Hi ladies - its been a long while since I've been here - close to 50 pages or so.. I have, with a combination of 3 different pain meds, got the breast nerve pain in control (pain doc doesn't agree). I can walk and not keel over in pain anyway. I need your help on what to do first.. I will have to take it slow.. I have no trainers, or YMCA available to me - what I do will have to be here on the top of the mountain, where we live. I am so out of shape... Any ideas for me - where to start and how "slow" is slow???

Gma, that is good to hear about your improvement!

maybe consider yoga? You may be able to find online help with suggestions. Yoga is so gentle, or is as gentle as you like. The Arthritis society even promotes it and may have some moves on their website?

I know my logo PBS station as a series of a yoga person (woman) doing it from a chair and is specially designed for folks with challenges!

good luck, If I can find the link on the above, I will post it but best of luck, yeah for feeling better!

Were we talking about band? I played flute/piccolo in the Marine Corps. Ok, enough of that.

One thing about my school is that many of the buildings have the study areas on the second floor. I climb over 20 sets of stairs most days.

My new fitness goals, 100 sets of stairs a week!

Stairs are good. I have hit the 2 week taper with fewer miles each week. Only had 3 miles on the docket tonight. The weather is perfect here for a 45 minute twilight walk. ..and done :)

I love this thread! I'm glad it was started! I was feeling very nervous about exercise when I was diagnosed with LE. I'm glad to have found this community. It is definitely motivating me! It is great to hear about women taking control of their lives.

    WAY TO GO!! :D

Tishfin, the women in the LE forum are incredibly supportive. And the frustration that comes with LE means we need all the support we can get! This exercise thread is motivating and fun, too.

I continue to be held hostage by my work, which has me at my keyboard for long, long days. I do get to the gym twice a week for weight lifting and make sure I do proper cardio those days, but otherwise, it seems to be just getting lots of steps in to make sure my days are not a total activity bust. Been traveling, too, which doesn't help matters, especially since recent travels have been by car, so no airport walking during layovers.

My best fitness news of the day is that my daughter found my missing fitbit! I lost it while in playful pursuit of her son, who is a mighty speedy crawler! Now I just wait until she can mail it back to me, and I'll have my exercise 'conscience' back to nudge me into exercise action.

Today I'm in Chicago for some medical stuff, no big deal, but the location is just one block from fabulous Michigan Avenue. The weather is gorgeous, so I plan to spend an hour or two doing some speedy walking up and down the avenue before starting my 3-hour drive home. Maybe with a few stops for window gawking!

Have a great exercise day, everyone. Laural, are you doing some mental psych-up for your big event?

No psych up needed, Carol. Every mile of the Columbus Nationwide Marathon has a patient hero present, along with 100 bands and entertainers on the side lines of the 26.2 mile course. Mile 12 is the Angel Mile, decorated by the families who have lost a child this year. After so many solitary training miles, these 13.1 miles will fly by. There will be several blood cancer patients along the course, which is what Team in Training is all about. My daughter and I have raised over $6500.00 to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society which in itself gives me encouragement (and hope) that someday they will find a cure for all cancers. You can visit our page at http://pages.teamintraining.org/soh/columbus13/teamalway . I got my bib number today and Corral assignment so no turning back now.

I haven't had time to post but week before last my LE therapist took me on a rugged 8 mile hike in the Smoky Mountains up on a rock at the top of a mountain (Charlie's Bunion). It was awesome! I have never really hiked and was not sure I could do it but she believed in me! The park closed the next day due to shutdown. I logged 25,000+ steps that day. Exercise has not been as much fun since! The 8 miles is part of the Appalachian Trail.

At the top of the mountain. Unfortunately fog blocked a lot of the views.

Becky, how inspiring!! What fun. I LOVE the name Sweat Heifer Creek Trail. The fog doesn't block your smile, or the view for that matter. Amazing!!!

So Becky....I guess you've got your sights on that little jaunt to Katahdin? (Bet Laural's up for it...let's form an LE team to do the AT!)

    Seriously, BRAVA, as Binney says!!

Having met your wonderful therapist, I know that she's a fitness machine. You are such an adventuress to hike with her!

What a great place to hike, Becky. My daughter did the AT for a week and loved it. I prefer day hikes with a hotel bed for the night as opposed to tent backpacking...getting old I guess.

Becky, love your pics but best of all I love the joy that is on your face. I just can tell that this hike may have you hooked into mountaineering.

We have the sierra club here and they do day hikes all over. Usually the club meets in the morn and returns late afternoon. I bet you would love something like that. Doesn't adding variety to your indoor exercise program shake it up a bit. Almost gives a new lease on life! I love being in the trees and my chiropractor says that being in the trees is way more healthy. He said something about more oxyegen or something like that but I can't remember.

I like the fact that you are walking with poles to. My balance is not the greatest and having those arms up high is a good idea for LE.

