ptdreamers. Yup, I do indeed live on the "WET coast" We are both rained on. By the bucket. No wonder you did Leslie indoors.

I can see the 4th July fireworks from my deck. Very close to USA. Are you "Sleepless in Seattle?"

Today was weights-in-the-gym day for me, and I also did treadmill walking + elliptical high-heartbeat intervals, about 4 miles in all.  The sun came out today, for a glimpse of the season to come, and it makes me look forward to lots more outdoor walking!

Hugz, I'm not fond of walking in the rain.  In the snow, yes, but not in the rain.  My steps today were all indoors, so I'm no hero!  And I'm petrified of ever falling off the exercise wagon, and that propels me to do the steps nearly every single day, even if it's just walking as fast as I can back and forth in the house. Actually, that method works pretty well, if I'm watching and listening to an interesting show on the telly.

Hugz, I'm about a hundred miles from Seattle on the Olympic peninsula. I can see fireworks also on the 4th. They set them off right below us on the water.

PT, spent my younger days at the Ho forest and Forks on the OLY peninsula. Really nice area. We do a fair amount of camping on the WA coast, camano island, whidby island, Long beach, port townsend. So pretty and green of course. ( how couldn't it be with all that rain) I love the Olympic mountains. DH thinks we can see them on a clear day far off in the distance.

If Carol is reading she would be happy to know that your peninsula gets a good gardening/ growing season. I think you are one zone warmer than us. My dafffy's have been up for a good two weeks now. You must be ahead of us. Oh, I had two tulips bloom two weeks ago. That is way to early! Have you been to the tulip festival in La Conner just north of you? It is stunning, Like a mini holland.

make sure you get some beach strolls in. The sea is so restorative.

hugz - Glad to know you've heard of ART.  I hadn't.  I asked if it was similiar to myo-fascial release and he said a bit.  Interesting about the sciatic nerve.  *shakes head*  It really does stink to get old.  Undecided

Purple - thank you.  I'm going to watch more closely and see.

    ______

I didn't do much today exercise-wise but I did go to my first ever NHL hockey game with my brother.  Lots of fun.  Didn't do much walking but did a lot of laughing.  Laughing  There is good therapy in that.  Totally fallen off my good diet plan today.  But it was worth it.  Will hit gym hard tmrw.  Probably no weights, though.  Lebed before bed.

    Carol

The YMCA  LIVESTRONG program contacted me again and the V.P. of the YMCA wants to meet with me.  I would LOVE your permission to give them the  new SUSO handout that you and others worked  on creating for exercise  trainers.  Please let me know if it's okay.  You can bet I will reference the site !

Purple, I sure hope that they are serious about expanding the LE element of their program.

Today I walked about 5 miles, outdoors with my son as my walking companion. We compete for steps walked each week but live 5 hours apart, so we never walk together. He's in his 20s and very fit, but I usually have more free time than he has, so I always win the weekly tally, which amuses me to no end. Until today, he had no idea I could walk at his pace--he was assuming I was walking for several hours each day (not!!).  This was a very fun walk, indeed.

I 'll be sure to let all of you know, Carol ... So far, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Sounds like  a great competetive walk!

Did a little run/walking today. A cold front is moving through, so didn't go far or long.

Still skittish about getting back on the yoga mat. Hand acts up at a moment's notice. I'll have to start a serious butt-yoga practice. "Got lymphedema and can't do downward facing dog? Do some buttasanas! "

Carol, what good way to get in your steps. A wee bit of a competition with the kids even though your son if so far away. It's good to be connected in anyway you can.

Did my first ever 6 miles on the beach. Used a different pair of walking shoes, now my arches hurt so bad, they aren't used to that lenght of a walk and they tightened up. Should of had my runners. epsom salting my feet as we speak.

Any ideas to loosen the foot muscles. Hurts to walk, should of increased my walk from 3 to 4 miles not 6, weekend warrior doesn't clearly work for me. Need to remind myself to start out slow and build up. Did lebeds on sunny beach, was a day to remember, pretty sunset.

