Wednesday Weigh In

A year ago, we bought a huuuuge bag of Halloween chocolate candy at Costco on September 1st.
Two weeks later I was dx'd with BC.
I was soooo anxious, I ate half the bag.
A few days later, I read somewhere about sugar "feeding" cancer. That REALLY scared me, so I ate the other half of the bag.
This year, I told DH that we were NOT buying Halloween candy until the day before Halloween. Well, yesterday I decided that perhaps we should be like our other neighbors and just turn our lights off and not give out candy.
I came home to tell DH this, and found the bags of candy he had just bought, out on the counter.
Here's our deal - I'll be gone tonight, ironically, at weight loss class. He'll give out the candy while I'm gone. Then he will hide whatever is left over, and donate it to the youth group at church at his earliest convenience. I told him don't even try to lie to me and say we had hundreds of trick-or-treaters at the door....the usual we get is around 50.
What's funny is that I don't even have the slightest urge to sample any these days, since I'm not back on any sugars or carbs other than fresh fruit.
Happy Halloween, everyone!!!

Sounds like a good plan. I asked DH to buy peanut butter cups because I don't like them. Weird because I look both ingredients, just not together. I'm the same with raspberries and chocolate.

No Halloween candy in this house. If we had children come here trick or treatin', I'd figure out something else to give them. Why should we encourage addiction to sugar in children? Ok, just call me Spook Scrooge!

Still 159. Now if I can just get to 149, and hover there . . .
Spook Scrooge - that's too funny! But yes, it goes against my grain too to be giving kids so much candy. It cannot be good for them. Guess that makes me Spook Scrooge 2 - LOL!

I love dressing up and giving out candy (added exercise benefit for me of running up and down the stairs to answer the door), but have to buy stuff I do not like or there would be none left for them!

Just heard on TV that the average amount of candy taken home, is 7 pounds per kid. Really? That's a lot!

I didn't buy any Halloween candy this year either. Trick or Treat hours started at 4 here, so early. With my commute, I get home after the cute little kids are done. Plus we live on a side street with not much traffic so I thought heck with it. DH and I sure don't need it.
Down a pound this week!

My DIL lets the boys have candy on halloween and the following day. Then it all goes into the reward jar. They get a piece when they fill in a row on the good behavior chart.

My leftover candy goes in the freezer - that way you have to wait for it to thaw a bit before eating it, or risk breaking a tooth. We only had 5 trick or treaters last night - some years we've had none, while other years we've had 20-30, so it makes it hard to know how much candy to buy.

Stayed the same. A little disappointing, but not too bad.
Some small successes to celebrate: I had ONE snickers mini and ONE little twizzler on Halloween night. Ate like a "normal" person. In the past it was always a night where I would consume WAY TOO MUCH candy, eating totally out of control!
In addition, I've worked up to swimming 24 Lengths of the pool at the fitness center at my hospital (lengths, not laps). I started with one length right after chemo and radiation ended and I felt as though I was going to drown! I had so little strength and stamina left that I clung to the pool side and stopped a few times during that first length. I've also noticed that my core is stonger and I stand/walk more upright. I'm not so hunched over like a sick person. It's also been good for my lymphedema arm to exercise in the cool water; working up very slowly is key.
47.8 pounds lost and 57.2 to go (NOT bragging, just keeping track for my chemo brain...)
Have a good week all,

Didn't get to weigh in this week, as we are still without power due to Sandy. But I can assure you I have gained, nervous eating before and during the storm, eating our meals out, and bored eating at home the last sevral days. My jeans are snug this morning. First day my job is open, so I am finally back on line.

Charlotte, good for you on swimming 24 lengths at a time! It is such good exercise, and I am glad it has such a beneficial effect on your body. That encourages you to stay the course, when you see the positive results, right? You go, girl, you're on your way!
As for myself, I am cautiously optimistic that the running that I added to my exercise is beginning to pay off - down a pound this morning. Now if I can just be good over the weekend . . .

Charlotte - AWESOME!!!! Congratulations to you!!!!!

I'm hungry!

