"Trombones birthday," Lacey? I love it--much catchier than "diamond jubilee plus one." You two should drive to NY this winter and catch Hugh Jackman in "The Music Man" (opens in January). So sad about your friend's DH--I agree that it drives home that tomorrow is not a given for anyone.

What hit pretty close to home last night was the news that the top entertainment lawyer in town--and likely one of the first women in that specialty--was killed by a van in a hit-&-run yesterday as she crossed the street near the Garfield Park Conservatory (an indoor botanic garden). I've seen her lecture and she was indeed brilliant. She was also the president of a help-for-the-homeless charity. But I'm not so sure it was an accident. Though she had a wide variety of clients, she worked especially closely with the hip-hop/urban side of the music industry; and hip-hop/rap has been notorious for gang affiliations and rivalries, sometimes fatal (Tupac, Biggie Smalls, etc.--plus a number of gang-affiliated rivalry murders locally in the "trap" and "drill" rap sub-sectors). I wonder if it were a disgruntled client, or a rival of one of her clients, who had her tailed. Another reason I suspect it might have been deliberate was that according to her horrified friend, who'd gone to the Conservatory with her and saw it all, after she was hit the driver stopped, got out of the van, then got back in and resumed driving, dragging her body.

Oh my gosh Sandy! That story is just awful & I am so sorry for the woman & her friend.

chisandy - oh no, that is truly awful for the person hit and the friend.

carole - hoping your property and family will be ok. living in FL I am always relieved when a storm tracks elsewhere, but I am always cognizant that this means it will impact another location and cause heartache. Crossing my fingers for LA and surrounding areas. Very scary.

lacey - good to hear that youve been absent due to busy and fun times, wish you were feeling 100% though.

Carole, anxiously looking for pictures/reports fro your area. Hope all are safe.

    Sandy what a tragic story.

Yup - anxious to hear Carole's family is OK. The pictures are horrendous.

Linner was broccoli salad w/shredded cheeses and one ear of corn. Unfortunately the corn is Texas and not Olathe from Colorado.

Did something incredibly dumb with my computer password program resulting in not being able to access most of my accounts. I had a total meltdown since I'd already saved the file & panicked trying to get hold of my son before the automatic back up would have deleted the previous file 15 minutes after I discovered what I'd done. So now finally stopped crying and I'm trying to calm my stomach & sipping Tia Maria. That's probably not strong enough!!

They still haven't found the driver of the van that hit & dragged Linda Mensch. They have podcam video of the van, and a clear hi-res photo of the distinctive license plate (a "vanity" white-on-black White Sox logo plate). That tells me two things: one, the van was likely stolen; and two, a stolen vehicle was used to prevent identification of the driver. This definitely had to have been a deliberate hit--but the local media has yet to do the math. (Those of us in both the local legal and music communities doubtless know the score).

Bob got his booster shot today.

Last night we grilled a ribeye & Vidalia onion; stir-fried Chinese long beans; and an insalata Caprese using our homegrown tomatoes & basil over arugula. Tonight, grilled eggplant parm. (Bought Bob the tamales & empanadas he'd requested, but he came home having had pizza brought into his office by a drug rep.). It was the last neighborhood farmers' market of the summer. No coffee beans--the Guatemalan guy sold out within the first hour (which I missed because I was waiting to have my 7-yr-old original equipment dead battery jumped). This time I got more okra, Santa Rosa plums (MI-grown), striped eggplant and Bob's Mexican stuff--which he'll take to work tomorrow & nuke for lunch.

Relieved to report that my family are all safe and without injury and our house was not damaged. A couple of small trees were uprooted in the yard and the yard is a mess with debris everywhere. We'll have to hire someone to clean up.

A late lunch at Lobo restaurant out in the boonies sufficed for lunch and dinner. We went to Bemidji for a couple of errands and some shopping and decided to eat at Lobo's on the way home. I had a walleye sandwich with a huge walleye fillet much too large to fit on the smallish hoagie bun. DH had a Lobo burger that was too large for him to finish.

Carole, I’m very relieved to hear your news about storm damage. I hope power can be restored sooner rather than later. Seeing the power grid damage, it will be a monumental task.

