    Wow, Dawne....that is quite intriguing.

I've just lost 25 lbs so I  hate the thought of adding so many calories to my diet, but ...  hmmm.

I have also heard all the flavonoids are good for LE.'
    THX for the tip.

Purple, Are you the girl on WW or what did you do to lose 25lb? My adrenal function is so bad that I lose slow and gain fast within days. If I eat something bad I know it will show up the next day or two on the scales, even with my walking. I am thinking I probably should be walking 2 hours a day instead of 3-4 times a week for 45 min. I need to get that pedometer back on.

Dawne, Who knows what works in the LE game. I think it is wonderful if you have found something dietary that works. There are not many studies on nutrition and LE are there? I hear Horse chestnut and Pycnogenol(sp) the supplements are decent at reducing LE. There may have been a study on the horse chestnut, can't quite remember.

Also the brazil nuts have selenium in them and I think that is good for LE. Maybe it is Binney that eats them, not sure. I do know that it is hard to find a brazil nut (now called Amazonian nut) that isn't rancid tasting. I use to buy them but they don't stay fresh on the shelf long at the store. I was throwing out too many and they are not cheap. Stopped buying them. They are my favorite. They come from rainforest so they are pretty much organic.

With nuts you do not want to eat them if they are off tasting. This rancidity is carcogenic in it's self because our bodies don't know how to process it. Make sure your nuts are fresh so you can get full benefit from them. Walnuts are so good, lots of omegas in them. I have a dish of them out but have to limit myself. Walnuts and almonds are great soaked in water in the fridge overnight and drained. Tastes fresh off the tree. I you do this, use them up asap because you don't want bacteria growing on them due to them being wet. Keep in fridge. I try to use them up in two days. They digest better soaked. Yes I am a NUTTY person too!

I have been off dairy and wheat products for a few months but "fall of the wagon" weekly. When I was strictly off dairy/wheat/ processed foods and strickly only organics  for 2 yrs a few years ago I felt soooo good. I had energy to burn. The bonus is if you are totally off dairy you will find your sweat doesn't smell. I didn't have to use deoderant at all. Read your food packages carefully for dairy or wheat. End of story.Wink I just gotta smarten up on my eating choices, need to duct tape my mouth when the goodies come out.

Sunny and a walk is in order today. No excuses for me. COME ON GIRLS, GET THE LEAD OUT!

Got that walkies in. Was nice hearing the waves splash at the edge of the low tide. Twas sunny until right after my walk and then the rain came as I drove home. Sun is a good motivator for me. If I see the sun peeping thru clouds I dash out before it rains. I dislike raingear and try to avoid wearing it as much as posible.

Couldn't find my pedometer so I tried to buy one. 3 places didn't have it. grrrrrr.Oops wrong thread.

hugz - I've been phasing out dairy for a couple of years ... cheese was my last holdout.  The first two weeks were horrible ... I dreamed about oreo cookies (which I haven't eaten in years), ice cream, sour cream, swiss cheese for the first two nights.  It was brutal.  Interesting about the body smell.  I have been eating a lot of garlic so I don't think I smell too good Wink but that's ok.  LOL.

I've read that about nuts ... to be careful with them.  Thank you for the reminder.

I spent time with my trainer this afternoon and we do the metabolic training again (moving without stopping from one exercise to another) but today we didn't do the bike at the end.  I didn't sleep last night ... not sure the why but that happens to me occasionally.

I'm working on getting in my water ... that is a constant problem for me.

Will do Lebed before bed.  Cool (it rhymes).  Laughing

Hugz, we get a lot of snow where I live; it's lake-effect snow fueled by all the warm, moist air rising from Lake Michigan.  Sometimes the snow starts to feel almost claustrophobic, but I wouldn't trade snow for Pacific northwest rain and drizzle! You're a real trooper to get out and walk in between raindrops. I find rain to be absolutely un-motivating.

I worry about herbal or other supplements marketed for lymphedema symptoms. Research on anything related to lymphedema is so inconsistent in scope and quality that experts can't even agree on a lot of the basics, like diagnosis methods and standards. I just can't imagine that there's been any study of horse chestnut or even selenium that was rigorous enough to know whether there's a real and repeatable benefit.

