So...whats for dinner?

LOL - "scan karma". Yup - welcome back Cherry.
Yesterday was a hot dog for breakfast and a bowl of cottage & canned peaches for dunch. Then I had 3 (three) glass of Apothic Dark wine while on the phone with several people around the cocktail hour. Needless to say I needed something to absorb the alcohol. Jump-ups - bowl of penne pasta with a bit of left over red sauce, mushrooms and the last of the cooked turkey cut in small cubes. I meant to put cheese on top but I forgot. Warm and soft and comforting.

Just heard from my primary care doc's office and the news isn't good: he is, in the words of his staff, "gravely ill" with COVID19 and in the ICU (they didn't say whether he is intubated); his PA tested negative at the time he fell ill, but now she's feeling sick (has already had both types of flu) and is being re-tested today (and she has little kids at home). Pray for them both.

minus - I have been having cottage cheese with peaches since I have been staying at home - its throwback for me. My mom also often made cottage cheese "salads" with dinner with sliced tomatoes, Catalina or French dressing, and sliced green onion.
chisandy - oh no! Will certainly send prayers, it is so scary, right? Will hope for the best for both.

Tonight was oven hamburgers yum. No sides of course.

Ordering out tonight: pumpkin soup, beet/goat cheese salad, meatloaf with spuds & green beans for Bob, bourbon-glazed grilled salmon & sweet potato slices with julienne veg. for me.

Sandy 🙏 for your PCP and PA. So scary and sad. Our state is reopening but our county is staying closed due to not enough decline yet.
Dinner tonight was crockpot chicken and rice. I needed easy as I had a lot to do. Chicken, mushroom soup, mushrooms, 1/2 cup of rice sprinkled with French onion soup mix. I made steamed carrots to go with it. Actually quite tasty.

Hi Carol and Minus, feels great to be back. Yesterday dinner wes leftovers: Russian cold soup and Persian kebab with rice. I have been planting flowers, hot peppers and tomaters for my balconies and the family got to fend for themselves. Today we will barbecue, ribs, shish kebab of pork😂, sausages and markantes chicken breasts. Sides will be a varit sallad, grilled tomatoes and zucchinis.

The Sam's Club Scan and Go app worked great until I got to the exit door and was told apologetically that I would have to go to checkout because there was a problem with using the app for liquor. Normally it was ok but there was a glitch. I didn't make a fuss. Just turned around and went back to a check out person, who said buying liquor with the app should have been ok. She acted a little annoyed. Oh, well.
I made the crab cakes and had them in the refrigerator, ready to cook when dh reminded me that he had signed up for a wood turning demonstration on the computer from 6 to 9. So we had hot dogs again. I brought his plate to him in the office. It was raining buckets and the tv reception was lapsed so I played games on my IPhone.
Tonight will be the crab cakes and either asparagus or yellow squash.
It rained as much as 11 inches in some places. The morning news was full of pictures of flooding. A distraction from Covid-19.

It stormed so hard here overnight that the power line from the basement to the garage shorted out--for the first time since my landscaper dug the trench for the replacement back last fall before it got too cold & snowy to work on it. The new conduit piping has been lying on my deck all winter & spring. The electrician swears he'll be here Tues. through Sat. It's a good thing the crew installing our new shared privacy fence was here this morning re-hanging my back gate, so one of them could lift & hold the garage door open for Bob to exit. Obviously, I'm not going anywhere except on foot until the line dries out when the GFCI no longer kicks in, and the opener will work again. Meanwhile, he'll park on the street for the time being. (His car is 9 yrs old).
Oh, and the thunder scared Happy so much he forgot to puke.

The crab cakes were especially good last night. DH made a nice remoulade sauce. The side was yellow squash, steamed and browned in butter.
No inkling on tonight's dinner.

leftovers tonight and thinking maybe making chili tomorrow

Thanks for the feedback on the garlic press. I have the Kuhn Rikon, which I like for the ease of cleaning, and the Joseph Joseph that I like because of the larger pieces of garlic left. They both require a certain amount of strength that tax my arthritic hands and wrist and they both smash the clove a bit. I've used both the Trader Joes frozen cubes and the jarred stuff. The TJs is a bit too mild and the jarred garlic a bit too harsh but they are certainly handy to have around. Sandy - your method of smash and mince is probably the best. I despise mincing garlic but I use a lot of it so always looking for a shortcut.
Special - I'm glad for you DH's test result although I keep thinking there might be some relief in knowing it was behind you, at least for a while. Carole, I'm hoping if and when you can get tested you find that you're done and gone with it. Sandy, hope your doc and PA weathers this.
We've had a string of cloudy rainy days that are gloomy. I haven't been able to plant the four tomato plants that are sitting in a trug on my front porch because it was too cold (unheard of to have our heat on in mid May) and now too wet. A couple of days ago, a rabbit boldly came onto the porch and ate the tops off half of the plants. Fortunately, he left some leaves so I think they'll do ok but will definitely require caging. I've never planted so late. What a year.
There have been dinners but they have been anything but inspiring. DH wants pork burgers for dinner. I'm craving Chinese. Who knows where this will lead.
I have crab cake envy.

