Kicking LEs butt!! Exercise & Self Care Log

It was snowing here today and yesterday...not sticking except in the corners of roofs and grass, but pretty anyways. I am on a rest week this week, just stretching and doing gentle exercise. I lost one toe nail (a common problem when doing lots of long walks), so going easy, but otherwise waiting to get back out on the sidewalk soon. My daughter just signed up for a full Marathon in Toledo in April. Wish I had her youthful energy0 -
Laural, I see that you lost one toe nail !.........Do you want me to come over and find it! Just a bit of pun. ha ha. Your snow sounds so pretty but I don't want any of that yet.
Just back from a sunny glorious fall walk. Leaves are still on trees, colorful. Did lebed opening and breathing exercises. I am trying to keep my engine going. Stretched also.
Carol, I do have the sibiling to the pup you saw last summer but my relatives are raising it for me.I was walking my sis dog. They looked like the odd couple walking beside eachother 15lb versus 65lbs
Oh that sounds so exciting to be walking with someone from the forum. You sure do get around Carol. I really hope the weather was nice to you.0 -
hugz, I do get around, true, and it's wonderful to be able to see parts of the country that I would not visit if not for work. It's my consolation prize for having a profession that obligates me to put up with airport security and long days of air travel. I also am lucky to get lots of frequent flyer miles, which lets me go where I want to when there's time for some personal travel. I'm looking forward to retiring in a few years, to put an end to the nutty constant work travel, but I will miss the fun parts of it!
I'm in Finland, and my LE forum friend is Nitocris, who is the most amazing LE information researcher I know. And, like everyone else I've met from this forum, a warm, wonderful human being. There must be something about having to deal with this stupid D-I-Y lymphedema that brings out the best in people. What's that saying--if life gives you lemons, make lemonade? I'm lucky to have met quite a few of our forum friends, either because of my travel opportunities, or at the two LE conferences I've attended. And every single one has prompted me to say 'wow...'
Hugz, your mis-matched dogs must have been quite a comical sight when you were walking them! My dog weighs 45 lbs and when he's too excited to give a whit about his training, I get quite the resistance work when he's on his lead. I'm the guilty party for not following through on the training, so I can only blame myself! I'll bet your walk was more disciplined and didn't end up being the dogs walking the human!0 -
So, today my daughter posted a thank you to our supporters...makes me very proud to be her momma for these past 19 years.
"When I look at pictures from this weekend, I see stolen moments. I see my mom and I together, healthy, beautiful, and strong, and I remember all of the days when things didn’t look like that. I remember hearing the numbers doctors put on the number of days my mom had left. It’s only because of new treatments and support from people like our teammates through Team in Training: Dayton, OH that my mom and I get to keep sharing new things together. I don’t take these stolen moments lightly. I am aware of them both as they are happening and when I remember memories I never imagined I would get to have. Thanks for all of the support, everyone!"
Our next adventure looks to be working at a camp for children with special needs this summer, me as an OT and her as a unit leader.0 -
Laural, you have so many reasons to be proud of her! That's lovely and incredibly touching.0 -
Carol. How fantastic that you are with Nitocris. Yes I do love all her research she posts. I wish she would come on more often but no doubt she is busy. I know you two are talking a blue streak, making up for lost time.
Yes my dog walk is disciplined because with 2 dogs walking on the same side you have to pay attention that one doesn't cross in front of you, making you trip on your LE side. They do look cute.
laural, You and your daughter are making a difference in peoples lives and you make a powerful couple willing to conquer whatever creeps up. kudos to you special people.0 -
Laura, congrats on raising a terrific and giving daughter.
