So...whats for dinner?

Congratulations Moon and DH! Your special dinner sounds like it was wonderful!
Last nite we went to a newer farm to table retaurant in our town, with our next door neighbors. The neighbors had a three hour window for "parents' nite out" provided by the local Y who does activities with their kids for that amount of time....it's free for members.....amazing! Where was that program when our kids were young?!
Anyway, we started by sharing a not too unusual, but tasty calimari with two sauces, a lemon aioli and more typical red sauce. I had an arugula salad with winter squash and goat cheese...unique and filling. Entree was scallops with mushrooms and cauliflour. It was a nice dinner, finished with a shared lemon tart with berries.
Afterwards, DH and I arrived home just in time to settle in and watch our bearded Red Sox win the AL pennant. It was a good game and I am still amazed that they got past that strong Tigers team. But these Sox have heart and such team spirit...the city is excited....and needed this! Glad I am retired so I don't have to deal with being up too late for games, then dragging myself into work. And now I hardly sleep anyway....ha!
I am off to my volunteer training.....8:30AM on Sunday....... Lordy!!
Have a good day everyone!

Happy Anniversary Moon!
Lacey- I don't like a lot of seafood but for some reason love calamari!
We were out for dinner 2 nights in a row. Neither night was the food very impressive. The first night we went out with my father I had an excellent greek salad and a very average chicken parm. The next night I had pork schnitzel with a mushroom sauce- very dry. But the caesar salad before hand was wonderful. Maybe I should just order big salads?
Saturday was my brothers girlfriends 40yh b day and we had a surprise party for her that went off without a hitch! Loads of fun! Also, my brother proposed to her yesterday and I could not be happier. I adore her and her family.
Tonights dinner is a ham steak and cheese and rice with steamed pea pods. I am looking forward to it

Moon, happy anniversary! Your dinner out sounds wonderful. How sweet of your dh to plan it.
Susan, I'm sorry to hear that you're having a problem with your hands. But it seems you have some good alternatives to cooking everything from scratch.
We had a potluck noon dinner at my mother's house today that was so bad that I'm sitting here grinning and shaking my head. This morning my oldest brother called my mother to say that he was coming and bringing seafood gumbo and rice. He makes his gumbo with a canned gumbo base (Blue Runner, much advertised in this area) and fresh shrimp and hard crabs already cooked in a crabboil. The white rice was basmati. He also brought potato salad he'd purchased at Walmart. My middle brother brought a pot of yellow squash and a pot of zucchini, both overcooked. I had cooked a pork butt roast, sliced it and heated it in the gravy. There was also a bowl of really good peeled and sliced cucumber. I didn't bother to heat up my pot of made from scratch chili I cooked yesterday. My mother didn't bother to bake the sweet potatoes that were originally a part of our menu.
The important thing is that my mother, who will be 91 in Dec., loved all the company. And we didn't have a single political argument between the right wingers and the liberals. Today was a gorgeous day with highs in the 70's.
Tomorrow morning I plan to go to my PCP's office at 8 am for bloodwork and a flu shot.
Michelle, we love you and miss you.0 -
I really love rice of all kinds but for some reason I really dislike basmati.
Speaking of rice, tonight is Chinese takeout. I hurt my back trying to pull a giant waterlily out of the fish pond so no cooking for me tonight.

Here goes another attempt to post a picture.

Carole it worked. Pretty china!0 -
Good job with the picture Carole! Sounds like you had a good day at your mom's.

lovely china. My computer is being sick, so writing on an iPad. Dinner tonight was a braised then grilled lam riblets with Harissa. Oh... Very good. Should have braised a bit longer to render more of the fat. Just trying to work through lamb before more arrives.
This is too difficult! How do people do these on screen keyboards?
*susan*0 -
not as fast ad typing with all your fingers! LOL0 -
Thank you Laurie for the update on Michelle's health. Not what we wanted to see, but needed to know. I think of her often.
DH and I had an awesome meal last night. Started with a wedge salad with bits of crumbled bacon and tomato with a yummy blue cheese dressing. Next was a main course with a braised quarter chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, a nicely grilled portabella with sautéed spinach and melted cheese and a side of the yummiest braised petite carrots. DH also had a side of macaroni with fontina cheese. It had a nice golden crust on the top. So good! my tummy is still full from dinner last night!
I am also enjoying looking at the china patterns. So pretty!0 -
also much more prone to typos!

