Kicking LEs butt!! Exercise & Self Care Log

hugz - I flew a lot prior to bc and I miss it. I have friends I went to school with who want me to visit them in Africa and I don't want to go for all the reasons you mentioned. I think heat is the singular worst flare trigger for me. It would be very unwise for me to go...at least until I can get some of these fancy sleeves (the kind you sleep in). Too many things in a situation like you mention...that really could put us in a life-threatening situation (cellulitis).
When I fly I'm thinking to the east coast...my big fear is that I'm going to blow up somewhere that I haven't before (develop truncal LE, etc,.).
I'm thinking about taking a tai chi class at my local community college...I love the little bit that we did in my Flow class. I've secretly always wanted to be a dancer and I'm not the most coordinated gal on the planet. I love the movements with the breath...it feels like a dance and it looks so pretty.0 -
Gmafoley, hooray! Three miles! I think you have turned a corner!
Dawne and Hugz, I sure wouldn't be doing all this flying around if I didn't have to, for work. Hot, tropical, buggy destinations would spook me, too. My idea of a fabulous leisure trip is now a cool, sea level place...maybe visit Nitocris in Finland in winter! Or anyplace where you can exercise outdoors without getting sweaty just standing still. (Good thing I'm used to lots of snow, although I do not like skiing. But snowshoeing, that is my kind of snow activity!)
I woke up at 5:00 this morning and could not go back to sleep, so I got up and did a 3 mile jog. I will probably have to stifle some yawns later today, as I will be sitting in meetings all day, but I feel great starting out with some activity.0 -
. I do find fear to be a powerful motivator.
Hmmm....naturally that is why I do mine faithfully ! I told you we all had soemthing in common!
I went to Walmart yesterday and 3 other stores. I am normally not on my feet so much. I have been having a LOT of trouble with ICY cold feet. This is not new to me, but I swear it has worsened since the LE! NO IDEA WHY.Well, it is a circulaotory issue so I suppose they are connected. I told a DR 2 yrs ago during a heat wave and they sent me for an ABI which was norm. Then I told my PCP last summer and he said " I'm not buying it." YEP, true story ! WTH would someone pretend their feet felt like ice ?! I dunno'. Okay, I went off to the GRRr thread again..
Anyway, I dont know what my BP is but my HIGH norm was 90-/60 when I was salt loading so.... I am guessing it is pretty low about now.
I did not drink a lot of water and my legs were swollen /bad sock lines. So, I am about to take the water more seriously.
I did do my MLD twice and slept with my feet on 2 pillows. It felt like the shopping was more than enough exercise
On another note, Kira helped me to get the email of KATHY FLEMING who replied to me this AM. She WILL see me, but does not take insurance. I am concerned about the price, esp at this time of year, but really think I should try to see her. Maybe it will be my Christmas gift to myself . ( my, how things have changed since last yr!!!!)OH, as for the TAI CHI breather...when I do the Sansone walks, I incorporate them in! First, I use them as a warm up before I put the DVD in. Later , at some points where she is doing lots of repetetive arm movements, I do one or two of those and then play catch up with her. I think it is a great exercise warm up.
Tai-chi sounds like a wonderful idea - go for it !

Awesome, GMA.
You go girl!!!!!!!

Hugz and Dawne--I too was afraid to fly after LE. I finally flew from TN to TX in September to go to National Lymphedema Network conference. I did the pumps a lot and drank water. I ached some but no swelling. My therapist also went to conference and we flew together so I figured I would have had some help if trouble occurred. I really want to go to Panama where I worked for 23 yrs. The flying does not scare me but the tropical climate does.
Going to go get Tina in a couple of hours. It is raining hard here today so I will only be able to show her the dam from car then we will go to community center to walk. At least she will be able to tell you the dam does exist!
Have already done my MLD and MLD exercises (I never skip) and am ready to roll! Let's see how much walking we get in. At least our jaws will be flapping!

