ha ha Camille!!! When I was having chemo, I had a mouthwash that was mixed for me at the pharmacy. I've made an appt to see my go this afternoon so I'll get her to write me a script for that again. Just find it strange that it'd start again now. Need to talk to her about new pain in my hip, too. Really hoping it's just se's from the tamoxifen.....
Hope you got some sleep, you need to be fresh for work!!

Nicky, I had the same thing happen to me. About 6 months post chemo, I started getting sores on the back of my tongue and just inside my lips. They would go away for a few days and then more would pop up. On the last round I used a peroxide & baking soda paste on them. Whether that helped or not, I don't know, but they have cleared up and I haven't had any for a week or so now. I had the magic mouthwash during chemo, but I didn't call the MO to get a new script for this. Probably should have.0 -
Yogurt!0 -
thanks Bren58, although I wouldn't wish it on anyone, it's nice to know there's someone else! Have been using bread soda and salt, this had helped a bit but it's definitely time for something else. My tongue now feels like it's too big for my mouth, and it hurts to talk!
Linda, I do eat yoghurt and it is soothing. One thing's for sure; I won't be eating anything spicy this week!

Nicky I got a mouth sore on my tongue during chemo. My onc had me suck on ice for the rest of my infusions so I never had the problem again. I'm sure you know when you have mouth sores not to eat anything acidic. Also my sister used to soak a cotton ball with MOM (Milk of Magnesia) and put it on the sore. Granted if you have a mouth full that might be difficult.
But I will get a mouth sore on occasion even before chemo. I find it best to brush my teeth often.0 -
I just got back from having my port taken out, 51 weeks to the day from when I had it put in. I am so happy to have that thing out of my chest! For me it signals that this awful year is finally over. I know not everyone gets it removed so soon, but when my MO said I could have it taken out whenever I wanted after my last Herceptin, I stopped and scheduled it on my way out after I rang the bell.0 -
Bren58..that is so exciting. I can't wait for that day for me. Congrats on finishing up; early Christmas present fo ryou

Yea, Bren. Another milestone passed.0 -
For those that get mouth sores - check your toothpaste for the ingredient sodium laurel sulfate (SLS). It is linked to chronic mouth sores and is in most toothpastes. I have a long history of canker sores that pre-dates chemo. I read about this ingredient, and the problems associated with it, so after chemo I tried a SLS-free natural toothpaste from Jason and have had far fewer problems. Here is a Livestrong link that discusses some causes and solutions, and supplements and foods that help, and the SLS issue:

YYYAAAYYYY Bren.

SpecialK, now that you mention it, I remember there are certain toothpastes that I cannot use because of that. It is so automatice not to use them, that I forgot about that.
Cami, you crack me up that you wear your better PJ's when you work
You are always bring me a smile or a chuckle!0 -
congrats Bren. Much love to all.0 -

Jumping in to the fray without reading is not good but here I go.. Magic Mouthwash? Ever heard of it?http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/magic-mouthwash/AN020240 -
I haven't gotten mouth sores post-chemo but now I'm worried I will. This past week I've started developing tender spots (at least three) between my toes (my husband says they are warts), I have a small rash (not itchy) on my belly and my big toenail is so raised and ridgy it looks like it might come off. Is this just my immune system finally just overwhelmed by everything it's been through this past year? Has anyone else had these random side effects come up near the end of Herceptin? Today is my fourth last injection.
I hate feeling this physically vulnerable.0 -
ashla, interesting article. I know the Magic Mouthwash that my pharmacist mixed up worked wonders. I like all the SE's listed in the article, same ones we get from Chemo, so how do you tell it's from the chemo or the MM? I guess as long as it works and relieves the pain, that's all that matters.0 -
Bren, so happy for you that port is coming out. I welcome being released from mine as well sometimes in 2014.0 -
Marlene I just read u'r post and the nails are a pretty ordinary thing happening--I just had a fingernail fall off about a month ago yet my other nails are hard??? Itchyness I still have but not rash, but I have heard women talking about a rash long after and unfortunately all kinds of things happen to your skin. BUT I would definitly tell my Dr. any and all things u have any concern about. Well I mean I didn't go to any type of med school even in Guadamala, I'm just another concerned citizen--but really call the Dr.

