grannydukes~can you buy a probiotic at a health store?  It's got the good bacteria you get from the yogurt in a capsule.

to the Texas ladies, we got rain today too! thank goodness, we were heading into stage three water restrictions - that's when you through your hands in the air and let the yard turn to hay!

Gina and SAWS will fine you big time if you don't follow their rules.  We have not gone into any water restrictions but our town gets our water from the Guadalupe river.  And the rain was wonderful.  the thunder woke me up last night and I did not even care I was so happy to get some rain

just spoke to my DIL whose mother just had a lumpectomy today for DCIS.  For the life of me I do not understand why radiation oncologist do not tell people everything and make it seem like radiaiton is a walk in the park.  My DIL tells me they said she is going to start radiation on Monday.  So I asked since she just had surgery yesterday if they had done her simulation yada yada yada.  And no she does not think so and I said well I can imagine that they would have done it before surgery because they need to know where the surgical site is.  Anyway so I explained the whole simulation process then how the RO has to make the plan then dry run and then you start.  Also my DIL said the RO said it would be a breeze and she could use aloe vera is she needed to but probably would not need anything.  Yeah right!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They must teach the Dr's what to say in RO school.  Do they ever wonder why people get so dismayed when their treatments turns out so differently than what they are told????????????  I told her to ask about creams and gave her the names of some that are suppose to work good I told her to tell her mother if he is old school and only wants aloe vera use the other stuff anyway and don't tell him

Sherry - What is up with that RO?  Rads starting on Monday?  Isn't that much too soon?  I had to wait 4 weeks after my lumpectomy to start.  The incision has to heal first.  Sounds like I would be looking for a new RO.  You are right, some ROs need to go back for refresher courses in patient care and what they need to tell patients - like the truth and nothing but the truth.

Jo I really don't think she is starting on monday she is probably starting the process but they should have explained all that to her.

Sherry - Whew!  I hope so.  You will be a big help in that department with the experience you have had.

My RO laid it all out for me at the first visit - the possibility of "softened" ribs for a long time after rads, the lung problems you can have, the possibility of rare cancers later in life (since you are young and well you will be around for a long time and the longer you live after radiation the more chance you have of developing other cancers), the burns, the fatigue and the real kicker - well they got all your tumor in chemo and surgery, but I have to radiate based on what your tumor was before treatment.....oh he had me at hello......

My head was spinning when I left his office.....

Rads were an absolute nightmare for me.  Very little information up front.  Did not know about the damn tattoos until they were doing them, not told I could use lotion, was told not to use any soap on the radiated area.  I was stupid enough to listen and ended up burned and a topical infection.  Needless to say, my RO was a moron.  I try not to think about rads at all these days.

Knew everything to expect before I had Rads..........RO was fantastic, and told me everything, and took 2 hours to talk to me and my kids.............She was wonderful, and was throughout the whole 36 treatments............

I knew each and every thing they were going to do, even the techs were great..........they all took me day to day through what I would be doing, from day 1 to day 36.......only fly in the ointment was finding out close to the end that they decided to do 3 more boosts then I was told at first............but that was a walk in the park after doing 33 already...........its unfair that so many RO's think their shit don't smell, and that you don't deserve better information

However I would not have left without all questions answered........that body is mine, not theirs, and I deserve the respect of being told...............like I have always said "they put their pants on one leg at a time.just like we do"...............

My radiologist is a cancer survivor.  He lost his right arm to bone cancer at the age of 16.  He takes the time to tell me everything he thinks I need to know and has plenty of time to answer my questions and those of my husband.

    Sagina who was your RO?

Completely agree that RO's downplay the effects of radiation.  I thought it was a breeze when I completed it in March but still have fatigue and early stages of lymphedema.  Also not pleased that the local RO and MO in White Plains did not urge PT when I initially saw them about my lymphedema--they both said that it was optional and that they usually see it much worse so I felt like I was being a hypochondriac.

It wasn't until I saw my oncologist at Mt. Sinai who urged PT asap in order to treat it.  Both the local RO, RO nurse and my MO had trouble measuring my arms and said it was "slightly" swollen--1cm and not 2cm.  All my NYC MO did was feel my arms and said yes--it is lymphedema and the quicker I get PT, the better.  Wish I had skipped the local doctors and had gone straight to the city.  Great new breast center at Mt. Sinai  http://www.mountsinai.org/patient-care/service-areas/cancer/areas-of-care/dubin-breast-center

Also still can't wear underwire bras because they hurt--I found some great padded camisoles. Thought I'd be at almost 100% but nowhere near it--I'm 48 and look pretty healty except I feel about 95 on the inside!

Brilan..............I have LE. my arm is wrapped right now so it is difficult to type cause my hand is covered partially..........Its mild, but a word of adivice............If you are sure you have LE don't wear the underwire bras........................was told not to by my Board Certified LE specialist.................Not happy about it, but its a no  no..........................See someone good when you go, they have to know what they are doing, or they can make it worse...................Mine came right after surgery.............I found it very early........My RO confirmed it and sent me to a specialist............I'm doing ok, and after just six weeks I am ready for a compression sleeve..............good luck

I went to a gastro md one week after starting rads, and even if techs say "the esphogus or other organs are not in the field, my doc said...let me know how you feel after rads..he had me take prevacid, double the over the counter dose for the rest of rads...and I felt much better.  Onc even said, everyone has different stressor points in their body and after having chemo and/or rads your body acts up somehow.

I also wanted to share this.  I made an appt for an eye appt, exam, and she said to me...smart thing to come here after chemo/rads or a base or to compare to last year, she took pics besides the exam cuz she said chemo/rads can effect vision years down the road...lovely...once again..the gift that keeps on giving.  Good news was that my exam results were great, no glasses needed yet, I do wear magnifyers to see the phone book, read books! not bad for 51 almost 52!

Hope everyone is feeling better and staying healthy.

i knew my old stomach issues were related to the rads but no one would say it directly...just skirted around it like you always have/had stomach issues....thanks a lot for kicking up the old stomach issues....

guess i betta get my eyes checked...havnt done that in a couple of yrs.

and dont even want to talk about the dentist....TMJ big time before and after the rads.

yeah this is the gift that keeps on giving.

i guess we are back on topic.damn bc sure does suk

I had eye issues during chemo and right after - my tear ducts were acting up...I've been in contacts since I was 12 and the eye doctor tried to tell me I wasn't cleaning them correctly.....NOT!  It has seemed to fix itself.

granny my DIL mother has this bug on Friday and ended up in the ER I helped get her home and settled (we where there visiting),  Anyway so I know I got this from her.  That being said it would not supprise me if rads makes things act up.  I have had gastritis off and on for years.  Finished rads 1/24 and started tamox 2/7.  Got so sick I could not get out of bed.  My MO said he thought it was the tamox making my gastritis act up.  But could it be rads made my stomach weaker and it just could not fight back??? If that was the case maybe I got this bug worse because my stomach is weak from rads.. Who nows.  I think just about anything is possible.

msjag-- I where eyeglases and went to the eye doctor before I started rads.  I have dry eyes.  He told me they would get worse during rads but then should get back to my normal dry afterwards.  Of course when I asked my RO about my eyes getting more dry he said it would not effect them.  Well guess what my eye doctor was right.  They have gone back to normal dry now, but he told me that I need to make sure I come in yearly and see him now because of taking tamox and having gone through rads.  My MO actually said I need to get a checkup every 6 months.  But think I am gonna skip this first one as I have just too many Dr's appt.  My next eye dr appt is Nov and think I am just gonna stick with that for now.
