I had most of my treatments at the general. But I had one at the Queensway because of a late change. They do try to schedule you close to where you live if you want. But some times it has to change for one reason or another. I was happy with both places. As for surgery, I think it has to do with where your surgeon works. I think they stick to one hospital. But I could be wrong.

I have done seven treatments at qch and the staff there is excellent.,.the irving Greenburgh cancer centre is very comforting...staff is caring and competent and I have no problems getting a parking space.
It is so convenient for me...I live in Johnstown, which is 40 minutes south of Ottawa,..all I do is hop on and off the 416 and I am there

Thanks so much everyone! I met with the surgeon (Dr Andrew Weekes) today at the Civic. He does his surgery out of QCH He'll also refer me on once he's happy with clean margins / any (extra) nodes that need removing to an oncologist at QCH... that closer distance to my home will save so much and it's even on my journey to work (well close to it!)
He's happy to do a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy (using the radio tracer) (what I was hoping for!) and go from there. He also confirmed I won't see Oncology until all possible surgeries are complete and pathology is back. Likely I will go through chemo then radiation and other treatments will depend on receptor statuses that they will only do after lumpectomy...
Since we're heading into the Christmas period and the hospitals have a 2 WEEK SHUTDOWN for all "elective" surgeries... they think we WANT this ) He warned me this likely meant January surgery. I also got a call from his secretary this afternoon and the "day" is 8th January... it will be a day surgery using general anesthetic.
I'm glad I made "progress" today although I'm now stalled on tests & "doing" anything for a month... I might get a month's swimming pass and go crazy getting fit to balance the less healthy eating over the holidays :P
Thanks again for sharing and making me so welcome0 -
I found out today who my chemo oncologist would be and my radiation oncologist. I am going to the Ottawa General. I looked up both doctors on google and my chemo oncologist does not have a good review at all. Mostly for his bed side manner.
Has anyone else had experience with Dr. Morgan or Dr. Goel?

Hi mommy13,
Dr. Morgan is my radiation oncologist. He's great. Very kind, patient and informative. My medical oncologist also has terrible bedside manner but she's very knowledgeable. As an example, I had cording in my armpit after surgery (I still have one stubborn one that won't go away) when I told my MO she basically said I wasn't doing the after surgery exercises enough and pretty much told me to suck it up. When I told Dr. Morgan he immediately referred me to the physiotherapist at the cancer clinic (who is awesome by the way). Over time I actually like having the two different approaches.
Good luck.

I met with Dr. M today... I was very impressed with his manner! He seems to be everything you described. From a first impression anyway!
Yes they don't always have the best bed side manner but knowledge is key!! I hope the other Dr. makes up with knowledge what he's lacking otherwise.I still have yet to meet him so we will see!

Hi ladies - happy New Year, it's been a while since I was on so thought I would check in. For anyone with after surgery issues (cording, pain, tightness, etc.) I cannot recommend Haley rehab enough. They specialize in post breast cancer treatment, they are just fantastic. Also just chiming in on Dr. Boyd - she's fabulous, if you are 'lucky' enough to get Arnoult and Boyd, you really have the dream team. They're fantastic - compassionate and caring but also very efficient.
I'm a year and a half out of surgery now and the only thing I'm experiencing is that my real one is now larger than the implant! Due to stress, etc. I was at an all time low weight wise when I had the surgery, and now that things have gone back to normal - so has my weight! I'm one of those that one of the first places I gain and lose is my boob(s) (which I forgot about in all the turmoil of choosing a surgery, if I could go back I would have done flap...as that would have given me the buffer needed) anyhow, I went to see Dr. Boyd as something had come up with the stitches on my reduction side, and she was so funny - she took one look at me and said, have you put on weight because I cannot imagine I made those that different in size (I'm petite and while I could stand to lose a few I'm relatively slender)!. She was so good, she's so realistic - she said if this is what 'normal' is then she would be more than happy to adjust however I wanted - new implant, reduction, different choice altogether. I'm not ready to face cosmetic surgery just now, and I definitely want to get to 5 years free just in case the other side goes rogue on me - but the offer was so appreciated. She didn't blame me, or say anything about a wait (which there would be) or anything negative, just practical, caring insight and options - and I was in and out of her office in under 10 mins!
For all the new joiners - sorry about your diagnosis, but this is a great place for help/insight/etc. And it's funny, when you're in it you can't imagine that it will ever end - but now it's really vague, someone asked me what size my tumour was, what my markers were, etc. I couldn't even remember!