I was down 0.3 lbs this past week which is better than nothing.
Ever since the weather cooled down, I have been hungry almost all the time! I had no problem staying within my calorie allowance through the summer but I sure am struggling now. I'm thinking that I may be lucky if I can just maintain through the winter and start losing again next spring...

LovesChristmas-Barb, I think it's some ancestral trait that makes us want to eat in the winter. It makes sense, since most Europeans lived in caves and hunted for food. It's cold in the cave and animals are probably scarce during the winter. So what was a survival skill in the past is now a problem.

LovesChristmas-Barb & Rthbru,
I've been having some sort of "not really hungry, but just want to eat" thingy going on the last few days too!!! I thought it was just me!
Just plain weird. I haven't felt this way in months. It's been cold all day and it's very gray where I live. Maybe that has something to do with it...?
I think I might try something warm to drink. Then I better get myself to the fitness center and excercise away under the bright lights and just pretend it's summer again before I consume everything in sight. Helps to know I'm not crazy or the only one feeling this way.
Ready to Hibernate Mama Bear,
Charlotte

Hi all. I'd like to join your group if you'll have me. A recent lecture at my place of work reminded me why it's so important that we exercise and maintain a healthy weight. I was at a pretty good weight for awhile after I retired, but I'm back working part-time and my weight is back working full time.

Hi Debbie!
I think the wanting to eat more and more fattening food when the weather is getting darker and colder comes from when our ancestors lived in caves, and knew they better bulk up before winter in order to survive......my primordial brain made me eat the dessert!!!!!

hi Debbie, welcome!
When I get a cold-weather sweet craving, sometimes I have a cup of Constant Comment tea. It's flavored with orange and sweet spice, needs no milk or sugar, and is very satisfying. Plus it warms me up. I usually get the decaf.

Hi Debbie and welcome!
It's good to know that I'm not the only one who's hungry now...hehe...thank you for the replies!

Hello everyone. Why is it I start the day so well using my loseit.com tracker for food and then by this time (7 p.m.) I am sooo hungry? I'm ready for some comfort food right now but trying to resist the urge. Weigh in is tomorrow....

Are you getting enough protein? How about a snack of nuts and a piece of fruit around 4? Noon to 7pm is a long time.

I have no excuse as my ancestors did not have to deal with winter in the tropics since the last Ice Age.
Happy to see I'm only up 300 grams from last week after I was up 2 kilos this weekend because of pre-Christmas gatherings. Yesterday was really hectic what with trying to burn off extra calories.

down 1.8......did not cheat at all during the week except for one piece of ice cream cake (celebrating a friend's birthday, so I 'had to' eat it!

Ugh. Up 4 pounds. This is what happens when I sit in the car for 36 hours and eat out for every meal for 5 days.
Sure hoping my PS says I can start exercising soon. And driving. And doing the range of motion exercises. I see him tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm home again, so back to my normal better eating habits. Trying to stay positive here, but it's tough when your stomach is sticking out further than your chest.
Hope you all had a better week!!0 -
Down 1.7. This is mainly due to excercising, because my eating has really not improved!! I am doing the same stuff!!! Not even hungry, but eating anyway!
I will not be weighing in next Wednesday as my Mom, 2 sisters and brother and I are going to Florida for a week on Saturday!! Can't wait for warmer, sunnier weather....... but know that eating will not be good!! We are planning on keeping up with our C25K program (which I am totally enjoying - whoever would have thought so!!) and daily walks. It will be the food that will do me in!!

It's been two week since I've weighed, and I am shocked that I am down .5 to 160.5. I did so much bad eating during Sandy power outage, eating out most meals and overindulging. The last two days I have been "good", and trying to work regular exercise back into my routine. But I know the worst 2 eating months of the year are coming up for me, and I was hoping to weigh less going in to them.
Ruth - awesome weight loss! Fmakj - enjoy your vacation!

- .8 Not much, but better than nothing. But damn. I walk 6-7 miles a day, and stay under 1200 calories. You'd think I'd lose a little more.

Down 1 lb to 133.5. Of course that's still up from a few weeks ago but at least headed the right direction.
