    Tonight is going to be Chicken noodle soup. I have stock in the freezer and leftover chicken so will make a pot of soup and something simple like grilled cheese sammies. I have been craving one of those for awhile now and while I make them for hubby every so often, I rarely eat them even though I love them. I have a few nice cheeses so will see what I use. I think I will tell hubby to pick up a loaf of sourdough bread from the bakery since I love grilled cheese on that bread. I can always make what is not used into crouton.

    Yay for the low tumor markers, Minus!

    Tonight’s dinner was the path of least resistance: fettucine Bolognese (I have one of those Fasta Pasta microwave pasta cookers, and had half a jar of Bolognese sauce and a big chunk of Parm Reg. in the fridge). Because I took half a Xanax this a.m. (had a Flexeril at bedtime last night for my back), my DOTD was seltzer. (And a mug of Teavana Ayurvedic Chai with honey at bedtime in about an hour).

    Back is slowly improving, but the actual doc (not the P.A.) at the Immediate Care Center wants to see me tomorrow about getting an MRI to rule out a muscle or ligament tear. (He says he didn’t see anything “concerning” on the x-ray, but since I’m on osteopenic and on an AI and there’s always the spectre of mets lurking in the background, the clinic is probably—and understandably—covering its butt).

    And my little girl kitty Heidi has a kidney stone; she will need surgery next Fri. Meanwhile she has been switched to a special wet diet—so we’ll have to feed the cats separately, on a schedule, behind closed doors. No more free-feeding kibble (a no-no for her) or allowing her wet food dish out in the open—her brother Happy (on the cusp of being an “obeast”) will eat anything not nailed down as long as it comes out of a can or kibble box.

    So happy to hear your good news, Minus! And thanks for the literary food porn....that burger sounded delicious!

    I never made it to the food store yesterday...totally devoid of any energy. So I had to get creative with what we had on hand. Found a bag of already cooked mini meatballs in my freezer. Paired them with some Rao's marinara sauce and had it over a box of orchiette that I had been wanting to try. Salad with the rest of our romaine, grape tomatoes, etc. with the horseradish dressing.

    Tonight we had leftovers of that pasta warmed up with melted mozzarella over it, and a salad with lots of red and green leaf lettuce that I picked up at the produce grocer. I had been out clothes shopping in the late afternoon and became exhausted, so quickly picked up the produce on way home while DH warmed and "cheesed" the pasta. It was actually quite good. Tho I was very hungry. ;). Am tired of feeling tired.....have one more day on the Zpac, so I hope it spells relief.

    Hope you are getting better Red. I am horrified at how many people I know who have this longstanding bug.

    The dinner plan I donated to a fundraiser was bought/won by a friend of ours and he left me an email that we should plan for the four of us to enjoy it together. Hmmmm. That is very sweet, but the offering was a casual dinner to be delivered to a household to make their life easier...consisting of chicken pastina soup, faux french bread, green salad of their choice, and pizzelles for dessert. I'll call our friend tomorrow to see if they would like it delivered or enjoy it here. I thought they would love to have it at home since they recently have taken in their newly divorced daughter and her young children. But maybe a dinner out of the house would give them a break.

    Tomorrow I will hit the food store, and start some kale soup, which I feel will be curative. :))))

    Think I’ll defrost some coho fillets and saute some snap peas, maybe a salad first (Caprese? Low on basil but still have some homegrown ‘maters).

    My secret vice is those crispy “shrimp chips” you get at Cantonese restaurants (well, at least those of my Brooklyn childhood). They look like little pieces of stained glass (though most are colorless) and when you deep-fry them (takes a few seconds) they puff up. (You can also nuke them for about 20 sec., but they don’t get as big and can burn more easily even though sometimes the edges are still hard). I’ve been housebound ever since my back went blooey, so haven’t been able to get to the Asian grocery on B’way; so I ordered one box each of plain and colored ones from Amazon. They came yesterday. I opened the plain ones’ box first, and was surprised to see little black speckles in them—been buying that Vietnamese brand for years. Nuked a couple, and my mouth was on fire! I looked at the ingredients list……and there were the words “black pepper” and “chiles.” Oops. Shoulda read the Amazon listing more carefully!

