So...whats for dinner?

Tazzy, ditto on auntienance! Those cookbooks are the best and they probably have internet sites. Other options are local church groups they also have awesome ones, but you have to know someone who can tell you some churches.

Debbie, Michele is giving you good advice. My mom underwent chemo last year for liver cancer. I live in another state and and it was very difficult for me to get accurate information to know what was going on with it. She had a very hard time with it (she was not strong to begin with) and I so regret not getting a release so that I could talk directly to her doc (she didn't want me to). My parents were in their 80's and neither one had decent hearing, so it was hit and miss about whether she even knew what she was getting. Best wishes that your dad gets the best treatment with the fewest side effects.

Carole, if I could drive right now, I'd take you out to lunch! I am very proud of Milwaukee. Grew up there and live just north of the city. Biking is a good way to see the city, and there is a lot to see. You should enjoy the boat tour. Biking is not quite like Madison, but its getting there! Much love.

popping in really quick! I'll be back later
Dinner is spaghetti with meatballs and sweet sausage. I am using the left over sauce that I had made the other day. Right now I am SO hot with the temps we are having and cooking this dinner!
Carol- Your trip as always sounds like so much fun! My "statement" was for the making strides event- here is the link for anyone who wants to hear my 2 cents, lol!

Laurie, just read your "statement". Well said!

I think I'm going to have the rest of the ground beef from last night's dinner, plus I'm going to nuke some buttercup squash with chopped apples and cinnamon.
Laurie - the weather here is beautiful and I have the windows open. I'm sure if DH was here we'd be running the a/c. Today was a perfect day, weather-wise!
I used to collect those regional cookbooks done by church groups or junior leagues - the recipes were always good. Now I just look up recipes on the web. I have a few dishes where I refer back to my old Pillsbury Family Cookbook, circa 1968...lol. There's a great fried chicken recipe in there!

Thanks for the suggestions ladies - I'll be sure to check them out.

Hey all... Just doing a quick fly-by....
Laurie,
I was wondering what you were talking about since I couldn't find anything here that would have you worried.... Thanks for posting the link to your statement on the Making Strides site! Just read it and it was so beautifully worded that it had me crying.... Well said!
Picked a lot of tomatoes this afternoon and am trying a recipe similar to yours for sauce but, it's done in the crockpot. Sure could have used your little guy here to help with the squishing... lol.... Will let you know how it comes out.
Debbie,
Hope all went well today with your father's treatment.... As hard as it is for us to have to go through it, I think it is also very painful to have those we care about having to do the same. I pray that this treatment plan does it's thing and that the side-affects are minimal!
I do think that, if your Dad is willing, that getting a signed document where the doctors (each of them individually) can share information with you is a really good idea. I have one for both of my parents, my DH and each of my children. It is not permanent if they do not want it to be and can be terminated at anytime if they choose but, it makes things so much easier. Found that out the hard way when my children turned 18 and, while still covered under our health insurance, the insurance company would not share any information when I had a question on a bill because they did not have the permission to do so.
Michelle,
I wish that I lived closer and could join you all at Pickety Place. That menu sounds sooooo good! How are your treatments going?
Carole,
LaCrosse isn't far at all from Rochester, MN where I lived for 5 years!! Don't miss the winters there at all but, the biking and hiking trails they had were fantastic!!!!
Carrie,
That is really very good news for your sister! I know you are as relieved as she is!
Bedo,
Even though it was not meant for me, thanks for the pic of Geoge Clooney.... He is one fine looking man!!! Lol
Well, I guess this wasn't so quick at all...lol and I know I missed a ton of people but, please know I do thinnk of you all everyday....0 -
WOW, six of us. Menu sound delish, as Rachael Ray would say.

Manicotti and salad.

I had some rice leftover from last night's dinner, so tonight was "lazy sushi." Reheated the rice and salted it really well, then topped it in the bowl with cucumber that I'd cut into short sticks, and half an avocado, chopped. Done!
Along with it, I made a huge salad. Organic mixed baby greens and spinach with chopped mushroom, avocado, tomato, and red onion, plus two huge chunks of pickled beet and papaya poppyseed dressing. Yummm.

