Myra, good luck with port placement. My throat was so sore ( not inside but achy from the muscles being stretched) last night that all I had for dinner was a sweet potato and pear soup ( all pureed) because chewing was agonizing. Today feels much better.Smile

Susan and Lacey all I can say is "great minds think alike" Sounds like a great day out

Turkey sausage, pkg of zatarains jambalya rice, onions and green peppers sautéed and a can of diced tomatoes with green chilis for a quick jambalya dinner.

Major wind and rain here last night into this morning...I swear if we don't get some snow, we will have to mow the lawn. I am seeing some green things poking up in the flower beds...NOT good.

Cold and blustery today, not much fun to be in, but TJs was fun anyway. I saw those pot pie ravs Lacey. I wasn't sure how to serve them so passed. I was more intrigued by the chicken soup dumplings but ended up passing on them too, although I now wish I hadn't. I mostly ended up with frozen things, fish, chicken burritos, pizza crust, baby peas. Also got Belgian chocolate, flowers, some triple cream brie and mango tea. Before my doc visit, I went to The Wine and Cheese Place, which imho, is the best store of it's kind in the area. I got some of my new favorite cheese, D'affinois Fromager (better than the best brie you ever had, at least in this country lol.) Also, my second favorite, morbier, which I have a difficult time finding in the area. All in all, a good day.

Dinner tonight was fairly mundane, sloppy joes (DH request of course) and a caesar salad. I had mostly salad. The sloppy joes were made less mundane by brioche buns that I made.

My dad may get released from the hospital tomorrow. If so, we'll go get him settled back home. Wish me luck :-)

  • Kiks, thanks. Yep, I'm sore but it's not as bad as I thought. Did you take some Tylenol? It definitely helps. Not much appetite either...couple slices of olive bread toast and tea. Maybe I will lose some more weight

Good luck with your Dad, Nance!

Susan and Lacey, i am so jealous. and of the meal too! LOL

    Minus, safe and fun travels.

Carberry, Zara runs is pretty decent as a box mix.

    Kiks glad your feeling better.

Myra good luck on your port placement.

Carole I found out how to cancel my see dealer light when it appears. LOL. But my car is over 13 years old. And we no longer take it in for maintenance. It just goes in for broken things. LOL

I guess we Dodged a big storm. We just had some sleet and rain. North of us they got a regular storm with 6 inches or so but no big monster storm. Works for me!

Tonight was the rest of the stirfry. So tomorrow probably the ground turkey something.

    Much love

Bedo, I am not sure you should use a pressure cooker! I think you are right to be afearing! But, I love my modern pressure cooker, and use it or beans regularly. Your mussels and squid don't really need a pressure cooker after all.

ChiSandy, I am a bit concerned that you are eating grapefruit while taking Femara. They are contraindicated according to the insert. So many drugs are not compatible with grapefruit.

Carberry, I love that you have rejoined us! So great to hear about your life once again.

Red and Nance, your travails with your fathers is just heartbreaking. I can't imagine being woken at 3am. Well, at 3AM, I wouldn't even hear the phone! But Mr. SMT would. He is not a heavy sleeper. Somehow your descriptions of finally getting sleep since you knew your Dads were being cared for 24/7 resonated with me. It really defines the issues with aging as it affects the family.

hsant, eggs will be your friend during chemo. I kept hard boiled eggs in the fridge, ready to peel for my protein snacks. But, you can cook up some eggs nestled in some salsa, a tomato sauce, or whatever you crave. And it is all about cravings!

I have never had a port and I have the veins to prove it. It has been so interesting to hear your reports post-insertion.

Moon, you are welcome to join us in Boston anytime! Lacey and I would take you for seafood, Indian, Mexican, Turkish, Chinese... whatever cuisine you desire. Just say the word.

Tomorrow is my oncologist meeting. I am on the three-week plan now. [how much does that suck?] I really want to see my tumor markers. I have not had them drawn since I start my new chemo drug. Since my appointment isn't until 4pm, we are planning to head to an Irish pub for dinner. Tonight we had 5 leftover ribs, the leftover potato salad, and a freshly made cole slaw.

Lacey and I really did have a marvelous time together. I am so glad that our pleasure gave others the same.