I'm putting my sleeve on...big step for me. I get too lax about my sleeve lately. Haven't done the Tai Chi breathing exercise, but I got inspired to buy a whole DVD on Tai Chi. I did Tai Chi years ago when I was rehabbing after knee surgery. Great, gentle exercise for rehabbing, but I couldn't keep track of the forms. Some of them can go on pretty long. Also got a Tai Chi iPhone app, it's amazing.

Purple--The exercises I am referring are the LeBed Healthy Steps exercises for LE. I do the 15 min opening every day. Tina is the Tina that started this Exercise Thread. She is visiting here from Philadelphia.
Went to get Tina today. It was raining fairly steadily. We drove so I could show her my dam trail and steps before we went to the community center. When I drove to the bottom of the steps to show her she looked at me and said "I will do it if you will do it." So there we are in the rain with no unbrella climbing the steps. Tina was great. We were gasping some at the top but recouped quickly. We then went back down them to the car and went quite damp to the community center where we logged in 3 miles. We did not have enough time for more. We then went to my house for lunch before I took her back to her friend's house. We took a picture of ourselves at the top of the dam but I have been unable to get it on here. It was a close up and we were wet so it may be best it would not transfer. I will put on FB Carol. We do wish you had been here with us. Were your ears ever burning? We were laughing at how we were showing each other how we did our MLD to each other when we had dinner at your daughter's house when we were at LE Summit. It was good to see her again. I hope to get up her way soon to walk her "killer hill" with her.

Nibanna and Tina, I am faithfully doing my tai chi breather, In fact I just got back from my 40 min walk and did it right outside my office building in front of 4 lanes of traffic parked at red lights staring at me. Hopefully someone in those cars will get the drift and start exercising because of me! I am a bit shy to do it but seeing that Tina can jog on a train in her room and cars watch her I figure I can do the same! Thanks Tina for the encouragement and being such a good role model.
Becky, Oh thank you for giving us your Tina experiences and all. So you two flew up the steps. Awesome! And 3 miles to boot! whoo hoo! Will you get to take her to the dam tomorrow? OH I wish I could see the picture...................................Rats. For sure you get extra points for talking and walking at the same time!

WOW!
That sounds like so much fun (and work!) Becky. Maybe by the weekend ( when you have more time ?) you can figure out how to post it here. We would love to see it.Thx for your response. I have done the Lebed, but I think I am skeptical about it helping...then again, I know nothing!
I did not wear my sleeve today! Did MLD this AM and put the sleeve and glove on. I had to attend a funeral and decided I could not go to church with the glove. Looks very inappropriate for the occassion I wore the sleeve almost 2 hrs before I left the house . Aftwerward, we all went out to an event. I ended up having to carry a chair with my ' good arm' ( UGH) In any case, I got home by suppertime and it seemed like : " why bother now ?" Needless to say, I did not exercise without the sleeve and will do my MLD later. My hand and wrist are always the worst and I would say my hand looks better than usual if anything! Beginning to really wonder about this compression.

Purple, You may find that you can get away without wearing garments for an odd occasion. You really have to play around and get to know your body. Also sounds like you might have a compression problem. Have you tried wearing less or more comnpression and if so what were your results? DANG LE and garment stuff....it will drive you crazy if you don't jump off a bridge first!
Going to simmer down and do a tai chi brthr before I jump off a bridge myself. And then Lebeds before bed.

Purple you posted about heat just as I was composing my post. I hope others chime in!
Let's go get a cold glass of water together. It"s one thing we CAN have.grrrrrr

hugz, I'll drink to that. To cold water, *clink*

nibbana, TOO FUNNY!
Just did my tai chi brthr. Now lebeds and then I am DONE. No more LE care for the day. And Off comes these stinking garments soon. Hum.... a record... it's still early evening here.

In a way, yes.
My first ' real' glove / RX was like a VICE ( cant wait to get the ones the fitter ordered :>) I am currently wearing OTC gloves with much better results for the hands.
The sleeve sometimes bothers me. The only time I've 'played around' was today- not intentionally , but it worked out that way.
My fitter has 2 more sleeves and some RX gloves coming. I am hoping they are ' right' because if not, I will buy OTC gloves and keep replacing before I cut into my hands that way again.
Just did a good long session of MLD, and I am off to bed!
Nite all!