Took advantage of my vegetable windfall from DH's trip to the farmer's market and made gazpacho with my friend Vita Mix...then tonight made ratatouille, which I just sort of tasted (after having a bowl of gazpacho) while cooking...and felt so healthy....until I ended up balancing it off with some brie and crackers. Oh well...at
least it was after a long walk. Obviously DH was not here for dinner.....or it might have looked more like a meal.0 -
Michelle- I agree with Carole you are a wealth of information. I did mention to my dad when we were there if he could add us, he seemed a little hesitant but said he would. but he hasn't yet, I think he thinks us kids would yell at his dr. for taking so long to start his chemo. ha! I just got off the phone with him and he sounded good for a long day starting with rads then chemo and did tell me that they put those things you mentioned in his iv's so that is why he probably sounds good, thanks for your help and advice xoxo
Tazzy- Havn't seen you much on here lately hope you are doing good.
Carole- I love the 7's too but what i was playing was a unicorn machine and started out playing 30 cents per game then upped it to a dollar thats why I was winning. Sounds like you and your DH have so much fun together that is so neat.
Nancy(auntienance) Sorry about your mom going through that must of been so hard on you and of course her. It is especially hard when you live in another state fortunately I am only about 5 hours from him so that helps alot.
Laurie and Michelle your dinners both sound yummy. Spegghetti and squash sounds good, I have been eating patty pans all week from my dads garden they are such cute squash type vegetables that are lime green in color and shaped kind of like a flower i guess and taste similar to a yellow neck squash.
Seaside- I thought I saw you fly by when I was looking up lol! glad you did. Thanks for you advice too I am going to mention to my dad again tomorrow about it.
Carrie- I can't remember if I said this or not already so will say it again since Seaside reminded me, I am so glad for you sister too that things are better for her.
Tonights dinner was pork chops and broccoli in a brown butter, and parmesan cheese, For my vegetarian sister I made tofu in a hoison sauce and she loved it.
So many post tonight sorry for those I missed but hi and hugs to everyone.

what am i doing on the computer ? I need to be starting the sourdough bread. I find that it doesn't matter when or where the sourness develops.... time is it's friend. it smells pretty sour. It's 6.38 in Kansas and i have been up almost an hour.

Carole I love hearing of your travels. Would love to be biking throuh a town as a tourist...what fun. I get so lost when biking and always forget that I have to go back (so lessen is dont go too far)
Debbie i agree with Michelle, although you are far away from your Dad, it would be good to talk with the Drs just for your own peice of mind in knowing what is goin on. My Dad always says "I am ok" or "I dont need to go to the Dr" he is so stubborn when it comes to medical stuff.
That menu at pickity place sounds great...I would have to start backwards with that desert!
Saw some spaghetti squash at the farmers market yesterday, but didnt buy it....anyone know the best way to cook it?
Last night was grilled chicken, corn on the cob and tomatos and cucumbers in italian dsg. Really gonna miss all the fresh produce when its gone.

Carrie - I cut the spaghetti squash in half, lengthwise, scoop out the seeds then put it cut side down in a microwavable dish, add a bit of water, cover and nuke until it's tender. How long depends on the size of the squash. Once it's done, just scoop the strands out with a fork. And dessert first, that's a great idea!

Carrie, re: biking and the return trip, in addition to the distance, I'm always thinking about how all those fun downhills are going to be uphills on the way back lol

Hi All,
Thanks Debbie.... I am doing OK but haven't really cooked much lately... last 3 days we have eaten out and tonight DH is golfing so I will not cook for myself. I have been making the most of the last of summer, sunny days and trying to stay away from the computer for a bit. There will be time enough when the cooler weather comes for that .
As soon as I cook something that is interesting I will be sure to post.
Hi to all and sending positive vibes out to you xxxxxx

well - i started the sourdough loaves this morning... i added too much flour so i poured a stick of butter into the bowl of dough. We'll see how it turns out. it should be kind of whole wheatie.

