eric - sweet of you to take your mom, the Lt., to the cemetery to visit the Major.  That is what this day is about.

I am prepping the house, fridge, freezer, etc. for surgery on Wed. morning - first of the day - probably have to be there at 5 am.  Eeesh!  I have a new PS so am hopeful that this is the beginning of the end for reconstruction.  At least two more surgeries, but they will not be until end of this year and probably half way through 2016.

Special, your surgery saga is never ending. Since I will probably be very self-absorbed this week, please let me send you my best thoughts now. I really, really hope that this PS has the answers, and does a great job.

I second Susan's "best thoughts" for your surgery, SpecialK.

Your meal sounds so good, Nance, that I would even suffer through a baseball game on tv to be your guest!  I don't dislike the sport but you have to be a fan to maintain interest through inning after inning when nothing eventful happens.  Spoken by someone who watches golf on tv, for heaven's sake!  Talk about boring for the non-golfer.

DH expressed a yen for pasta for dinner so we'll have Smithfield's spaghetti with tomato sauce with Italian sausage.  I have a jar of Rao's marinara and will probably use it instead of making the sauce.  Yesterday I was given some home-grown cucumbers so we will have a romaine salad with cucumbers.  I like home-grown cucumbers almost as much as home-grown tomatoes.

Special - Boy time goes moves quickly. I wouldn't have believed it's your surgery week already. However I'm sure the same time has been dragging for you. Is it outpatient or will you stay over? Hope you like the new PS and everything goes well. We'll be in your pockets.

Blue Cheese Dressing (makes 3/4 cup, enough for 10 cups of greens)

    1. 2 1/2 oz blue cheese, crumbled, about 1/2 cup
    2. 3 tablespoons buttermilk
    3. 3 tablespoons sour cream
    4. 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
    5. 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar
    6. 1/4 teaspoon sugar
    7. 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

NOTE: be generous with the salt and pepper so the greens are tasty

Place all the items except the cheese into a jar. Cover and shake vigorously. Add cheese and shake again. Will keep for up to a week.

Here is a great equivalency chart that makes reducing recipes much easier!

p.s. I think I generally add a few chives as well, cause I love chives in any creamy dressing.

Thanks all!  I am not really nervous - other than the newness of the relationship with the PS.  This surgery will be in the hospital I used to work in, so they are all former co-workers and familiar faces.

minus - outpatient - of all the surgery I have had only the BMX was inpatient, and that was required by my insurance company - my BS does them outpatient.

Susan: Thanks for the recipe and the comprehensive conversion chart.

Still cooking things out of the freezer so I grilled a rib eye steak and a NY Strip w/bone in. I ate all around the fat on the one and the bone on the other. I have all of the "middles" saved for tomorrow.

Taking care of my friend. Thanks to whoever suggested the apron. Carol? She thought I was a genius when I bought groceries and picked one up for her at "Super Wal-Mart' today and brought them home to her. Thanks She is still using a walker after knee replacement

Just thinking of going to bed and cannot remember what anyone said earlier but had to ask this -

Minus - I hope you're safe there. Reading about the tremendous flooding going on in Houston right now. Prayers my friend.

And for Carole I hope you stay safe tomorrow as it seems to be headed your way.

Just a general prayer for anyone affected by this nasty storm.

Luv - I was worrying about you too. I just turned my computer back on after an 1-1/2 hours of tremendous thunder & lightening storms that seemed to be right on top of my house. I checked the rain gauge at 11:30 after about 2 hours of storm and it showed 5 inches & overflowing so I have no idea how many inches we really got in that short time. It's still raining steadily but not the total fire hose water we had for a couple of hours. No flooding in my house though parts of the yard are ankle deep, but it appears I have lost a huge, major trunk limb of my old pecan tree. I can't tell if the wind sheared it off at the trunk or if it was lightening. Luckily it fell on the front lawn not the house. It's over 40 ft long & 8-10" in diameter so I'll need to find someone w/a chain saw tomorrow. I'm way too wound up to sleep & thunder's still grumbling so I guess I'll try to read.

Also hoping for everyone's safety given the awful weather Texas folks have been enduring.

And squeezing into your pocket, with the rest, Special. Hope the new PS is a good match for your needs. Our DS1's best friend/colleague is a wonderful PS who does lots of reconstructive surgeries. I've been with him and one of the BSs with whom he works closely, at social events connected to DS1 and DDIL, and given their intelligence and warmth, I imagine what good care their patients must receive. It also doesn't hurt that the PS is one of the most strikingly handsome docs I have ever laid my eyes on.

We didn't have much lunch food here today, so I agreed to head out with DH to do a few errands and grab a quick lunch. Well, we ended up having a late lunch at an Irish style pub in town....split a BLT and a portobello mushroom sandwich that both came with fries (chips) and an onion soup. Several hours later, after a neighborhood walk, we were still not hungry for dinner. By 7:30, we decided to get some ice cream....and that was dinner! I think we should do that more often. ;)

    Nance, great Memorial Day offerings....

