I prefer doing the Lebed lymphatic opening over the MLD.

I did do MLD last night before bed because I was so swollen.  The weather combined with some chicken I bought at Kroger is doing a number on me ... I bought the already baked chicken because I was too lazy to cook and I realized within 15 minutes of eating it that I shouldn't have.  Not sure whether it was the salt content or the salt plus whatever preservatives where in it ... but I'm paying for it.

I worked out with my LiveStrong trainer today ...nothing new there then went and did 10 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes hard intervals on the bike.  I'm tired tonight.

I signed up for a 5k race on October 6.  It's 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning ... Undecided ... not my favorite thing by any means to do on a Saturday morning ... but it benefits hospice and it's sponsored by Gold's Gym so I'll get to be with a lot of my old friends from the gym.  I miss them so it'll be fun.

Sorry, the mld and exercises wouldn't help much according to him. He said the sleeve and tribute were essential.

    Good luck with the 5k!

LoveToCook - I don't think I do the MLD correctly although while I can't see much of a reduction in swelling when I do it, I do notice it helps the pain ... so it is doing something.  Undecided  The exercises do make a difference for me.  If I do nothing else LE related in a day except the stretches ... it does help.  At least for me.

You're not only going to finish that 5k next summer ... you may place in the top three the way you're going right now.  You really are doing great!

I either do the Lebeds or the exercises similar to Lebeds that I was given in therapy every day.  Have just finished my MLD and Lebeds for today and am getting on the treadmill in a few minutes to do about 45 mins.  Then am off to Raleigh for a birthday party so will be in the car for about 6 hours.  I often do what I can of the exercises in the car when I am not driving.  I also pump and do some fast walking at rest stops.  My 4 yr old great nephew will be with us and he loves all of the moves I do and imitates me.  He loves the Lebed DVD in the hotel room.  More fun with someone!  So cute to see him pumping.  Next thing you know he will be asking for a sleeve!

2 mile walk last night. Flexitouch before bed.  MLD and 30 minute core/weight workout this morning (using sleeve and gauntlet of course!) and 15 minute Lebeds this morning. Plus I took a couple of hours off this morning to get a few things done, so I snuck in a mile bonus walk with Mikey, our red Min Pin.

I'm lucky that my MLD and Flexitouch don't take that long.  My arm LE has been so controlled for a few years that I can basically treat it as Stage 0 and get away with mostly preventative measures, and not have to do all the maintenance.  So I can skip the arm stuff with my MLD and just work on the trunk, and with the Flexitouch I can get away with the 26 minute chest/trunk cycle instead of the full hour cycle that includes the arm.  That makes a big difference - I was much less compliant about those things when I had to take all the time to include the arm stuff as well as the truncal stuff.

    Great poster, GMA!

NatsFan - My LE therapist is slowly moving me to doing everything.. I still see him 2 x a week since my last surgery so he gets the parts I have trouble with... But with the new issue, with the "good" upper arm, we are going to stay with that for another month... I will owe this hospital for the rest of my life, but at least what he does, HELPS!  not like other practioners....

I found my pedometer - will try seeing how much mileage I make at the fabric store, while working... the first time I used it there, I somehow reset it so this time I have that one and my ipod pedometer.. will track it both ways and see...

This has been the craziest week in the world!! Running around nonstop - no need for pedometer as I haven't sat down much for days. Today I am driving to RI to see two special friends. One of them I've known a long time and haven't seen in 10 yrs, and the other I've yet to meet in person. Should be a great weekend, and I can't wait to arrive. Since I am driving by myself and part of the trip included a trip thru NYC on Rt 95 and few rest stops, I haven't been able to do my usual stop and walk. I finally got a chance to take a break near Fairfield, CT. This morning I had to pack my car by myself, which included carrying all my stuff downstairs. No ill effects. Been doing breathing and hand, arm exercises while driving. Did node stim when I first got to rest stop.

Carol, my personal answer your question about best time of day to do MLD is that I would do it when I need it most. I'm usually more swollen in the evening than morning, so I do my MLD before bed and then don my night sleeve and vest. It feels good to do when I am swollen and I experience the most benefit then. I don't know what the official stance on the best time to do is though.

Okay, it's time to get back on the road!

