I only got about 3.5 miles in today, but the past few days have been more than 4, so not bad overall.

Some treadmills have built-in heart rate monitors. You grasp some handles for a few moments and the sensor reads your heart rate.  That can help you figure out how to get your heart pumping at the right amount of exertion, using a combination of incline percentage and belt speed.  If you have any problems at all with speedy walking, another way to get the benefit of exercise is to choose a slow speed but increase the incline.

Thanks for the responses girls. Yes Ive seen pretty much the midrange ones all seem to have the heart rate monitors. You can also get the belt(?) which is supposed to be more accurate for HR than the handles. I'll be trekking out to my MP3 player. DOnt need any piks as I listen to music like people see movies anyway... if you get what I mean.  I was hoping I'd be able to move it through the doorway but it looks like the width of these things are going to be prohibitive. :-( . Better choose wisely where I put it in the 1st place. Are they loud?.

Reckon those inclines might huck my PN up but we'll see. Carol youre a wonder doing those 4 miles girl.

Hugz are you going to get another one? any brand and model in mind? I saw the NordicTrack ones with those 4 springy things under the belt to cushion you. Wow reckon that will be great for us on the AIs. They say up to 30% less shock than on the road.

Hi, Ladies.  I've never posted to this thread before, but was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with boxing and lymphedema?  Has anyone tried it?  I'm talking about actually hitting a heavy bag.  Can it be done with no problems as long as you are wearing your compression sleeve or is it just too much.  Any kind of thoughts on this would be so appreciated!

Musical. No new treadmill for me as I try to get outdoors rain or shine. I invested in good rainwear and so I have no excuses. Plus I feel so good once I get started. The fresh air is wonderful and being in the trails provides cleaner oxygen for me with all those trees.

sonson, A big welcome to come here and kick some LE in the butt. :) OOOH..... I am not sure I would do boxing with LE. That puts alot of strain on the arms and hands and shoulders although it would be heck of a good workout.  We try and avoid bumping/ bruising and injuring our LE limbs so we don't draw extra fluid to the area so boxing would be dicey. I hope others weigh in with there thoughts. Maybe there is something that would provide the same outlet but not so hard on the body. What a good question sanson.Winking

Ok. I really ripped up the road today and did the fastest powerwalk ever. Just stretching it out left as well as lebeds to go.

    go Hugz! Great report!

I have the same concern about boxing as Hugz--likely tough on LE.

Funny Hugz you saying that - Yesterday I reckon I did my fastest ever. I fair bolted down that road and had rosy cheeks when I got back. Unusual for me since Im forever working around PN beast, but I was pleased. I did really well ...um for me.  Could be to do with our mid summer temps too, which are a cool 19degr Ozzie in the SE is roasting under record breaking temps and consistently over 40 Shocked .

Well just got back from the city and had my first try on treadmill. Enjoyed it. I can see it is going to be a great idea for me. The plan is to get out in the fresh air as much as possible but only use the TM when the weather really packs a sad, or when theres chemtrails. Other than that Im rural and have a fantastic quiet road. I get going early. Things are doable with PN then.

sonson, welcome. I'll let others weigh in on your question. My 2cents If it was me, I wouldnt. Too punishing me thinx.

Oh I thought that one was truly universal!  I remember I thought something was pretty much a kiwi saying and it wasnt. Think it was spuds and you told me no yu'all say that over there lol. Anyway I simply meant I didnt see your post until I posted mine. That is par for the course as I'm not exactly the fastest typer there is.

Very entertaining bit of lingo, musical!  I'll have to try to work it into my seminars and see what the young people say.  (If they're paying attention...one never knows!)

Thanks for all the weigh ins on boxing.  My LE is mild as long as I wear my day and night sleeves.  If I skip a few days my arm will swell a good bit.  I decided to try the boxing last night just because I had to know.  There wasn't a problem, but then again I don't really know if doing something like that will have immediate ramifications or if it takes a few hours or days to see problems.  (This is the first time I've taken any risks with the LE.)  But so far so good.  I did try to not hit the bag as hard with my LE arm.  I used to do the class before ever being diagnosed with BC so I knew that I liked it, no loved it.  There's something therapeutic about hitting something with your fist and imagining it's your problems that you're actually hitting.  I'm just hoping that I don't regret my decision.

It's been a year now since I was done with all treatment.  I don't come into these discussion boards as often now that I'm not in treatment, but I really seriously appreciate having all of you to turn to with questions when I do have them.  Every discussion board and every woman on them have been so fantastic!

Sonya, I hope you'll keep us posted on what you determine to be the boxing/LE connection (none, hopefully!!).

I know a couple of women in my gym, not BC folks but they do boxing.

Seems to me based on what my trainer tells me is to start off slow, gradually increase and keep checking.  Since you did it before, may work out so good luck

sonson. I consider my le fairly mild as I am stage one in the hand and stage 2 in the arm and I don't swell much at all. My arm looks normal and my LEist says I am well controlled and not bad.