I had a rash on my leg 6.5 months after I finished chemo but still on Herceptin. It wasn't itchy or anything. By the time the dermatologist had an opening it was gone. We never did figure out what it was. I thought it was this:
but I've consumed that with no problem. Granted there's artificial crap in that so I really shouldn't be consuming it anyway. (But it is tasty and I usually don't like artificial stuff).0 -
Marlene, my NP says that during chemo, it is like your immune system was put in a paint mixer and shook up. I've had all sorts of allergic reactions (tons of hives, I now carry an epiPen and I've never been allergic to anything except sulfa), weird blood test results, and yes, my toe nails fell off around July, after I'd been done with chemo for over 4 months, so no sandals for the rest of the summer (cause it was totally gross, but it didn't hurt at all--weird!).
I currently have itchy patches all over my arms and my skin is very dry. My lab tests are still slightly bizarre--no folate to speak of, not an ounce of B12, high ferritin...I think it just takes us time to get over the insult, and we'll see odd stuff. In the meantime, I have one more herceptin to go, and I finally am feeling like myself again!
Lago, my boss had BC and found herself addicted to Ocean Spray cran-raspberry during and after chemo ;-) She still drinks it. Wonder if it is the benzoic acid in the cranberry...hmmmm....0 -
No cranberry is not the issue. I have craisins in my salad all the time. Plus being from MA I can't be allergic to cranberries.0 -
Ashla,
Thanks for that! Only ever heard of magic mouthwash here on the boards, but after reading your link, I realized that my prescribed 'Bain de bouche #11125' is actually the same thing! You ladies just have a much better name for it. I got a prescription for it again on Tuesday and already my mouth is feeling better. But my major concern was why is this starting again now? None of my tx has changed for ages. I just don't like new se's popping up - it makes me think something else is going on!

Hi Ladies,
Came across this thread and would like to say hi to everyone. I finished chemo in sept and just finished rads last Friday! I am on herceptin every 3 weeks until Oct 2014, it's a long road. I do my infusions by veins at the back of my hand, but they are getting smaller after months of poking (chemo, muga scans, PET scan, etc). I am a bit worried and wondering if weight lifting is gonna pump them up, lol.
TonLee, good stuff from the link "things I wish I knew...". I am going to use some of those techniques when I see my breast surgeon next time!
Karkar0 -
Karkar06- Drinking a lot of water helps your veins. My NP told me to drink a lot of water the night before and the morning/day of my Herceptin infusion. I never had a problem, they used my vein where my elbow bends. Good luck..0 -
Hi Karkar You're getting close to the finish line! Congratulations and welcome to the triple+ thread!0 -
Thanks Eileenohio I will try it next time.
Thanks lago!0 -
Welcome Miss KarKar!

hello Karkar, and welcome!

Nicky, I really wouldn't worry too much about odd things popping up way after chemo. I honestly think we are a bit of a mess for at least a year. I had to run over to Roche's wellness center one day because my hives which started around my mouth were now crawling into the inside and I was afraid they'd go down my throat. I'm one of those people who could walk through a pollen-soaked dewy North Carolina morning and not sneeze. Now I have an epiPen in my purse and in my desk at work, in my glove compartment, by my bed...weird stuff goes on.
Plus I think I need to trade in my stick-shift Saabaru. Pressing on the clutch makes my foot ache. I'm falling apart!0 -
Thanks Pbrain. I guess none of us will ever feel invincible again so it's impossible to just brush things off.
Hi Karkar, I have the same problem with my veins. I use the numbing cream before each herceptin in case it takes multiple pokes to get the IV in. Fun times.0 -
Thanks ChickaD and Nicky!
Marlene, i have never heard of the numbing cream, is it something you get at the pharmacy? Thx!0