Carole, I totally "get" your inability to enjoy baseball games on TV. The "slowness" factor can be sleep inducing. I like baseball and grew up a huge fan, but can hardly stand the transition from basketball season to those nine inning games. By July, I'm fine with the slow pace. But right now DH and I are often quick to choose the NBA playoff games over the Red Sox these days. And when he watches golf, I can barely stay awake. Now that DGF also plays, I am outnumbered with happy golf tournament viewers. I missed out on that gene....

Eric, I admire your devotion to helping your mom get to the cemetary today......and helping Sharon manage her allergies. It is such a constant battle. Not being able to breathe well is pretty scary!

Susan, thanks for sharing that cool chart!!

Oh my! This all sounds so scary! Hope the sun comes up and you don't find too much damage.

Minus, happy to hear that you and Luv are ok. A bit worried about you both. My niece lives in Missouri City, thinking about her too. We often get dangerous storms at night which are scary. I hope you have no more damage.

    Eric, sweet picture.

SK, best of luck on your surgery. Hope all goes well and this surgeon makes everything right.

Carole, the only sport I watch (or care for) is Cardinal baseball. I don't watch any other teams and have no interest in the world series unless the Cardinals are in it. Fortunately, they usually are at least in the running. MLB had made some changes this year that are supposed to speed up the game, such as requiring the pitcher to pitch within a certain number of seconds and not allowing the batter to leave the box and wander around as so many do. I haven't noticed much enforcement so it still can be a pretty slow game. Not as slow as golf though lol!

    Susan, love that chart!

We have lots of leftover chicken (by plan) so it will star in tonight's dinner. That's as far as I know except for the two pieces of cherry pie my friend left for dessert. It's nice to have friends!

I've been thinking about both of you, Minus and Luv, and hoping that you're surviving the TX storms.  The systems always move east toward LA and we've been getting rain, rain, rain accompanied by some thunder and lightning.  Poor dh looks out and can see the grass growing!  It's tricky for him to find a time when it's dry enough to mow the lawn.

Bedo, it was Lacey whose dh used one of her aprons with pockets when he was on crutches.  I didn't need an apron when I was non-weight-bearing on my surgery foot because I had a walker with a seat and underneath the seat was a storage compartment.  To transport a cup of coffee, though, I had to use a travel cup.

Eric, what a lovely picture.  I think it's a keeper.  Your mom is so small and trim.

Last night's spaghetti and marinara with Italian sausage was delicious.  I found a Sal & Judy's (local brand) garlic marinara in the pantry and used it.  The fresh-grated cheese was asiago.  I'm thinking of making a spaghetti pie with the leftovers.  There's a restaurant in Holland, MI, whose featured dish is spaghetti pie and it's delicious.  I'm thinking you mix the leftovers with grated cheese and press it into a baking dish.

I make a delicious blue cheese vinaigrette.  Crumble blue cheese into a bowl with the olive oil and let it sit at room temperature.  Before dressing the salad, finish the vinaigrette with the vinegar and any other ingredients you include in your vinaigrette.  This technique was a Rachel Ray tip.

Consumer Reports has a survey on supermarkets that rates two of my supermarkets at the bottom:  Winn Dixie and Walmart's Superstore.  Fresh Market is rated high.  Its prices match the ratings!  We don't have any of the high-rated supermarkets like Publix.  The ratings came from consumer questionnaires.

Thanks for everyone's good wishes. The sun's out today - at least for awhile. A neighbor has a full size commercial tractor & he was able to grab the limb w/o driving on the lawn and pull it away to the vacant lot across the street. Luckily this week is 'heavy trash' pick up for yard waste.

Wow on the weather for the Texas folks!  Stay safe!

Thanks for all the well wishes - just got home fro my pre-op.  Feeling OK but not as prepared around the house as I usually am due to the distraction of DD moving back home.  Glad she's here but things are a bit chaotic.  I need to convince myself that everything doesn't have to be done.

lacey - funny you should mention the handsome PS - the one I was with for the previous 10 surgeries was the same - the nurses at the hospital thanked me for having him as my PS because they liked looking at him, lol!  I have now switched to a no nonsense, young, cute and tiny female PS - I am hoping that this surgery goes well and she has good words for me on the future ones.  Otherwise I will have to make a decision on having her remove the right side and go flat, or try a flap surgery.  Neither are appealing to me, so I am crossing my fingers.

eric - love the pic, so sweet.

DH brought green beans and yellow squash home from the supermarket this morning, so I changed the dinner menu.  We're having the green beans with boiled potatoes and oven-fried chicken breasts.  The woodworkers' guild is having their monthly meeting here in dh's shop so we'll be eating early about 5:30.

Disturbing health news about my mother.  My youngest sister took her to a cardiologist today as a followup to an Echo.  The main valve of her heart is not opening properly.  The malfunction has worsened since the last Echo in 2013.  There is no medicine for this, only surgical procedures and my mother is 92.