But if you skip wearing sleeves for a couple days and then you swell a good bit then you may be a bit more progressed.  Achy sore heavy are also symtoms. Therefore I would really watch what you are hitting as you may not want to cause a flare.

I know we are suppose to be careful but at the sametime we got to live. I remember when dragon boat racing was looked down on by the Lymphedem community but with careful excercise planning and starting out slow it is now acceptable. Soooooo... it is good that you have experimented S L O W L Y. Do keep us posted as we are all interested. Maybe you will break the ice and start something new.

The reason why people like punching is because it has a outward motion and my counseller once said it is an outlet for releasing emotions and makes you feel better.   Yes... therapuetic.SmileKicking a  Soccer  ball or punching a pillow would give similar results I was told.

I haven't tried yet but my sister is really frustrated and keeps saying that she wants to climb atop a mountain and scream as loud as she can. Her brain is telling her what she needs to do to reslease all her stress.  I can see this being a release too although I might be to tired once I get to the top and just drop to my knees.Loopy

Just so excited to see people wanting to try different things. YAH.. GO GET THAT LE BEAST AND CHOKE IT TO DEATH WITH THAT BOXER HOLD.

Just back from a Ladies Weekend with 2 good friends in the Smokies/Pigeon Forge area. Hiked almost 4 miles one day, then 5.8 the next (2.3 miles to see Laurel Falls and back). Lovely way to get in some miles and enjoy the slightly warmer TN weather. Arrived back home today to Ohio just in time for more snow. Great to hear of all the adventures and activities you are all trying out in spite of LE. Hate to think we would go through all the treatments and surgery only to give up on new experiences.

    Musicals, what are treddy girls?

That doesnt sound like an american saying.

I gardened too ,but it is winter here. My daffodills are poking their noses out of the ground as we have spring like weather for last couple days and I weeded the rock wall.

I was supposed to put a comma in, as in "treddy, girls" .... anyway its short for treadmill, not that all kiwis refer to them as I have, its more a typical way we show we're happy about something whatever it might be. I thought that would be typically what most people do. OK so maybe not .

Awwww Daffs are sooo lovely. Are yours jonquils and narcissus(sp)? ..those have such a lovely smell that reminds you spring is just about here.. I have some of those. Do you guys get Fresias? Theyre also spring favourites and have the most amazing smell. The original ones usually have the best fragrance and thats certainly the case with these. I think my favourite of favourites would have to be Baronia (the original, not the cultivar). If I could extract the smell out and send it on here I would! Smile

well I was at my gym the last 3 days after being barred from it as recovery from sinus surgery (but I can breath now!) however today, we are having snow, started already and forecast is for 8 or so, figure will find something to do inside!

Musical, ok I totally get what a treddy is, makes perfect sense. I'm going to call it that too. We want to hear all about it when it try it at home.

I grow all types of Daffies but mostly king Alfred because they grow so good. I have little miniature daffs that smell sweet. My hyacynths have their noses out too. First my snow drops then crocus will show. Gotta love flowers. We can't grow frescias , but I  do buy them. So heavenly scented for sure. My evergreen clematis is almost as fragrant. Can't wait to do more-gardening .....but do be careful with le. It is easy to forget how much time slips by and then next thing we know, you have over done it.

Proud, nice to be back at gym. Hope the snow doesn't keep you in to long.

Just stretches for me today, but lots of them and my back and hammys are thanking me.

I went skiing yesterday for the first time in 15 years.  We're with a large group of family in Vermont, where we drove from Michigan earlier this week.  I am really here to take care of the wee ones while parents, aunts, uncles and my DH (grandpa) ski, but I wanted to reacquaint myself with skiing at least once.  It was great (I'm not a good skier, so 'great' is relative to my fun day in the sun and in a lesson, not my actual skiing performance!).  But frigid:  -9 degrees in the morning, warming up to -2.  Sunny and lots of fresh air felt wonderful, but I'm inside with the little ones for the rest of the week.  I do, however, get lots of steps keeping up with the 18-month old, in a rented house that's not childproof!

Oh yes Hugz it is so easy to overdo things while gardening as you tend to want to finish what you start and lol that can take a while. Not that Im a greenfingers, but I do love homegrown veges and flowers are soooo neat. Dug half my spuds. Yummy tomatoes coming on.

Yep will let you know how I get on with treddy. Wont be coming till early next week :-( as they are running out of time this week. Oh well...  patience. Reckon Im fitter than I ever was. Did another scarper down the road this a.m. and for me it was good going! Really taking the bull by the horns with this as Doc said my bad cholesterol was up but so was my good which counteracted the bad. DOnt know how it all works but he said overall my risk of heart attack was waaay low. Also the weight bearing exercise is supposed to be VERY good for the bone density which the AIs diminish. Undoubtedly exercise helps with the stiffness in the joints as well, well at least for me.

Oooh Carol Id love to have a go at skiing but I just KNOW at the very least Id seriously break my face.

Musical I think I have a world record for going slow on skis.  I have perfected 'inching down' the slope!  Trying to limit the face-breaking risks!