Anyone that hasn't met Becky yet, needs to know she is practically our mascot. She indeed is our biggest loser. Would you mind sharing how many pounds you have lost now Becky? You rock girl :)

Last few days I have been doing fairly long dog walks.. For the last few months I was trying to teach pup leash walking and it slowed up my walks so much. I finally gave up and have trained her on the dog halter system in about 3 days total. (wears a halter on her nose) and it has literally put leash pulling to a stop. Walks are really fun now. I can walk her holding the leash very lightly and she doesn't pull. Love it. Pup is my walking buddy now.

Carol, today, I am taking pup for a beach walk across the border where they allow dogs. You would have seen that area when we walked on the pier. We have had dynamite sunsets at the beach this last week. Going to be a sunny 65 today.

Alright girls! Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot...........go, go, go!

So along with ordering myself a new sleeve from the Solidea people and getting out for a daily brisk walk, I have been doing lots of research on different form of self care. Has anyone heard of the dry brushing technique? Or "rebounding" jumping on a mini tramp?? Have any of you tried doing these techniques? Do they have any merit ? Anyone have results? I'm trying to be a proactive as possible with all of this.

gma, I have been thinking of you, start slow, really slow and do from there.

I need to find the chair yoga thing and send to you! I think that a great start...and the breathing is helpful to me also....oooohhhhhhmmmmm

Tishfin, here's an earlier thread about rebounders:

    http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/64/topic/767114?page=1#post_2326443

People with leg LE tend to find rebounding especially helpful, but as you'll see when reading that thread, women here find it helpful too.

Dry-brushing isn't really a substitute for self-MLD, but if it's done slowly in the direction of your MLD routine it probably won't hurt. It's restful, just personally don't need another routine to add to my day (sigh!)

    Be well!

GMA,I just looked up Chai yoga. Do check it out. Some of the exercises are just what might be good for you. There is one just to prevent arthritis in the hands.;...squeezing them

good luck and hope it helps

hugz--i have lost 75 Lbs but have been kind of stuck for awhile. But at least not gaining. Have 20 more to lose. I am going to a state park with a friend tomorrow to do a 4 mile trail but not filled with rocks to climb and have to find footholds for like the last hike! It is steep though. So glad cooler weather is here. Everybody have some fun moving tomorrow. I think of all of you when I am walking.

Becky. Wow that is just so fantastic. I got to get it together with the program and lose to. Hike sounds great. I don't mount climb much but I love slightly hilly hikes if the trail is maintained. I have a bum ankle and have to be careful not to turn it so the trail conditions are crucial to me. The walking poles are great to keep ankle accidents to a minimum.

Carol, we had a campfire across the bay, (USA side)tonight. It was such a good sunset. Thought of our walk together in August. So glad we met.

hugs, I am so glad we met, too! I love being able to visualize the walks you tell us about.

I am a work prisoner again today, so not sure how much honest exercise I will get. Yesterday I went to the gym for weights and cardio. Tomorrow I will get airport walking in, fortunately!

Did the hike with a friend--got 5 miles in total. The walking poles really help with balance and seem to help my LE. At least it does not hurt it. I always feel so virtuous after a long walk. The dam where I used to walk is under construction so hard to go there as now it is all concrete and flat. But the stairs are still there!

I applaud everyone's exercise. I have to confess, I've been 'secretly' tread milling. I can't even begin to keep up with some of you but I am doing it religiously. 25 minutes every other day. Every other day because if I do it every day, one of my knees isn't happy. Every other day seems to keep it content. I am trying to lose weight and get in better shape. Oh and I've also reduced my caloric intake. So, we shall see. Meanwhile, I enjoy 'walking' with you all. Becky, I've thought of trying the poles......but we live on a busy road and to be honest, you may have to take your life in your hands to go for a walk most times of the day. That's why I wanted a t.m.

Marple. Why you sneaky thing you.....SOOOOO.....your a closet treadmiller. Finally had to come out of the closet with it huh? Just couldn't resist telling us huh? Well...here is what I think of your secret tread milling....................................WHOOOOO HOOO...YIPPIE........YEAH....YOU GO FOR IT SISTA!

I have emptied my food bins and I am trying to go dairy/wheat free and trying to get off coffee after being on it since about July. I will let you gals know when you need to scrape me off the floor in the morning! (Would insert a smiley emotion if I could find one here on the threads, what happened to them?)

Carol, I envision you going in circles and more circles and more circles at the airport. :) keep it up.

Becky. Although you can't go to the dam it is sure nice that you found an alternative. BRAVO.

Taking out the cute little stinker for a walk now. Must sign off before I lose my interest and flip on the TV

I do believe that closet tread mill is fine....got to start somewhere

me,I learned to ride bike when I was in my 30's, too embarrassed to practice on my street so used to hide in a parking lot to practice and fall off (oh yeah, fire station across the street and not wanting to let the cute little guys know how bad I was)

ps, I learned to bike, ended up doing 75 mile fund raising thing and rode every weekend for years...then got into spin when my balance got bad

    next thing for you....who knows!....

Proud, Wow good for you to venture out and learn that bike. Not only do I ride a bike but in my younger years I learned how to unicycle. My dad made us a tandem too. I really need to get on my wheels again but we have so many hills here.

Just finished my dog walk, twas nice.