and thanks to her for being the thoughtful person, we need more like her! T in T is a great program0 -
Logging in a really fast 45 min walk. The rain held off for me!0 -
A beautiful 2.25 mile walk today in the fall weather...first walk since the marathon and everything seems to be back in place and ready to move. I have a friend who is a gifted Myofascial Therapist who gave me a sacroiliac wedge and some other wedges for stretching for my 50th birthday. Couldn't have asked for a better present to work out all the small kinks after the marathon. Hope you are all finding some time to get out and enjoy the fall weather.0 -
This was a nice piece from the Today show on the benefits of exercise for those women who have had cancer...http://www.today.com/video/today/53375474/#53375474 One more piece in the healing process.0 -
I am nursing some kind of a cold coming on so I have been quiet in the kick butt thread. The rest of you drop and give me ten of anything!0 -
Feel better soon, hugz. Lots of germs floating around out there.0 -
Hugz, a cold...what an icky way to head into November! I hope you can kick its butt with some wholesome eating, lots of hydration, and whatever makes you feel good! I've been traveling, so exercise has been erratic and mostly airport walking. But today I'll be back on track, with cardio and weights at the gym.0 -
Happy November everyone! Exercise consisted of 4 miles of walking this week, and then yesterday and today at Marching Band State Finals. I have nice rosy wind-burned cheeks and 6 layers of clothing on in an attempt to stay warm so I can haul props on and off the field, but to watch my youngest as the drum major leading the band...priceless. She is a senior this year and has led the band for 3 years now. So, this weekend exercise consists of lots of standing and walking for hours on end, feeding students in gusty wind storms in parking lots, moving awkwardly heavy objects at break neck speed, and corralling high school students. Only Nationals left after today, and then it's back to organized exercise as concert band requires no props (yeah).0 -
Ahh...marching band and organizing family life around it! My daughter was in the drum line and band practice, parades and game time sure did keep the whole family on a schedule. Glad you're embracing it, Laural, and having that wonderful experience with your daughter.0 -
No excuses today as it is sunny and I am outta here, gonna do a bit of trudging thru the crisp maple leaves.! Did lebeds today and yesterday. Trying to get back on track.0 -
Good for you, hugz! I've been busy traveling for work --Michigan to Los Angeles to Philadelphia and then finally home today. I got at least 4 miles of speed walking in most days, so overall I'm satisfied but looking forward to a more normal exercise routine for the next week or so. My arm is feeling the flight hangover so I'll be doing lebed tonight.0 -
Some of you may have already seen this... but this blog entry I found really encouraging. It reads a little bit like a commercial for Lymphedivas ... but I like this woman. Think you will too! (As a side note ... these new emo-icons are ... a bit strange?).
Anyway ... enjoy, be encouraged ...0 -
A leisurely 2 1/2 miles at a nearby Nature Center in the fall leaves...I feel refreshed again.0 -
Flying under the radar here but am walking dogs and my feet too!0 -
Well, it's me. No exercise, no outside, no butt-yoga, no muscles! I looked in the mirror, and I have no muscles left, just flab. That's what I get for all that studying.
I really need to get out even though the weather is crummy again. I'm thinking of breaking out the snowshoes and walking the road leading to the east entrance of Mt Rainier that closes every winter.
That's my short term goal for the next few months. Snowshoeing, even though we're in the stormy months and the avalanche danger is very high. I will just stay out of the higher elevations.0 -
Nibbana, I'm looking forward to snowshoeing. I just love it! We probably won't have enough snow until well into next month, so I have to be patient. There's nothing like a snowshoe trek through the woods, especially when the sun is out. Fortunately, no avalanche danger here in flatland!0 -
My treadmill is boring but I've been slugging along. We had a skiff of snow last night and I must say, I'm SO not ready for winter. I've got a great set of snowshoes too and no avalanche risk here either. I had to Google PNW to see where it is Nibbana. And you have snow!!! EEEEK.0 -
We had that same skiff of snow here yesterday, which I interpret to be a 'hello....yes...winter's coming!' And the leaves are still coming down! (Soggy mess...)0 -
me, dealing with a dang sinus issue, means I am not sleeping well at all and tired all the time
but did go the gym, did about half my normal time on bike, treadmill and the pool.
better than nothing and sure hoping the dang nose opens up soon0 -
Proudtospin, if you did bike + treadmill + pool today, you did GREAT no matter if it was less than usual! Feel better soon!0 -
Thanks Carol, actually my cute little trainer has told me that spending 2 1/2 hours at the gym is more than he does and to cut back a bit....so being a bit more mellow....I feel like I want the doc to use a suction on my nostril to clean out whatever!
need to pull out a book to read...0 -
Hi All,
I have been remiss about posting here. I will try to do better. I have been busy with the local support group we have here plus my work teaching. PLUS exercising a lot.
I did go to the Smoky Mountains on my Fall Break at the beginning of the month--with my sister. We did a lot of hiking for four days--one hike was pretty rugged. Weather was fantastic and the fall colors awesome.
Funny story--my sister came over last Friday and we went to a local State Park-Panther Creek and got on a 2 1/2 mile moderately difficult trail. I have done this trail about 7 times since July with no problem. The leaves had all fallen and were covering the trail. We lost the trail and spent a long time wandering around hunting for a tree marker. I finally had to call the Visitor's Center and tell them we were lost! A ranger had to come in and rescue us! I did find out we were not the first ones to get lost on that trail last week. He pointed out a walking trail we could do and not get lost! So we logged about 4 easier miles on the trail he pointed out!
We had snow showers yesterday so I have moved my exercise indoors. Hopefully it will be warm enough this weekend to get outside again. I am getting ready to do elliptical in a few minutes. Have already done MLD and Lebed. Weights were yesterday.
Laural---I am late weighing in but CONGRATULATIONS!

Wow, Becky, you do lead an exciting life! Thank goodness for cell phones!0 -
Hi All,
Beautiful day here--up in the mid 50s. I am going to the local State Park and walk on a couple of easy trails that are CLEARLY MARKED--I hope. If you never hear from me again......