A few brazil nuts, no problem and I keep them in my freezer. But I steer clear of concentrated supplement selenium. I do love my fruits, veggies, nuts, olive oil, cherry juice, and green tea, though--all reputed to be anti inflammatory, which is appealing when you consider that LE is a disease of inflammation (I think!).  In normal dietary quantity, can they help my LE?  I don't know, but they can't hurt and (except the bitter-tasting green tea) they taste really great! (I drink the tea anyway...3 cups a day!)

Dawne-Hope, my daughter had to forego all dairy while nursing both her babies, because  they had cow-milk allergies as infants and it went straight through her natural milk. And she swears that Oreos not only have no dairy, they're totally vegan!  Not that I think you should go back to Oreos. They really cannot be healthy!  But dairy--apparently not! It does make one wonder what's in there that looks like cream.  Maybe you made your diet transition harder than it needed to be!!  Oh, and wow, another great workout you did today!

carol - It's frightening that Oreos are totally vegan!  Surprised

I hadn't thought of keeping nuts in the freezer.  Thanks, Carol and Victoria!

    Yes -

The WW took the 25 off.  It works.

I have been interested in horse chestnut for yrs due to poor circulation, but I am concerned about SEs.  Even so, I think it is a shorter term fix if at all.

I dont know if Binney eats the Brazil nuts , but I have seen her post about ppl. having 3  a day.  Perhaps I'll look for some.  If I could limit myself to 3 , it might be okay , but more than that would cause me to gain weight.

purple - Not intending to ... I don't need to ... but one of the unintended consequences of dropping dairy and grains is that I've lost weight.  My tummy is flatter than it's been in 15 years.  I've dropped a pant size ... so it is possible to eat nuts and not gain weight ... if you compensate by not eating something else.

Purple, I can't testify to that at all. Neither that nor fresh pineapple (bromelein) makes much difference that I can notice. But then I've never made any kind of self-study out of it. I like them both, so I don't much care. Try it for a few days or a week and let us know what you think!

Here' a new thought from Therapist Jane, my LEist. She says when doing my deep abdominal breathing I should do a couple of breaths as usual (standing), then lean left and do a couple more, then lean right and do a couple more. (Not so many that you hyperventilate and fall over!Frown) That helps to activate the deep abdominal lymphatics so you get a better pumping action. I do it with my arms over my head to add some skin stretch on the sides. Nice!Cool
Binney, learning lots from therapy again!

Thanks , Binney.  I have tried the pineapple- have not noticed.  Personally, I pay more attention to anecdotal research lately so I like getting as many tips as I can.

I will also try the ' lean- to ' stretch and breathe! Laughing

So, on the exercise front: lots of steps and miles these past few days.  Almost nine miles yesterday, and 6 ish so far today, plus today was weight workout day at the gym. I am so in love with house-pacing and house jogging while watching/listening to TV!  Today I strapped on the heartrate monitor, just to make sure I wasn't imagining getting some cardio benefit when jogging indoors, and truly my heartrate can go up and stay up while running little laps in the house. I'll be happy when nice weather arrives and I can walk outside, but for now, indoors suits me well.  And I do get nice outdoor walking or snowshoeing on weekends, with DH who knows all the trails.  I plan to do some MLD and Lebed this evening before bed.

Finally nice enugh to do a little of the only exercise the doctor approved... a slow gentle walk on flat terrain. .5 miles in the 55 degrees.  Or as my vet friends would say"Ten more days of "crate rest.""

Cindy, good girl!Laughing Down! And at least you're not wearing a pet-cone collar.

I'm still corking, though I took a day or two off because I was miffed with having a lower leg wrapped (grrrr!) But walking and jogging are great for legs while wrapped, so I'm back at it. Reduces swelling and fibrosis and boosts the spirits, too.

Hoping you'll soon be "right as rain," Cindy, and back to everything you enjoy.

