thanks, Musical.  The darndest thing is that I can do the 4 miles because it really does not hurt, it just feels tight and cumbersome when I walk. But I do know that it's not helping the cyst and swelling any when I do that.  So far, I've been told that there's not a surgical solution, but a wonderful friend who's a physician is nudging me to not buy that explanation and to seek another opinion from an orthopedic surgeon. The stakes are high for me--not only do I want to continue my workouts, walking and snow shoeing, our house sits on a high bluff above a lake.  We have 90 steps down to the water, and I seriously need to stay in shape to be able to use the water...it's where we keep my beloved kayak!!!  So I need to be able to exercise my legs, do strength training, and move fast enough to keep the heart strong.

Thanks for the get better comments.

Carol, Bursitis is not fun and generally the more you use your joint the worse it gets. Docs may offer a cortisone shot if that is compatable with the baker cyst. Before you say yes to cortisone do your research.

Yes, you need a different activity and soon or you could be flaring it worse. I would like a second opinion if I was offered that chance. I hope folks weigh in on the trampoline. If you were to get one, make sure it is quality or you will get jarring in your back.  Dang it anyway carol but I do know that this not

will stop you for too long.

I have a rebounder. Mine has a safety bar that is optional which I used when starting up due to balance issues. I like the rebounding, but it does put a fair amount of compression into the knees and hips. You can get a good workout, but I find that I can only use it for so long (maybe 10 to 15 minutes) before I am bored silly, even though I turn TV on to keep me company. I would use it cautiously if you have bursitis and Baker's cyst as I would think it may aggravate these. Hope you can get some answers to help get your knee back in working order. Getting old is not for wimps.

Thanks hugz and Laural.  I'll be starting PT soon to see what the experts can help me do to improve things, and you can bet I'll be asking about the rebounder when I meet the therapist (who is also my LE therapist, so we know each other well, a very good thing!). Hugz, I was offered and have done some research on the cortisone injections, and I'm quite wary.  Need more time to investigate that.

IT looks like you have the right people Carol to direct you to the safest things to do. Just a thought if a dreadmill is something you'de be OK with, they are supposed to have up to 30% shock absorption. Theres also the incline to up that HR.  Mine has 10% incline and up to 20% shock absorption, so this might be a good thing to consider. What about the kayak? (sorry for my ignorance) but do you have a lot of bending of the knees with that or is that only rowing?

Musical, my kayak requires me to sit with my legs extended, but with a nice bend of the knee to prevent backache.  I imagine I'll have problems with keeping my knee in that position for long stretches, but at least there's no pushing or stressing.  The treadmill is a good idea, and there are lots of them at the gym where I work out.

If any of you are on Facebook, I'm competing in a contest sponsored by Juzo, and the first step to winning is to get a lot of 'likes.'  The prize is huge--$5,000--and I would use it as seed money for a lymphedema conference I'm organizing in west Michigan.  The director of Lighthouse Lymphedema Network in Atlanta spends her summers near me, and she asked if we might work together to put on a one-day informational conference for patients and clinicians alike, similar to the very successful conferences LLN puts on in Atlanta each year.  I agreed (because I'm a glutton for lots of work), but there's a fundraising need, and when I saw the Juzo contest I just could not resist.  It's a long shot, because there are some very wonderful competing entries.  If you'd like to help, go to the Juzo Facebook page, then 'like' my entry.  You'll see my avatar is the same one I use here, and the photo I put on Juzo's site is of me on my snowshoes.

Oh, and all in due time, I'll be posting for help with the conference from anyone who's nearby. It's going to be in 2015, date yet to be determined, and I hope that anyone within driving distance will consider coming.  Anyway, more on that in the months to come.

Carol, sorry to hear of the knee problem.  Have you ever tried walking in the pool?  I know it not as active as you seem to be but I recently had some leg aches that were keeping me awake at night, at a trainer suggestion I tried walking in the pool, not easy for me at least to stay straight on the line!  It is my new thing and since I love the pool...Treadmill seemed to be the cause of my leg pains.

I would like you on Facebook but do not know your full name?

Yeap anytime someone says the word surgery to me, I run for a second opinion before agreeing!  Even for cases were it is the only solution, I want a second!

Proud, I can get to a pool in town, but I just cannot imagine adding all the extra time to get there, change afterward, home, etc. to my normal exercise windows.  I guess I'll do it if it comes to that, but hoping to find something I can do on a moment's notice and then be done with it. My gym does not have a pool, so this would be two excursions.