I lost a long post (my fault--hit something to highlight the entire text and when I hit the next key....poof) . And, I'm tired.....I did the 8 to 5 shift two days in a row and it got to me.....8 to 5 as in 8am to 5am.

When my mom's caretaker's phone number shows up on the caller ID, I always answer with a bit of "heart up in throat" feeling.

Kiks and Myraknits, I'm glad the port placement went well. Sharon liked having her port and I don't think the "installation or removal" bothered her much at all. She said normally the blood draws from her arm stung, but getting one from the port was "never felt it".

Susan, hoping for good news tomorrow. Lacey's food write up was magazine worthy. :-)

Stay warm, safe and dry everyone. I'm on call this month and I'd just as soon not get activated....I don't like being cold!

  • Pork chops, left over baked sweet potatoes (split and browned in butter), and cabbage slaw with vinegar and mayo dressing.

A brisk wind and low humidity made our 50's high today feel colder. But the sun added cheer.

Last night's casual dinner out before the basketball game was fine, if unremarkable. We shared calamari and I had salmon with roasted broccoli. DH had a crabcake sandwich with side of asparagus and a house salad.

Tonight we are having cabbage soup and shrimp cocktail with some shrimp I thawed out overnight....waiting to be boiled up right now. I'll put the shrimp over a big mound of lettuce and make a horseradish sauce for "dressing". I'm mostly making that for DH. I really need to purge with the cabbage soup! Too much eating out....and I get weighed at the MO tomorrow. :/

By the way, the write up about Susan's and my lunch was magazine worthy, which is why I asked Susan to write it!!

So much for our mild weather....we are expecting a major drop in temp and up to 8 inches of snow tomorrow. Ugh! It was like spring today. I certainly hope that your services are not needed anywhere, either, Eric. :)

Tumor markers are down 18%!!!!! This is pretty big drop for two cycles of a drug. Dr. Christina and I are both very delighted to say the least. Last month I agreed to a trial where they might draw a "little extra blood." I had, I kid you not, 10 vials pulled today. He then bound up that little bit of gauze as though I had just lost a limb, we were trying to save the appendage and get to triage. As a result, my blood pressure was off the charts. Anyhow, good meeting with Dr. Christina. I will, reluctantly, start Xgeva next month for my bones, but we will modify the protocol to every 9 weeks instead of every 4. This should reduce my chance of ONJ by a bit.

Dinner tonight is a celebration, and tonight that means Chinese. I would get a cocktail too, but they don't have a license, so just regular Chinese tea for me.

Very, very pleased. I can tolerate this drug if it is actually going to work!

susan - let me be the first to say YAY!!!  So happy that the tumor markers are moving in the right direction!

SILs are heading this way tonight - their flight is currently delayed -- most likely due to stormage (not a real word!) here and there, which is NC.  They should be here by 9-ish, as long as there are no further delays.  I put a rump roast in the crockpot with French onion soup, beef broth, and a beer.  We will have French dip sammies on Cuban bread, and Asian slaw (how is that for a multi-cultural meal?) Tomorrow I am making eggs in marinara on rosemary toast with home fries and fruit.  We will prob have lunch out (I am hoping for Greek down at Tarpon Springs), and then have a big cobb salad and sesame noodles Fri night, with an app of artichoke heart spread and rye crackers.  Sat am DH and the SILs are running a race so breakfast is ham and cheese on English muffins and coffee to go, lunch on the way back, hopefully on the water, then steaks and bacon wrapped shrimp on the grill, stuffed zucchini and brown rice with scallions, pineapple and cashews.  Jalapeno popper filled filo cups for an app.  I think we will brunch out and then go to the airport on Sunday.  I just got home from the grocery store - and per usual - unloaded all those groceries in the pouring rain, lol!

Kiks I'm not sure about food with chemo, as I never had chemo for breast cancer. I was on another drug for a long time that caused weight loss and made everything taste like lemons, metal lemons. I tried plastic spoons and finally gave up and chugged vanilla ensure to get it over with and keep up my weight. I am one of the worst cooks here, Help peeps!

I'm so glad Susan and Lacey met!

Tired, Going to end here for now.

Peas for dinner. Lovely frozen baby peas. I would go with my favorite, Lesure (SP) canned peas, but I stopped buying them due to the salt.