MLD and Lebeds this morning.  Almost skipped the Lebeds then realized I had to post on here and didn't want to confess.  So I did them instead so I could post with a clean conscience.   Cool

Natsfan, I am smiling because posting here has a lot to do with how faithful I am with exercise, so glad this thread nudged you for lebeds. I am doing three days of a huge art event that covers three square miles with thousands of art exhibits, so walking, walking, walking. Six miles yesterday after getting a noon start, and 4.8 so far today, with lots more to see. MLD for sure tonight, but maybe not lebeds...but Natsfan, if I do not do them, I will be thinking of you in admiration!

purple, some women sure do think so!  I've never tried it, but I'll bet someone will weigh in soon.  I have tried the ball bounce, which is similar.  Sit on a stability ball, bounce gently, and do some fist pumping while you're at it.  Seems to help minimize any aching after I do a workout.

Natsfan...you got me feeling guilty, so I did the Lebed lymphatic opening!  DH wanted to take a break from the art walking (I think he REALLY wanted to watch some the OSU-Michigan football game), so I was indoors when I posted about your lebeds earlier.  Well, a little while later it more or less dawned on me that I had no excuse not to do at least the opening.  And truly, that stretching felt so wonderful, I am wondering why (besides the creepy James character) I haven't done this more often.  Thanks for bringing lebeds front and center in this thread.

Hurting a little but have kept the pedometer on today - so far 6240 steps. Still have a hole from my leaky last week but is starting to finally close... Breast does hurt some at the moment, but did have to bring out the big pain meds... Just wanted to check in - still haven't gotten the Ledbed dvd - I don't have any money right now to get it Undecided.

I am not able to search the threads at the moment, but I believe that Nitocris has posted links to some Lebed youtube videos. Is anyone using those and can repost a link or two for gmafoley? Or gma, you could try searching on youtube to see if you find them.

What a fun way to get your exercise in!

I ran a 5k on the treadmill at the gym today in 36 minutes. Did 12miles on the stationary bike yesterday in 40 minutes. I am feeling confident that I willbe able to do that mini triathlon next summer. But I won't even be in the top 3 in my family. LOL. My DH, brother, niece and niece's DH will all beat me. I'm trying to convince my 14 yo DD to do it also, but I think she is afraid I'll beat her.

GMA, my pt gave me a handout with exercises to do. I'll bring it into work and scan it in for you on Monday.

Lovetocook thanks. I would like that.

After shopping DH and I got home we picked all our tomatoes & apples, made 14 quarts of apple sauce and canned them. Steps on pedometer for the full day - 9420. And no, that is not resting and breast is leaky & hurts.. But I did wear my sleeves. I will do some MLD before bed, drinking lots of water. I just couldn't rest any longer :(

I don't know who inspires me more, you Dawne-Hope with that amazing story and your resultant accomplishment or you GmaFoley, who, in your absolutely crazy way, are refusing just to lie down and take it.  Ladies, consider me officially on board.  Pedometer ordered.  Video ordered.  Large pile of clothing taken off the excercise bike (!). It's noon and I've only done my mld, but I will make time to do this.

I need a serious kick in the butt to get me back on board.

I met Tina yesterday (how cool is that???), and she has her weights in the car!!!! And she made better food choices than I did....

I just haven't gotten back into an exercise routine with my new job, although it's far more physically active than my former one.

And my weight hasn't gone up, but it hasn't gone down either. And I make decent food choices.

No excuses. I'm going to try and set some achievable goals, and post them.

MLD this morning, then ran a 5K for Ovarian Cancer on a co-worker's team.  I did the Lebeds at the race as part of my pre-race warmup.  I think I may have done a personal best time - now don't laugh any real runners out there, but I think I did sub-12 minute miles - that would be a best for me in a 5K.  Official times will be on the website later this week - we'll see if my self-timing was right.

Jo, your day on the Amish farm sounds like a perfect outing with the grandkids. Lovetocook - great goal to do a sprint tri next year! GMA - yum!  Quail - you go girl! Kira - you can do it - you've been such an inspiration to so many of us that it's time to return the favor.  So this is for you (done gently of course)  :::kick:::: Now get going! Tongue out

NatsFan - I think that's a great time! I averaged 12:20 miles on my 6k. I'd be super pleased with sub-12 minute miles. That's awesome! Congratulations!

