auntie - is he in the spout? How cute is that!

Sk, yeah that's where he spends the day. Occasionally if he's further down the spout where he's not easily seen, he gets poured into the bird bath.

I like the welcome frogs, that's cute with the two little heads popped up.

They are out every night, during the day they hide behind the sign!

  • Oh yikes on the critters but I guess it's all what you're used to!

Growing up in upstate NY we had Garter Snakes, crayfish if you were playing in the creek and some pretty ugly spiders (non-poisonous) to contend with but nothing really scary!

We also had toads, fireflies (that we used to spend hours catching) and Blue Jays all of which, along with the Garter Snakes, we haven't seen many/any of in recent years. I think mostly due to living in a neighborhood where many have lawn services ie: lots of chemicals that kill either the critters themselves or the food sources they need...

Not sure why but this year I have seen a couple of toads and a blue jay or two...

I was looking at Michelle's Facebook page a minute ago and her husband made a post that she is in hospice care at this point and does not have much time left. Thought I would share with all of you.

    Hugs to everyone.

OK Special, those little welcome frogs are adorable, but I am just not tough enough to handle the palmetto bugs! I never fuss about snakes and even wore a boa con around my neck once during a school reptile show, but not sure I'd like to be surprised by them in my garage, patio, yard, etc. I get huge reactions to spider bites, so not too crazy about them....and probably spend too much time hunting them down and "exterminating" them at the lake house. Except, of course, those adorable daddy long legs.

Moon, snow in Feb.....no problem....and much prettier than many of the creatures we have been hearing about! ;)

I went to a conference today driving an hour each way. Came home and collapsed on the couch, (stamina so low lately) so DH actually made dinner.....warmed up pomegranate marinaded grilled chicken breasts I'd purchased, made Michelle's microwaved corn on the cob, and made a cuke salad. It was a huge effort to get up and walk to the kitchen to eat....but no way I would negatively reinforce DH's rare cooking effort. The meal was all fine....I may use this strategy again!! 😉 Yay DH!

Nance, looking like the Cardinals will be in the World Series. If the Red Sox make it, maybe we can have a little Penzey's wager? 😉

Oh dear, not good news on Michelle, but as said, not unexpected. I hope she and her family are receiving good care and support.

Michelle wrote this almost exactly a year ago when her mom went to hospice:

"There's an elephant in the room with me... I can't help imagining myself in that bed with my DH and daughters keeping vigil over me.  As much as I try not to think about it, I can't escape the vision."

Wow, life is strange. I'm so proud of Michelle for, as she always said, living until she couldn't.

This makes me very sad...but...as I've said before, I don't want to give up because of the possibility of sadness.

This morning I cooked aebleskiver outside on the kerosene stove. The pan is made for gas cooking and the house is equipped with an electric stove. In the summer when I do this, I (carefully) use a Coleman white gas stove inside..and in the fall/winter/spring, I use a kerosene stove outside. The kerosene stove smells a little bit right after I light it and turn it off.....and a little bit of kerosene smell is too much...so it's used outside.

Now, and spring, is a beautiful time of year here. It's sunny, calm and 73F degrees. I'm glad Michelle got to experience the weather out here.

Oh, such sad news. I too hope she is comfortable are in loving care from her family. I also remember her saying those words. Who hasn't had those visions in our heads at one point or another through this journey? "There by the grace of God go I."

Chicken noodle soup today...for the soul.

Tonight's dinner is fettuccine alfredo with some broccoli thrown in for a vegetable, parmesan garlic knots and a peach clafoutis for dessert. (Thank you Susan, for that inspiration, as I'd only ever had cherry clafoutis before.) It's a carb fest in honor of my beloved Cardinals winning the National League pennant.

Lacey, If the Sox win, we'll talk ;-)

I had never heard of clafouti before. Just looked it up. That sounds truly delicious. I'm definitely going to make that some time!!!

  • Lacey, I've been hit by an unusual degree of tiredness lately. Recently I started taking the generic of synthroid for thyroid function and I'm wondering whether that's the problem. My dr. has always insisted that I not take the generic but I didn't notice the mistake until I'd already left the pharmacy so decided I'd just go ahead and take that batch of pills. I'm due for blood work so maybe I'll find out what's going on. My mother suggested I'm getting older and shouldn't expect to continue doing everything I'm used to doing!

This morning I did something really stupid. I checked my little pill organizer for night meds and saw that the Sat. section had pills in it. Arimidex and Lipitor. I thought to myself, I'll take them this morning. I had swallowed both pills before it dawned on me that today was Saturday and last night's pills were Friday. So I had arimidex and Lipitor last night and this morning.