Just a quick note. I've got sourdough starter warming up and I'll be starting it when Sharon & I get back from her port removal.
My brother flew in to Las Vegas from China yesterday for a business meeting and he flew here to see our mom. He has to leave this evening... So I don't know if we'll be able to get together.

Eric, I do hope you have a chance to see your brother, even if it is only long enough for a handshake or a hug. There comes a time when any lost opportunity to see or talk to a distant loved one is regretted.

Ditto on the microwave for sphaghetti squash... Once again, thanks Michelle! it's an easy fast process after which you can mix it with butter, cheese, tomato sauce , pesto... Whatever you fancy... And the mix-in is really the major source of calories. Dieter's delight!
Enjoying a gorgeous day at Crane's beach, Ipswich, MA. Super sun and great balmy breeze.
Apple, you are an intrepid bread maker! So cool....0 -
Carole - that was me, Gina, that mentioned the Milwaukee Art Museum. I wish I had known you were coming to Madison, especially downtown. I work on the square and have a great view of the capitol. The building is beautiful and I see something new everytime I walk through it. I'm glad you liked Madison; it definitely is a biking community. Don't forget to watch the UW Badgers tomorrow at 7pm CST! Camp Randall on a Badger Football Saturday is quite a sight to behold! Enjoy your WI tour. Gina

Trying to figure out what to send my DH out for tonight. He doesn't cook at all and I still can't stand up too long. Also not enough groceries bought. Much love to all

Friday = pizza night!
0 -
Pizza sounds good! Friday night is usually pizza night here too. I think it goes back to the days of meatless Fridays. Tonight my son cooked though, brown rice pasta with hot sausage in a sauce of tomatoes, onion, garlic and Parmesan cheese. I made some collard greens because we are overflowing with them from the CSA, and a salad and David's Cookies chocolate chip cake for dessert and some good wine we bought when we were in Napa. It was really good! My son is quite the cook, wish he lived closer, but he is going to school in Minneapolis. And he is leaving tomorrow. sigh.......
Debbie, hope your dad is tolerating chemo okay and hope it does the job. Michelle, you sound good, seems like you're doing well on the drugs. Hope it continues that way, and most importantly hope the scans and blood work are good. Apple, I know you are going thru some kind of tx, but you rarely say much about it. I do understand hanging out on the positive threads, but we all can support you whenever you want to vent. I hope you're feeling well too. Anyone I haven't mentioned, I am thinking of you as well. Have a wonderful weekend everyone.0 -
kidsand labs- LOL! We got pizza too! Planned on fajitas but friends stopped by and stayed late so we winged it.
Moonflower- Hope you got something good!
Debbie- YAY on winning big!!
Love all the bread talk, wish I had it in me to try it. Hope it turns out well Apple and Eric.
This afternoon the cat brought a live chipmunk in the house and then let it go. They had it cornered for awhile in the base board heater. Now it is MIA...yup.

Laurie, yikes! Alvin, MIA?!?! Not sure I could get to sleep with a furry visitor at large.
Good luck!
Had a great day at the beach, then had steamers and lobster at Woodman's Eat in the Rough in Essex. The clam chowder we started with was the best of all.....
Have a great weekend everyone.
Eric, hope you were able to connect with, your brother.0 -
Did I miss something? Some won the lottery, rub some of the luck on me I could use the dough.
Met up with some friends from HS and share PUPU platters and Fried Rice. Mia Tia was good also.

Debbie, I'm glad that your Dad seems to be doing well.
I had oral surgery today, so I gave my daughter all the poached salmon, asparagus, french bread and red potato salad and had chocolate milk and vicodin for dinner.
Vicodin is ?kind of? fun. It made me decide that it would be a good idea to go online and order lots of stuff. Kind of like the Ambien Walrus. I am afraid of the Ambien Walrus.
Hopefully I will feel more like myself tomorrow...
