auntie - the whole thing was weird, right? I was seated on the second bench behind my MIL and DH and his sibs for the flag folding but both SILs commented that all of those folding were shaking, so I know they were rattled. It was just an unfortunate series of events, surrounding what had been a really touching and moving day - up to that point.

On a completely different topic - I am asking for a programmable crock pot for Christmas - anyone want to weigh in on their fave if they have one?

Well, it wouldn’t be a Chicago Bar Show run without at least one “snow event,” and Mother Nature didn’t disappoint on closing day. As I was getting ready to head across from the hotel to the theater to get ready for today’s matinee, we were watching the Bears & 49ers slog through the aforementioned “hamster flakes.” Niners didn’t know what hit ‘em, and one of the Bears star running backs had never played in snow before! Despite the weather, we had a full and enthusiastic house. Bob whiled away the afternoon at Kitty O’Shea’s in the hotel, having trout and Guinness. I was very worried after last night’s cast party because I thought I chatted too much in a very noisy room and was getting laryngitis again. I also had forgotten to take my cough-suppressant before leaving home, and wanted to save my doses for the show—so I took the bedtime dose 90 min. before curtain and realized I was going to have to sleep without it after the first dose wore off. So there was a bit of coughing during the night so that I could have the next dose be effective for at least 6-8 hrs. to get me through the show.

Now, the first night, I thought I was a disaster. I couldn’t hear my voice on the low notes, so I assumed it was weak and I pushed or else I couldn’t be heard. It felt very “gravelly.” But the director told me she watched the video, and I sounded fine. Hmm. Gordy (my son) also said I came through loud & clear. Nonetheless, the sound guy gave me some more volume on the lowest & highest notes the next two performances, so I assumed I was passable. Bob and our friends who came Friday said I sounded great, but I felt I still wasn’t “there” yet. This was perplexing to me, because I sounded great in the dressing room practicing and in the green room during warmups—as well as during the full-ensemble choral numbers. And my spoken lines were at the just right volume all along. I was so frustrated, and almost jealous that the other soloists could sing so clearly yet effortlessly. So today, we began the song, with me starting—and I came through loud and clear without pushing myself, so I was able to fully act without my voice cracking. But suddenly I heard everyone else perfectly too, and we nailed our solos, unison and harmonies. What was the difference? Well, today they finally got the stage monitors working! They hadn’t been on the first three nights! Our mics were those tiny (about the size of a grain of rice) little wireless ones taped to our cheekbones, so you can’t get the kind of instant mini-monitoring you can from a conventional stand or handheld mic.

We were supposed to meet for fish & chips, Kaliber, and Irish coffee at Kitty’s afterward—but Bob couldn’t find me a seat at the bar, so we ate at the self-serve canteen (“Herb’n’Kitchen”) in the hotel—cappuccino (yay—I can have dairy again!) and a roast beef/fontina/arugula (grown on the hotel’s rooftop) sandwich on focaccia. But because the focaccia was soggy, I just ate the “innards.” Since Bob had had several Guinnesses, I drove us home…in his little front-wheel-drive Fusion Hybrid. Those hamster flakes were supposed to have turned to rain by midafternoon. Yeah, right. They were coming down hard and fast and sticking. It was sloppy walking and touchy driving—the main roads were salted and plowed, but not the neighborhood streets & alleys. Managed to get us home safely.

Poured myself some Beaujolais Nouveau (Momessin) and flipped on the TV. What was on? A PBS special called “Hugs & Knishes,” about how food. tradition & family intertwine in Judaism. So what did I eat? Chopped liver, of course. Watching a special on “Hamilton” right now. Makes me miss the Bar Show (“Shamilton”) already—and realizing as I listened to the actual songs how verbatim our harmonies were, and how closely the parody lyrics (our writers are brilliant) track the original. Can’t wait till I see the real thing this April!

    Eric - LOL

  • ChiSandy, I'm glad your performance in the Bar Show was great. I so enjoy (and envy) your gusto for life.

Nance, the snow picture is lovely. We're having rain for several days but the temperature today was high 60's.

Lacey, your cookies are too pretty to eat. The gathering at your son's place sounded like great fun. Also the lunch with Susan. I hope you told her how much she is missed on this forum.

