It is fun to talk to people who know the characters and places where I live.
I actually posted this to you Sally....on another thread because I am a dork and cannot keep track of where I am, where I belong, where I have been or where it is I am going.........Excuse the repeat to those who may have read this already
I actually grew up in a little boro called West View and it had a small amusement park.
I took care of a woman who worked at Boggs and Buhl as a seamstress. "Little" Mary. My grandmother worked for Dravos during as did a number of women ..back in the day. It was that Heinz or Bell Telephone. Having worked in a nursing home when I was a teen, I knew more retired operators than most We had one woman who had retired from Heinz and it was rumored that she knew the recipe for Heinz ketchup, so every year at Christmas a small group of (alleged executives would come see her. I did see the group on several occasions, but have no idea if it was indeed the execs from Heinz or not. She lived to be @ 100 or 102. She was in a room full of Marys-seemed to be the popular (biblical) name to give a girl. We would address them as Mary and their Last initial. Usually worked for our purpose cause they would all say "yes?" when we would call out to 'Mary' and not specify.
Jenkins Arcade is gone too. My old HS friend's father was one of the
people who helped construct PPG plaza, which was such a big deal for the
city. It remains a place where I like to sit after football games and
have coffee. City life dies down early anymore, but we do have an
awesome theater district and art scene. Which surprises many who visit
here. Our local PBS station does such a great job showcasing the city.
Chris Fennimore showcases the food and regional influences of the many
ethnicity in our region and Rick Sebak does the spots on our region. If
you ever have a chance to see any of their work, it is super. And I have
gone to many of the places as a result of the shows and gathered a lot
of recipes from Chris' shows tooFYI-the Hornes building is
primarily owned by Highmark now, however they continue the tradition of
lighting the tree on the side of the building.I do remember also
that every Easter we got new gloves, dress, hat, patent leather shoes
and a little purse. It was as important if not more so than Christmas. I
will look for a picture of me and my sissy with our Easter outfits.0 -
Sally..................Happy Hermits are fine.............know how many wish they could say that.......sometimes you just find joy in vegging at home...........nothing wrong with that...........
When my husband was alive and we went to the shore house every weekend....it was wonderful........have a nice dinner at home.....rent a couple good movies, and turn on the fireplace when it was chilly and just enjoy each other's company................
Wow how I wish I could do that one more time........just one more time...........

Sorry Teka LOL. I can get carried away and try to distract people
My friend lived in Middleton then Goshen then New Paltz and one other place I cannot remember. I really like New Paltz. (most liekly because it spoke to my inner hippie) My Uncle had lived in Schenectady (sp?) in the mid 80's. Worked for St Regis paper company. I loved it up there. Or maybe I liked it because he was there and I loved him more than anyone in this world. He died when I was in HS and to this day Miss him. My mother had been devastated by his death for so many years I was worried about her. But she and he had lived through the best and worst of times together. Stories for another day!
Loved driving through New York in the summer. So lush. Love the Hudson Valley. A place I could live if I had the money haha! We went to Westpoint and walked around. WOW! what an amazing campus and the young men and women were so impressive!
I love the east coast, however, admittedly have never been beyond Chicago. Shame on me. There;s still time......to do that cross country tour.......I need to do it sooner rather than later. I just committed to new flooring for my downstairs, 3 landings and all of the stairs.
I am excited to finally have this done. I want to sell this place soon and one step closer than I was!!!!
Be well ladies and hugz cause I know some are going through some hard times now. I wish I could lessen the burden....

Good luck with your plans........
Piper you lessen the burden just by being you......your such fun.......and we discuss Pa. because we love Pa...........have been all across the U.S from Pa to Washington State....and there is No Place Like HOme........we get bragging rites.............we are a tough State who is known for loving their sports team win or lose.....................
By the way girlfriend................Chip Kelly and the Eagles got rid of Vick........he's gone.......the Jets took him............LOL Good luck N.Y..............glad he's gone from here...........they also got rid of LeSean Jackson....great player, but a real Hot Dog, plus......Shady.......He is talking to the Redskins I think........maybe McNabb talked him into going there.............I also heard the 49ers want him, and he is from Ca. so maybe that will be his choice....
Got a cute picture for you Piper.......this is Shea eating her very first "meatball"......G.Grandaughter number 3..........

