Dawne, thank you for all that you have shared, and do come back to update us on your exercise and LE care from time to time.

Binney, your Literary Mama column this month is a wonderful reflection on both chemo and your special family. Thank you for putting words to paper. When on earth do you find the time?

My exercise report for today: 8.1 miles, mostly airport walking plus a little walk around a very nice little town in upstate NY.

Hey, LE butt-kickers, does anyone have exercise to report? I'm feeling silly with the frequent reports.

I was stuck in one room all day for work but found a safe place to walk this evening, getting in 4.5 miles before finding some dinner. Tomorrow I head home and will have ample time to get lots of walking in.

11018 steps today.  We've been blessed with perfect weather.  I've been enjoying every minute spent outside.

Had my annual visit to see my BS in the city today.

I'm such a chicken. Ever since I found out on these threads that the taking of a sentinel node can mean much more than just one node, I've wondered how many were actually taken on both sides. I chickened out asking her last year and did so again today. :/ She completely blew me off last year and didn't ask me about it at all today. *sigh*

Was feeling really lonely today for some reason...I so miss my mom on days like this...but THEN...tornados. no.joke. Big time storms moved through and I was stuck in St. Louis for several hours because big time storms were in the direction I needed to go to go home. And I LOVE thunderstorms. So that made the day better. :) I walked a couple of miles at the zoo with thunder in the distance and saw the big cats, giraffes, zebras, various antelope and birds. On the ride home...it was some of the most spectacular lightning I've ever seen. Red lighting. RED! I'm not sure I've ever seen red lightning at night. Wowza. A spectacular ending to a rather depressing start. I was very swollen last night and my arm was hurting last night...now I know why. An awesome thunderstorm was brewing. :)

    Cindyl - Enjoy!

Binney4 - Are you reading the Hobbit or TLOTR? I'm enjoying the Hobbit. I've only read it once, 20 years ago, and this time around I've been reading it out loud to myself. ;) Not sure what that says about me...but I am thoroughly enjoying it. :)

Hi--Did cardio on elliptical yesterday for 30 min.  Then spent 1 1/2 hrs. with stretching, core exercises and weights.  Am getting ready the dam and walk/run for today.

I am packing to go to Raleigh on Friday for my godgranddaugher's fourth birthday on Saturday. My sister and four year old great nephew are going with me.  Hopefully will get some workout time in parks with the kids.  Plus party is in one of those bounce centers.

Carol--I talked to Tegan last night and she asked if the "blonde" lady had ever received her invitation.  You are still invited to the party!

Busy, busy!!! Sorry for not checking in. Pedometer was off for the w/e, but I helped a friend clear her basement and helped carry things up and down stairs numerous times over two days. Wore my glove and sleeve for task. I know all that movement counts for something. This past week I have not been as consistent with walking, and I am going away again this coming w/e. Plan to get completely back on track, as even with slacking a little I notice a difference in how I feel. I have been walking for a long enough time now that it is definitely a habit, so I am not feeling nervous in the service about missing a couple extra days. Will get completely back in line shortly!! Why is September so crazy? I haven't had such a jam-packed month like this in a long time, right up to the very end!

Went to the gym yesterday, was planning to do the elyptical for an hour.   Opened my gym bag and didn't have my sneakers.  Fruedian slip?  If it weren't for this topic, that would have been the end of it, but when I got home, I walked the dogs for a mile, then took my bike out for the first time in several years and rode around the neighborhood for half an hour.  I realize I have a lousy neighborhood for bike riding, all hills.  Planning on getting to the gym today for half an hour on the elyptical.  Keep it up everyone!  It is great inspiration.  I am a Tolkien fan too.  Have not read The Hobbit though.  Maybe I'll download it.  Kay

Binney and Dawn, I'll have to check your links out when I am home.  I am at work at the moment.  Shhhhh....

Great reports! Sounds like as a group, we are doing pretty well with movement.

Lovetocook, I once drove to the gym for a weightlifting session and had not remembered the sleeve/gauntlet. So frustrating! Luckily he was able to rearrange appointments to allow me to do a round trip to retrieve them.

Dawne, why not send a little note, by snail mail, asking about the node count? Just say you forgot to ask, and ask if a nurse can call you with the information. And if storms bring you cheer, well bring on the storms (in your part of the country...I prefer sun as my medicinal weather)!

Tina, stairs are great exercise, so count them for sure. Sounds like you stayed in motion helping your friend.

Becky, I am still tickled that when you included me in your Skype session with the little one when we were at NLN, she judged my crowning gray glory to be blonde! Tell her I am sorry to miss her party!

I am on a brief break for a bite of lunch at an airport. I need 5001 steps to reach my 10,000 goal, so I had better get moving...plane boards in 40 minutes.

Wow, Dawne, thanks for that article! What a great, simple, straightforward way to advocate for LE! And what a great lady. Truly inspiring.

We're reading The Hobbit, but we'll charge right on into the Lord of the Rings trilogy after that. Bilbo's tale is part of the whole, so we always read all four books together (who can stop once you've started?!).

I'm still counting corks, and it works beautifully for me. At any time of day I know where I am visually by just glancing at the bowl. Most days I've been doing extra corks, so very gradual increase.Laughing A bit unconventional, I know. Low tech. Whatever works!

Dawne, that article really is lovely.  I wonder how she has solved the challenges of administering her program. It's one thing to raise funds for garments; quite another to put together a program to evaluate financial and medical need and administer the payments.  I've been bugging NLN to put on an advocacy summit (preliminary response is good; we shall see if they follow up), and this lady would be a wonderful, wonderful person to make a presentation and get people fired up to do some serious LE good.