Last night was reverse seared thick pork chops with a garlic/honey/soy sauce glaze, corn off the cob and applesauce. Tonight is an unknown.

carole - so relieved for you, what a mess things are there, very sad for all that are experiencing hardship right now. So glad your fam is safe. It sounds like what you have at your house is much like what we had after Irma, a nuisance but could have been so much worse.

chisandy - due to the high profile of the victim do you think the investigators are looking carefully enough? Glad Bob got his booster. My DH is up for his soon as he was vaccinated early in the process. Our son was even before him as he is a first responder. He works as a firefighter/hazmat specialist/paramedic on an Army base and his vaccination was handled by the Army, but I don't know what they are doing yet on boosters.

Oh thank goodness Carole. It may be hard to find someone to do the yard cleaning with all the damage in the state, but so glad family AND house OK!!!

Special - did I read somewhere with my muddled brain that you were (or are) thinking of driving to CO to see your son?

minus - yes, that is the plan for the last half of Sept. We had planned to take I-10 and then cut north after NOLA, but may need to re-route on the westward leg due to the storm. I have not seen my firstborn for two years! Hard to believe, but my sense of time is warped by staying home so much - which I am back to, because um...Florida. Sheesh. My BFF from CA will be there in CO also - I have not seen her since Jan of 2020, but we are all vaccinated/masking and we have all been super cautious so we are going to do it! We plan to cook at home - rented a townhouse on Airbnb - and will be doing outdoor activities like hiking/kayaking/drinking wine in the hot tub out back, so hopefully not in close contact with any crowds.

Carole, what a relief! Debris in the yard and small trees uprooted are minor compared to the devastation happening in Jefferson, St. Bernard & Plaquemines parishes, as well as all of Orleans parish being without power, some parts for as long as 3 weeks. I saw video of some restaurants in the Quarter cooking free meals for people who desperately need feeding--one chef-owner explained that the food wouldn't keep much longer without working refrigeration. Amazing they still had the gas to cook it.

Weather turned cooler today (with a bit of drizzle early evening--just enough to keep me from grilling and force us to eat in the dining room rather than on the deck. Happy behaved and didn't try to eat off our plates, though he wouldn't get off the table). I pan-seared halibut and topped it with mango salsa from Whole Foods. Blistered shishito peppers, plus the last of our Cherokee Purple tomatoes over arugula. Got a lovely ear of local (IN) bicolor corn, so I de-silked, soaked and then nuked it in its husk. I ate the top 3" pointy part of the ear. It was stupendous. (First corn on the cob I've had in almost 2 years).

Great news, Carole, that your family made it through Ida safely and that your property “merely” requires a Paul Bunyan clean up.

Apparently, Ida is heading East now and in a day we are forecasted to get more drenching rains. Farther south of us the towns are being warned of possible tornados with the storms. Ugh!

Minus, I feel for you with the computer screw up. Hope you are able to sort it out, but totally lost files are panic inducing! Tia Maria sounds pretty calming though……:).

Special…so happy for you that you have such a nice trip planned to spend time with not one but two fave people! Stay home as much as you can beforehand since lord knows how rampantly that Delta variant will be taking advantage of its total license to spread granted by that narcissistic politician! I seriously worry for my good friends in South FL. On a happier note, your Rays are again looking so strong this season, even the Red Sox announcers were singing their praises tonight…for talent and character. The Sox are stinking up a storm of late and now riddled with Covid…can barely field a team beyond new “twelve yesr olds”. Sheesh! I’m feeling impatient for the NBA to start! Our ticket schedule arrived…so now, just patience.

Enjoyed marinated grilled chicken last night with my usual salad and a sauteed toss of balsamic laced veggies and orzo with some parm grated over it.

lacey - yay for the Rays! I felt so bad for them last year because both the Lightning and Bucs won their championships, I feel like it made the fact that the Rays made the World Series seem less than, but it was still a wonderful accomplishment. I am a Los Angeleno, so for me that WS had no loser, but the poor Rays already struggled with being able to fill their stadium long before Covid, them seem like they have been disrespected for years. I am crossing my fingers for another Tampa hat trick! I'm a little sad that we are not attending the Bucs games - DH and I both felt that with a full and unmasked stadium (relying on the honor system to mask - seriously?) every game is a super-spreader event. It is just too scary for me, and by default DH - he is afraid enough of bringing Covid home from work. He is masked 100% of the time and isolated in his office where he can close the door. His workplace is doing meetings by Zoom, even in the building so they are mitigating as best they can. I am going nowhere, grocery shopping about once monthly, and a couple of unavoidable doc appts. I am often not leaving the house for a week at a time lately because Florida's governor is a clown, quite willing to sacrifice residents for his political aspirations. I am determined not to be one of them. Fortunately, my BFF has been as cautious as I have, only really venturing out for outdoor activities with vaccinated folks - mostly our age or older - who are also careful. My son has never been into crowds, his fellow firefighters are vaxxed and they wear PPE at work. Other than that I think he spends all of his time outdoors as well with a select few compatriots. We plan to take a Yeti in the car full of food and snacks so that we are not dining in along the way, I am even bringing a slim-line Keurig with an adapter so I can make coffee in the car! This will be an interesting road trip for sure!