    Yeah, I know they’re carby as all get-out, with just enough shrimp meal for flavor, but they taste so good! (And buying the DIY ones is much cheaper than getting them already cooked—if you can even find them that way).

    Lacey It was the full five days after I took the last of the z-pak before I thought I felt a bit better. I am still coughing a lot. and tired. Today our newspaper carried an article about whooping cough again in our community, but they were most worried ab out children who had not been vaccinated.

    I saw the breast surgeon today---he said he wants to follow me for 5 years. I told him my Rad Onc was gonna be done next year and he said, well there isn't anything else for her to do....(She gives the best breast exam you would ever want) but he thinks I need to see him since he is a surgeon???? Honestly I don't think him or the ONC would find a lump unless it was sticking up visible on my chest. I know you all know what kind of breast exam I am talking about. I knw if I missed something, my RAD ONC would find it instantly....

    Dinner tonight was Chili 5-ways from the local Steak-N-Shake place. Friend Melodie met me at the eye doctors after they dilated my eyes and instead of taking me home, we ran all over town looking for a advent calendar for a friend from Malaysia who didn't have a clue what one was. She was thrilled over it. Then we went a couple more places and decided to eat before she brought me home.... Have you ever tried to shop in brightly lit stores with your eyes dilated and no sun glasses.....bet they wondered what I was on...

    Oooh, Red, that kind of a shopping trip sounds like one to be missed. I seem to remember in the olden days the eye docs gave us paper sunglasses to wear home after dilation. It is brutal to be in a brightly lit store with those pupils taking in every bit of light! How nice to introduce your Malaysian friend to your Christmas tradition.

    I finally got to the food store today and loaded up on supplies for the first time since T-giving! They had some nice salmon so I made that with a maple/mustard glaze for dinner with sides of roasted butternut squash (with a touch of the same glaze over each half) and a big red leaf lettuce salad. One of those meals that hits the spot with me.

    DH was in NH today putting his convertible car to bed. He leaves it with a neighbor there who has an extra garage, and he has a yearly ritual of his driving it up, taking the neighbor out for lunch, and then he returns by bus to Boston and trains out to our town. So, he bought this box of Seattle Chocolates at the NH bus depot, and we have had a few for desert. Pretty good. :)

    Thanks for the virus trajectory, Red. The two things that have been making me feel totally dysfunctional have been the coughing and fatigue. I will be very happy when they subside. In fact, if I don't start to feel a bit more alive by next week, I will go to have a chest xray, per my doc's suggestion. I hope that this lingering virus thing is not a sign of what old age is going to be like.....orI'll be wearing gloves and a mask whenever I leave the house ! :/

    We will finally look for a little Christmas tree tomorrow. Last year's Charlie Brown tree was just perfect for our low key holiday...and minimal work! We passed DS2's ornaments on to him and his fiancee, so we have less ornaments now...perfect for a small tree. :) My sister plans to drive down from VT to be here for Christmas, and she is a Charlie Brown tree kind of gal, so this will be perfect. Now we just need to find one!

    ROs generally don’t continue a patient’s care once rads have been completed. The BS is usually in charge of periodic breast exams and followup imaging, and the MO generally takes over whatever medical care the patient needs unless the primary care doc handles the non-cancer-related stuff. So it’s entirely normal for the BS to follow up for several years post-op.

    I finished my 10 days of Keflex last night, and my lungs are clear and sinuses draining only the usual clear postnasal drip. My back still hurts, though.

    Red - I'm fortunate that my BS is: a) a female, and b) offered to follow up for an extra two years because my fantastic MO who we all loved retired. Her exams are great. My RO is also a female and ask if I'd like to come in to see her for longer than usual for the same reason. She too gives a great exam. Then there's the new MO....ho hum. I'm not convinced he's worth my time although he said I need to see him every 6 months for a total of 5 years, Monday will be my 3rd appointment with him & I'm feeling very judgemental - and not in a good way. We'll see how he addresses my questions this time.

    Dinner yesterday was cold boiled shrimp, a largish salad and 9 grain bread. Yes of course with lots of butter. Dinner tonight was a large avocado surrounded by red leaf lettuce and two of the little 'stuffin muffins' that I made with the leftover Thanksgiving dressing & popped in the freezer. They're great to eat with your hand like a muffin - of course with more butter. I just finished a bowl of popcorn for dessert.