For dinner last night lalalla and lala and then more la la with plum sauce that my friend ordered for dinner at an Asian/ Ethiopian restaurant and I completely let her take over the ordering. It was good. IDK what it was. Sorry When I go back I will write it down

Lucky guests, Special. As usual, you have the menu under control in the loveliest of varied ways. I hope that you get to fully enjoy the visit as well as provide so much enjoyment for your SILs!

Susan, that's wonderful! I am so pleased that your devotion to this not very pleasant meds regimen is paying off. Maybe you should break out the champagne at home after your Chinese dinner! Cheers!!

    Awesome news Susan! Hooray!

Jambalaya tonight (using some leftover rice) with chicken, andouille and shrimp, which will be added to my portion only due to DH's aversion to bi-valves, mollusks and crustaceans. I may add a salad but we'll also have some garlic bread.

I think dad may be headed to rehab for two weeks (if he doesn't change his mind first). Fingers crossed!

Susan. Yay on those results! Cracking up at the blood draw story though you prob didn't need any bandage since they drained you of every drop of blood you had

Special I am impressed with that meal planning I am doing a football party Sunday and will do pulled pork sliders a taco dip and then depend on all my friends for the other munchies foods. And mini bite sized brownies with either orange or blue frosting

  • Incredibly good news, Susan! I'm so happy those tumor markers are behaving. I have to admit to being a bit nervous.

SpecialK, you are my heroine in the kitchen! You are such a marvelous menu planner in addition to being skilled at the preparation stage. My favorite way to entertain guests is to go out to dinner with them!

Dh's brother arrives tomorrow afternoon. The plan is for dh to cook chicken and sausage gumbo tomorrow morning. He suggested that menu and offered to make the gumbo. He even did the grocery shopping today. We'll have a salad, maybe Caesar and garlic bread made with some French bread to be purchased tomorrow. If he knew about SpecialK's food plans, BIL would definitely go there instead of here. Appetizer will be cheese and crackers with some pepper jelly. Ta-DA! And a vodka martini with Smirnoff, not Grey Goose. I finished up the Grey Goose, which is so-o-o pricey.

I guess I should think about snacks for Super Bowl on Sunday.

Yay for rehab for Nance's dad. And Red's dad.

Not eating or drinking actual grapefruit or grapefruit juice--just grapefruit flavored white balsamic vinegar (made from white grape, not grapefruit juice). Fear not!

Last night I wore the gauntlet all day. Defrosted some paiche filets from WF(farmed in Ecuador, sort of like a cross between cod & halibut) and brushed on some sugar-and-salt-free Mediterranean herb/lemon/olive oil marinade. Then sprinkled them with a little Sicilian orange sea salt and pan-seared them. Also blanched some broccolini and then sauteed it in olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, red pepper flakes and a dash of kosher salt. Drank lime seltzer with it. Unfortunately, got herb marinade on the gauntlet’s thumb & palm. Ick.

Today was a “good LE day.” Therapist declared my measurement have gone down a little since 3 wks ago. So I’m not wearing compression today. She also said my breast fibrosis is softening considerably. And I broke the 5000-step mark on my FitBit (hey, it’s a start). The new Mediven sleeve arrived, and my therapist confirms the top band is still too narrow and the sleeve itself 3” too long. So I returned it, too, and got a duplicate Juzo--with a Juzo glove that is flexier in the fingers than the Mediven (and its fingers are a tad shorter). So I can now wear a glove to play guitar--and not have to find a pediatric glove or get a custom sleeve!

Saw the MO--she’s delighted that I’m down 1 lb. since starting letrozole--she says if I stay the same weight all year it’s a victory. She also says that I should get Reclast instead of Prolia because Reclast is covered by Part D as a Tier 4 whereas Prolia is a Tier 5 or not even covered--and she says ongoing trials are showing Reclast more effective in preventing recurrence than Prolia. (My PCP is against Reclast, saying he’s seen horizontal thigh fractures with it). I see my DDS next week--he knows my jawbone better than anyone else, so it’ll be his call. I don’t need to decide till August. No med-MJ card--she doesn’t think it does anything for patients not having chemo anorexia or stage IV bone pain, and the smokable form of weed (mostly THC) can be estrogenic. No pure CBD oil in Chi-area dispensaries yet.

