  • As a website developer and website owner with over a decade of experience in this kind of business, I would strongly suggest the creation of a Facebook page for the website as well. with billions of websites out there it would require a lot of effort to do a proper SEO to get the website to show in Google results, or a financial effort to pay for advertising it. As things stand now, creating a Facebook page to represent the website is one of the easiest and most efficient way to make the website known to others. Because, what would be the use of having a website that nobody else but us visits?

Morning seachain. Glad you are here :) Thanks for your input.

Good point about a Facebook page seachain. I've been building, marketing and promoting websites since 2000, understand all aspects the business, and would set up a site with best-practise SEO in mind. I'm confident we'd achieve good search engine rankings for very many search terms. I'm also a copywriter and editor so I could oversee the content quality.

I'm expecting to create a site that is a repository for all the pink crap that October now signifies for many, and a site which is used by all media interested in exposing the pinkwashing industry.

I just saw the following news article on the CBS website and find it to be noteworthy. I think our voices are being heard:

    CBS NEWS November 18, 2015, 7:09 AM

Dangerous chemicals in cosmetics spur action by lawmaker

Americans spend more than $50 billion every year on beauty and skin care products. But there's growing concern that some of the products we use to look good actually could be causing harm.

Now a bipartisan group of lawmakers and industry leaders says that has got to change, reports CBS News correspondent Jan Crawford.

"It's because of the addition of some chemicals - chemicals for staying power, chemicals for shine," said California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who is leading a bipartisan effort in Congress to give the FDA more power to ensure skin and beauty products are safe. "Our laws should provide for adequate testing of chemicals before they go into widely used products."

Cosmetics and skin care products are largely unregulated. Today's products are made with chemicals like formaldehyde -- used in products from nail polish to some chemical hair straighteners - which is known to cause cancer. Other commonly used cosmetic preservatives include propylparaben and lead acetate, used in hair dye.

Under the proposed law, the FDA would test whether those chemicals are being used at safe levels. If not, they can force a recall.

Doctors say it's long overdue, not only for adults, but for teenagers, whose developing bodies are more at risks.

"Ignorance is not bliss," said dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, who said she treats patients weekly for adverse reactions to chemicals in beauty products.

"We are just assuming all of our hair care, skin care, and our personal care products are safe," said Dr. Tanzi. "Well, I think we really need to look very closely at some of these ingredients because we know that at higher concentrations they can be toxic."

Tanzi says the biggest offenders are hair products, especially straighteners, and newer nail polishes that last more than a week - all largely unregulated.

That's not the story in other countries. The European Union bans more than 1,000 chemicals from personal care products. Of those, the U.S. bans 11. Gregg Renfrew said the lack of oversight led her to start Beautycounter, a natural beauty products company.

"I think the beauty industry is the last industry that's been forced to clean up its act," Renfrew said.

She was on Capitol Hill Tuesday to urge Congress to pass the tougher new legislation.

"Things that I've been washing my babies in, things that I had been putting on my body while I was pregnant, things that I had been putting on my body for decades, to find out that those ingredients were not safe for my health was incredibly disappointing and scary, quite frankly," Renfrew said.

Feinstein said she expects the bill to pass -- not only are legislators on both sides of the aisle supporting it, but so too is the industry. She said the companies also want to know what's safe and what's not, and that consumers and beauty salons deserve to know.

TheDivine- Thank you! That is amazing! I'm so HAPPY to see our concerns reaching a broader audience! Well done ladies!

As a side note, I was contacted blindly by a PHD candidate who is doing her thesis on this very topic. She'd read a post I'd made somewhere and searched me via FB. She is interviewing me via Skype on Friday as she wanted some "real voices".

And thanks for the link. I'll be Facebombing later!

Just got an email from Breast Cancer Action about a Senate committee evaluating a bill to reform the law on cosmetics. If you enter your email address you can tell our Senatore to sign the bill. Unfortunately, I live in DC and it won't let me do it as we only have a representative.

Jackie, that is great that the PhD candidate tracked you down. Good luck on your skype interview.

Kathi, thanks for telling us about your email. I looked up the info on Breast Cancer Action's website, and here is a link you can follow for those who want their Senators to get on board:

People here might like to sign the Change.org petition to the NFL asking them to include men in their breast cancer awareness campaign:

    Thanks folks.

Just a head's up on the Pinktobersucks website. I'll have a draft of the topics that will appear as menu choices this week. Have just started searching through the 2780 posts on this thread to get an idea of what issues interest people. Then I'll post the results here for comments.

Glad you're on board Traveltext. To think from this thread a whole new world will open up to educate people about male breast cancer and pinkwashing. I am searching for hospitals in my area that offer Look Good Feel Better programs so I can send a letter to bring awareness to the harm some of the products can cause. If I can find the name of the person who runs the program, I will send a letter to them directly but am also considering sending to the president, community outreach people, PR office and anyone else who might have a say in this area at the hospital. Now my big problem is writing a decent sounding letter. For some reason, I don't feel like I'm articulating the problem well. Have several drafts going, so hopefully a good finished product will be forthcoming. I figure with this type of crusade this type of letter can go out at any time of the year since the LGFB classes are offered year round.

Took a look at the google pull for sexualization of breast cancer. 25,200. That's less than the firs google of 43,100. Came across this article in the New York Times from Nov 14th

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/magazine/14FOB-wwln-t.html?_r=0

I don't want to draw folks here for lots of reasons. The biggest is it's our place. We have lurkers all over BCO. I doubt they are here without a reason. Their own or a family members. Outsiders drawn here may wander in a voyeuristic manner. That thought is creepy.

That's why Travels endeavors are a good thing.

Well, I'm up to page 23 in the thread (October 2012). Just trying to capture the full range of topics and cover the extent of pinkwashing in its various forms.

Sas, I can see you've already made a list of slogans. I'll leave you to provide an edited list for the site section titles "slogans". I liked there ones:

    THINK BEFORE YOU PINK

    RE-THINK PINK

    I Proudly Pick Non-Pink Products

    "Think before you Pink"

    Stop Pinkwashing, Start Researching

I wanted a breast cancer cure, but all I got was this lousy T-shirt

We Will Not Wear Pink,We Will Not Back Down,Give Us a Cure or Go Home

glennie. I have a page for links to great articles, and that NYT one will be on the list.