    Hope all of you with the crud will get to feeling better. I sure puts a damper on holiday preparations.

    I just switched doctors, Minus, so I know about the "bleh" with a doctor The new one is unusual and I already like her. My appointment was at 3pm but I got there early to fill out all the new patient paperwork. At about 5 minutes before 3, the assistant brought me in to get my vitals and the doctor came in at 3:01 (!). I had copies of my older lab results and physician notes, and she spent the next 90 minutes with me going over those and my family history. I was astounded.

    I'm getting a physical from her in a couple of weeks and after she ordered up the usual battery of lab tests, she said the physical and discussion afterwards would take around 2 hours.


    Dinner tonight. For me, I ate some leftover turkey. Sharon and DD are going to the Arizona Coyotes (hockey) game, so they are going to be eating arena food. For tomorrow, I will braise a pot roast in a honey, balsamic vinegar, spicy mustard mix.

    Leftover delivered Cantonese food tonight: beef chow fun, shrimp in black bean sauce, chicken kow, and roast duck with broccoli. And as little rice & sauce as possible.

    A neighbor called in the late afternoon and her husband wanted pizza, so he picked up 3 of us 'single' ladies that he calls his "harem". Um, not - one widow & two divorced + his wife - but he loves the joke. I ordered 2 pieces of pepperoni & mushroom pizza which was wonderful, along with a huge salad and brought one piece home for tomorrow. Or maybe the next day since I must eat the leftover pork I took out of the freezer.

    10:20 a.m still in Pj's although I did put on shoes and sox to get the newspaper off the porch ....styling today, what can I say.

    Surely this yuk isn't coming back for round two--woke up with stuffy head and sore throat...it started snowing again yesterday (not hamster size, but good ones).

    Breakfast was a glass of OJ followed by a left from yesterday Boston Creme Pie Donut.. I spent the day yesterday in my parent's empty house making cookies with the Cookie press--a family tradition at our house. She had a huge kitchen compared to my galley Missed my mom who has been gone 3 years now and my dad with the TV on sneaking in to steal a cookie as they cooled. Maybe I overdid it. I just don't know. I so overbought cream cheese. It was on sale--the two packs for 2.00 if you bought four.....Well dumbo here didn't remember that you only use 3 oz of cream cheese per batch of cookie--it was the little blocks not the ones we have now....My mom and my aunt always made the dough-I was the one with the wrist action to crank them out. I also tinted the dough after being carefully taught how little food coloring to use...I did get a batch of really dark green tree's and some pretty hot pink candy canes this year....My mom would have been horrified. I guess I can make a cheese ball or two, but I really don't want a cheesecake.

    Dinner will be tamale's with red sauce and sour cream

    Maybe some green tinted sour cream, Red?! It is fun to pull up Christmas cookie baking memories when making our own, isn't it? Always love remembering how my brother and I looked forward to hearing the word "reject" when my mother was making cookies since those were the ones we got to eat immediately!

    Last night's dinner was baked chicken thighs, acorn sqush with maple and butter, and red leaf lettuce salad with pear and assorted other healthful stuff and evoo and balsamic for dressing.

    I roasted extra chicken thighs and a turkey thigh to use in soups I plan to make this week.

    Will also make some cookie dough today...and bak them tomorrow when it is forecasted to be snowy.

    red - I could feel you there in the empty house making cookies - I am sure a host of memories. Glad you got some interesting cookies out of the time spent! Hope you are not sliding back into the depths of extended illness. Love tamales - am thinking of getting some from my local good Mexican restaurant for Christmas Eve - $16.95 for a dozen. A couple thoughts on how to use up your excess cream cheese - last year I made a new recipe with those filo cups you can get in the frozen section - it is a jalapeno popper filling - cream cheese, pickled jalapenos that are chopped, cheddar cheese, green onion that is mixed together. Put it in the cups, top with panko and parmesan cheese and bake for about 12-15 mins at 350 F. Alternatively you could just put it in a baking dish and use it as a dip with crackers. It is forgiving enough that if you didn't have jalapenos, you could use drained salsa or green chilies too. Also, if you have tortillas you can mix cream cheese, shredded chicken, green onions, hot sauce and spread it on tortillas and make Buffalo chicken roll ups, chill and then slice into pinwheels.