Carole, I'm sorry about your mom. Does her condition cause get discomfort? I hope they can do something for her.

I make pizza di spaghetti (spaghetti pie) from time to time. The recipe I use has eggs in it.

I like Publix very much. Unfortunately, I only get to frequent them when we're on the gulf coast.

All this talk about blue cheese dressing means I'm going to have to make a salad!

Carole - so sorry to hear about your Mother. Will this restrict her activities? I've been thinking about you today anyway since I assume our weather went your way. Hope all is OK.

DInner was modified Salsa Chicken. I had rotisserie chicken that I'd frozen so used some of that (a breast & a thigh) w/3/4 cup of salsa and one can of black beans. Yummy - but it will still be be 2 more meals. And now I have both 1/2 a jar of Rao's sauce and 3/4 of a jar of green chili salsa in the fridge. Wonder how green chili stew would freeze?

lacey - I agree about big lunches. I've been trying to eat my "main" meal before 3pm. I sure sleep better.

Pretty standard dinner here in the 02143 household. We grilled some lamb chops and some local asparagus, made some fingerling potatoes with garlic and butter, and a salad with local lettuce, carrots and tomatoes, with just a light sprinkling of feta cheese on top. Excellent meal!

Carole, I am so sorry to hear about your mother. 92 does seem older than ideal for such a serious surgery. What is the doctor suggesting for her?

Lacey, was your weekend a blast at the NH house?

The MRI tech beat me up today, blowing out my good vein. She then became miffed when I asked for someone else to try for the THIRD time. She was so darn faux cheerful, I considered smacking her across the face, but then remembered that she would be controlling the machine. :-) Results on Thursday.

Susan - I HATE techs that can't find the vein. That's one of the main reasons I've stubbornly kept my port. Crossed fingers for the MRI results.

Susan, the "standard" meal in your house sounds delicious.  A "blown" vein sounds awful.  Sure wish your mets would have decided to disappear on its own.

My mother made it clear to the cardiologist that she is not open to undergoing surgery at her age.  She is presently enjoying her life and will let nature take its course insofar as the heart valve is concerned.  All six of her children want her to live forever with quality of life but that's not in the books for any of us.  Her father lived to the age of 95.  Thanks for the expressions of concern.

My oven-fried chicken was cooked a few minutes too long and was dry, but the fresh green beans with potatoes were quite good.  DH ate two large servings and finished them up.  I think I have more success with lightly breading and pan frying chicken breasts.  I'll have to devise a simple sauce, maybe yogurt and mustard.  Or just buy chicken thighs.

When I had my colonoscopy the nurse stuck me three times without finding a good vein. The anesthesiologist finally got it in. I think she felt sorry for both of us. Those suckers feel like nails going in under the best of circumstances. I had a lovely bruise.

Best wishes and fingers crossed here too for your MRI Susan.

Thankful the Texas ladies are safe, albeit with some damage to tree's etc.  We got an inch this morning in about an hour and more off and on all day.

it is predicted daily thru Sat.

Fixed Shake and Bake Spicy chicken breasts, baby white turnips and baby yellow potatoes, carrots along with sliced tomatoes for Memorial Day.  The turnips was from our Farmer's Market and they were really good.   Had the first watermelon of the season.  My dear old dad said "everything looks nice, everything tastes nice, but the watermelon tastes as close to perfect as possible".  It was a good one......

He took home leftovers and I thought he'd eat them tonight but when I stopped by at 1:00 pm he was eating them for his lunch...  We have a raccoon in our neighborhood that is the size of a beagle, I kid you not.  He is gorgeous but I don't want him in my garden..... Not very afraid of people either.....

Carole, I am with your MOM.  My 88 year old aunt made the same decision a year ago.  Scares me that she lives alone and 5 hours away, but she didn't want the hassle of recovery and restrictions.  Her cardiologist told her afterwards that he was relieved with her decision.

HUGS to all having procedures and waiting for results.

    Stay safe everyone.

Oh Carole, I'm sorry to learn about that diagnosis for your mother. I do hope that you can meet with your siblings soon to determine how you will all proceed for her best quality of life. Your mom is fortnate to have so many children nearby, and to have a good support system as she faces this. Would you consider seeking a second opinion to be sure that there are not other options for her? I don't know your mother's heath status, but surgery at 92 sounds pretty risky. Hugs to you and your family....

Keeping all the folks experiencing those awful floods in my thoughts, and hoping that the sun comes out and stays around for a long time. Crazy weather patterns be damned!

We are home...just when the weather has really turned summery.

    Leftover grilled chicken from NH for dinner with a big Greek salad, and some french bread I found in the fridge (glad I left it there or it would be green!). DH was pleasantly surprised that we had an actual meal since he knew how empty the fridge was. Ha! Now tomorrow will be a different story unless I get to the store...or send him. ;