Nance - Thanks - you enriched my brain this afternoon. I knew I'd heard the word 'trug', and the meaning was clear from your sentence, but I couldn't rest until I looked it up. What fun. I won't tell if any one else wants to guess before checking Wiki.
I too have crab cake envy. Last night I cooked two personal frozen pizzas from Costco. Actually, I enhanced them with more red sauce, fresh sauteed mushrooms & black olives. They weren't bad but I won't buy them again because it was a box of 12. That takes up too much room in the freezer for the value & I'd already given away all but four.
My PCP recommended eating some protein immediately after walking (or exercising) to see if that would help with my calves aching at night. Eggs boiled, peeled & waiting in the fridge now. She also prescribed some NSAID gel, but I don't think I want to risk the possible side effects for muscle aches. Instead I'll try Claritin for a week. Hey, it worked for bone aches after chemo & Neulasta shots - why not? And if it doesn't work, well nothing lost.
So a hard boiled egg for breakfast. The last hot dog in the fridge for lunch. (WHY do they STILL package dogs & dog buns in quantities that don't match???) Dinner will be a large salad.
Carole - do I remember correctly that you're considering heading north on June 1st? Will the trip require two nights on the road or just one? I think you're smart to buy all your food staples before you leave this year.

minus - have you considered magnesium in spray form for your legs? Here is a link. I like that it is a more direct application rather than a systemic approach. I have some friends who use it and really like it.
I also read an article about muscle stress and the helpfulness of casein protein right before bed. The food specifically mentioned is cottage cheese, which you like, right? Easy and worth a try

I have magnesium spray (TheraWorx) for when I get those tibial muscle spasms (I can even see the muscles twitching over the hardware) I've had ever since that ORIF surgery I had after a car smashed my R lower leg back in late '96. I take 500mg of Mg every night too. The nozzle on the spray bottle does tend to clog--and it's hard to spray holding it upright with one hand and aiming it. I bought a foam CVS version, but I hate the perfumey scent. Claritin works for bone pain, but I'm not sure it will do anything for muscle aches or cramps. Have you tried ice massage? Take a paper bathroom cup, fill it with water, & then freeze it. Then, when you need it, massage it over the sore muscle--peeling back the paper as the ice melts. Stop after 20 min. (or you get relief, whichever comes first). It was a Godsend after long, 4-set gigs back in the day, when our bandmembers' arms were sore and weak.
Voltaren gel is now OTC here in the U.S. (used to be Rx-only, and I would smuggle some in from my travels abroad). Unless you slather it on frequently, it should not be absorbed systemically--and even then, not reach the GI tract, which is where oral NSAIDs can cause irritation. I find, though, that menthol roll-ons and arnica gel are just as effective for sore & achy muscles. (And back in the day when I could climb into & out of the tub, a warm juniper-oil bath worked wonders after a vigorous workout. Kneips is the brand I used).
Today, I was about to pop a faux-pizza Margherita (low-carb toast, tomato, basil, mushroom, fresh mozzarella) into the broiler when Bob called and said not to eat breakfast, because he was bringing home Japanese food after an early session interpreting stress tests. So for my brunch I had a half-portion of a large sashimi platter, plus half a bowl each of white & red miso soups. He had part of the hibachi surf & turf with veg., plus one of those iceberg-lettuce (meh) salads that Japanese restaurants serve with miso dressing. We'll split the leftovers for dinner.

TheraWorx doesn’t work for me, which I bought for the severe Charlie horse cramps I often get in the middle of the night. What’s worked best for me is stretching my legs before bed and when I do get a cramp, very warm compresses. I get almost immediate relief from the compress. This is a pain (literally) to do in the middle of the night.
Chinese carry out won the dinner lottery

Today, at the store, was a shelf full of toilet paper. On the packaging was the claim that it was "100% Recycled". I started laughing at one possible implication of that statement. Am I normal, insane or demented? I can't decide. :-)

Eric, ROTFL!
Nancy, the muscle spasms I get aren't usually in my calves), which stretching helps prevent and I can walk off or massage away. They're actually over my tibia--and the very stretches that prevent calf cramps are the ones that set off my tibial cramps! But often the tibial cramps come on spontaneously in the night--and in the worst ones, my ankle dorsiflexes (points my foot up) and my toes splay. Slightly less often, I get foot cramps (the kind caused by pointing my toes, which I can walk off while trying not to scream). I take Mg and K, but they don't seem to help. My orthopod once suggested it's the hardware (screws & plates) irritating the nerves in my muscle fascia--but if I were to remove that hardware my tibia would collapse, even disintegrate, necessitating more surgery or even an amputation. Nothing much else I can do, other than take something like Lyrica--which my insurance won't cover, makes me feel dopey for hours the next day, and can even cause weight gain.