  • DH made a big pot of chicken sausage gumbo on...hm, the days run together. It must have been Thursday or Friday. It came out really good and we've been slurping up rich gumbo over rice. Down to just enough for lunches.

    Tonight is turkey meatballs and cauliflower mash. I mentioned having that another night but we didn't have it. The scales tell me comfort food encourages one to eat big portions.

    Red, cream cheese lasts a long time in the refrigerator, practically forever. Especially the full fat cream cheese.

    Nance, tell me about making dinner rolls, freezing them and then having them on a holiday. I'm thinking I'll make the Pioneer Woman's cloverleaf dinner rolls for Christmas dinner. It would be helpful to make them ahead of time since my family eats holiday meals just past noon.

    Went out to dinner last night for our 33rd anniversary - DH had a steak with baked Gorgonzola, a side of linguine with marinara, a Caesar salad, and a crazy big piece of chocolate cake. We had an inexpensive decent wine, B.R. Cohn Silver label cab, DH two glasses and one for me - but I also had a glass of prosecco. I had a dish called cremosa aragosta - fettucine in a cream sauce with spinach, artichoke, and lobster, a house salad, and a really good limoncello cake with lemon mascarpone frosting. Tonight we will be at the Buccaneer's game, so some average stadium food.

    You guys make me hungry. Dinner was pasta with turkey italian sausage and lots of veggies in a garlic oil sauce. Large salad with homemade balsamic dressing. Dessert was pound cake. Milk less.

    Special - happy 33. The cremosa aragosta sounded intriguing so I attempted to google a recipe. Oh yes there were plenty, but every one in Italian. When i clicked "cremosa in inglese" - still no English. Funny.

    Carole - I agree about the tendency to eat too much when it's 'comfort' food. After a dinner of salad & one large slice of pizza I was content to save the other piece. Not happy mind you, but OK with it. Then at 10:30 after I finished the Christmas cards - when I wasn't even really hungry - I ate that second piece.

    Red - Thanks for posting about making cookies in your Mom's kitchen. It made me stop and think of all the good cooking times & had with my Grandma and my Mother.

    Lacey - I can't remember if I told you thanks for posting about your visit with Susan. i surely miss her on this thread but understand she is swamped.

    Off to an Advent concert by the Bach society with my NIL (I just made this up = niece-law). I'm sorry I don't speak German, but the music with period instruments will be delightful. And afterwards we'll meet my nephew, who is keeping the 15 month old during the concert so his wife can go with me. Dinner at the Raven Grille. Report to follow.

    Carole, the butter rich rolls seem to freeze best for me. I've tried letting them rise, then freezing, or freezing them raw, then rising and baking as needed, but I have the best result baking the rolls, then freezing them.Warmed in the oven, they taste freshly baked. Plus you don't have to let them rise for hours. But as I said, they need a lot of butter in the dough.

    I'm out of many things, but managed to find a hambone in the freezer so it's ham and beans and cornbread tonight. Short work in the pressure cooker.

    Oh Red, bittersweet for sure. My mom was not a cook, so I don't have those memories. In fact I don't remember Christmas cookies much at all. My mom did make homemade fudge and my grandmother was famous for her divinity, which she only made at Christmas. Makes my teeth ache to think about it lol!

    I started fruit and nut breads (Harvest loaf from KAF) for the holidays. I'll finish them tomorrow and they'll go in the freezer until needed. Most are gifts.

    I'm also decorating our "Charlie Brown" tree. I don't know if we'll ever get the big one out again. Way too much work and too little enthusiasm. But this one is cheery enough and oh so easy.

    Special, happy 33rd!