SpecialK, I'm sorry that the military funeral fell short, but what a wonderful ceremony on the dock! I think I will remember your account and pass it on as a unique example of family solidarity and ingenuity.

Red, how nice that your dad was entertained by "hamster snowflakes."

This afternoon dh and I and another couple attended the afternoon performance of a fantastic Christmas music program presented by a church. We go every year and it's one of the high points of the Christmas season. There's a large well-trained choir and symphony musicians and soloists. Afterwards we went to dinner at a nice restaurant. I had char grilled drum that was served with wild rice and green beans. The fish was topped with crab meat. Dh had an oyster and pasta dish that looked delicious and he described it as such. One of our friends made the same choice and her dh chose a pasta with crab meat filling (I'm drawing a blank on the name of the pasta!!!!).

    Wow, busy bunch here!

Sandy, glad your show went well.

Special, so sorry about the blanks not being brought. That was the most moving part of my Dad's Military funeral if you don't count when they handed me the folded flag. I lost it completely on that one. Hubby and kids sound very resourceful though and Dad knew someone came through on that front.

We had some snow on the ground when we woke up this morning but it is supposed to turn to all rain. Some co workers called in late because they live it Litchfield county and they had quite a bit more than we did in Central CT. Winter has arrived..it is supposed to be in the teens by Friday. YUK!

Yesterday I made a big pot of beef barley soup and I also made the innards of what will become a beef pot pie at some point since I cut up a roast that I had in the freezer and had too much beef for just the soup. Served the soup with grilled cheese sammies on sourdough bread. Very nice chilly weather dinner. Brought a bowl of the soup to work today for lunch. That particular soup goes quickly in my house no matter how big a pot I make. We both love it plus I brought a big container to my neighbor who just had surgery.

Today, we are having leftover roast chicken from Saturday with potatoes and veggies.

Need ideas on the best brand of pressure cooker. DD asked me what I want for Xmas and that is what I decided. Let me know ladies cause I know you all use them and I have not in many years. I have an oldfashioned one my Mom left me when she passed and I never use it.

April, I use an instant pot duo, and I think that's what Lacey has too. They are electric. The main reason I went with that one is the stainless steel liner. Makes it much easier to clean and things don't stick. I couldn't be happier with it. It's a brand with many fans.

chisandy - thank you for your thorough re-telling of the performance nuances, it makes me feel like I am there! I have no problem speaking in public but I have never been in a performance of any kind other than choir at church, I admire those who can sing/dance/act in a live setting!

eric - and it may hit the fan...Lol!

carole and april - they called themselves The Replacements, and I am sure my FIL was smiling down! He was referred to as Mr. Fixit so that is what they did too!

Crockpot chicken and dumplings---just so so

The strawberry banana cheesecake salad is pretty good. I didn't use strawberries as I had blackberry in the fridge.

1 block softened cream cheese, 1 container softened cool whip 16 oz vanilla yogurt 1/2 bag of mini marshmallows and a small package of jello cheesecake pudding, Mix these together well in a bowl. then add your fruit and 3 sliced bananas, The bananas will discolor, so if you are sharing this you want to make it and eat it the same day, otherwise, close your eyes and enjoy.

You can change up the fruit, add nuts, etc.

Redhead - sounds yummy but I'll have to make for my Chickenfoot group. It would be too much for me even if I ate it every day for a week.

After a couple of days eating out, when we got home I wanted soup. Made a big pot of vegetable beef with part of a chuck tender roast. Very satisfying on a cold windy night.

Yum, Nance! These are definitely soup days. Yours sounded delish! I thought that I'd make some today, but I never got to the store and had no energy after teaching my lil classes, so did nothing about dinner (last night I made an olive oil crust and kale/onion/tomato quiche that was easy and tasty). When DH came home from his meeting late this afternoon, I was sitting in the kitchen with no evidence of cooking going on, so he offered to get Greek food from our favorite take out. We usually get kebabs from there, but I was hankering for soup, so I got a big bowl of their chicken/lemon/rice soup and grk salad, which both hit the spot. DH got the lamb shank which was also good along with butternut squash and spinach/rice. He forgot to get baklava, sadly.

