So...whats for dinner?

Last Rad yesterday...everything fine, met with oncologist who let me know again what to expect with the burning...ouch! says it will peak in about 7 to 10 days....feeling pretty itchy & sore right now.
When I got home my 89 & 86 yr old neighbours presented me with a huge bouquet of flowers and all of my friends as Ladie's club toasted me with wine....how cool is that? Between that, and the support of all of my Facebook friends & co travellors on here you have made this journey much easier.
Laurie:
Tomato Soup Recipe:
4 cups chopped tomatoes
1 very large onion, saute' with 4 chop. garlic cloves in olive oil
2 cups chicken broth (or veggie)
2 tsps salt
2 tsps sugar
2 tbsp. balsamic vinegar (I used red)
pepper
3 tbsp. fresh basil, parlsy, little oregano (Dried is okay too)
Boil all gently for 20 mins.
Whisk in 2 tbsp flour roux to thicken.
I added about 1 cup of milk.
Puree with stick blender. Do not have to peel the tomatoes..blender pulverized them.
Recipe idea originally from Allrecipes with adaptions from this "Slapdash" Cook.
Yield 4 large bowls
Was delicious, even better the next day hot or cold.
I see no reason why this soup would not freeze, maybe leave out the milk for freezing & add later.

Moonflwr - hope you're celebrating big time!
Lacey - I think there is a discussion thread here on BCO about a connection between root canals and breast cancer. I never really checked it out, but here's a link:
http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/121/topic/786419?page=1#post_3034537
Isabelle - very sweet of your neighbors and the Ladies Club...flowers and wine, what more could a girl want
0 -
Isabelle- That is awesome! Its always nice to know how much everyone cares. Thanks so much for the recipe too. If I can get my hands on more tomatoes I am going to makes it next week.
Debbie- I am drooling over your lunch, super yum.
Carrie- I have also heard marijuana prevents metastatic BC.....so many studies....
Ds had soccer tonight so it is a bake and rise pizza and Caesar salad for dinner. Just got home a few minutes ago and have to get them to bed in an hour. This new routine of school and soccer is going to take some getting used to. It is so strange not to have 2 boys with me all the time.
Thanks to those who gave me great feedback on my Making Strides statement....it was kind of hard to put it all out there but felt I had to be honest whether I pissed people off or not

Well, thanks everyone for your love and concern. I am back at home, my daughter is on her way home to PA, DH went out to.get Chinese takeout for my birthday dinner. I am.on iv antibiotics for at least a week. I have a very painful drain. But, well, dang it, I AM HOME. that is a good thing. visiting nurse will be giving the antibiotics, unless insurance makes me do it after they train me. Maybe I can ne all thumbs? Or, maybe.I really I AM all thumbs, I mean I trip over my own feet. Really wanna trust me with a Sharp instrument? LOL much love to all

So glad you got home in time for birthday dinner moon :-) and hoping you dont have to do your own iv. I think all thumbs might be the way to go!

Isabelle, that recipe sounds so good. I would not add the roux though if you freeze. Just heat it up and then add a roux. Much love