On the facebook 'like,' it only works if you go to the Juzo page and find my contest entry there, and then 'like' it there.  Once you go to the Juzo facebook page, you'll have no trouble finding my entry.  I've not figured out a way to post a link (probably the winner of the contest will be someone who really knows how to use facebook!).  Thanks for being willing to help!

You'll need to look at 'recent posts by others on Juzo'  to find mine, name is Carol Doeringer.  You'll see that our wonderful bco friend Becky Sharp is also competing, and her goal is to use prize money for a garment fund.  So Becky and I are in friendly competition--and we are good friends, actually, having roomed together an an NLN conference in 2012. No matter who wins, it's wonderful that Juzo is doing this.  Of course, they are getting a lot of social media exposure!

    Good for you, Carol!

I have met some great ladies in my LiveStrong class at the Y. I printed the LE info for my trainers and now they talk about LE every time which is fine, but they are always referring to me, etc., which is annoying. One trainer and one participant have LE but don't wear compression during exercise?? I am very compliant. Apparently the trainer with LE is good friends with Shari Lebed, who is a member of our Y, and Shari is going to talk to us about LE and do a class for us. She no longer teaches, usually. My co-participants are going to know more about LE than they may have wanted to but it's all good.

Jeannie, it always surprises me to see women with LE who don't wear compression. Maybe they have long experience with their LE and feel confident about how their bodies respond to the exercise. Personally, I would not tempt fate.

I can see how it would become annoying to be referred to all the time, but kudos to you for putting up with that, because providing the exercise information is a wonderful gift to those who needed to know about LE.

I don't have Facebook. Can I still like Carol or do it on my DD Facebook account.

I am grounded to the couch still and would rip out my eyeballs just to go for a walk. Too sick still. Ugh....

hugz, so sorry you're still ill!  That stinks, truly it does.  Your DD can do the 'like' but you should be focusing on getting better.  Lots of fluids, right?

I wonder if someone can do a "like" for me? I am totally "allergic" to FB, twitter and the like, but would love to support our Carol who helps so many others.

Hugz hope you get better soon.

Iris, FB has many names amongst privacy advocates. I'll be very mildly gentle and call it Spybook .... the favoured "honeypot" for the PRISM agenda. That is, the "five eye" nations which are  USA, Australia, NZ, Canada and GB and all send each other data on its own citizens then say they don't spy on their own citizens. (Duh). That said I don't do FB.

Long ago I decided not to join a site that makes you register in order to just browse. I could see the benefit for certain medical conditions but that's about it.

Musical, I agree with you . Have never understood why folks want to say "I am off on vacation" and then have posted their addresses!

recently thought I would explore facebook but so far, really confused and frankly, do not have that much time to spend online?  nice to know I am not alone!

thought I was just getting old...

I wish I could tell u you're missing out on FB, but truth is it kind of gets boring after a while... :-)

I hope you're all doing well; Carol57 sorry to hear the knee still bothers u, please let us know if the second opinion helps more and there is indeed something more you can do (I sure hope there is). I found your entry in FB, good luck! :-)

hugz4u, hope you're feeling better by now. :-)

Gma, how are your arms? did the taichi breathers help at all?

well, I'm back from a 2-week vacation and I'm happy to say the (really cold) water and the swimming (and probably the fact I was on vacation) and the sun and the local cuisine and the early morning walks on the beach were great for my LE :-)

Also, today I found out the male nurse who gives me the monthly zoladex shots, is an experienced massage therapist as well, who evaluated my arm and suggested a plan and gave me info on vitamin C and LE and salted water and even uses a chirimoya natural cream (fruit) to help gradually massage the skin back to health so it doesn't remain saggy after drainage!! I was ready to bombard him with questions about his technique (especially regarding Kira's suggestions in an earlier post here), but he beat me to it... :-) He made me feel real confident and we start tomorrow. Could he be the ONE???

    good night to all :-)

Been doing the tai chi breathers and I swell - so LE therapist told me not to do a full one just halfway open and close.. I also have what I would call "Rebound Swell'?  Within 5 minutes after I take off my sleeve, I start swelling.  I am in the basement and frustrated.  This just really stinks. Plus the breast pain is bad anytime I go for a walk or even when I have to go grocery shopping.  LoopyShockedDevil
