Blue, my onco explained it this way. If you have LCIS, the chances of developing another kind of breast cancer in the other breast is increased as well as in the LCIS breast. If you have DCIS only, the chances of developing breast cancer in the other breast is not increased more than expected. That's why LCIS is so worrisome. LCIS is also more difficult to diagnose. That was certainly my situation. They found DCIS on the right and wanted to do a lumpectomy only, but I insisted on a double mastectomy even though nothing had shown up on the other side in two mammos and an MRI. The pathology report showed lots of LCIS in the left breast, so I'm glad I went for the BMX. The cancer was caught before it was invasive, there was no node involvement, and the margins were very wide with the BMX, so the onco says no radiation is needed, no hormone therapy, and no chemo because there is no evidence of disease at this time. We'll recheck every 6 months.

The onco says in order to have DCIS recur, you have to have ducts. That's where it grows - no place else. If you don't have ducts anymore because of the BMX, you cannot develop DCIS. Same with LCIS. No lobules, no LCIS. BUT that doesn't mean you can't get a recurrence of another type of breast cancer.in the tiny bit of breast tissue that remains or somewhere else in your body, especially if you had LCIS. That's why you must still remain diligent and see your onco.  No mammogram needed but an MRI or ultrasound is recommended along with self exam. I have Allergan 410 gummies.

So very glad I wasn't drinking my tea!! Oh. My. Goodness!!!!!

    ROFL!!!!

On an analytical note they are quite level, but appear uneven in size. And there seems to be some rippling. Ha!!!!  And I sure hope that's her bladder leaking and not a saline puncture.  Loopy

Whippetmom, Mimi, Lilah, thank you and yes, Lilah is taking care of me. Three more days and I will have new foobs, I am so happy!

Mimi, I trust the PS, I have a number of friends that for bad news like mine (they are older than me and had them for many years already) met my PS and he did reconstruction on them, and they look fabulous.

My concern is that the PS said I could go back to work right away, having surgery this Friday and going back to work on Monday, not sure if that is possible!

Whippetmom, that post was meant for this thread BUT it was an answer to a post from Jan. 19th about the chances of recurrence. I was on vacation last week and was catching up on all the "old" posts. This thread is so active I think I had four pages to go through in a week.

I have a bad habit of thinking a post is the most current one when it is followed by the "Post a Reply" at the bottom. I never seem to remember to look up to the page number and see if there are more pages. Actually, it would be more helpful if the website didn't put an opportunity to post at the bottom of every page. Maybe no one but me ever makes the mistake though. Loopy

Loved the cartoon. I would definitely go to a retirement home for TE/Implant survivors. My husband would like to come too. He'll be the hot old guy with an appreciation for boobs/foobs of all sizes and kinds. He's been in training for that position his whole adult life!

For those thinking of changing your size to be much larger or smaller than before, you might have to buy new clothes. I hadn't thought of that. Packing the night before my cruise was a real challenge. I hadn't shopped since my final try at permanent implants in December, but somehow thought I could just reach into my "cruise closet" (this was cruise #9) and toss some summer things in the suitcase for the Caribbean. I had gigantic breasts before. I never used to have to try on a bra...if it fit over my head like a cap, it would be the right cup size. Headphones Now nothing fit!  Most everything had billowing chest fabric or they were too low under my arm and showed off my 'still to be reconstructed" damage from my post-BMX infection, Frankenstein scars, and mudflaps that look like mini-boobs themselves. So depressing. I ended up wearing t-shirts instead of sundresses and sleeveless tops. For the two formal nights I used some safety pins and added little short-sleeved knit jackets to the least ill-fittings gowns I own. Didn't look great, but at least it didn't look like I was a little girl dressing up in her mommy's dress. Bathing suit? No way. <sigh> Cruise #10 is in August is to Alaska so I'm not going to have to worry about bathing suits or sundresses, thank goodness.

WHIPPETMOM: my BS has suggested I try just getting a small implant in my cancer side to fill it out after the lumpectomy, instead of doing a P/BMX due to having had rads. How would I go about determining the right size implant for this? I would assume i would need some sort of implant on the left as well to make them both even??? confusion... would implant size be based on what i want or just on what the dr. can fit under my rads tissues?

Sandra....Wow....glad you responded to that post then for "Blue", because I never saw it!

bluewillowskys:  This is now considered an augmentation.  It all depends on calculations the PS will take of existing breast tissue and other factors.  You just need to leave it up to him at this point.

very nervous now waiting for tomorrow's surgery!

I sometimes think I am a pain in expecting things flowing the way they should be, but I don't think it is normal:

-To have to call my PS office and find out the time the nurse from the Operating Room told me to be there was the time of the surgery and now two hours early

    - That nobody called me to let me know they change the time and building in where my surgery would be held

    - To receive a call the afternoon before the surgery from my PS office asking for my PCP phone number because they never got the clearing to proceed

    - To have to change my ride to the hospital last minute because my DH got a last minute meeting and he can take me but not pick me up until later

    UGH!

Ohmmmmm... Please whoever knows how many days I have to rest after the surgery please let me know. PS told me by Monday I could drive and work..??? Is that true?

    Headeast,

It IS an easier surgery than BMX, but my PS told me no lifting more than 10 pounds for two weeks and no exercise for 3 or 4.

I cannot imagine going back to work in a couple of days! What kind of work do you do?

P.S. EVERYONE is nervous the night before!!!!

Headeast, i had my surgery last Thursday, and on Saturday i drove to my daughters' swim meet and stayed all day...I mean all day...swim meets go from 10:30-5:30.  I had even forgotten to take tylenol and I was fine, though i was careful to pick a seat away from everyone so I would not get bumped. I took no prescription pain meds whatsoever when i got home...just plain Tylenol on Friday.  I should say that i do tend to bounce back from surgery pretty easily...probably easier than most.  Hope all goes well tomorrow!!!!!'. Tomorrow I have my post op visit...hoping to ditch the surgical bra...not sure how long they typically have to stay on.

I just got moved up to Monday for my exchange.  Yeah! So excited to have the TEs out. He's still doing textured, I asked more questions and I'm good to go.  More drains but that's a necessary evil. Probably only a week this time.

Headeast-I can't image having to go to work 3 days after any surgery. What about drains? Do you have to go to work? And you shouldn't be driving if on pain meds. Good luck tomorrow.

smaarty, PS told me no drains. Thank you for the wishes!