Take out for dinner tonight. Spent most afternoon in the ER. Beyond tickled i wasn't admitted, we will see how the next few days go.
0 -
Happy birthday Moonflwr. Glad to hear you are home.
Eric0 -
So why did I not ask you first, Michelle?! You are my font of BC knowledge, and I should have asked you if there is a thread about the root canal connection. I think this
lady I spoke with will be there in a snap...not necessarily me! By the way, we are headed to LaMorra with some friends on Sat. Can't wait!
Moon, yay for getting out for a birthday dinner! Hope you will get some good nursing support for that drain. I would probably need an antiemetic and hypnosis to do it myself.
Good luck with your ins co.!
I am in veggie heaven tonight since DH went to a meeting that required his passing a farmer's market on the way home....he called me and I put in all sorts of orders, so we have the equivalent of what many of you ladies have grown and harvested, or
picked up at a local cooperative and I am hot to cook...thanks for the recipes!! Tomorrow will be tomato creativity in my kitchen...And our smoothies will be assured of really fresh veggies! Next summer I must really get back to my vegetable gardening.
Tonight we had (my garlic ginger soy sauce) marinated chicken thighs, caprese salad, and corn on the cob, and a really odd looking cuke that a NH neighbor gave us from his garden as we left. We felt adventurous eating it, since it resembled a gourd...was pretty tasty..a bit more peppery than a regular cuke.
Have a good evening all.....0 -
LOL, Lacey! Enjoy dinner at LaMorra, and don't forget to have a cappachino!
DH is gone until Monday so I made a ground beef patty, fresh corn, and some cut up cukes, carrots and red bell pepper. I was not that hungry, though, so I didn't finish a thing. Hmmm...if it happens again I'll have to consider "loss of appetite" as a side effect. That's OK, it will help me lose those pounds I added with Xeloda and make room for the pounds that are likely to show up after two weeks in CA and Hawaii!!!
Deb - beef stew sounds pretty yummy!
And oh, I must say...what an absolutely perfect day we had today, weatherwise. I don't know how it could have been nicer. I wandered to the outlet mall and picked up some good bargains. I think tomorrow will be spent getting together a bag of "never to be worn by me again" clothes for donation. I really need to stick with - one in, one out - and I'm a bit behind!
Kidsandlabs - I'm so glad that whatever drove you to the ER was not so bad that you had to stay!
Moonflwr - glad to see you got to be home for your birthday dinner!
Laurie - before you know it, they'll both be off to outside activities and you'll have 30 minutes to yourself
0 -
Yay Isabella!
Moon, George asked me to pass this on, as he does not have your email address
So he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, we don't care, do we??! Happy Birthday
Apple, what size pan do you put that overnight bread in? I want to make it for my daughter.
Can never catch up so Howdy everyone!
0 -
LOL, Thx everyone!

Laurie- I don't think you wrote anything that would of upset anyone, i thought it was beautifully written, and scr..ew em if they cant handle the truth. lol
Bedo- Love George clooney I didn't know he wasn't that smart but who cares he's gorgeous!
My dad starts his first chemo infusion tomorrow i hope it goes well for him so worried about him being anemic. when my sister and I were there we bought him all kinds of liquid vitamins and all kinds of stuff to help him through chemo, I guess going through it myself helped me to know what to get him. I have a question though, they didn't prescible the steriod dexamethason or the emend for him, I thought it was standard with chemo does anyone know?
Moon, glad you got to have a birthday dinner and when you feel better you can celebrate some more.
Lacey- Your ginger chicken sounds yummy!
Tonight my DH played golf so me and my DS went to the casino and I won 400.00 On a penny machine love it when that happens.

Lke Chabba suggested.. start you starter early. i mixed a couple tsp. of generic flour, a tsp of yearst, a tsp of sugar and a bit of salt with some water and let it sit all nite.. it smells like a good starter.. sour and yeasty. I added 2 tsps. whole wheat flour, a little corn meal, more water to it this morning. sometimes it works (much more often than not)
I feel a little guilty only participating in feel good threads sometimes. I have plenty of bad stuff going on.. chemo, chemo after chemo but am pretty ok. i just am not comfortable compliaining too much.. some people really have a tough rough life.
0 -
Bedo - generally make loaf size breads.. not in pans. like french baguettes. I've made it in a big round pan.. that was pretty cool.
0 -
Debbie Wahoo on the big win...treat yourself.
Apple We love you either way....so if you need to whine and complain we are here for you. Thats why I love this thread too...all good positive stuff and whats more positive than good food!
Laurie I had a dream last night that I met you. You were living in a small apartment attached to a nursing home, and you were like the caregiver and went around boosting everyones spirits that were sitting in geri chairs around the room. WTH? I have the most bizarre dreams.
0 -
Carrie - that dream sounds like I should have been in Laurie's place - you described my mom's place...it has small apartments for assisted living folks and is attached to the memory care unit, which is much more like a nursing home. And I was just there, we were all sitting around a big table and having a lively conversation during their "happy hour." When I left, everyone was happy, well, except my mom. That is a bizarre dream!
Apple - feel-good threads are good for our spirits, so don't feel bad. And I visit the stage IV forums enough to know that you're there quite a bit. You can vent here, though. We can take it and support you. So don't feel like we can't! What I do like about this thread is that we have over 9,700 posts and there has never, ever, been a disagreement or post that led to hurt feelings. At least I don't think so. That's pretty remarkable. Think about it, we'll hit 10,000 posts pretty soon! We'll have to celebrate when that happens!!!
Debbie - do you know what chemo your dad is taking? There are some that don't cause so many side effects. If he's on something "gentle" then he may not need the steroids or Emend. But for sure, if he does start to experience nausea, he should let his doc know so they can add whatever he needs to keep him feeling as well as possible. I hope that the chemo is gentle on his system and tough on the cancer!

