all need healthy options.  (although I do admit to splurging on a loaded baked potato once in a while)

Vegetables are standard here in Seattle. But so not true elsewhere. I am amazed that very few complain. And you shouldn't have to go to a vegan place to get them.

It was raining earlier this morning but not now. Hoping all holds up so I can do the pumpkin pie ride. Otherwise, it will the trail solo so that I can get in another 25 or so miles. I feel so much better from yesterday's ride. Slept really well too.

And yes, the broccoli and sweet potato were just delish with my dinner. Off to the supermarket to get the other things I need for my pea soup plus a few other items. Think some good bread too. (That didn't exist in Miami Beach either.) - Claire

my gosh I miss a couple of days and I have a couple of pages to catch up on. Patoo sorry you got slammed with the diabetes diagnosis and you're right it's the one today, and one more tomorrow that gets us, typical my favourite fruits are mango and papaya but I do try and eat an apple as my afternoon snack. Badger those photos are hilarious but I feel so bad for those poor people in Buffalo, also don't laugh but remember when we drove across the country last year we ended up in Pigeon Forge / Dollywood by accident and loved it, we said we'd love to go back.

So Thursday night did Body Jam, yesterday did Spin and Body Pump this morning plus half a Body Step class