I had a dinner plan last night. Rejuvenate the left over soba noodles, chicken, colored bell pepper dish with some broccoli and more sauce. It never materialized. Thirty minutes before time to eat I called in an order for shrimp poboys and fries to a nearby restaurant. DH went and picked up the order. The procedure went smoothly. The poboys were delicious. Bread was good. Shrimp large and cooked perfectly. Potatoes good.
The restaurant has opened for diners. DH observed that there were quite a few cars. I assume that the owners are following the Phase One instructions, tables spaced apart, only a percentage of the former number of patrons allowed inside.
I will probably discard last night's dinner plan and come up with another one that has a better chance of happening.
We have a couple of appointments at the end of May and plan to depart the first of June. I hope our little cargo trailer isn't too heavy to roll.

Thanks for the muscle discussion. These aren't really leg or foot cramps - I solved that problem long ago with 250 mg of mag/day. These are just the slow continual ache of muscles that have been overworked. Weird that it's only in my calves and strange that it has continued for 49 days. I'm used to muscle ache subsiding once the muscle is "broken in". But I agree, I don't think Voltaren will work. No way could I do ice since I'm always freezing anyway. I could try the warm compress, or a heating pad - but the issue is I don't want to wake up.
I'm interested in Special's casein protein idea. Anyone ever take Casein power or supplements? I got deep into a discussion of the difference between Casein & Whey and it was more than I wanted to decipher.
Upping my cheese intake will be easy. Dinner last night was a cup of cottage cheese with 5 Campari tomatoes.

Minus, thanks for allowing me to do my own “trug” research. I do love looking up words and wasn’t familiar with that one! Doubt I’ll have occasion to use it though.
We ate a lot of grilled chicken last week, and leftovers ended up in a faux lo mein I made using whole wheat angel hair. I even stretched that for more leftovers, which we finished last night. Only because DH picked up a giant bunch of kale, I made a big pot of my sausage kale veggie/bean soup, which I’ll probably try to use to reduce my cooking chores this week. I figure some of the frozen items from Trader’s along with the soup will make a full meal any day I feel uninspired to make a serious entree. Those days seem to be more frequent through this crazy sewing phase.
I thought we were winding down with our mask donations a bit, when suddenly we received a request from a minister in a large economically challenged town, alerting us to the dire needs her community faced. Most distressing was the fact that many food insecure adults and kids were not able to access their donated meals due to lack of masks (now required in our state). She was sponsoring a mask giveaway last Friday for all of those families, so we all got our machines buzzing and cranked out 150 masks. With other groups‘ contributions, she was able to distribute out over 300 masks! Next week, I’ll drive down and drop off more that we sew and it’s nice to have a bit of time to complete them. I will even dare to go to an open fabric store tomorrow to find some kid prints. Clearly since people need more than one mask each for sanitizing purposes, this ongoing project may occupy me for the rest of my years. Ha! I keep hoping to get to make a mask for myself that I really like...maybe will find a fave fabric tomorrow!
Carole, it’s good to hear that you will be starting your yearly journey North soon. Not sure if we will head to the lake for Mem Day “soft opening”. Our association pres hasn’t even decided if there will be a “season opening“ neighborhood meeting yet. This weekend, DS2 and fam are there while their condo is being shown in Boston. Pre-Covid they would have just stayed here, but It’s probably nice for them to have a total change of scenery, too.
Cherry, nice to see your post! You’ve managed a lot!
Special, I'm so glad that your DH had a good test result. May everyone experience the same!
Keeping my fingers crossed that all the “returns to normal” This weekdon’t create surges. I might have to stand on corners giving out masks to resistant wearers! LOL0 -
minus - I was thinking more about your muscle problem and also recalled that my California BFF participated in a CBD topical spray study conducted by a soccer friend’s DH who is at UC Davis. She raved about the sore muscle relief with the spray. If you Google CBD topical spray there are some commercially available. Just a thought. She is super active, walking, soccer several times a week, mountain biking, road biking, skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, etc. She is very fit but does drive herself to the feeling that she “did something” so that she challenges herself. Of course that results in some “hurts so good”sore muscles, and then she uses the spray.