Oh, I am so jealous. I hope your get together is fun!

Michele, yum! I want to go!
All this talk about burnt ends has made me crave bbq, so tonights dinner is huli huli ribs (huli huli is a marinade and sauce made with pineapple juice, garlic and lime, among other things), salted potatoes (my first!) and a vinegar and oil coleslaw.0 -
Sounds great, Michelle! Thanks for making our reservation. The foliage draw is a good one for that drive.....am going to find a better route than I did last time since going through Acton on Sat AM is nuts. Sorry to learn that your mom is still unsettled....is this just her new normal? Can they give or alter her meds to help her mood out at all?
Otherwise, hope you are enjoying your week!
Apple, think of this as your "balance" site if you find the other ones more heavy with issues. We can't survive well dealing with the heavy stuff ALL the time....so this thread can balance out the more painful themes...and life is still a mix...so enjoy being here w/o guilt. And of course the folks on this thread can hear whatever and support anyone going through more painful times...so that is also welcome. It says something that we are close to 10,000 posts. Wow, Laurie....you might want to try some business ideas!!
Debbie, positive energy to your dad as he starts his treatment...and to you as you support him.0 -
Oh,.I wanted to say I so enjoy this board in particular because of the honey feelings. Not that no one vents but that the care surrounding the venting make us feel at home. As does the gentle reminders to see a doc if we complain too frequently about something! LOL there are other boards that I am on, that are similar in feeling to this board. Then there are the ones that are so full of tension I don't bother with them. I try to only frequent those boards that are supportive to each other and treat each other with respect. Too much crap going on to enter into any of that stuff voluntarily. Ps, did I mention I love this board? LOL

Carrie- LOL on the dream that is funny!
Michelle- He is doing F-5 and either cytoxin or carplatin once a week for 6 weeks with rads. You could be right though and maybe they give him less doses so it is not as strong. I wish I had access to his dr so I could ask question I keep reminding my dad and his wife to get copy's of everything and they don't. Thanks!
Moon- Thats why I love this thread, In over a year I have been on the dinner thread there has been nothing but love and support here, no place for the "Meanies"

CaroleH and auntienance - can you recommend any real good cook books for authentic southern cooking. When I was in New Orleans I could've just eaten all day long as there were so many good foods to try. I would love to try real Louisiana/Missouri cooking at home. Sure it will never turn out as good, but I may get close.
Hugs to everyone out there who needs them - guess that would make us all. Who turns down a hug.

Debbie - have you tried calling your dad's doc and asking the questions? Does your dad have a health proxy that lists you? If not, you should have him ask the doctor for a HIPPA form, he can list you and your sister (and anyone else), then he signs it and the doctor will be able to discuss anything you ask.
Cytoxan and carboplatin are fairly aggressive chemos. Maybe he's getting a really low dose, maybe they are giving him IV Emend and/or steroids. Weekly doses should be a little more tolerable, but still... You should call. I think the 5-FU is a little more gentle, but I'm not 100% sure.