Dinner last night was a steak Caesar with kale, using leftover strip steak from the other night. Also using homemade croutons - I save the heels and weird end slices from loaves of bread, then cube, toss with olive oil plus S&P and some garlic powder, then bake at high temp until crispy. Not sure about dinner tonight, but I am thinking burgers on onion rolls and sweet potato fries. Funny story - I realized the other night we were out of our usual almond milk coffee creamer. I don't usually keep milk in the house but do keep shelf stable small cartons for the occasional need. Out of those too. So, DH offered to run out and grab the coffee creamer and I also told him to pick out a fruit to have with the breakfast he takes to work. I never investigated to see if he purchased anything else, because it didn't dawn on me that he would. I saw coffee creamer and bananas, thought oh good - all set. I had a major shopping planned for the next day - which he knew - but when I got home with bread, brioche burger buns, a honeydew melon, a container of granola - among many other things - I realized he bought a big loaf of bread, the aforementioned onion rolls, TWO honeydew melons, and a container of granola! I just laughed and told him he must INFORM me when he makes spontaneous shopping decisions, lol! We had a good laugh about it.

illimae - my mom served Cornish game hens now and then as I was growing up, usually for a fancy dinner. My BFF and I somehow came up with the alternate name Gamish corn hens, but I don't remember how that happened, lol! I am going to have to ask if she remembers.

Wow, Special! I didn't realize till now how well we have it here in Chicago. I grocery-shop once or even twice a week, because at least in our neck of the woods everyone obeys the mask mandate and the distancing floor markers in stores, and our ward is close to 90% vaccinated (75% fully--Gordy's is almost 90% fully-vaxed). Bob and I are now triple-vaxed. I feel fine with dining indoors at restaurants I trust, staying masked between courses. Masking has been second nature for us for well over a year. "A Tale of Two Governors," eh?

My sis in VA says they managed to escape most of the Wrath of Ida--lost power for a few minutes but no wind or flood damage. Our friend in Queens (near the Nassau County border) took the day off and therefore didn't get stuck at his office down in flooded lower Manhattan. His neighborhood is up a small rise and his house is up about 3 ft. from street level. My cousin in northern Westchester lives on a hilltop, so her house is ok too. But Gordy & Leslie are on pins & needles--they don't even know how much if any damage the French quarter venue for their April wedding sustained because there's still no power down there yet. (The Central Business District was the first to get power restored, but that's on the other side of Canal St). We and Leslie's parents have basically prepaid the photographer & florist, and put down a deposit on the venue. Haven't booked our hotels yet--good thing we haven't, as we don't know whether they'd be up & running by April.

We went out to Calo (our old neighborhood Italian restaurant since 6 yrs before Gordy was born) for a late dinner--they kept the kitchen open for us even though we arrived at closing time. (Was prepared to go home and cook some fish or grill burgers if we couldn't get in). We had tossed salads and linguine frutta di mare. Bob had my pasta and we shared the seafood: calamari, prawns, scallops, mussels & Manila clams in white wine broth. Dessert was at home: mixed berries & Greek yogurt with decaf espresso.

Last night was a version of salsa chicken that turned out delicious. I placed raw chicken thighs in a slow cooker, covered them with a small jar of Paul Newman salsa and cooked on high for about 3 hours. Transferred chicken and liquid to a skillet and reduced to a thick gravy. Side was cauliflower mash with gravy spooned on top. A second side was a salad with tomato, cucumber, avocado and blue cheese.

