Motivation is in such short supply sometimes!  I had a zero-movement day today.  Ended up driving to Chicago instead of taking the train, so keep the time away from the office to a minimum, but even so, 3 hours each way.  I'm stressed with work and other project deadlines, so I brought a laptop with me and worked while waiting for my appointment, in the exam room waiting for the doc, etc.  (I draw the line at working while driving....).  Bah, bah, bah!  Tomorrow I will have priorities in better condition and I'll go to the gym for sure; also will do some Leslie and some swimming.  I hope typing it makes it so!

Not a one of us is immune to pitiful-motivation days, and I really benefit from posts here to keep nudging me away from those.

Carol - You may live near me.  I'm going to PM you.

ohio4me - We get it.  We really do.

Tina - I'm feeling better with the break in the weather too.  It's sad when 95 is a cool down.  Undecided  Hope the lingering swelling goes away soon.

I forgot to post my exercise.  Tongue out  I did some interval cardio tonight ... lots of stuff thrown in there ... a step on the hard floor with seven boosters under it to work on my abs/legs, step machine, elliptical, treadmill and upright bike.  About 45 minutes total.  I closed the gym tonight ... didn't get there until 9:45 ... so I hope I'm not up all night from the rush.  I need to work on getting to the gym earlier.  It's always something, isn't it?  Wink

Wow, Dawne-Hope, if I did that kind of workout that late, I would be up all night!  What an amazing workout you did!

Thanks for your answers.  I had the cording but that seems to have gone away with exercise.  My surgeon said I have surface vein thrombosis and that should go away too.  Hope they don't come back. I've gone to a LE specialist and LE physical therapist and I do my exercises daily. I haven't started the weight training yet, probably in the next couple of weeks.  Now, I'll know to wear my arm sleeve and glove when I do.

I'm so glad that I found this site.  Thanks again for your help.

GmaFoley - Baby steps. One simple thing you can do is drink more water. I carry around a liter and a half thermos and at the very minimum make sure I drink that much water. Lower your caffeine intake if you're a heavy caffeine user. Watch what you eat...cut down on salt and any foods that have MSG, or preservatives or nitrates...those things cause inflammation.

Walk! If you have a desk job, make sure you get up every hour (If you're drinking enough water you will have to do this anyway).

Do the exercises that your therapist taught you, do them at least once every day.

    Hang in there. xo

Others will have other things...but those are things you can do right now.

GmaFoley--Good advice from Dawne-Hope.  Take baby steps.  This is so new for you.  It will get better.  You might want to get a pedometer and take as many steps as you can each day.  Then go for 10 steps further the next day.

Did five miles on treadmill in an hour today.  I can now do a minute of 6 mph at one time.  A few weeks ago I was lucky if I could do 15 seconds.  This time last year (wrapped) I could barely do 15 min on treadmill.  I have also been doing the one minute on elliptical every 30 min.  So far have done 8 minutes.

Cooler here finally but steady rain all day so still cannot get outside which is where I would rather be!

I'm so new at this that he didn't give me any exercises except the walking hands up the wall... And this week I managed to have swelling in my arm... didn't think that was going to happen :P

I am drinking water and you ladies would be as happy as my nutritionist was to hear this: i have gone from 15 cans of diet coke a day to only 4 cans... it took me a year to do it but that happened finally - I will work on the more water part now.

Drank my water. Steps were just over 4200 today - not as high the last few days. I drive home tomorrow so steps will be low. I will stop 3-4 times to get out and walk but not for long. It's a six hour drive and I just want to get home.

Going to do Leded and MLD and call it a night.

Yesterday I did not report in, but I got only about 7,000 steps in, much of that on a treadmill for 20 minutes warming up in the gym.  Then I did my weight lifting with the trainer for an hour, followed by a good amount of stretching.  Then I swam leisurely for a half hour, mostly paddling around without arms, for fear of overload after the weight lifting.  My goal was just to stay submerged below the chin for the compression effect, and to use the water as resistance for some abdominal work.  Someday soon, I need to look at the material nitocris posted recently, on water exercises for LE.

Today my desk work pile is huge, so I'll have to be very disciplined to do some serious exercise. I should use Becky's method of doing it first thing on waking up.  Is there an alarm clock that shouts 'move your butt' ?

Edit: Carol - I don't think I could get up any earlier - as it is, 3:30 am is too early, but I do it so I have a roof over my head..I think I would like your "Move you butt" alarm too!

I have both jobs today - I have an at home computer job editing press releases and then off to the fabric store for 5.5 hours - I have to keep that job once a week to keep the label of "no lapse of insurance"... Its gonna be a long day for a swollen upper arm and breast...  I guess I will work on drinking water today and elevating my arm whenever I can..

Hey, is this cool or what?  I was telling my coworkers about doing my elliptical every 30 min for a min to avoid being too sedentary.  I am off for the summer but came in today and an exercise room has been set up with a recumbent bicycle and a stability ball with a graph of stability ball exercises!  I have been furiously pedaling for a minute or two every thirty mins.  Beats just walking around the hallways.  I teach at a college and am often at my desk for long hours.  The only problem is going there and someone else is using it.  My boss said it is to help my lymphedema.  What power I have!

gmafoley, are you getting up at 3:30 to edit the press releases?

Becky, that's a total 'wow' -- they must revere you!  Be sure to astonish them by doing our bounce-on-the-ball-while-fist-pumping maneuver!

Got my water in today - that's about all the exercise I had. Worked about 4.5 hours before the 6 hour drive home. Tired. Few steps. Gonna do some MLD tonight and focus on relaxation and rest. Will get back on track tomorrow.

Carol, Yes I have to start work at 4am and get up at 3:30 to take a shower and make myself my yogurt smoothie. I have to start geting the press releases out before stock market opens - I live on the west coast - hence the 4am.