Hey, thanks to Tina we have had this thread going strong for just over a year this March 7th. It has really helped me a lot. Most of all I like the fact we can encourage one another but not get overly competitive. We are at such different levels but have the same goal in mind. To improve our health a bit at a time. You are my exercise buddies. You pick me up when I fall. THANKS ALL! Thanks Tina if you are reading.

Hugz, you are so right about our one-year thread-a-versary!  Tina was a wonderful friend to all of us when she started this.  I think she does pop in once in a while, so perhaps she'll see this.

I drove 6 hours today, home from a weekend with family (including***grandchildren***).  I stopped only twice, once for 5 and another time for 15 minutes (very, very bad I know) and I have concluded that the reason driving aches the arm is from not moving the body.  On my drive on Friday, I experimented by wearing my Solaris Tribute while driving, which prevented the aches, much better than when I wear my compression sleeve and gauntlet.  Only on Saturday, an area around my shoulder blades on my LE side was very tender, and I'm left wondering if wearing the Tribute sent fluid there, although this does not happen when I sleep in it every night. But that day, I wore it 6 hours driving + all night afterward while sleeping.

So today I wore the normal day sleeve, and sure enough, my arm aches after the drive.  Ick.  Lesson learned is that I need to stop and walk several times during long drives. I know this rule and ignore it regularly because gee, I want to spend every last minute with the little ones and not budget added drive time to allow for walks.  Or, an alternate solution is to never drive. because when DH drove us recently 8 hours a day, two days in a row, I had zero issues.  I think that means that as a passenger, there's a lot more fidgeting and moving around, not locked into one position.  And DH says I have a death grip on the steering wheel.  This weekend I traveled solo, so no choice on driving.

Anyway, enough musing about driving-related LE discomforts and solutions. I did walk a bit this morning before leaving, 3 miles with daughter and little ones, but that was pretty much it for the day.  Back to the exercise routine tomorrow, and some MLD before bed tonight!

Nibbana, I love your yoga style!

Carol, if am sitting in the passenger seat I can't move my LE right arm much because of the side window. I start to get a ache after a couple hours. But if I drive then I can reach forward, pump up and stretch out sideways if no one is sitting next to me so this works for me. Also moving the steering wheel exercises my arm.I haven't tried driving at the wheel for more than a couple hours though.

What bugs me, is when I am in a meeting (two hours, twice a week) and I am confined to a chair and my arm is bent at a 90 degree angle, just sitting there. The last half hour I get a bit arm achy and I should just get up and go pump it/ deep breath it out in the women's can. Two hours is my limit sitting still. I need to move otherwise I think I get a pile up of LE fluid due to inactivity.

The 2 and 3 day seminars I sit at a few times a year nearly kill me as they are 8am -5pm. I get a fluid back up i n the trunk/arm and as I sit there listening to the seminar, in the back of my mind I am thinking that I am doing LE damage because I am not moving much. I try to go to the pool after those seminars or walk it out.

    anyone else notice this?

Hugz, interesting. My LE is in my left arm, so I have better arm movement if I'm the passenger (of course, avoiding punching the driver!).  But I think for me, it's more the fact that as passenger, I'm changing body position a lot, and just moving a lot more than I can as a driver.

I teach seminars for a living, and long before I had LE, I have always invited people to stand up, pace around...whatever they need to do if they have back or other issues that make sitting all day a challenge. People are almost never asked to sit immobile in chairs all day on their jobs, but we ask them to do that when they come to training, so the facilitator really should be explaining that it's ok to get up and walk around or stand or whatever at any time during the day.  Tell your seminar facilitator that for health reasons, you will be moving around a bit, and then choose a seat near the back of the room so you feel comfortable doing so.

I sit only during the lunch break and even when working at home, writing training, I probably sit no more than an hour during any day, as I work at a standing desk.  I sure do agree that sitting invites LE trouble.

Thanks Carol, Yes I will have to get up and move around. I just hate causing a disturbance but I should because in the end its my body I have to deal with and why not prevent a flare if you can. I promise I will be more mobile. Those long days sitting I will commit to treating my self better. Thanks.

