Kicking LEs butt!! Exercise & Self Care Log

It was gym exercise for me today, because we're getting slushy snow/rain mix and it's totally icky outdoors. Treadmill, then weights with trainer, then treadmill again, so I got almost 5 miles in. But I was crabby through every minute, I think! I'm blaming that on the weather.
NatsFan, you are such an inspiration!

hmmmm. the reason I joined a gym 8 years ago was that weather kept interupting my outdoor cycling
I am not good on indoor exercise unless there are other folks to motivate me, confession!

Yes, NatsFan ... you are an inspiration!

You all are inspirations. Anyone that moves is in my good books and anyone that doesn't...well they just need a little more nudging and they are still in my good books.
Yah we gotta encourage one another, It makes exercise more "catchy".
Did my stretches and MLD. I am leaning more towards the lebeds opening over the MLD. The MLD is more boring I have discovered. For the last month I have done one of each, morn then night.Only missed a couple times. Does anyone know which one works better for them? I can't tell the difference as it is really only my trunk that I see a bit of swell.
I think Binney prefers The lebeds.
Oh all you Easterners. I just want you to hop on a train and come out this way. But.... you gotta bring rubber boots. I own 3 pair and that is only for rain.My other boots are for show! After yesterdays beautiful sunny day we have had rain all day. WHATS WITH THAT!!! Well I guess it's better than your snow. You poor dears.

hugz - I prefer Lebed. I'm not convinced that I'm doing the MLD correctly and I do it at times ... but for overall best results ... I prefer Lebed.
0 -
I think Lebed works better for me, and makes me feel better too, but that does require me to do it. I'm more consistent with the MLD, so I do what I can do. I think that I just need to get in the habit of Lebed opening first, then maybe MLD at night? Hugs - do you live on the west coast too - I think I know the answer, but it's late, can't sleep, having effexor quitting symptoms, and can't remember stuff....

Hey - I really appreciate all the love, but I'm really not inspirational - just stubborn!!
Hugz - Lebeds on the beach - sounds lovely!! Sigh.

Did arms and shoulders today.
Admiring my ripped biceps!

Today, lots of driving to meeting a few hours away, and where I am spending the night. No big-time cardio today, but I found a mall so I could do lots of indoor walking this evening. I resolved to do lots of mall laps before even thinking of window shopping at a slower pace, so I got my miles in pretty pronto. Then did some honest-to-gosh shopping, because there were some wonderful sales and I needed some smaller clothing! 5.5 miles in all, but for reasons that escape me, my arm aches tonight, so MLD is definitely to come.

Did the arms ache before or after all the driving ?
0 -
Carol - hooray for buying smaller clothes!! One of those small victories that feels SOOOO good!
40 minute run in the park last evening - got it in just before the sun went down. I'm looking forward to longer days!

Carol, I think your arms ache due to the fact you were going thru racks of cloths with your arms and then you were lugging shopping bags. Maybe that's why. I know this does my persnickety arms in. Oh so happy that you are the incredible shrinking LE girl.
Going for MLD therapy today. Yeah.0 -
I think Purple has diagnosed the aching-arm culprit--driving. Today I drove home, and same problem. When I drive to my kids' city, a 5-6 hour journey, I always wear my sleeve, but I did not wear it yesterday or today (it was in my suitcase) when driving. I wear the sleeve for exercise and other 'activity' and now I guess I'll be defining driving as 'activity.' Hugz, no dice on lugging a lot of shopping bags. I bought only two items, lightweight shirts that fit into one itty bag. Later in the evening, I met up with DH, and he and I went to REI for some fabulous shopping...bought new snowshoes that were on total clearance so a great deal! Our old ones were having binding problems, so now we're all set with modern models that should make us positively float on the snow this weekend! The new shoes are our Valentine gifts to each other--romantic, no?
I didn't get to my daily step-fest until this evening, after driving home in the morning and then working on professional deadlines all day and evening. But I did manage to jog throught the house, and tonight I figured out that I can do 1,000 steps in 6 minutes indoors, listening to the TV as I go, to ward off boredom. This crazy jogging does a pretty good job of raising my heartrate some, too. Anyway, I did 4.7 miles today, half of that my indoor jogging, and the rest just incidental walking during the day.

Carol, good that you figured out what triggered your arm. You'll be armed next time.
I find snowshoeing so much work but like it. It bothers my hip though so I will have to wait the season out.
Asked my LEist which is better self MLD or lebed opening. She thought and then said, I think Lebed because it is based on tai chi and they have done studies on LE with that but there are no studies with self MLD effectiveness. She choose lebed opening over self MLD.
What do you think? I think I would rather do lebeds, Lebeds just seems more exercise like which suits me.0 -
Aha, Carol!
It was the only thing in your post that was ' different'. Carry/wera your sleeve next time you driuve that long- called it !I was thinking of you this AM. I went to amazon and saw a cool looking Denise Austion DVD( for anyone over 40 and a begijnner she is great/ she is 55 yrs young) ANYWAY, I saw this and thought of you:
Have you ever tried that with all your travel? I know you walk the airports, but I had no idea you could purchase exericise dvds that you could juts play on your kindle or table. Very cool I thought.HUGZ
I MUST try the Lebeds more. I simply dont feel like it does anything for me. I dunno'.After my MLD, I immediately have to run to the bathroom and pee. At least that's some sign things are moving. Still, all of it is very subtle. The Lebeds just seems like stretching exercises to me and though I know the sequence is supposed to do something, I dont think it is better than my QIGONG , but hey , that is my opinion ONLY.I would prefer Lebeds to MLD , but I would very be concerned about stopping my MLD. And after my therapist does it, the differnce is marked.0 -
Happy Valentine's Day to all. I have been away from here for awhile dealing with family issues, tamoxifen side effects, and starting a new semester of teaching classes. I just was too tired at end or beginning day to log in. I am now catching up. I did manage to keep up with my MLD, LeBeds, strength training and aerobic. I even went out to the dam Monday and Tuesday Hugz! Too cold today so I have completed an hour on the treadmill.
The exercise science professor where I teach is doing a reasearch project on how much walking people do. Ten from our department got pedometers yesterday that tracks our movement (or lack). We download it once a week. It shows how many steps you have taken and at what times and if aerobic steps or not. If I sit in my recliner for an hour it will show? So far today I have logged 19,000 steps. It has made me get up from my desk at work and move more. I walked up to a drugstore at lunch to get more steps in. 10,000 were on the elliptical this am. I can get so competitive with myself that this may be a good thing.