yes, such is the downside of ipads.....and mine seems to be getting less and less cooperative with responding to the letters I touch. Arggggghhh! I do love its portability tho.....
Draggin' after my training, food shopping, and dinner prep, so may head to bed very soon ......a record for me of late....but the next training session is again early AM.
Dinner was roasted chicken thighs, steamed broccoli and carrots, and a big garden salad. Pretty boring in my opinion, but about all I could muster tonight, and want to use the chicken bones for stock.
Laurie, so happy for your brother, his fiancee, and you!0 -
Now that I have a keyboard.... for the dinner we had the ribs, mashed potatoes with chives, roasted asparagus with Parmesan slivers, and a spinach salad with walnuts, cranberries, goat cheese, and pickled onions. And I made dessert! I never make dessert, but I had this olive oil that the rancher told me was perfect for a cake. They sent me a recipe, but it had chocolate which the boy and the husband don't care for. I became fixated that I wanted an almond, citris, olive oil cake and I found this one:
Wow was this terrific! Everyone loved it. Me? I would have preferred more lemon in the glaze. A moist cake with a lovely yellow color. Totally goes on the list of "favorite" desserts immediately. Oh, and did I mention easy to make?
Husband has some surgery this morning explaining why I am up at this hour. Time for me to be the person in the waiting room.

Happy Anniversary Moon..sounds like you had a great dinner.
Welcome Lexi I looove portabellas and don't have them enough. Like them as an alternative to a burger. Marinated and grilled with cheese on a slider..mmmm
Sat night was popcorn for dinner and last night was spaghetti and asparagus..nothing creative.
I have the hardest time with my simple phone that has a touch screen and my kindle fire..my fingers just cant generate any action and I have to touch everything three times...so frustrating. My DH says I don't have enough moisture in my skin? HUH? should I lick them first?0 -
Have you touch screen users tried swype?

Susan, haven't tried that but will definitely do so. Thanks for the link. I make a lot of pies because I'm better at it, but cake is my true love. And I'm a big fan of Serious Eats.
Tonight is braised lamb shanks, probably with tomatoes and white beans a la Julia Child. Tis the season for braising. Next up, osso bucco (if I can find veal shanks. Big if.)

susan - I remembered Giada di Laurentiis had a olive oil cake recipe - here is the link, and hers seems to have more citrus of different kinds, so might appeal to you.
moon - Happy Anniversary - 40 years is impressive, I am exactly a decade behind you - our 30th will be in Dec.
More pretty china - so fun!
laurie - congrats to your bro on the engagement! And bonus that you enjoy his soon-to-be bride. My brother's widow just got engaged and I have not heard a peep from her - on that subject or any other! My DD told me because she saw it on FB.
carole - I am so glad you get to see your mom regularly - I have lost both parents but my in-laws are hanging in there - they are 88 and 82, and doing well - it is nice.
auntie - sorry about your back! Take care and don't overdo it!
lexi - hello!
Everyone's food sounds terrific - it was a quiet food weekend here, DH was out of town for the weekend and DD was here but working or out on the boat, so didn't see much of her. I ran some errands Fri. night, but then didn't leave the house except to go walking. I saw this on my homepage this morning - after the critter discussion I couldn't resist!

Lexi, I think "awesome" is a good word to describe your meal! I love a good wedge salad.0 -
Tonight will be an unknown food night. I'm stuck in Vegas for the moment....for work.....
0 -
I thought they had a lot of good restaurants in Vegas Eric! But I suppose if you are there for work you dont have a lot of time to try any.
Lexi and Susan your food sounded so good too.
Laurie congrats to your brother.
Carole I am glad you get to enjoy your parents. My Dad passed 10 years ago, my Mom 20. My inlaws passed last year and early this year. Miss them all. My Dad when I see my clutter. My Mom when I clear the clutter. My MIL when I worry needlessly and my FIL when I am too stubborn for my own good. LOL
Susan and SpecialK, thanks for the link for the olive oil cakes. With all my family going clean, paleo or uber healthy I have to try to do better. But um when they are not here I get my sweet and sour FRIED chicken. So there! LOL
Auntie hope your back gets better. Its hard to cook when you cant stand up and move! I usually have to sit to prep my meals if it is more than salting the meat. LOL
If I forgot someone sorry. Much love to all.0 -
tonight is steak and green beans for us. For lunch some friends took me out for dim sum, so I'll probably pass on dinner. I'm fairly well stuffed up.

Change in menu tonight, now it's a spicy chicken dish, Chicken all' Arribiata with a creamy parmesan rosemary polenta. I don't know why, I just felt like chicken.

When I can't decide, chicken is my default. I'm on a phone "keyboard", so typing is slow and very error prone.....

It was quite spicy and very good. Dh is requesting that it be put on the "favorites" list.