    Thanks for posting!

Binney, I think your cork method is genious-level thinking.

I'm eking out my steps today.  Up to 9,471 so pretty sure I'll have 11,000 or so by bedtime, because there's a little bit of walking to/fro dinner tonight.

proudtospin - One of the brilliances of these boards is to bring people together of various giftings, knowledge ... and put our heads together to make an impact.  I don't know where I'd be if Binney and Dawn and others who started and worked on StepUp SpeakOut hadn't done it.  Carol ... doing what she's done with the nurses ... it's all of us learning, brainstorming, sharing resources ... together we really can make a difference. Praying that you have wisdom.

Dawne-Hope, I just hate the LE, but I am deeply grateful for the opportunity it has given me to 'meet' so many incredible people on this forum. My crazy job means I get around the country and that plus some LE events has enabled me to meet some of the women in this forum, in person. Every single one has proved to be warm, helpful, and genuinely interested in supporting each other through the LE challenge. I am so humbled when I think about the amount of time that our Su-So friends have invested in that site, and the time they and others spend patrolling this one to make sure that questions are answered with both accuracy and compassion.

I just started looking at the LE board in June, but you ladies are awesome... I have an issue in our small town though and maybe you can help. My LE therapist thinks I'm the one to spread the knowledge... My LE therapist is the only one that I have found, through all my medical team that has a true grasp of LE.. How do I approach these docs that say, "Oh I know all about LE - I'm PRO-LE" but they don't really get it?  Any help with this right now would be greatly appreciated... Now that I am concidered Bi-Lateral, I still can't get one of my med team to order labs from the foot - they say to use whatever forearm isn't swollen...  The just don't get it...

gmafoley, if you think your docs and nurses are serious about learning about LE, you can give them a document designed for nurses (but appropriate for MDs as well). On the stepup-speakout.org site, there's a nice page for all healthcare providers to read, and there's a downloadable pdf designed to be printed and handed over to any MD, surgeon, nurse, or tech who needs a quick education in LE.  I know you know where to find those resources, but in case anyone new is seeing this, here they are:

    http://stepup-speakout.org/what_we_need_healthcare_providers_to_know_about_lymphedema.htm

    http://stepup-speakout.org/essential%20informat%20for%20healthcare%20providers.htm

And, if you think anyone on your team is really game for learning, you can go to www.lymphedemaspeaks.com, use the 'contact us' form, and ask for a copy of a self-study course called Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: The Nurse's Role in Care and Prevention.  It's big--about 65 pages of learning content--but if your team is serious about helping you and their other patients--they will get a lot of information.

Good luck opening the door to better MD/nurse education on LE, and let us know how your efforts are received!

Carol - I gave my primary the stepup speakout form.. He said, "Oh I know all about LE - I'm PRO-LE". I then told him He could keep it and share it with others in the group that are willing to learn about it... He said sure... But he really doesn't get the importance of the "NO BP - NO NEEDLES" warning.. and was too busy to discuss it.. I told my LE T - I am too frustrated with them at the moment to discuss anything with them.. But thank you for that other info.. I think my surgeon, truly has my best interest in mind - I gave him the stepup info - he just doesn't get that LE can be in the upper arm without being in the lower arm. So my LE T and I are treating it as if it is LE with MLD and sleeve - the upper arm swelling has already started to go down Smileafter 3 days of wearing the sleeve..

I haven't read the entire thread - sorry, but I'd like to join in.  I'm coming over from the GRRR thread - I need to post to keep me accountable for doing my daily Lebed exercises, and Carol suggested that this might be a good thread for that.  I already post on the Let's Post Our Daily Exercise thread in the Fitness section, but this would be a good one to include LE measures.

So here goes:  Last night - Flexitouch. This morning before work: MLD, 2 mile run, Lebeds.

Mary, wow...what a great LE care day, and all before heading to work!  I think you've just raised our bar...good for you!

I have 4.4 miles of some very speedy walking in today, but no MLD yet, and umm...not big on Lebeds, but I do have it on my laptop so I'll take this as a challenge to work it in sometime today or before bed at latest.   I tend to do MLD at night, although yesterday I watched a new (to me) video on MLD and the presenter said morning MLD is more useful than evening MLD, so I need to think about that.  Does anyone know, is that standard advice?

Nats, Good job, I am trying to increase Lebed. I find at night while watching TV is a good time but I have to nail myself to the wall to get it done. My MLD girl claims Lebed is as good as self MLD which I suck at. Does anyone agree with my MLD girls statement?

Got in 9,000 steps so far. Feels good to be out walking again.Cool

JO, Your heart is with your Granddaughter and so that is what is important now.  Don't beat yourself up.  I am sure you will join us once this wonderful distraction is over. We all sometimes need to take a LE break otherwise we go stir crazy. Just promise yoourself this is a little break and then jump on the bandwagon the minute the wedding is over.  Got to keep the momentum going!Wink

I actually put mind over matter and conquered the treadmill today. I did 3 miles in 36 minutes. I will be ready for top that 5 k next summer!

My LE therapist told me I really need to wear my sleeve and tribute every day and night to control it. He taught me mld and some exercises (not sure ifthey were lebed or not), but last time I saw him, he said thatwouldn't help the LEmuch. Not sure if that was particularly for me. My LE is in my lower arm and hand. Not sure if he was rightor not either. I was also doing the pal program. Maybe that has something to do with it?

LoveToCook - I'm not clear on what your therapist meant when he said it wouldn't help your LE much? WHAT wouldn't help you LE much? The exercises, Lebed, sleeve, MLD or tribute?  I'm not clear what you meant.

You're doing great on your training!  Kiss