Today I cooked a pot of chili for tomorrow's noon meal at my mother's house. First I cooked a lb. of Camellia dry pinto beans. We like our chili with beans.

Tonight's dinner will probably be a hot dog and an Abita root beer at the Abita Springs Opry. It's too early to have a meal before we go to the opry and too late to eat afterwards. Other foods available at the concession stand are chicken and sausage gumbo, potato salad, and home-made cupcakes, cookies, and cake.

Laurie, thank you for the sad update on Michelle. I hope she is not in pain. I'm very glad that I got to know her here on bc.org.

The news about Michelle is just crushing. I really, really, really hate this disease.

Food has been odd lately. My hands have deteriorated so that cooking is becoming more and more difficult. Husband has encouraged me to give myself a break, and for once, I am listening. Yesterday we went to a local Italian shop and bought a large Italian sandwich and 4 meatballs. [Yes, already prepared and cooked!] This "large" sandwich is so large, it is big enough to feed all those DPW workers in line. I got 1/3, husband got the rest. At 6:00 neither of us was particularly hungry so we ran an errand. Upon our return we choose to have a little tomato soup and a piece of toast. The meatballs with some pasta and sauce became our lunch today.

Dinner tonight will be a four bean soup with the chicken stock I just finished making. Since lunch was the big meal, I will serve up some small bowls. So happy to be in soup season again. Gosh do I love a good soup.

    Carole,

My endo is adamant that I MUST have the name brand Synthroid. Boy does that cost a lot, but I really can't imagine having my thyroid on a yo-yo again. I already don't feel that they are giving me enough of the stuff, I want every micro-gram to count!

My DH is taking me to Bacchus tonight to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Its supposed to be one of the best in Milwaukee. Its run by the Bartalota family. Real well known chefs. I once went to the Lakefront Bistro and it was amazing. Pricy but amazing. My DH planned it all himself which is the most amazing part of all. Ill let you all know what we get. Glad he told me ahead of time so I could dress up for it! LOL

So very sad to hear about Michelle, I saw on FB that she was on hospice now and may not be here much longer. My heart just hurts so bad for her and her family and friends. I pray her days are gentle on her. I also remember her talking about the elephant in the room when her mom was dying. Heart breaking!!

    Moon-Happy Anniversary.

    Susan- Happy belated Birthday.

Luvmygoats- Glad your OK after hitting a deer, how scarey!

I tried to read the last 5, 6 pages to try to catch up but so many post and new people it is hard to keep up, but felt like I was logging into the science channel Our good friends from Kentucky have a Condo in Florida and want us to meet them there, if fact we have been discussing it, I just put the skids on that idea no way am I going there now! Gives me the creepy crawlies just thinking about it now, if they want to see us they will have to come here. ha!

Carole- That's pretty scarey about you doubling up on your med's by mistake, I have done that too hope you didn't have any noticeable SE from it

Hugs to everyone your always on my mind

Debbie - Lol! Not all of Florida has that many critters - we just happen to live on a preserve, which is essentially like a jungle, so there you go!

Debbie: So glad to hear from you. If you're considering traveling, Chuck must be recovering well. We all think of you often. You should go ahead & make the trip to Florida. I don't suppose you'll be camping in the wilds of the Everglades. Really - it's not like all these bugs are crawling down the streets. Most places have regular pest control plans so you won't see them inside much either. The beaches are so beautiful, and the sunsets!

I had a wonderful time. The food was so good. I ate too much. Started off with curried squash soup with a touille of pecan. Oh so good. And pretty. Then I had a red leaf lettuce carmelized onion and beet vinnegrette salad. My husband had a ham and gouda salad with a lemon dressing. Both were outstanding. Entree I had was butter poached lobster (and yes it was the most expensive item on the menu but hey, I gave 40 years of my life to him!!!) With sweet potato puree and brussels sprouts leaves. Also yummy. My DH had walleye with mushrooms and potato with carmelized onions. He practicaly licked the plate.( who am I kidding? I almost did too! LOL) And no the servings size were not huge but not too small. They comped us a trio of sorbet with Happy anniversary written in chocolate on the plate. And we got an anniversary card. The serving was spot on and timed well. It was worth the money. I had to translate the menu to my DH LOL. Guess watching all the food network shows paid off. If I can load a pic of dessert I will. But a very wonderful meal and night. Much love to all.
