Haven't posted in a while, but I've been doing lots of reading! I read The Samurai's Garden (I really enjoyed it; it's beautifully written), The Piano Teacher (I also enjoyed this one. Having just been to Hong Kong this past spring, I loved reading about what it was like during WWII). I also read The Memory Keeper's Daughter (I wanted to like it, but had a hard time suspending my disbelief) and The Hummingbird's Daughter (It was well written, but I don't really like magical realism. Still, it was a worthwhile read). I'm a huge Tom Robbins fan and read Jitterbug Perfume. I absolutely love everything he's writtien. His books are so imaginatively absurd. It's pure indulgence for me. I'm finishing up Stranger of the Wind and have really been enjoying the mystery and intrigue. I think next I'll read The Secret Daughter which seems to be a popular favortite here. I got a Kindle for Christmas and download A Stolen Life and Unbroken. I've been reading so much fiction lately, I need a little non-fiction break. I'll take any other non-fiction recommendations!

Ruth...Finished Destiny of the Republic.  Wonderful.  It was on my list and then I recalled you raving about it...so it gave me the kick to get started on reading it.  Once I started...I couldn't put it down.  Funny story...I brought the book with me to a doctor's appointment along with this book that I'm reading about The Holland Tunnel.  Anyway, the doctor kept running in and out of the room and on his 4th visit, he asked, "I have a question."  "What is it?" I replied.  "Could I take a look at the book you're reading....I might be interested in reading it," he replied.  And on that note, I asked what he was reading and he said, "Destiny of the Republic."  At that point, I whipped out Destiny of the Republic that I was carrying in my bag...in case I became bored with The Holland Tunnel book.  Anyway...we ended up talking about books and it seems, after numerous emails, we've been separated at birth!  We bonded with one another after he said he read "Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure."  I looked at him and said, "How'd you like when Bess told him to put the luggage back in the attic?"  AMAZING.......

Anyone interested in a "Book Club?"  One where we all agree on a book, read it and then discuss it?  We could discuss through messaging here, facebook, chat, sykpe, ooVoo, or whatever.

Voracious:  I've had the same experience with my GYN doc.  She & I have traded book ideas for several years.  Makes it almost fun to go to the doc.

A friend just brought me the new Faye Kellerman & the new John Lescroat from the library.  She gets on the lists & reads them in a day so I get to piggy-back w/i worrying about the lists.

I got a Kindle too, but I haven't figured out how to download books from the local library.  Any hints?

I haven't posted much since finding this thread a while back - I actually have gone through a phase of not having the attention to read much, although it's one of my favorite things.  But I was bound and determined to finish Cutting for Stone which I have have picked up and put down since the summer, and I'm so glad I finally read it.  It definitely got better for me about 1/3 of the way in.  Then I read The Hunger Games last weekend - I see what all the hype is about!  I immediately downloaded my one free book for the month (Amazon Prime trial memebership!) - the HG sequel Catching Fire, and I can't put that one down.  I guess it shows that I have the attention of a young adult right now, and not an actual adult!

Thanks for all the great book ideas - my wishlist is very long after reading all of your posts!!

Oh - I also ordered If Not Love for less than $2 on Amazon the other day!  FYI on a great price.  I'll read that one after I finish this trilogy.

I'll echo Apple- I really want to read the Hunger Games too!  Fingers crossed the library has it tomorrow when I go.....

I am almost done The Dove Keeper...pretty good.  She confuses me sometimes when she jumps around  but I like it.  It was actually good that I read The Red Tent first as they refer to the same people in the Red Tent.

Oh I'd also be interested in a book club as I've totally stalled on books! I had been reading like crazy for years now I just can't seem to get into anything. I have two going now and just don't seem to get interested... I got my Kindle on Black Friday and was so excited - still haven't downloaded a thing! how awful is that?

I second, or is that third or forth your book doctor! I'd love to have a doctor I actually like! LOL!

I too could be game for a book club....

Finished The Dovekeepers last night- the ending is shocking.

I downloaded The Hunger Games to my kindle for a little over 4 dollars and picked up the second one at the library today.  I am about 5 chapters into the first one and I must admit....it is good from the first page so far!

Laurie08: I finished Stranger of the Wind the other day based on your recommendation. Thank you! I enjoyed it and it's not something I would have ever gone for without someone selling it to me. Started The Secret Daughter today and I'm loving it. I'm pretty sure I'll fly through it.

mcsushi- so glad you liked it!  You should check out his other books, The Angels Game and The Prince of Mist.  Love him!  It was funny because I went to a bookstore I had a gift certificate to and was looking for a certain book, they didn't have it and the man working there starts recommending books to me.  I had read everything he was suggesting and he says ok- here is a different one and recommended the author Carlos Ruiz Zafon.  I looked to see when it was published and knew I could get it at the library because it was older than 6 months.  So I made a note of it and a couple months later picked up one of his books.  Such a nice surprise!

i'm in,  I love a list of books to get started on.  I am going to go back over the old posts and make a list.  I will try post a few ideas too.  The only one I can think of right now is a story about an elephant and I can't remember the name.

     Like the book club idea!

Enjoying " The Brightest Star in the sky", at the moment, by Marion Keyes, Irish writer, very popular in Britain too. It's very light, humourous reading. Just finished "The Understudy", by David Nicholls who wrote "One Day", which was also good and made into a movie last year.

Always love new reading suggestions from everyone on here!

I'm in two bookclubs and barely have time to read what I want. Or I'll ignore the bookclubs. One is on line at a site called Good Reads (Constant Reader and Classics Corner--been with that group for 15 years!) the other is a neighborhood group.

Currently reading Gone With the Wind for the Classics group. Hadn't read that in years and years, though I've read it countless times and seen the movie countless more. Not sure how I like the book now--very descriptive, which gives you a tremendous sense of place and time, but also bogs me down a little!

I just finally read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" - really enjoyed it. I understand everyone read it a few years ago and I'm late - now I'm going to read the other 2 books in the series.

I follow this thread along to get ideas for books. Would definitely love a book club idea! Was on vacation during the holidays and read book by Penny Vincenzi "The Decision". She writes sort of epic family stories. It was a good beach read. I started the new Stephen King book "1963"--my boys bought it for me for Xmas. I have a kindle but can't get into reading on it...still love turning the pages...my 12 year old loves the kindle and just re-read Harry Potter on it. Keep posting the ideas of books. I keep a list to remind me. If a book club starts...I am in!

We are doing Room by Donahue for our one bookclub, Missing Mom by Joyce Carol Oates for another and my church book club is doing Rainwater by Sandra Brown.  I am retired, so I manage to keep up with all three clubs.

I too just downloaded Stephen King's "1963" I was so tired last night not sure what all I read and had the font so big I was turning pages like crazy - LOL! For those who are Stephen King fans, our local regional theatre is doing a premier of Stephen King and John Mellencamp's new Musical!! It is called "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County" a gothic horror musical! Can't imagine but I got tickets for it. He has been in town for the last several months. My teenagers want to go and I got tickets now wondering if he is too dark for them.....

I usually get a book on tape for my ride down to dc to visit my grandchildren.  I randomly picked up an old Philip Roth novel called Indignation.  It was really good.  I have never liked Roth, but this book was very well written and very compelling.  Very thought provoking!

love...read Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint a few years back and recall how hilarious it was!  So much better than the movie!  Picked up a couple of his recent books and didn't enjoy them as much.