I have started a Zpac and hope it helps me defeat this crud. If I feel better tomorrow, I will do a big food shopping trip, since we have a really airy fridge! I need to get some energy back.....

Today I awoke at 4:30 AM and started obsessing about things I am not getting done for the wedding.....like securing a venue for the rehearsal dinner. Soooo, I called down to Amelia Island and got that done. Still need to speak with the owner to be sure they can accommodate the doc vegans. It's a tapas restaurant which has a separate space that seems like it would work well for our crew. We'll see. At least I got the process started. DS2's fiance is a very efficient planner, so she has probably been dying that I am dragging my feet compared to her. Soon I need to design my invitations, which I did for DS1's rehearsal dinner event. It was fun doing that.....hope I haven't lost my touch totally. So a trip to Paper Source is in my future.....

Special, I was stunned to hear about the funeral disappointment. If everyone would just do their jobs!! Good thing you have a "carrying" family! We would need to use caps! :/ I feel reassured that this will never happen to your family again. I hope you can rest up a bit now that you are home....

    April, Nance is correct about my pressure cooker brand. I am ashamed to say that I have not taken it out of the box....but this week that would be a good idea! I have no more deadlines for anything...so I should get on my big girl pants and try it out. I did see a gal on utube using one and it doesn't look scary like my mother's. ;

lacey - hope you are feeling better soon! You can bet DH will double and triple check if we do another military honors funeral! Is the restaurant you are thinking of using for the rehearsal dinner Espana? I don't have any personal experience, but with that area being a tourist destination most restaurants there are good, or they don't last. If you are looking for a burger place at any point there are two - blocks apart, that serve among the best burgers I have ever had - T-Rays (quirky hours, take note), and Tasty's. Both are mobbed at all times, but worth the wait!

  • April, Susan's pressure cooker is a two-pot version. Smaller pot and larger pot. She loves it and mentioned using it often, especially for dry beans. Nance may remember the name. It is stove top, not electric. I was gifted a used electric pressure cooker but it sits out in the storage building that also houses my second refrigerator. I didn't have a spot to store it in the kitchen and wasn't using it. I tend to use the stove top and two ovens. The microwave is mainly for reheating leftovers. I'm sure I would become a pressure cooker convert if I got a new one with some recipe instructions for inspiration.

Monday night's meal was large lima beans cooked with massive amount of onion and ham. DH was the cook and the beans were delicious. I don't know what happens to all that onion. LOL. I cooked brown rice and it turned out perfect. I finally remembered the amount of water that works for me, 2 1/2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice, steamed on the stove top for approx. 40 min. The salad was romaine, cucumber, grape tomatoes, blue cheese, Greek olives and avocado. Yum, yum.

Last night's dinner was leftover linguine and red sauce made with Italian sausage. Grated cheese stirred into the cold pasta and sauce and warmed in an open pyrex dish in the small electric oven. I use the electric oven when possible since our electric bill is $0, thanks to solar panels. Call me tightwad. The salad was a repeat from Mon. night.

On Monday I made a batch of turkey spinach meatballs and have three meal servings in Ziploc bags in the freezer. Eric does turkey pot pies, I do turkey meatballs! The recipe I used is from Bon Appetit.

We'll probably have the meatballs tonight with cauliflower mash.

My dad will want a military funeral. I think I will tote my own bullets to the service......just in case. Honestly special, it sounds like a scene from a bad movie.......

I don't have a pressure cooker but I made a comment on Facebook after reading all your posts. An attorney friend said "now you have said pressure cooker on Facebook, t he FBI will be monitoring you" and another frined decided to order one.....She said she was gong to make beef stew in it, but I haven't heard how it turned out. On Cyber Monday, they were 68.00.

Been to a few military funerals. The last one was back in Sept. when my Uncle passed away. I know my hubby will want a military funeral as he is retired Navy.

As to dinner, I don't have a flipping clue yet

I think Susan's is a Fagor Duo. If you like beans, like we do, it's worth having a pressuree cooker for that alone. It's also fabulous for making stock.

Lacey, I am so sorry for your continued suffering. I thought mine was never going to end, and indeed, I still have a lingering cough. But it did eventually get better. I was surprised at the length of the accompanying fatigue. Hope the meds work for you.

red - if they only needed bullets they probably could have procured them, the issue is that they need blanks - special rounds that make the sound without a deadly projectile.