You can now find topical CBD (spray, lotion, cream, balm) in most chain pharmacies, even Whole Foods. Online, I order the balm from Receptra Naturals and Mary's Nutritionals ("Muscle Freeze"); other brands I've seen at CVS are Endoca and Medterra. Topical CBD does wonders for my back, and was my go-to when I was recovering from arm surgery in 2018.
Dinner was potluck, as I was dealing with basement flooding (minor but still annoying, preventing the cats from accessing litterboxes; good thing I had disposables & extra litter upstairs) and my cable TiVO service suddenly refusing to connect to my network (even though the VoIP phone and computer are connecting just fine). Between trying to troubleshoot and finally calling tech support (who had to throw in the towel and set up a service appt.), I killed over an hour. Kitties are also finicky about their food--driving me nuts. Housekeeper supposed to come back tomorrow--if she can get through her alley (and she just finished mopping up her own basement). We had nearly 8" of rain over 3 days--5" of it today & tonight. No way Bob is getting his car out of the garage tomorrow, as the power line to it has almost certainly shorted out again and this time there are no construction guys next door to lift the door and keep it open--Bob is 70, I'm 69, and my housekeeper is 65. I will NOT let him take a taxi or rideshare and further risk his (and by extension, my) life to get to work. He is not the only doctor in the world; besides, the office is temporarily closed and there is a professional cleaning team coming to his office tomorrow to disinfect it. (He had a part-time nurse test positive--she doubtless caught it from a family member because everyone in the office distances and wears PPE).
So I had the other half of my quiche & salad from brunch and made him a sandwich, which he ate with leftover Japanese iceberg-miso salad from yesterday. Cellars threw in a slice of fudge cake this morning, so I nicked about 1/4 of it to go with a decaf breve almond milk cappuccino after supper. Delicious (the cake), but I can definitely go another year w/o having another. Not worth the guilt.

Dinner two nights ago was a pork tenderloin with BBQ sauce glazed on about 10 minutes before it was done, and then again right as I took it out of the oven. Served with a butter lettuce and avocado salad and some roasted potatoes tossed in olive oil and rosemary prior. Last night was the leftover pork, corn, and some chipotle and bacon mashed potatoes (from a mix) that were good. Tonight will be stuffed shells with marinara that has hot Italian sausage. Debating on whether or not to make a peach cobbler with frozen peaches - it would make some room in that freezer. We have been buying everything bread that is baked in the Publix bakery - it is so good! I have been saving the heels and when I get enough I dice it up and make croutons out of it. They are really good, very crunchy, and so easy to make. That is on today's agenda, along with more masks for DH's office peeps. I have to go to the bank today to get a cashier's check for DD. She is selling her boat and took a significant cash deposit that we need to get into her bank account. She doesn't have a local bank, just the long time military bank we use. I have a local account so I can convert her cash to a check for her. I also need to take a sample of the universal flooring in the rental house - that floor is now discontinued and I have decided to tile that area instead, so I need to match the sample to a compatible tile. There is too much potential for the floor to get wet again even though we are moving the water heater outside. The washer and dryer will still be there and it is a small step up, so if there is a leak or overflow the water will travel down the step and we will be doing all of this again, on our own dime. The installer's insurance company agreed to our submitted estimate and we need the flooring so the repair can take place. This damage happened Mar. 6th, so it has been a slow process to get it settled out. So... I am going from not leaving the house at all to going several places all in one day, lol!

Special, I vote for the peach cobbler 😋
We’ve had rain and cloudy weather every day but not as much rain as you Sandy. I think we’ve had about 5 inches in the past five days. There is standing water in our yard and we’re on a slope. On top of that it’s 20 degrees below normal and once again we had to turn on the heat just to take the chill off due to a lack of sun. Worst May I can remember.
I had planned to work outside today but it’s too cold wet and windy so instead I’m attempting my own pedicure. Our nail salon is open and I’m sure they’ll all be masked (omg autocorrect just typed “naked”😲) but I’m not ready. I’m not ready for anything. Anyway, the self pedicure will be challenging since I can’t bend my right knee well and can’t get close enough to see what I’m doing. DH may have to assist. Wouldn’t be the first time.
Eric all I can say about the recycled toilet paper is “Ewww!”
The pork burgers won tonight.

auntie - peach cobbler it is then! LOL on the autocorrect to naked! - naked people in the nail salon with masks paints an interesting picture... I'm with you - not ready, even if everyone is appropriately dressed. It was weird in the bank, all bank peeps had masks and were behind plexiglass, but not all customers had masks. There used to be a fun guy who directed customers around to wherever they needed to go for services - he has been replaced by a huge guy that nobody in their right mind will mess with, which I am guessing is pre-emptive for troublemaking.

My Shipt order today brought me ingredients for my dishes today - lo mein for lunch and kung pao chicken for dinner yum yum yum! My first attempt into Asian cooking was delicious