Today was just an 'ok' exercise day for me (chained to my desk again): 6800 steps, nothing particularly aerobic.  Except my fingers got a long and speedy workout at the keyboard.  Ohio, I know you work your fingers overtime, too.  Somehow we need to invent a way to get full-body exercise benefit out of typing.

I got nothing good to report except that I am awake at 4am!!! Therapist appt today and she applied kinesiotape after MLD. My steps are so low, I am in the basement! I have actually noticed my LE was better while I was travelling, even with the high temps. I got more steps in regularly every day. Since I returned home, I am drowning in paperwork. Carol, please come cut this chain off me! Cannot wait to get off this merrygoround. Husband and I plan to take a walk tomorrow. I mean, this morning. Going back to sleep now. Wait. Water first.

Becky, as you seem to have such an nice boss, a suggestion for a future purchase could be a treadmill desk. You could read your students' papers while walking and your collegues would certainly appreciate it too.

Monday and wednesday were cardio and abs days with D. Austin. Tuesday and thursday, walk day with L. Sansone; (5 miles) .  Elliptical  a couple of times during afternoons (1km-10mn) to unwind after sitting too long at my computer.  Yesterday was a no exercise day, just rest and deep breathing sequences throughout the day+MLD in the evening.  This morning accompanied my daugther who went jogging.  She ran 5 miles and I rode my bike by her side.  We had a good stretching session afterward.  Have been pushing a bit too much on lower back this week, so tomorrow will be just cool Tai Chi.  Lost my patience with the pedometer;  can't reset it to zero and the distances are not right....Yell (the 5 mile DVD should equal 8km and the pedometer showed 5km (3 miles)???)

    Have a good week-end.

I finally got my tush in gear today, forced myself to leave my desk for a while.  I am writing a long document about lymphedema (more on that soon!) and it is both fascinating and overwhelming, and I have a hard time leaving it to do other things. Like exercise.  Anyway, today I broke away and did a 3-mile with Leslie Sansone, and then I jumped in a pool to bask in the full-body compression.  I cannot claim exercise from that, because I was intentionally not using my arms for propulsion, but for whatever exercise it might have been worth, it felt great!

Nitocris, I'm sorry your pedometer is not cooperating.  Kira's pedometer has been mis-recording her steps, too.  Technology, even simple technology, can be so irritating.

Tina, perchance did you get that walk in today?

Spent the day slogging around the snow in the high alpine at Mt Rainier. Hand is complaning a little, but too bad, my arm is going hiking whether it likes it or not.

nibbana, Snow in July- fun!  And it's good to show your arm who's boss from time to time.  I think we all do activities that our LE barks at.  It shows we're human and we're not letting LE rule.

Nitocris, the treadmill desk for Becky is so funny!! When I readi these posts at night, I sometimes have to put my hand over my mouth so I don't wake my husband with my laughing.

No, Carol, I did not get that walk in today. Rain, rain, and when it did clear temporarily I was nailed to paperwork and making serious progress. Did not stop until 9pm. Stressful, but the more I do, the better I feel. Under 4,000 steps today and my trunk is bothering me. Although my hand and arm seem to be doing well with applied kinesiotape. Drinking more water and going to bed. Not promising MLD or wearing of vest. Just can't do anymore even though it might make me feel better tomorrow. I'm living in the moment . . tonight, anyway. If I curse about how I feel tomorrow, y'all can say I told you so!!

Nitrocris--I would LOVE to have a treadmill/desk.  I had shown that to my boss several years ago.  The bicycle was a freebie given by someone, not bought.  The treadmill/desk is too expensive.  One of my coworkers has a seat/stand that has her basically standing as she works.  She has her computer propped way up.  I think I will get one of those.  I was thinking of getting a stability ball for my desk but I am going to try hers out.

I only got the basics in yesterday-MLD and MLD exercises.  I went over to Banner Elk, NC for a wedding of a student of mine who just graduated.  Went with friends so did not have to drive the 1 1/2 trip.  The reception was outdoors but cool.  I did a lot of walking and moving around during reception.  The area is beautiful in the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Will make up for it today.  Did not do well on diet either!

Tina--Hope no aftereffects today.  Take some time for yourself.

    Nibbana--I want some snow!

Okay, I thought Nitocris was joking, but I searched and there really is a treadmill desk! What a great idea. Becky, maybe you can have someone build one for you. Did you see this:

Not any worse for non-compliance last night, but I will definitely get on board tonight. Becky, I have things to do today, but we're having dinner out with friends this evening. Some relaxing is definitely in order!!

Rainy and cool day today, so exercise was indoors.  Short program before breakfast; got on the elliptical this morning for 30mn, alternating resistance between 8 and 12.  This evening, Tai Chi for beginners with Scott Cole.  Sure did not feel like a "flying wild goose" with the sleeve on..... removed it and boy... did it feel good!.  Regaining freedom and lightness without compression.  Clumsy and a bit stiff goose, but I was flying (almost)Laughing

Yesterday I baked a wonderful blueberry pie with the first blueberries of the season.  So, today, I had some extra calories to burnLaughing.  Started the week with L.Sansone's 2 mile walk:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBgB_cqDiXs&feature=relmfu

(32mn;  good variety of steps with various arm movements and short stretching at the end) .  Followed by a 15mn slow and light weight lifting session for arms and pecs plus some extra stretching.  Managed to reset the pedometer which shows 8446 steps so far.  But distances shown by pedometer don't match the ones from DVD or my elliptical.  I think the step width is wrong.

Ladies, for those of you who have long office hours, here is a 15mn desk workout to unwind those tight muscles.  Have a good day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKCPcRcJmqc  (pretty good; covers legs, arms and upper chest, abs and final stretching).