My DH will also want military honors having spent 28 years on active duty and continuing to work for Special Operations Command as a civilian. If I survive him I will be making very sure the honor guard has their rounds. BTW - taps is not played by a bugler - apparently there are few. They use a bugle with a recording housed inside

Every military funeral I have been to so far had a bugler.

Dinner tonight is bbq'd pork ribs, salad and oven baked French fries.

mommy - the ones in the past that I attended had live buglers, but it seems as though they are not training new ones due to budget cuts and downsizing of band units. Here is an article about it from a few years ago. I think it also depends on where one lives - the honor guard can be made up of volunteers and if they have a bugler among them in the local area that is available during the day, then those folks are fortunate.

Today I had derm appointment (only 12 places frozen) and eye doc appointment (pressure in eyes went down from 20 to 17 so no longer worried about glaucoma). But the absolutely best news...wait for it... I had blood work done last week and they hadn't released the CA 27-29 cancer antigen results to "my Chart" yet. Of course I was nervous since the number had been slowly increasing & 6 months ago the result was up to 30. (upper limit of the 'OK' range is 35). Yes, I know this test is only an indication - but still... I stopped by the lab today and they checked for me even though the doc hasn't reviewed or yet. HOORAY - the number is now 19. I can't even begin to tell you how relieved I feel that the trend is downward.

So I wanted a good hamburger. No "Five Guys" or "Beck's Prime" by the med center. I went to my favorite restaurant in the area - the one where I usually have the Rainbow Trout & French green lentils & sauteed spinach - and ordered their cheese burger & added sauteed mushrooms. Oh my, I think I've died and gone to heaven. Homemade wheat bun, both Cheddar & Monterrey jack cheese, cooked just over pink with wonderful juices. Lettuce, tomato, onion & pickle & condiments on the side. Luckily I was able to force myself to stop after eating only half the 8 oz burger, but ate all the fries. This was at 2:30pm. 7-1/2 hours later I am still full. But what a wonderful meal.

Now I have to figure out how to re-heat this luscious leftover tomorrow w/o ruining it. I may just have to eat it cold - and that would be OK too.

Special - interesting about the bugles. Who would have guessed.

  • m0mmy,

Minus, yay for tumor markers! Worthy of a celebration! For some reason, my doc didn't do one last time, which makes me a little anxious.

Roast chicken, yellow rice and haricorts verts tonight. Nothing very exciting.

minus - yay for a 19! Worthy of a decadent burger.

ms latte - LOL on the burgler!!!

Leftover beef stew and a romaine salad with diced honeycrisp apple and goat cheese. Sadly, I was nuking a potato to go in the mix for breakfast burritos for tomorrow and the built in microwave went kaput! Eeeks! I want a Kitchenaid stainless steel to match the new dishwasher I got for a song and my cooktop, but I just priced them and almost fell out of my chair. Fortunately DD's countertop microwave was in the garage, so at least I can continue using a microwave until I figure out what to do. I have a single oven and built in micro combo - I may have to replace both as a unit. What excellent timing... NOT!

    Holy CowSpecial!!!!!

  • Minus, good news on the tumor marker. The burger is my kind of celebration! I probably would have eaten the whole thing.

SpecialK, you deserve the pricey microwave.

Dinner tonight is the annual Woodworkers' Guild Christmas dinner, so no cooking. It's held at an events place and the food is...typical of an events place. A buffet with a server slicing paper thin slices of roast turkey breast and beef roast.

YAY For the Tumor Markers going down!! Burger has my mouth watering.

SPECIAL< Thanks for cluing in the clueless about the special rounds .....DUH on some level I am sure I knew that.......

Ribs sound good---my Dad had them last night at the nursing home, and he ate one bite and decided it was too much trouble to chew and left them. The didn't cut up likie they were tough and the smelled so good. He is not eating vey well these days. But he is not losing weight, so I guess it isn't an issue yet.

My cough is hanging on but I am feeling better. The ten days for the antibiotic were up on Tuesday and I still sound horrible when I cough. Tomorrow I see the breast surgeon (hopefully for the last time) and the eye doctor for my annual dilation exam. It is bitterly cold here today. chill factor 6.