Jo-5 - We're not competing against one another here. Your day at the farm sounds fabulous!

It's never too late to start weight training and it helps prevent bone loss and can kick start your metabolism too. I know with the LE it is tricky but even if you do some only for your lower body it can jump start your metabolism. Also, learning to do intervals has really helped my stamina and it can jump start your metabolism too.

Welcome Quail to  LE BUTT KICKERS! Now that you are on board we will have even more encouragement. Cool

Kira,How exciting to meet Tina. A real dedicated girl huh! Nice to hear the new job is more physical as that counts as a good choiceWink Are there a flight of stairs you can take? I take the long way to the bathroom by walking out of the building and deepbreathing until I get to the next entry door which is near the bathroom.  Bonus I get to see the outdoors as I am in a windowless enviroment.Smile

DId 8000 steps and lebed opening yesterday. Will try and repeat this today as it is sunny and perfect temp.

Nats. That is fantastic! Even better doing the lebed opening in public... shows your committed to LE care. I did it at the beach one sunset and it felt kinda like a tai chi thingy. Was so peaceful and I did it slow as it should be done.

JO, What a nice day to get steps in at the farm and to visit grandkids too.

GMA, Your so smart combining steps with cooking...very creative.Cool

Lovetocook. Wow, it's nice that you have a family to exercise with. Keep it up!

hugz4u - right now I'm all snuggled in with one cat on my right, my other cat on my left and getting ready to finish, "The Hobbit." I've been a good girl with my MLD. I've done it three consecutive nights in a row. It does have a cumulative effect. I may go to the gym later...but right now I'm looking forward to a good read and cozy nap with my girls. :)

It was great to meet Kira! She is a sweetie. Kira, didn't you realize I made food choices that allowed me to talk more easily?! Now that you've let the cat out of the bag about bringing my weights in the car, I will fill the rest of the Kick Butt gals in on my little secret.

Over the past month, I have been doing the Univ of Penn's Strength After Breast Cancer program, which is the weight lifting program they offer to patients that's based on the PAL study. At the same time, I am also enrolled in the current PAL study that Katie is doing which is looking at how to get the program out safely into communities. So I met the study coordinator the other week downtown and had a strength test and completed a couple of questionnaires. I will be interviewed three, six and twelve months after my five-week training program ends. I will keep records of how often I follow the program, the amount of weight and reps I am doing. Talk about motivation to exercise!! Part of this is obviously to see how long people continue with the program, as well as how they progress on their own. Next week will be my final session and I will be given a set of the Power Block weights.

While I have waited so long to start this program, and I was thrilled and excited to be doing it, I feared saying anything about it before I was done might jinx me and I'd have a flare or some kind of problem. As of now, I am doing fine and settling in nicely with my new routine. I'm not supposed to do heavy aerobic exercise on the same day as weight lifting just yet, so I am working on creating balance to my exercise week. And since the classes have been once a week and I am required to do the program twice on my own in between training sessions, it has limited my longer walks for now.

So, now you all know why I have been somewhat MIA lately. Since you know what's happening, I can freely report on all of my activities. Last night I made use of those one pound weights in my car and completed the whole weight lifting program in the bedroom where I am staying at my friend's house. Today we took a short walk on the beach and will take another one later around the nearby lake. My friend isn't well, so we are breaking up the activity to accommodate his needs. It's fine with me, as the RI scenery is just stunning, and I am enjoying looking around vs marching relentlessly for miles. Tonight we are cooking fresh lobsters and having corn on the cob. Oh, and a martini, just because! It has been a wonderful visit so far.

Kira, next time we will plan ahead so there's more time, but I really enjoyed meeting you. I think we both had so much to say and share, and a shorter visit just wasn't fair! Funny how three hours seems like a short time, but there's so much more one can say in person vs typing. My goodness, if you got all of us together, I think we could talk for days and still have more to share!

Tina, I got in the car, and looked at the time and was shocked! We talked for almost three hours and it felt like minutes, and you total sweetheart--you were willing to show me how to use the weights right there!

Hey, the sun just came out here in RI, so go enjoy the beach, and the lobster and Please, please show a klutz like me how to do "the moves".