Piper,
I've been a lurker on this thread - difficult for me to post on them all. I LOVE hearing your stories of PA!! My father was born there and it's so wonderful to read. It's been a very long time since I've been there - I hope to visit again someday

Piper such fun sharing our Pa stories........I went into a building in Pittsburgh when I was there for Kevin's games at Carnagie Mellon......it was a really tall building, and there was a spot if you stood on it, it represented something that happened in Pittsburgh.....thought was sports.....really cool....wish I could remember what it was..........will have to ask my daughter......
Maybe if we ever have a reunion with FK. she is in Pa. now, Blondie also 20 minutes from me, we can meet........especially when you decide to take your tour..........
How cool would it be if we could get together for a Pittsburgh, Eagles game in my son's Club Box......now that would be great........

No worries Teka I am a fricking chatter!! There were people who used to like my ability to not focus on work and anything bothersome at hand. Sometimes I worry peeps will think me unsympathetic or unkind.
LOLz Ducky...And here I really need to do my homework cuz I didn't realize Vick was dumped errrr he chose another venue. LOLOLOL
Shit.
I am so ousted...I need to work on my present tense Eagles.
Funny thing is I think I am super hyper sensitive.....but have a lag time with it....
argghhhh

Slow...........when you do, my house will be the meeting place...............you are a great person, and such a class act.................how nice it would be if everyone was like you...........it must be us Pa. connected ladies.........LOL..............we watch each other's back......
Welcome Slow, so happy to see you here........don't be a stranger.......know you from other threads, but you are surely welcome here........anyone with a Pa. background is ok in my book........LOL

Piper this is my grandson who played for Carnagie Mellon, now he is married living in Chicago working for J.P. Morgan Chase as a V.P. Financial Analyst......
11-0 season. He was the QB, and took them to the Championship....first in 19 years.

TY Ducky for sharing. Like everyone in your family (I really mean this) He is a looker.
How wonderful to have such a loving and wonderful family.
Most of my family are out of touch, fragmented, disconnected and dysfunctional
I am jealous
But I did get to pick my friends and the few I have are amazing!!
0 -
Thanks Ducky! You're a sweetheart Cute Grandson!
0 -
Thanks Piper.......your friends are amazing because you are............
The guy next to him is my oldest son.......he is 56.......and his Godfather...........

Slow......and a wonderful person......he will be married a year on April 6th, and makes settlement on his new home in Chicago on April 3rd......I miss him so much.....I helped raise him and his brother while my daughter worked to be vested.............She worked for SmithKline Pharma......retired and 10 years later returned to work, and is now a Director of Human Resources.........at GlaxoSmithKline in Philly.......another daughter works there too............both have 25, and 30 years of service with the company.............I worked there for 20 years too......in Marketing Research...........fun days........

It's so difficult when they move away. You want them to be happy, but miss them so much.

Are the streetcars still running in Pittsburgh? DH is a rail fan, he'd like to know
Downtown for me was Cincinnati and mom and I both wore our Sunday best to go. Many years later took DD down, wearing jeans. Thinking the whole time I hope mom doesn't catch us.
Vick should have been on that plane that went down, damnit! I will never forgive or forget.
0 -
Most of Philly never forgave him either..........I have a daughter who stopped watching the Eagles when they took him on...............what he did was horrendous........
0 -
Slow......I did not see any trolley's in Pittsburgh when I was there.........now Philly still has them but that does not mean they don't....maybe I just didn't see any..
I did go on the car that goes up that big hill to the top........that was really cool.....then we ate dinner at a restaurant at the top.......called Shiloh............
0 -
I was so glad to see him go, but I knew he was......Foles did such an amazing job last year....he turned the Eagles around, and made them winners..........and just a stand up guy.........and now we have Sanchez...........both easy on the eyes.................then Jackson gone, good move, and now we have a great team with the problems gone......
Sometimes it only takes a couple people to turn a fun time into a bummer time.........you wonder why people do the things they do, but it takes all kind............glad they are gone.......nasty people are never welcomed or missed when they leave........go Eagles........

I asked Ducky. We haven't been there since the early 70s.
Teka, yes, that's the monster.
0 -
I don't know who Vick is, or what he did - but, it doesn't sound good.
0 -
Michael Vick, pro football convicted of dog fighting, animal abuse and torture
0 -
Oh gosh. That IS awful.
0 -
Piper I went on this while I was in Pittsburgh......so cool............
0 -
He isn't. It made national news when his DD wanted a dog.
The inclines are cool!