I was in meetings all day and wish I could have been walking with LE friends instead! I got 6.4 miles in total today, some outside going from building to building, but most from my morning jog. Also did Lebed and some other stretches. And drank tons of water.

Went for a walk at lunch time. Warmest part of the day right? Walked south for a while, and that was fine, turned around to walk back and omg was it cold, the wind was blowing in my face and I didn't know if we were going to get back, then my stupid eyes started running so I'm walking blind into the wind. Got home and tripped on the last step I needed to take before I was in the garage out of the cold. Grrrr I blame LE as in my former life I'd never have been out walking in this weather. Twisted my ankle just enough to make the 5000 pre bedtime (indoor) steps ouchy.

Oh Cindy, hope your ankle feels better tomorrow.

Thanks Linda. I don't believe in curses, broken mirrors, black cats crossing my path... but sometimes I wonder who is sitting there sticking pins into a little me.

- Cindy I know the feeling, sometimes I think there must be a target on my back.

hahahahahhaha!
Cindyl I am sorry to be laughing at your post, but thank you !Sometimes we just have to laught at ourselves. (laugh or cry ?)
About 5 yrs ago I was trotting with my dog in the park. That wasnt too smart because I really couldnt trot and my dog was a lean, fiercely athletic happy go lucky guy. At one point, the dog started to go a bit faster and a LARGE tree root, obscured by my sunglasses was there. I went UP UP UP - but landed on my feet. I immediately said: " Thank you, Jesus !" Yep, it blurted right out of my mouth No thought to being politically correct, sorry- I just felt it, and I said it.Within 2 seconds there was another root, my dog took off and this time I landed on my knee and broke it.
Damn COPD! I wouldnt have been out trying to get healthy if I had already been healthy!!!!!
Your post made me chuckle and really reminded me of that.Laugh or cry, my friend. Your knee is not broken so I say - laugh !

RE: Laughing at myself now....
Ok, I went without the sleeve for one lousy day, and guess what ? Just getting ready for work and thinking I am all set to leave , did MLD, fed dogs, made lunch etc ... but do you ever get that odd feeling that you forgot something? Look ma, no sleeve !
So, instead of rushing to get it on and not be late, I had to stop to tell you gals - we all need to laugh at ourselves now and then!
Have a good one.0 -
Oh I laughed. And yes, nothing seems to be broken, although I do have a cute little bruise on my butt. So yeah. I feel like I'm always gritching about some little thing, I honestly can't complain about the overall breast cancer experience (other than the mere fact of having bc) My doctors, nurses, techs, therapist et. al. have been kind, and professional. My insurance has be good about paying for most things. I've healed well and not suffered many se's that others have had to deal with. But it as you all know there are a million pin pricks, anyone of which I'd have shrugged off in my former life. But it adds up you know? Even a million grains of sand are heavy. I'm so glad I have you ladies to complain too, so I can continue to fool my friends, family, and co-workers into thinking there's nothing wrong, nothing at all...

Good humour going on here
Girls if you want an UNDERARMOUR tee designed for truncal then please respond to my UNDERARMOUR Advertisement thread asking BCO to put in a word for us. The more responses the better. Getting up now to do tai chi breather.0 -
Haven't been on here in a bit - still trying to do MLD and Lebeds daily, but I'm better with MLD than Lebeds. Ran an 8K race Sunday - I'm slow but steady, and the breathing and rhythmic motion when I run seems to help my truncal LE. Unfortunately I'm scheduled for outpatient surgery this afternoon on my abdomen - I had a DIEP 4 years ago, and an errant stitch has migrated and abcessed, and it needs to be removed. As you can imagine, it's wreaked havoc with my truncal LE. I'll be glad when it's cleaned out and I can heal.
Cindy - ouch!! Be careful everyone!

Natsfan, faboulous that you are running, I wish you a speedy recovery so you can tie on those shoes again. Lets us know how it goes.
