Stitching the pieces together

VERY pretty Meece! You can stiffen them with starch and put them on the tree! Or sprinkle them with glitter like Sheila does!!

Right now they are lightly starched, but I think I will put heavy starch on them. I think I have some white glitter to add as well. Thank you for the compliments.

I love to lurk here. I envy your talents especially quilting. I have been given a quilt by my best friend (stage4) to complete. She mad it as a teeneager, just squares sewn together. I want to put a back on it and eventually turn it into a memory quilt by adding buttons and some lace and whateven else I find. I wish you would let me borrow an ounce of your knowledge and talent.
Meece - I love your snowflakes. I'd like to try them and put some in my windows. I do some crochet but cannot read the instructions. I guess that's what youtube is for.
I guess I'll go back to lurking. Love the work you ladies do.

The biggest help I have found is having a good detailed picture of what the snowflake is supposed to look like. It makes it easier to see when you are totally off track.

And Veggy, glad to see you coming out of the lurking shadows. Someone here is bound to get you on the right track with the quilt.

Veggy we don't bite come out and play with us.....

Wow, Sandy, that's amazing. It must be that people are trying to give from their skills.

I can do simple crochet, but can't read the directions. Made a vest once by following the picture. The snowflakes are really pretty and would look great on my tree.

Here is the sugar starch method for shaping doilies and snowflakes:

Meece - the snowflakes are beautiful!
I am so proud of myself! DH came home yesterday and told me that his sister would be in town today and had something for us. Well, she usually makes a little something homemade, not a big deal, but we had nothing for her and her husband.
I went to my paltry little "stash" and found some cute dog paw/doggie bone/hearts fabric and some Insul-Brite. I made them two hot pads, each 9" square. I enveloped them, then quilted them together using my walking foot and my big curvy zig-zag stitch (who knew I could use them together!). Anyway, they made a nice little gift and he'll give it to her today. This is soooo not like me! I'm never satisfied with anything I make, and I NEVER improvise like that! But I was desperate.....

Always hope - My mom did all my crochet before she passed. Lots are VERY dusty. Need to wash/restarch them. Any good ways of washing you recommend? Bookmarked your starch recpie. Thanks.

Here is one site about cleaning vintage doilies/crochet. You will need to be very gentle. I like the 'jar' method they describe.
Cleaning Vintage Doilies <edited..pasted the wrong link>
There are also several other sites I found with good suggestions. You can google 'cleaning vintage doilies' and get some good suggestions.

I edited the link above. Just wanted to post in case you missed the edit. I pasted the wrong link.

AlwaysHope - Thanks for the doilie cleaning tips. New Years goal.

I'll have to check that link out. I did DIL's bridal shower as a tea party in September. I staarched many of my doilies for that, but today as I was cleaning out the linen closet I found another dozen or so in need of a cleaning and starching.

Thank you. I have hung them on my Little Granny tree in my sewing room. I am working on number six.

Blessings, I am proud of you!!!! You did exactly the level of gift that was appropriate!!! I bet you STILL feel good about that...

Oh, thank you, barbe!
Her gift to us was a handsewn Christmas ornament - little black and white fleece whales, with our names embroidered on them, and some cute beading accents (eyes, holly leaves and berries).
You're right - it was a perfectly appropriate exchange! (DH had to laugh when he told SIL and her husband that they were hot pads. BIL said "Of course they're hot pads....potholders would have hanging loops.") Well, I had the same thing in mind when I made them! Good eye!!!

That's great that the gifts were appropriate and well received.

Wow Blessings! What a great idea!, I would never have thought to make heat pads like that.

Meece love the snowflakes. Blessing what a good idea for heatpads, afriend has given me some fabric to make some as I use even in the warm weather because of the nueropathy damage to my toes, still numb and they get really sore. Hope tomorrow I will get on to DD's quilt - it is growing. Now I have to work out how I am going to quilt it as it will be large for my machine if I sew the borders on first. My friend says I can do it in pieces then join it together.

You've been busy!
Have somewhat nailed down DS & DIL about the nursery decor for our new Baby Boo. I sort of have carte balnche with my design as long as it is Owls. I need to get the basic fabric for the window treatment, crib skirt, and quilt back and I will go from there. The clock is ticking on this one as the baby is due in 15 weeks, but the dr. said he may need to deliver in 12.

It's probably the one thing I don't mess up...yet.

Alyson, I've done a lot of things...but never quilting a piece in two sections and then joining them! I'd love to hear how it's done as I have a top I want to quilt and know it will be too big too roll small enough once the batting is in. As I do wall quilts I'm lucky to not have to use the heavier batting. My batting is thin enough to rip if that gives you an idea of how thin it is!! I just quilted a 48" square and that was almost the limit. Sorry the pic is so small, I can't change it as this is what was emailed to me. Now you'll know why I like BIG pictures!!! This was the commission piece I did. I put velcro on all corners and the middle. Then I stapled the hook side of velcro to a lath and then told them to nail the lath into the wall. Now she can rotate the piece as her mood desires!!! I thought that was rather brilliant of me, if I may say so myself..... edited to say: OH NO!!! I see the picture in preview and edit, but it doesn't show up in the post. Can anyone else see it???

I can't, darnit!

Nope, sorry Barbe it's a no show on mine as well.

It looks like you tried to use a pict from your google mail account. An email maybe? You will need to upload it to something like photobucket or another online site to link to
