Welcome Glennie and Ava, and Lyzzysmom, and LLiz. LLiz I highly recommend a canine companion on this journey. Not sure I would have made it through okay without my little blind sweet Lewie, always by my side.
Spookiesmom- spookie is darling - of course- but I LOVE Kris- who looks a lot like my youngest, Brian, who is now nine months old and still crazy hyper (until he drops like right now). I love poodles, SO smart.

Hello I am new here and I love these discussions. I not only feel closer to my dogs I also feel closer to everyone here because I can safely voice my concerns and worries and not be told its not a big deal. I have a miniature dachshund named Ginger and a miniature schnauzer named Cole. They keep me company and really make my day. They also will listen to me and give me kisses.

I haven't checked in here for a while - somehow this dropped off my favorites list. I had to catch up on a few pages! First, WW and Monis - a belated condolence on the loss of your furkids. However long they live, it's never enough time.
And WW, so sorry about the extra surgeries! Your "guilty party" looks like a min pin - is that right? We share our home with a red min pin - he's 10 now and we got him as a rescue 3 years ago. We've never had a min pin before, and wow - are they fun dogs, but are also quite a handful. I now understand 100% why all the breed books say that a min pin is NOT a dog for the first-time dog owner.
LLiz - an older rescue dog might be perfect for you - much easier to integrate into your household right now than a needy puppy. Love all the dog and kitty pictures everyone's been posting lately - reminds me of the Dog of the Day website - are any of you familiar with that site? www.dogoftheday.com It's a very simple site. People submit pictures of their dogs and a little write up about the dog. The websites posts one each day. I have it set as my home page at work, so I get to meet a new canine first thing every morning when I fire up the computer. They also have the Cat of the Day and the Pet of the Day websites as well.

Have a great day everyone, I am off to get my port removed today- woohoo!!! so excited. and then another recon or two next month. But first things first. I loved the port during chemo and herceptin but wont be too sorry to see it go.
And I have plenty of puppy kisses to come back to this afternoon - times three now!

This is my last dog, Rocco. He was rescued from a fighting ring. His ear flaps were cut off and he had bite scars on his face. He was just the BEST DOG EVER. He adored babies and tolerated the antics of small children. One time in Central Park, a toddler grabbed him by the upper lip and pulled! He just stood there,, like,, Help Mom,, get her off me!
He wore this costume on the Halloween after 9/11. We walked thru Central Park this way and people told us that it cheered them up to see him dressed up this way.
He was my birthday present the year after I moved to NYC. He moved to FL with us and I got custody after the divorce. (MY DOG, MINE)
As much as I love Ava,, I still miss Rocco. He was very special.

I lived on E 97th St, between 5th and Madison. Just on the edge of Spanish Harlem. It was nice being only a half block from Central Park. I thinked that saved me psychologically for the 5 years I lived there. Oct 98 to Oct 2003. Was there for 9/11 and the big black-out of 2003. And I worked at (ready?) Memorial Sloan -Kettering!YAY!! for port removal !!

This is one of my fave NY / Rocco stories. So I'm sitting in Central Park with my then-hubby's elderly aunt and Rocco. An unknown man with a baby walks up to us. And I'm talking a BABY,, not walking not talking ,,, maybe 1 year old at the most. And he says to me: "My baby likes dogs. Is your dog friendly? Can my baby say hi to him?"
I'm stunned. I lived on the edge of Spanish Harlem, where ganstas fought pit bulls and mothers would see us coming down the street and pull their children behind them. And he was this guy,, with a baby,, wanting to say hi to my dog.
So I said, Yeah, he's friendly. Rocco is already excited cuz he knows he's about to get attention. I put him in a sit and squatted down next to him. The guy squatted down with his baby. Rocco kissed the baby and made her laugh. It was a lovely visit. Then he thanked me and walked off.
I told the aunt,, where's a camera when I need one? That was a Kodak moment.

Oh no glennie - you were right in the middle of 9/11. That must have been so difficult.
I'm originally from Rockaway Beach, NY and they lost so many people. Then they had that plane crash not too long afterwards - right in my old neighborhood. Then they were hit with hurricane Sandy. New York has really been through the wringer. But, you can't break the spirit of a New Yorker!
Such a wonderful story. Rocco sounds like a sweetheart. Definitely a Kodak moment!! It's nice to have such wonderful memories.

It was really hard. I still find it difficult to talk about it. The loss of all those fire fighters just really got to me.People were amazing, though. They really helped each other out. When the blackout happened, I walked from 68th St to 97th St to get home, as no subways and it was impossible to get a bus. People were standing outside giving you water as you walked by. Stores were giving away their ice cream before it melted. It was something. Anyone who think New Yorkers are cold and unfeeling is totally wrong.

I'm good. I have to say my 5 years up there were a real eye opener. I'm a Southerner and I had a certain opinion of Yankees,, especially New Yorkers. And living up there changed my tune. Really, we are all just people with different accents. There are nice people and mean people every where you live. You just gotta seek out the good ones and ignore the bad ones if you can.

Glennie, we were in NY at the same time. We were in Seattle during Sept 11, but then we caught a flight back right after. Everyone we knew was in NY then.

Thanks to everyone for helping me celebrate the port removal. I'm rather sore today but just in that area- NOTHING like the rest of the cr@p we go through with cancer. Easiest procedure so far.

Any advice for service dogs and hot weather, I tried
some rubber like socks and she didn't like them, I did
get her a bed that is raise on four legs like a traplene
and it help in the house, But I have to sit with Faith,
She spoils me and I spoil her. I am looking at sock
that are like slippers and go up to her knees, She is getting
a haircut 80.00 hair cut Tuesday and will be a drive up
and I just found out they will not wash her. Its hard to get her
in the tub sometimes. Thanks Debbie

not sure what all you are asking. Is Faith a service dog? Why do you think she needs socks? Most dogs don't like things on their feet. If you are walking her, let her stroll on grass. There are products that people in snow country use, a good pet store should be able to help with that. I'm in Fl, only heard about this!
Beds. Yes, the raised one would help with air circulation under her.
How big is she? For $80 a grooming session should include a bath and blow dry. I'd look for a different mobile groomer that can do it all.

I agree- mobile groomers are the best!!! With three dogs now it is too hard to wrangle them to the groomer. Thank gosh for the very wonderful man who comes to our house with his truck to do it.
I worry about my pups feet on the hot pavement as well but they seem to be unaware, they could move over to the grass if it was hurting them but they dont. I guess the pads on their feet are so much thicker than ours, that maybe the discomfort isnt as bad as we imagne it?
Debbie you are sweet, you have a very special bond with your dog, I can see that. She is lucky!

Thanks I gave her a bath, it was hard and now tomorrow at 1 she getting
her hair cut, it was 93 today and is still very hot out,
Ginger is so cute,
I am very lucky to have a comfort and Service dog since I live alone in a
wheelchair. I still have trouble with dogs coming in the store and coming
after her. But someday they will change the law. were dogs like ginger
will be welcome and mean dogs wont, Need to rest I fell and hit my head
3 days ago. still sore. But Faith was there, I was weak from the heat.