Hi,
New to this forum. I had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction using tissue expanders a week ago today. Wondering if there's anyone out there who has had this type of surgery in the Gatineau area and what your experiences have been with the process and the various doctors involved.
Thanks,
Julie

Hi all,
I am starting my journey on this chapter of my life.
I am a mother of 6 year old and during my own exam, I found a lump in the right breast which started my journey.
Ultrasound, Mammogram, Biopsy - high stress/anxiety.. leading to surgery in mid-July - right breast lumpectomy along with sentinel node biopsy.
I have preliminary results so far, so not the entire data - around 2 cms lump, Node Negative, Lots of mucous found in the lump, clean margin..
I have appointments scheduled for Radiation Oncologist (General Hospital) and Medical Oncologist (Queensway Carleton) in coming weeks along with follow-up with my breast surgeon.
I am not sure what all this data means as yet in terms of stage, grade, receptor status etc. etc.. but continue to have a high stress and emotion state.
I went back to work 4 days after surgery as I felt ok (even though some who knew about my condition found it strange) and intend to work until next line of treatment is known.
That is all for now..

Only a couple weeks away now. Lots of appointments, surgery prep and research. Looking to hear from those who have travelled this path before me. I have sent you a private message. Need help to use abbreviations I see below each lady's profile.
So far: Dx left breast DCIS May 6 2016 Stage 0, Grade 2 wants to remove 45 mm in 2 combined areas biopsied. Very early detection so excellent chances
Lumpectomy scheduled June 17 atthe General with rads to follow this summer. Will here be a summer-fall club?

Hi Cristalle:
There's a button "help with abbreviations" I found when I scrolled below the "jump to forums" option. Hope that helps. good luck with your surgery and rad treatment.
Its good to see some activity in the Ottawa area of this site.

Diagnosed in April 2016 with DCIS and IDC. First lumpectomy was in May 2016. Didn't get clear margins.
Second lumpectomy scheduled for Friday June 17. I'm trying to be positive but it is hard knowing that I will have to have a mastectomy if I don't get clear margins this time.

Chantal I'm on Friday too. Which hospital? This is my first lumpectomy (see above) and he's likely taking off my nipple.
PM me if you like.

Hi Ottawa ladies just checking in now I have my pathology report from my June 17 surgery. The surgeon was able to save my areola and nipple due to the excellent seed localization performed by Dr Seely. The area with suspicious cells was removed in the lumpectomy, and there is a tiny (micro-invasive) area of .8mm that is IDC, not enough to test further. I tested positive for both ER and PR, so am having night sweatsagain which I thought would be over....also insomnia is back since I quit Prometrium.
I have since met two women who had similar operations, but have had no follow-up from social worker, which I need to get to radiation, possible the end of July. I've been invited to the support group at Maplesoft July 13 and intend to go.
Here is the invitation please RSVP to Breast Cancer Action. Support@bcaott.ca
"Hi ladies,
I am excited to introduce Trudy Metcalf -- who will be filling in for me at next week's support group meeting. Prepare to be inspired.
Trudy had a diagnosis of breast cancer in 1989 - a lumpectomy, radiation, and a mastectomy. She has many years of experience in counselling, mostly with teens in the high school setting. Now she works in the field of gerontology as a researcher and university lecturer. Her interest is in the experience of growing old(er). Over the years, Trudy has facilitated a variety of groups, always finding that she learns from the participants and gets back more than she gives.
I hope that anyone who is not away from Ottawa trying to escape the interminable heat, will come next week. The August meeting, August 10th, will also go ahead as previously scheduled.
Please let me know if you can make it. And don't worry if it's a last minute thing -- please come. We are here for you!
Cheers,
Andrea Schade Douglas
p.s. -- same place, same time -- Salon of the Maplesoft Centre (Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation) at 7 pm to 8:30 pm."I am reading up on the different anti-hormone drugs. Meds are very toxic for me and I'd like to go with the mildest one that does the job. Even thinking of ovary removal to stop estrogen production, as my mom died of ovarian cancer.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I got good news today. The pathology report from my June 17 surgery shows the surgical margins are clear. I've been so worried over the last few weeks that I would need to have a mastectomy. I'm so relieved.
I've been referred to the Ottawa Cancer Centre; I know that I'll have radiation therapy and possibly chemotherapy.

I had my appointment at the Cancer Centre yesterday. Turns out, I need chemotherapy too.