    Be well,
    Binney

I've been continuing with aerobics daily ( mostly the fast walk type/ 30 mins) but I believe it is causing some swelling as I notice my sleeve feels tighter shortly after.

Dont want to give up  this type of exercise, ESP. with my pre existing conditions.

I think I may  go with just qigong or else lebeds today, but I need to fel the blood really flow - if you know what I mean!  Not sure why this seemed to happen so ' suddenly' after mos. of exercising w/out noticing this at all.

In any case, I do have an appt with the LPT this week, so we'll see.

Temperature changes.  Barometric pressure?  Working a little harder at exercise? Evil gremlins? Eating different and thus retaining more fluids (this is the first one to get me)

Purple, I rarely swell after activity (it does happen once in a while), but I often get an arm ache that's quite bothersome.  I cannot figure out cause and effect, though. Seems that sometimes I can work up quite a lather and no ache afterward; other times with less (or more, or the very same) exertion, my arm aches.  Wearing the sleeve/gauntlet consistently, not changing anything else I can think of, but it's just not predictable. So frustrating, isn't it?  We want to exercise (or just do life's daily activities) and to be able to figure out how to protect our LE areas, but my gosh, it's such a moving target. And just to make it more difficult to predict when we might flare and thus how to avoid it, the weather seems to play a huge role. I'm aching today and the only explanation I can come up with is that the weather is funky and maybe barometric pressure is punishing me.

Yesterday I did a 6 mile forest hike with DH and friends, through some snow, but not enough to make snowshoes useful.  We were in a beautiful park in Ohio, following a very up-and-down hilly bridle trail that also had us hopping stones across a creek, crossing the same creek by walking on logs like balance beams, taking leaps across the creek...basically we were crazy to do it, but it was outrageous fun. (The creek was shallow..I'm not THAT crazy!)  And my recently-acquired waterproof hiking boots (that I now use with the snowshoes) proved to be absolutely waterproof, so sometimes I walked right through that very meadering creek to avoid stepping in ice-covered stones, and it was really, really a hoot.  We all felt like kids.

I had a bad exercise day yesterday too. My hand is very swollen Cry

I was doing bench presses and thought, "Gee, why does this feel so heavy today?" I had 40 pounds loaded on my ez curl bar instead of 35. So, I think that extra five pounds made my hand grumpy.

I really, really have to do some more exercises that involves legs and feet, and CARDIO! Just got to get my heart rate up. Think I'll take up barefoot trail running. Laughing

I got myselt in trouble by upping my weights too fast and lifting every time I went to the gym....arm did not swell (mine doesn't for some reason) but had terrible pain at night.  Solution was to ease off and then have a trainer keep me in line and going slower with increases

maybe take it easy today is best

    Yes.

I sometimes wonder if it's just not the exercise at all...so many variables in life.

Sure sounds like you had some fun outdoor 'exercising, carol" Sealed

Sorry to hear some others are also experienceing little flares .

Hopefully, we will all get this straightened out soon.

    JUST A TIP-

I went to Macys today and got a compression tank for $9.10 .  They run very small.  Worth taking a look at their clearance.

Well, I dusted off my Vibram FiveFinger Spydiron LSs and went out for a little over a mile walk. Went out to a nice semi-urban park with a trail that follows a river. Feet feel great, it takes time to learn to strike with the ball first and not the heel.

Nibbana, I tried those vibrams but for some reason they made me trip over my big toe. Not sure what that was about. I just loved the concept though. I may try another minimal type runner with a toe box, I love the fact that they are so light.

Carol, your day playing in the creeks and forest made me go right into fantasy world. I pictured you and your friends as Hansel and Gretal in the big woods. I know you would never get lost because you could always unroll yards of bandages to trail behind you. Breadcrumbs would be too many calories. :)

Hugz, very funny--leaving a trail of short-stretch instead of breadcrumbs!  Speaking of Hansel and Gretel, I am on vacation, attending an artisan bread school this week, starting in a few hours. I've done this before --now at level III --so I know they have these huge commercial ovens, and every time I'm standing in front of one, I think 'Hansel and Gretel.'  Funny you should bring that up today!