Michelle, I am impressed with your knowledge of so many things relating to bc and cancer in general.
Debbie, more positive and prayerful thoughts being sent to your father as he undergoes treatment. I do hope he doesn't suffer with the chemo. And congrats on winning at the penny slots! On most of those penny machines, there are so many betting lines that you can spend more than a quarter on each spin. For some reason, I prefer the slots with 7's. DH and I have switched to video poker machines. A few times each winter we drive over to Biloxi, MS, and play at a really nice casino, Beau Rivage. I suspect it was flooded during Isaac.
Apple, I hope you will feel free to voice down feelings as well as "up" feelings.
DH and I toured the WI state capitol bldg. in Madison yesterday. The tour guide was really good, and the building is gorgeous. It was built during a 10 year period beginning in 1907. It was a pleasure to walk around and stare up at the beautiful stained glass ceilings which were all designed to admit natural light. The variety of marble used in the construction was also awe-inspiring. Interestingly, we were allowed to sit in the leather chairs of the Senate chamber but were not allowed to sit in the chairs of the House chamber. The whole experience reminded me a little of walking around inside cathedrals in Spain and Portugal.
Today we drove to Milwaukee, or just outside the city, and are set up in an rv site at the State Fairgrounds rv park. It's raining and is cool enough that we turned on heat. Tonight's before dinner cocktail will probably be a cold weather drink--a bourbon old-fashioned. Dinner will be chili made with ground beef, 1 can of black beans and a can of pinto beans and canned tomatoes. I'm making do with what is in the freezer and the cupboards.
Tomorrow we'll take our bicycles to dh's niece's house, which is located, I believe, in a neighborhood that will make us a little nervous about parking our truck. The niece and her dh insist that the best way to see Milwaukee is by bicycle. So if I do not post again....
We're hoping Milwaukee is like Madison, which is very much a biking city. There were young people on bikes all over the downtown. On Saturday the plan is to take a boat tour of the lakefront, which should be fun for the niece's two children as well as for the adults. The weather forecast is great for the next two days. We have never spent time alone with Harmonie and her dh so this will be a good opportunity to get to know them better.
Thank you to the person (sorry, I forgot the name) who recommended going to the Art museum on the lakefront. I'll definitely do that.
Tazzy, one of the best recipe books for New Orleans food is Cooking Up a Storm or River Road Cookbook. There are many others, too. You can order both from Amazon, new or used. What are some of the cookbooks you use?
I'm very curious about your "statement," Laurie, but you probably don't want to explain on this thread which anyone on the internet can access.
0 -
Tazzy, to answer your question, my mom. I don't remember her ever hugging anyone, and for the last twenty(at least ) years of her life she had a cold. That was so she could say" don't come close I have a cold" LOL. Nowadays, they would probably diagnose it as an autism spectrum disorder. Funny thing is I had 7 siblings so she must have hugged at least 8 times! Roflmao! Sorry, warped sense of humor, or possibly pain pills......

Carole, I love Biloxi and Gulfport too especially Beau Rivage and Island View in Gulfport. Beau Rivage only had water in the garage, I think the casino and hotel were unscathed. At least they opened up within hours of the storm passing.
Tazzy, about cookbooks, wow -- so many to choose from. I used to be a cookbook collector, but have given that up for cooking magazines. My best recipes these days come from Cuisine at Home, Cook's Illustrated and Food and Wine. That being said, Southern Living Magazine puts out an annual cookbook that I used to get for a number of years. Lots of good things in there. As far as New Orleans style, Carole is right, there are many to choose from. All the NOLA celebrity chefs have cookbook as well as many others. However, for my money I've found that some of the best regional cookbooks are put out the the local Junior League. These recipes are usually tried and true, lots of times family recipes prepared by "real" folks. My niece who lives in Houston recently gave me theirs and I've loved and used it often. I know that the NOLA Junior league has published several and you can probably purchase online.
I'll take a hug anytime Bon Appetit!
