Hi all,
It really does get better with time. I felt particularly horrible during the couple months AFTER finishing radiation - I think the emotional stuff finally hit me. My breast stayed swollen and sore until a couple months ago, but it finally is back to feeling like "normal" tissue. I do still have some fatigue problems, but my mood is definitely better and I don't think about cancer all the time. Personally, I prefer the term "in remission". Most people have some understanding of what it means, and it is possible to stay in remission for the rest of my life - and that's what I'm hoping for.

I have to say I must be weird or just the exception to the rule. I did not have a swollen breast at all with the exception of the first week after surgery and then I had to deal with a seroma.
Karen - I agree with thinking in terms of being in remission.

BTW ladies I needed a laugh... on my birthday (tues) my sister informed me she has breast cancer... I think they caught it early though... her onc said that she probably won't have any lymph involvement and she doesn't recommend chemo or radiation just anti-hormone therapy... but it has been a rough week for me...

Wow, Gma - I'm so sorry for your rough week. Prayers said for you and your sister....

gmafoley that was funny thanks for sharing, and so sorry to hear about your sister. What a rough week, we really needed the laugh. I have had a rough week as well.
Jo consider yourself lucky that your boob was not swollen. I am six months out and my breast if finally feeling normal again. It is still swollen but I think all the Celebrex that I take has made it feel better like not so full feeling. Hard to describe.

GmaFoley,
I'm so sorry to hear/read about your sister. Hugs to her and you and you both can get through this. We'll help.
Hi and hugs to everyone. Thank you all for your congrats on my 1 year cancerversary.
I wanted to add that I too was told by the PA at my surgeons office that my breast was still swollen from the radiation. My rads Dr. is one of those who won't admit to anything that radiation causes. He said rads only cause skin reaction and no pain, nerve damage, etc. He tried to tell me that the stinging, sharp pains, etc was from surgery. BULL $&!t !!!!!!! I like him a lot and trust him but he is so wrong.
We are leaving too. We are driving out to our daughter's in Maine in a month or so. I've got a coastal cottage rented and we'll get to be there for our newest grandsons 1st birthday and baptizing. I'm looking forward to this trip so much but am tired already. I do a good bit of the driving (but refuse to drive through Cleveland and hate it with a passion. We both would just as soon Cleveland not be there! LOL.) and I can't believe how tired I have been this week with just normal life going on. I am doing a lot of sleeping which is not usual for me but I am catching up from everything I think. I've been to busy planning everything plus keeping up with daily things and keeping my grand daughter 1 day a week.
We've got a Sweet 16 party to go to for my great nieces birthday on Saturday. Guess we'll go as I want to see my elderly parents but that niece is a typical 16 year old. Rude, haughty, uppity and doesn't know we exist. LOL.
Have a great weekend ladies and here is hugs to hold you through the weekend (((((((())))))))
Hugs,
Juanita

Gma Foley so sorry to hear about your sister. Will she have surgery? It is hard enough to experience this thing, but to have a sister go through it too? That is tough. I have a sister that is very high risk and I am working hard to get her to get tested. She had two biopsies in the past, when we were much younger. Will you keep us posted about your sister. She is in my thoughts. Thank you so much for giving me hope that my skin situation didn't have to get worse. So far it has been staying the same. 19 down 14 to go!

Gmafoley: sorry about your sister...Does this disease ever stop? She is in my prayers...
,
Ann731: congrats on finishing! Whoo hooo for you...I almost burst into tears during my last boost, it's very emotional...because, now you're done and now what? Hopefully the beast won't rear it's ugly head again...healing ((((hugs))) to you...0 -
Ladies - the weird thing is there was only one of my aunts got breast cancer in her 90s other than that there has been none until me... My sister is 70 - she is 13 years older than me.. She is going to have a lumpectomy I think and hopefully clear margins.. we shall see - she hasn't told me how her appt went..I don't want to call her too soon..she might need time to digest things and talk with my other sister... I hate being far away at times like this...
Oh the nerve pain came back and the doc upped my gabapentin - hopefully it goes away while my grandsons and mommy and daddy are here... they are with us through the weekend until tuesday.. My counselor at the cancer center got us free tickets to the fair .. wanted to take the boys to see the animals..

Since I finished rads 10 days ago I'm watching the skin peel and wearing gel strips over the really sensitive parts to allow them to start healing. My breast is particularly sensitive and I can't stand having a seat belt over it so I have that part under my arm when I'm driving. I'm just hoping I can get a prosthesis soon but I know I'm a bit swollen towards the back. How long has it taken for anyone here to grow their skin back when it's peeled off completely?

Fitz-my skin was completely peeled off under my breasts at the end of radiation, and I, too, had to use the gel strips. I was amazed at how quickly my skin came back once the process started. I remember my radiation onc said it would look like white patches that would gradually join together, and it did. I think it took about 2 weeks.
Now, I'm 16 months out, and you would never know how much damage I had under my breasts at one time.

Fitz I had a pretty bad burn and it took 3 weeks to heal on the outside, but you will still have uncomfortable times on the inside... For the seat belt issue I bought one of the shoulder pads for seatbelts and put it across my breast instead of the shoulder.

Fitz it took about two weeks to heal my raw skin. the inside is still healing and I finished the end of jan.