    I am getting severe cabin fever. Bad enough that I threw my back out last Monday (or more precisely, it went out—I was doing absolutely nothing when I felt that lightning bolt on the right side of my waist between my spine and upper spine, and my muscles immediately went into intractable spasm). Bad enough that the only time I got out of the house was to be driven (a block & a half) to the Immediate Care clinic Tues. afternoon and have used a wheelchair, shopping cart (at CVS to get my Rxs filled) and Rollator ever since. Now we're getting loads of sloppy, wet heavy snow, and even if I could get dressed (beyond changing between my nightie and my sweats) I can't do diddly-squat. I was able to hire a snow guy via my neighborhood blog, but he needs to wait till most of the snow has finished falling (they're predicting 10-11pm). We have about 5" thus far and may get as much as 8". Meanwhile, Bob is stuck down in Oak Lawn, at Christ Hospital. Last night, he feared he'd be unable to get out of our garage this morning, so he stayed at a hotel in Oak Lawn. But because that 'burb's snow removal is worse than Chicago's, he might have to spend tonight sleeping in the on-call room or on the couch in the doctors' lounge at Christ.

    I had to postpone my nail appt (they're getting really raggedy and in no shape to play guitar) to tomorrow—if I get there, it'll have to be by Uber, and just getting down the stairs to the sidewalk will be a chore (and I will need help putting on my boots). And the reason I need to repair my nails is that I'm scheduled to perform on-air Tues. night (with my singing partner coming down from Madison, WI) on WDCB's Holiday Hoot concert—but I will probably be unable to drive the 30 miles (or still be on a muscle relaxer that'd make it too dangerous for me to take the wheel), much less walk from a non-HC space in the parking lot (I haven't had a placard in 18 months) carrying a guitar. Asking my singing partner to pick me up would take him an hour out of his way at either end of the trip. If I have to back out of the radio concert as well, I hope there’s enough room in the Dec. 20 lineup for us—and that I’m in shape to get there. We leave for NYC & DC on the 22nd—though I will definitely use airport wheelchairs, having to use a Rollator for the entire trip will be a bummer (to put it mildly). I can sit and lie down and stand for short periods okay, but walking is rough and getting up from a chair is brutal and bending down past where my knees can do all the work is impossible.

    This morning, I made slow-scrambled eggs (so wet & creamy I needed to eat them with a spoon) and a turkey-sausage-“biscuit” sandwich (cut two circles from a piece of sourdough toast, put a turkey sausage patty in between and nuked it for 30 sec.). Two cups of coffee thus far—and tonight I’ll probably switch to Oolong tea for the last of the Chinese leftovers.

    I have a voice lesson (Skype) in a few minutes. We’ll see if I can sit up straight enough to get through it.

    Oh Sandy, poor you, that sounds just awful! Have you had this before? I feel so sorry for folks with chronic back issues, they suffer so. My dad had to have a fusion a number of years ago and has suffered to varying degrees since. My only experience thus far, (knocking on every piece of wood in my proximity) has been a bout of sciatic pain, which was bad enough, but at least it was intermittent. I hope you can get some relief soon Sandy.

    SK, congratulations on thirty three years of wedded bliss! Your meal sounds awesome. I'm making a cake for Christmas eve dinner with mascarpone icing. I LOVE that stuff! I love cake, but in this case, the cake is just a medium for the icing. Of course I had to leave town for the mascarpone, as my one and only attempt to make it myself was an abject failure.

    Nancy, I’ve gone through this with either my back or neck every 2-3 years or so since my late 20s. Osteoarthritis of the cervical & lumbar spine, and my scoliosis doesn’t help matters any. Always comes on suddenly, but till now it’s been as a result of twisting or stepping off a high curb or bending. This time I didn’t do anything to bring it on. I was on prednisone for laryngitis for 6 days before that so I could perform in the Bar Show, and the doc’s P.A. speculates I might have injured it during the run of the show and it didn’t manifest till the day after my last pill when the prednisone was out of my system.

    The braised beef turned out excellent. I used this recipe. Recipe It was a bit sour, so I added honey to suit my taste buds. I think I added about 3 more tablespoons of honey.

    I let it cook for about 8 hours in the dutch oven in the oven and the meat is tart, but not sour.

    The other thing I did today was to fix the rear brakes on my commute to work car. I didn't feel like doing the work, but it *HAD* to get done, so I got out the air tools and put in my ear plugs (I hate the noise that air tools make). Thirty one minutes from gathering the tools to having everything put away. The car now, as they say, "Stops on a dime and gives 9 cents change".