We have news from home that Cleco, our power company, is working along our street. Our neighbor, Rodney, who takes care of our yard during the summer has cleaned up the debris. It's great to have good neighbors.

chisandy - it would be nice if everyone in FL would mask and distance, but they would have to do it voluntarily since our governor and other elected officials have legislated against anyone, including schools, having a mask mandate. The two school districts that have instituted mask mandates have now had funds withheld - since the state does not pay school boards directly, it has instead held back the equivalent of those salaries. It is insane. I live in the 'burbs and people, for the most part, have been masking but not distancing. I try to shop at times of the day when the grocery store is uncrowded. For quite a while during 2020 I stocked up on pantry and freezer items (I also have a frozen food delivery) and shopped for produce at an open air fruit/veg stand not far from my house. I don't personally know anyone here who has had a booster yet, the vast majority of my friends are vaxxed and totally willing to get the booster, but the push here is still getting people vaxxed in the first place. I have seen no information for boosters unless you are a transplant patient, are HIV+, currently have cancer, or are on immuno-suppressant meds like steroid therapy beyond a specific dosing. Stats as of July had my county at 53% of residents with two injections. The rate has been stagnant and testing sites had gone away until the Delta numbers exploded here. I get City of Tampa text alerts and for a while there in Aug I was getting a text a day of new testing sites opening. Our ICU beds in my county have about 10% capacity available, and our Covid hospitalizations have increased ten fold from mid-summer. Bleh.

carole - yay for good neighbors!

Dinner tonight will involve mushrooms. That is as far as I have gotten, lol! Just looked at a recipe for a creamy chicken, mushroom and parm skillet dish - I have the ingredients, so that may be the ticket!

Hooray - I found some more Olathe corn. And there just happened to be a bone-in RibEye at the spectacular reduced price of $6.00 - so there's my linner.

Had my Prolia shot #11 today. I had to transfer to an endocrinologist this year since my GYN retired and none of the GYNs I called will do those shots anymore. He says the data coming out of the European tests for a one time RECLAST for a drug holiday are inconclusive so he wouldn't recommend. While he firmly believes that Prolia is safe for 10 years now (& he pretty much wrote the book), if my DEXA in December shows osteopenia (down from osteoperosis), he wants me to switch since I'm NED as far as cancer goes. His choice is the 'new & improved' Fosamax (once a week instead of once a day). I'm not clear if he's recommending a permanent change or a holiday, but we'll see in December.

Been discussing doughnuts with Serenity on another thread and boy do I want one now. It's been 8 or 9 months since I've had one.

Edited to add - Lacey, how's your back? Hope you've had some relief.

I haven't noticed any Olathe Corn being sold here in Phoenix...but the Hatch Chilies have been easy to find! :-)

  • chisandy
    chisandy Member Posts: 11,408

No Olathe corn here either, but the bicolor stuff grown in IN, MI, southern WI and the counties surrounding the Chicago suburbs is sweet & delicious.

Because it appears our fave BYOB French bistro never reopened, we walked to Cellars instead for the first night of their last hurrah weekend. Because they will be no more after Monday's brunch, I decided that I can cheat a little when we eat there so long as I stay low-carb at home. We shared a watermelon/mint/chevre salad as an app. I had the "lamb lollipops" (baby loin lamb chops) over wild mushroom risotto as my entree and Bob had the chicken piccata over mashed potatoes with green beans. Dinner tonight will be my two leftover chops--we will share a piece of mahi mahi I'll pan-sear (Bob will get the lion's share), and either broccolini, peppers or okra; Bob will get my leftover risotto too.

Polished off the leftover pizza from a place right not far from me. It had chicken, broccoli, slice tomatoes, cheese and cooked in a wood fired oven. The crust was thin but at least it was chewy!

Oh MOmmy - I am so hungry for pizza. I bought some small naan rounds & plan to make pizza later this week.

I went to a back yard 8am get together for joint neighborhood August birthdays. I don't normally eat at that hour - even if I am up & moving. The hostess had taken our orders for the Kolache Factory & brewed a pot of coffee. My selection was bacon & egg & cheese. YUck. That combination is usually great on a tortilla. This "pocket of dough" was not really edible, although I choked down 1/2 to be polite. I'll try the other half tomorrow with LOTS of salsa.

Linner was fried rice with pork & spinach and an ear of Olathe corn. I feel the need for chocolate and hear my Hagen Das calling from the freezer. Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend planned.
