Beans and franks every Saturday--a Maine standard.  So how come I got bc???? Ask your friend that for me next time you see her, ok, kittykat?

NM- Love the picture!  The lady was working at this crazy wig place I went to this weekend.  NOW... if you work at a wig place, you would think you'd come across cancer patients once in a while!  Why would you say that???

    Hi Kittycat,

Possible response "Hmmmm....interesting...I guess it could have been the beans....or it could just be that breast cancer is less common among stupid people."

Probably best not to use this response, but it is fun to think about it.

    Take care,

    Sandy

Sandy- Nice response!  I won't say it but I'll definitely be thinking it from now on and I'll be able to keep a smile on my face when people say stupid things!Smile

Nope, I don't think it is beans. Let's see, I don't eat brussels sprouts or cauliflower, almost never drink beer, and I have never smoked... oh and I don't usually swear or spit in public. I suppose smoking, swearing, spitting, drinking beer, and eating burpy vegetables prevent breast cancer?

Someone asked me what caused me to get breast cancer... smoking???  Uh, no.  I don't smoke.  I might have made a sarcastic remark, but the guy who said it got me a blanket at the imaging center (I was freezing).  I realized he was a really kind man, who just didn't know anything about breast cancer.  He was there with a lady who was on chemo (maybe she had lung cancer???).  Anyway, I kindly explained to him that they really don't know what causes breast cancer, but I did have the gene that made me more prone to have it.  Maybe I educated someone???  Let's hope!

AStorm--sorry to offend!  Wink  There's a long argued difference of opinion about 'traditional' Saturday night beans-n-franks in Maine:  whole franks vs cut up franks.  I like the whole franks better, but maybe you's prefer the cut up ones?

Did anyone else notice research report in JAMA on the big study on high fruit and veggie diet and bc recurrence?  The conclusion of the study was that a diet high in fruits and veggies does NOT reduce the rate of recurrences.

    JAMA. 2007 Jul 18;298(3):289-98.
Influence of a diet very high in vegetables, fruit, and fiber and low in fat on prognosis following treatment for breast cancer: the Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) randomized trial. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Multi-institutional randomized controlled trial of dietary change in 3088 women previously treated for early stage breast cancer who were 18 to 70 years old at diagnosis. Women were enrolled between 1995 and 2000 and followed up through June 1, 2006.

INTERVENTION: The intervention group (n = 1537) was randomly assigned to receive a telephone counseling program supplemented with cooking classes and newsletters that promoted daily targets of 5 vegetable servings plus 16 oz of vegetable juice; 3 fruit servings; 30 g of fiber; and 15% to 20% of energy intake from fat. The comparison group (n = 1551) was provided with print materials describing the "5-A-Day" dietary guidelines.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Invasive breast cancer event (recurrence or new primary) or death from any cause.

CONCLUSION: Among survivors of early stage breast cancer, adoption of a diet that was very high in vegetables, fruit, and fiber and low in fat did not reduce additional breast cancer events or mortality during a 7.3-year follow-up period.

Funny how we never hear about this, isn't it?

I don't care about the study showing fruits & veg don't help with bc recurrence - what I'm waiting for is the definitive study that PROVES that chocolate cures cancer.

Heck, it's already been linked to heart-health.

You know, I get sad when I see newly-diagnosed saying they're going to beat their cancer with fruits and veggies, juicing and enemas...or whatever! Your body runs on chemicals...why do you think they give you chemo as treatment? Why not just shove carrots up your a$$??? Sorry, that's a sore point with me....(obviously!) Embarassed

barbe - I rather felt that the horse was out of the stable when I was dx and that carrot juice and Co enzyme 10 weren't going to do a lot to fix it - 'lop 'em off' was my definitive answer to the 'alien' and I hope that worked!

Thanks, NM. That looks less like a dachshund.

I have been a vegetarian most of my life. My mom was a nutitionist (she had bc too) so I've always had a healthy diet -- stay away from nitrates and artificial ingredients and eat a TON of organic vegetables and fruit. I also worked out daily for most of my adult life, never smoked and I live in a place with comparatively clean air. Maybe they're just poorly designed. If they had ziplocks we could just replace the stuffing as needed.

Leah_S- A study about chocolate?  I would be the first one in line for the clinical trials!!!

    Astorm- Ziplocks!  LOL!!!!!!

So the dumbest thing said to me was by my PS today.  I was upset because I am getting a lot of rippling post exchange and she basically said there was nothing she could do about it and, more than likely, it would be permanent.  When she saw how upset I was she said, "I should show you some photos of other women who have been really disfigured from their MX and then you would feel so much better about your results."

Kate.....I would find a new PS!!!  Doesn't matter how other women look...it only matters how you feel about how you look....I had two revisions following my exchange....after the 1st revision and had some problems again, I consulted with the supposed "best" PS in town....when she saw me, she said "if that was her job, she would pat herself on her back"....that just confirmed how good my PS was, and I was going to let him do the 2nd revision...2 years later, things are still looking good.....for me it was all about how I felt how I looked!!!!

Kate, I'd like to b*!ch slap that PS.  How dare her?  I had some rippling after my exchange, but knew I'd have nipples placed a bit later.  I made an appointment prior to the nip surgery.  My PS said, "We usually don't see someone again, before this surgery."  I put my hand up and asked him NOT to talk until he heard what I needed to say.  I accused him of doing a "drive by" on the days of my surgeries because he would run in, get me to sign forms, ask if I had questions (mind you, I was drugged up and very anxious) and then run out.  I told him I needed to  talk to him without all that prior to the surgery.  He became attentive and listened.  I still have a small  bit of rippling, but not like before.  After the nip surgery, he was disappointed he did not get it perfect.  I told him I was very satisfied  because I did not want to go under again.  Of course, he wanted the pictures to keep for his collection.  I've posted on tintam's site, I think you have seen them.  Are you gonna try again?

kate33, with regards to Leah S's mention of chocolate and health,  here is a recent article on a study about the beneficial effects of chocolate for the heart.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/24/health/research/24diet.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=chocolate heart&st=cse

Munch on, not too little but not too much!!

    mbtlcsw01,

Congratulations on the results and on making your PS a better doctor.  I am confident that he will here the phrase "drive by" ringing in his ears for a long time.

Thanks for the support everyone!  I think my DH thought I was overreacting to her comment.  He thought I was upset about the rippling.  I told him I understand why the rippling is happening.  What I don't understand is why no one told me there was a possibility it could be permanent.  But the bigger issue is if a women voluntarily decides to have augmentation she is allowed to be concerned with aesthetics but because we have had BC we aren't?  That was the impression I got from my PS and, yes, I will be seeking a second opinion.

mbtlcsw- That took a lot of guts to sit your PS down, and notself is right, you have made him a better doctor by doing that.

Ok, I got one today. And from a friend I would have never, ever expected it from.

So, today I got the news that, following the level I ALND I had undergone on Friday, all nodes have come back negative. Yay! Right?

Wrong. This friend (after yay-ing with me) sends me this email that starts with

    "Cancer is a strange cell.
You can go along for years in remission
and then one day it pops its head up again.
If you ever have it you will never be free of it.
Pray for the day there will be a permanent cure."

Well thank you so much for sending me this the day I was happy that my nodes were clean!!!!!

    WTF?