It was a good fitness day for me.  Morning jog, then treadmill time at the gym, plus normal walking about, for 5.8 miles. While at the gym, weight training with the trainer, and I'm doing quite well with the weight progression, which makes me feel like I'm moving forward despite the LE. Over the weekend I was lifting and playing with the grandkids without worry, and that is exactly the point of lifting weights!

Or, an alternate solution is to never drive. because when DH drove us recently 8 hours a day, two days in a row, I had zero issues

Then I dont think it's exactly from (just) not moving. You hit the nail on the head though when you talked about being'locked' and also the grip on the steering wheel.

I noticed that grocery shopping bothers me. At first, I thought it was the lifting of items, carrying bags etc ..   but then , I noticed shopping for an outfit for my granddaughter made my arm ache. (WTH?!)  I finally realized it was my 'locked' grip on the shopping cart!  I am sure being more' posture aware' can help me in this situation.

In HUGZ case, I am betting it is being 'locked' in that 90 degree angle...all the same thing really.  I guess the point is, I dont think it is simple inertia. I think we need to be mindful of our postures, grips etc ...just as we are mindful of form when it comes to lunges !

    Does this make sense ?

Perfect sense purple.  I can set off a flare by playing too much Angry Birds... It's about the time and the tension.  I've started knitting and crocheting again as its an excellent light exercise and it reminds me to move while I'm watching TV or in a meeting/seminar.  You reach for the yarn, turn the needles, and generally fidget a bit.  It helps. Can't knit and drive tho., passeng yes, drive no.  I also need to avoid big projects that get heavy.  No afgans or sweaters!  But socks and gauntles?  Yes.

Purple, You are dead on with the shopping cart. I find as mine gets heavier to push my arms get a bit more achy.

Rolling straight is no problem but starting a full grocery cart from a dead stop or turning a corner is work on the arms whether you have tennis/golfers elbow or LE.

Once the cart gets heavy I use my body to help push it. I lean over the handles when pushing straight and I use my body weight to help turn corners. I also position my hands widest on the handlebar for better leverage.

Going thru racks of cloths does me in after a while. I try not to touch and move the garments on the hangers unless I really like the item. It's such a habit to move the hanger to have a better look at the garment though.

I always use a shop cart not a little basket you carry in you arms in the clothing stores. If I pile cloths on my arm and carry them around then I am in big achy trouble.

Yup ....golfers/ tennis elbows both arms, chronic for 25 years with LE in right arm. I have learned how to make shopping work. NOTHING will stop a girl from shopping! :)

Yes the 90 degree angle in the arm stationary, will do me in every time. Must move.

Nice day.Trying to get extra walks in. My blisters have healed and so....onward...MARCH ...123!
4 miles yesterday and will try 4 today. Not 6 like the other day. I bunned myself in.

    UGH!  Not here ...
Snow here in Western Ma.  but I  was doing an indoor video and they started doing some  wide and  *Fast* shoulder rolls and OUCH!  My old rotator cuff injury kicked in ... on the LE arm so I wimped out during the warm up Yell

Oh, you are so right, hugz- LE will NOT make me stop my shopping  !  Wink

Before my LE  dx , one of the things I did , for the very first time was to start jewelry making. I often wonder if unwittingly working with my fingers  so " tightly'  contributed to the LE in my hand . Who the hey knows.  I have not done it sonce, I know that much.   I have  a list of about  a half dozen things I wonder about   ...   none are the well known   " NO BP cuff, no needle pricks", not that I  actually warned against anything!

Purple - It's so hard to know what causes this cr*p.  I had my first flare after several hours of Angry Birds.

I started the knitting and crocheting in tiny doses.  5 minutes here, 10 minutes there.  Now I can work for quite a while and don't have a problem.

So...who's getting some activity into their day?

My goal today was just to get the 10,000 steps in, and I did about 600 more when all was said and done.  All indoors, so nothing exciting.  But it was movement.

Nibbana, that's great! Do you do shoulder presses? I do not, but instead do scaptions, which I started early on after the bmx to help avoid hunching. Also seated or bentover rows, triceps and biceps like you do.