Becky, welcome back! Missed you lots!
That self-competition sounds very promising--and it's satisfying too when you get that boost to help you move forward. Really nice!
Big hugs,
Binney0 -
I did manage to keep up with my MLD, LeBeds, strength training and aerobic...
Of course you did, Becky ! Good for you. I'm afraid one of those pedometers would put me to shame .0 -
Becky, I am so glad you checked in. I had thought you may have dropped the ball but no, I see you are still chugging away. I also thought that granny may have been taking up some of your time as the older ones do need so much attention. Good to hear you are hanging in there. That exercise study just sounds so cool. I would have totally loved to do something like that and they picked the right person also. I am afraid though you will wear out the pedometer and all your recording will disappear! Yikes!
They had a exercise study out here west and they asked me to participate, I agreed but when they wanted to give me a needle in my arms and I asked to do it somewhere else so they kicked me out. boo hoo.

Hi All, Getting ready to get on treadmill for an hour to get some steps on the pedometer. I have to chart the steps and everyone in the group will see it next week so no pressure! I am then meeting a fellow lympher from our support group to see her new house, out to lunch, and some shopping at some unique shops. I logged 20,000 steps finally yesterday but only aiming for 10,000 today minimally.

Becky, it is good to see your exercise reports again, because you are really getting in the steps, and that's got me inspired to try to do more here. An hour on a treadmill would bore me to tears!
Yesterday I had some serious computer issues that required lots of waiting in ten-fifteen minute intervals, as the machine uninstalled, reinstalled, etc. After the first one, when I kept hovering over the stupid monitor watching its progress, I decided to use the time to get some exercise in. So I ran sprints from my desk to the farthest point away in the house, and back and forth, while the computer got over its issues. That worked so well that later in the day, I set the kitchen timer to do the same thing three more times, for fifteen minutes each. Becky has done this, using an elliptical, and well, it really does break up the exercise and gives a brain break, too. I do turn on the news as I do this sprinting, to help keep it from feeling so monotonous. I plan to do more of this, although at least three times each week I will still do minimum 45-minute cardio of some sort, to make sure I'm building endurance.
Yesterday was a weight training day for me, too, and I jogged a mile on a treadmill after my lifting session. My total for the day was 7.2 miles.
Our snow largely melted in the past few days, but it is now snowing again, and we expect that by tomorrow there should be enough piled up to get out on the snowshoes. I'll take that over treadmills or hallway sprinting any day!

Hey, where is everyone with their exercise and LE care reports? (Hopefully not too lethargic after an overload of Valentine chocolate!)
Today I got my steps in in dribs and drabs...ten minutes here, ten minutes there. 4.8 miles in all. And for whatever reason, the arm aches, so I'll be doing Lebed before bed.

Today is a rest day, I basically did nothing. Supposed to rain this weekend, so even a bike ride isn't looking good.

My knees are not too happy today because I have been stepping up my exercise and may have gone alittle too high impcat. I did however do two 25 min sessions of ' speedwalks' indoors. Long session of MLD tonight.
Carol
That arm is being a real nag- I dont like it!

Weather was gorgeous yesterday and I decided I want to run on a real road with real hills. I made it 3.28 miles in 39 something ... it's the first time I've been able to jog the whole time, no stopping and walking. Was angry today because my knee was hurting.
Met with my trainer and he had no mercy which I didn't want him to ... and I felt better after my time with him. We're doing the metabolic training again when you do not stop ... go from one exercise to another ... box jumps included ... I felt fabulous when I left. Love it when the endorphines kick in. My knee is still a little cranky but better than this morning.
I'll stretch before bed. Do Lebeds if I'm swollen. I still have on my gloves and I don't know how much I'm swollen.

Got in 16,500 steps in yesterday--14,000 of them aerobic. Trying again for 20,000 today. Will let you know tonight if I make it or not. Have a good movement day everyone!

I've been finding you all a little intimidating lately, and because of some pretty severe pain issues, haven't been able to get in much exercise lately.
0 -
Hang in there,Linda. Back off if that is what your body is saying .
This too shall pass!

Thank you Purple!

Linda, we have all had our down times when exercise would not have been a wise idea. The best part of your post is that it suggests that you regret missing exercise, and that in turn means you are so, so likely to step right back in when you can!
