My husband uses coke also to clean off his batteries.
I never liked gatorade.....but, I did follow the Lakers back in the day when Pat O'Reilly was the coach. Larry Byrd was always the enemy.

Hello there, SlowDeepBreaths! (Girl who has so many memories a single thread can't contain them!)
Somehow, I never got around to the Coke experiment, but I did have a chemistry set from Sears.
Couldn't find my exact set, cause I know it came with a microscope too. It came with slides of blood and insect wings, etc. It was half biology, half chemistry.
O.K. (tell me I am not crazy...) does anyone remember "Weather Predictors" made out of cardboard? They would be some shape and they would turn pink for rain and blue for fair weather? Or maybe I have that backward. I'm pretty sure I am not crazy, because I had the chemical to make those in my set. I just could not find a Google picture of anything like it

Something else I remember was another predictor , it was a
red celophane fish.Y ou had to hold it in your hand and it would curl up. I kind of remember girls using it to ask
another girl if she liked so-and-so.

And then there were these fortune tellers. Made 'em in school.

My brother had one of those kits with a microscope (he never let me touch it).
I loved those paper fortune teller thingys!! I make them for the little ones in our family!!
I don't recall seeing the fish though.

We made so much out of so little:
Carnations (or pom poms) out of Kleenex. Those "palm trees" made from newspaper. I made a little Christmas tree out of TV Guide once. Reader's Digest worked too.
And pipe cleaners, just the plain white ones for actual pipes, before the craft store started selling them in multi-colors.
Compared to today, we didn't that have much, but our parents told us we had so much. Such a parental thing to say.
If that's true, they must have been down to a stick, some dirt to draw in with it and the ever available bottle cap.
It was the Depression after all.

those cardboard weather predictors with MY chemistry set!You mixed up a chemical that would absorb
moisture from the air and turn one color, then go back to the original color
when it dried out.I can't remember
which way the colors went, either.Only I remember painting the solution on a card, you could paint some sort of shape or something simple like that.

I remember my Mom making a Christmas Tree from a catalog, too.
I think she spray painted it green, then glued little ornaments on it.
That fortune teller thing was very popular in my school. Very. And some of the fortunes were NOT nice!
I don't remember the fish thingy, looks like fun, though.

NM, Cobalt cloride...yeah, that's it. Thank goodness I am not certifiable (at least about the Weather thingy.) The one I did not make came with a thick absorbant tissue pad cut into a shape (maybe of a cloud) and mounted on a small card. Like you might carry it around with you. Can you imagine. "Hey, I felt a drop, let me get out my card to check for sure."
That is the exact mood ring I had, no frills. Mine always showed up blue with green in it, which you can see from the chart is pretty open to interpretation.
Pretty sure I mentioned these before, but so worth bringing up for an encore: The slave bracelet!

elimar! My cat would love that thing you made out of paper. I've never seen those before. I've NEVER seen a weather predictor either.
Now the mood rings I'm familiar with. I recall all of my friends having really cool colors on theirs. But, mine would always be blackish/brown. hahahaha Guess I was stressed and fearful! I wonder what it would be today???!!

I had a couple of mood rings. I don't remember it ever being any of those yellowish colors! I'm not familiar with slave bracelets. Maybe they were before my time?

Wow, I had to go back to the Lone Ranger Pic to get caught up. We watched that on occasion because my mother liked it. Never watched Sky King but did watch a lot of Flipper and Gentle Ben (Starring Ron Howard's little brother Clint). CLint Howard never really did anything else on his own that I remember, but Ron puts him in some small role in each of his movies.

Hi Meece! Clint Howard has been in tons of movies, not just his brothers, as a character actor. You reminded me he was also in original Star Trek on t.v.

Yes, I watched Star Trek, but I'm no Trekkie. Lost In Space was more my speed, w/ Dr. Smith's sassy robot.

Only really remember seeing the Roy Rogers one. And then, we also had Red Barn. (factoid: They had the "Big Barney" burger a few yearsbefore the "Big Mac" showed up.)

I absolutely loved Lost In Space. When I was in first grade, a neighbor kid and I used to play Lost In Space everyday. However, I could never decide whether I wanted to be Judy or Penny!

LuvMyGoats - If you listened to Sky King, did you also follow Sargent Preston of the Yukon? I listened on the radio but google says it was a TV series from 1955 - 1958. We didn't have a TV then but I loved to be sick & stay home from school to listen to the day time radio shows.

My first husband worked at a Texaco station during the summers when he was in school. Remember -"Take your car to the man who wears the star".