No idea what to make tonight--could do a choucroute garnie, but since the wine we ordered last Thurs. is in, I might drive to B’way Cellars instead and have some soup and tuna tartare (or an ahi Niçoise, hold the spuds). It’s up to Gordy--he’s home tonight after working the lights & sound at pH Comedy Collective for the kids’ standup open mic.

    Happy for you Susan!

Glad you LE is better Chi.

Had to use the ground turkey so sloppy joes on flatbread. Not to bad.

    To all much live.

Opted for the choucroute--path of least resistance. Kinda weird to have it w/o riesling or beer, but LaCroix cherry-lime seltzer was pretty darn yummy! (Had been hoping to find some Buffalo wings in the freezer--have a mani-pedi tomorrow and was not worried about turning my tips & cuticles orange tonight).

  • Dh's brother arrived today. He lives near Chicago. In honor of his visit, I made three dips today. A sour cream and ranch dressing powder mixture, hummus, and grated cheddar cheese with diced roasted red pepper and mayo. Using leftover home-made tortillas, I made some tortilla chips but they are not wonderful. They're rather hard and probably not salty enough for most people. I have a bag of Frito dippers that are definitely salty enough. And also some good whole grain crackers. So we'll have snacks at cocktail time.

The chicken gumbo is made. I cut up the chicken and removed most of the skin and dh did the rest. All that remains is to cook brown rice and make a salad. And slice up a bought French baguette.

Today is a cool, sunny, lovely day, high in the 50's. BIL came from FL where he visited other family members. He enjoyed some 80 temperatures there. Too warm for me.

Chi, do you cook your choucroute with Riesling? Great minds think alike. This is on the menu for tomorrow night after going to see my dad.

Chicken cacciatore with fresh pasta tonight. Was supposed to be last week, but we opted for something else at the last minute.

Today was busy. Meeting with the tile guy, reviewing the new window placement [looks great!], electrician review [several errors], and shoveling. Two houses of shoveling. And that doesn't even include all the billable hours I snuck in. Lunch was our Chinese leftovers. For dinner, I made a leek and potato soup which I served with some sautéed sausage chunks in the soup. This soup grew! I started with 2 qts of last week's stock, and somehow the results are 6 servings. Now, I know we are eating less, but this is a bit "loaves and fishes." I know what we will have for lunch tomorrow.

I have lost track... are both of our Kitchen Table dads in rehab now or are you still waiting for those early morning phone calls? If they are in rehab, I hope that you are enjoying your full nights of sleep.

Lots of snow in our part of Rhode Island.

.Thank you Stouffers Mac and cheese family size and Campbell's soup. Kale will round out the meals

We have very wet snow with huge flakes. The trees are so beautiful. They took my breath away driving home. They are covered with heavy snow and in the evening light looked like a winter wonderland. Sorry about the cliche but they did. Some people have turned on their blue or white Christmas lights over the bare limbs, with the snow on them, which make me just appreciate the beauty of the snow storm so much more, even though there's snow! .

    Drive carefully everyone up here.

Dang fireplace broke, but I have 2 excellent books to read.

Auntie I used to make chicken cacciatore for my second husband, He really liked it, can't remember where I got the recipe, but I think any recipe would be good. I made it with inexpensive chicken drumsticks or thighs

Nancy, I usually make my choucroute with riesling and juniper berries--and start it out by sauteeing diced bacon. Since I’m watching both booze & calories now, I simply rinsed & drained the remainder of the raw sauerkraut & caraway seeds that was in the jar, put a veal bratwurst and a kosher hot dog on top and let it cook on “low” for 20 min. Cracked open a fresh jar of Dijon (Maille)--amazing how much zestier it tastes when it’s fresh. Used to drink Alsatian riesling, cremant d’Alsace or a pilsner with it. Seltzer this time.

Going out to dinner with Bob tonight--need to pick up the wines we ordered at B’way Cellars’ winemaker dinner last week (forgot that if I’d gone Tues. night the winemaker would’ve autographed the labels), so we’re driving instead of walking. Not sure what I’ll have--probably the strip steak chimichurri, or pork shank mole if it’s on the menu, unless there’s a killer fish or poultry special. If the entree is fish, I’ll stick to a glass of cava; otherwise, start with seltzer and pick a red that looks good. They offer almost as many wines by the glass as by the bottle. Not gonna have a salad--just polished off the last of the Israeli salad from Whole Foods.
