Gardening, anyone?

A weirdly warm fall so far in Michigan, so we haven't had a killing frost quite yet, but enough of a chill that most of my garden's shut down for the winter. Except for the chard! Criminy. But I've been collecting the seeds from my overenthusiastic morning glory vines. About a pint so far.

I agree that Lucy may have to tide us over. Thursday it was 70 degrees here. Last night we had gale force winds bring in freezing temps and sleet. I have brought in my hibiscus and mandevilla trying to save something. sigh.
Love the orchids, Lucy. I also see you have a Christmas cactus. it was motivating me to get one. I used to have a beautiful one.

Lucy, Is the rock mulch to save water? It's very attractive. It's 49F here and raining.

We're expecting "cold" weather to come in tonight, so I decided to take a field trip to Bellingrath Gardens for my last chance to see their annual mum exhibit. My timing was unusually good for me; workers were just beginning to remove the mums to make room for their holiday light show. Lucy, I took your advice and shot lots of pictures so that the mums will be mine forever! I'm attaching one of the shots, along with couple of other pictures of my favorite spots in the gardens. I usually go alone so that I can roam around and take pictures in my own time, but I kept thinking about all of you and wished that you were there with me...

Gorgeous trees Lucy. I had to look them up and unfortunately it probably wouldn't survive where we live. Too big to. Still, I love seeing the different foliages from everyone's locales.

Lucy- I LOVE that house in the upper photo, very modern and cool. And the trees, just beautiful. Wish I could fly there tonight, we are having wicked storms with rounds of hail here this evening. Eeek!

Such pretty pictures! Gorgeous botanic gardens, Scottie and Angela.
Lucy, I thought, oh that ponsiana tree looks kind of like a flamboyant tree - then I googled it and its the same thing. They call them flamboyant trees in the Carribbean, and they bloom late May or June. So pretty.

Twohobbies ..That very interesting about the Flamboyant tree ..I've never heard it called that ..but it's a good name because it definitely is a flamboyant tree. !!!🙂
Lookforward ..which part of Australia are you thinking of coming too ? I'm in Queensland ...near Brisbane ..maybe we could catch up if you're coming this way ..

Teka,
Absolutely gorgeous!
Hopefully this will be just the beginning of a string of snowscapes that will replace the beautiful fall colors that all of you have posted.
I'm keeping an eye on the camellia buds around town, and will hopefully be able to share some good photos.
Best wishes to all of my fellow gardeners!

Teka, We have enough snow in the mountain passes to open the ski resorts. Should probably be prepared for rocks though. The weather channel predicted snow in Seattle next week. Ha! It never snows when predicted. All our snow storms in the city are a surprise and paralyze the city. People laugh at our gridlock - until they visit and see 17% grade hills on downtown streets. I love the way snow looks, but it would be hard to shovel all winter long.

We are supposed to get our first snow tomorrow. I don't mind because it now has turned truly cold, leaves are gone so everything is pretty much gray - gray sky, gray bare trees.
Angela, I remember the first time I saw Camelias blooming in January. I grew up in Chicago and we had moved to SC. I couldn't believe anything would be blooming so early. I had to look twice when I saw flowers.

Happy Holidays to all! While my family sleeps, I have been on pinterest enjoying various interesting gardening items. Fruit trees in containers, upside down gardens, plants that clean the air, teacup gardens. This is how I get through winter!
Love your gift to yourself, Lucy. I adore cactus and succulents too!

Merry Xmas. I got a lovely Xmas box from a family member with three amaryllis that is probably going to be spectacular in another month or so! Will post when it is all in bloom. Can't wait to see the colors of the flowers!

Teka, loved that you captured your cat in that photo.

Teka- love it and love the photo bomb with Teka the cat too!

Teka that is an adorable picture.

Teka, Make sure she doesn't eat it. I got out of house plant mode when I had a cat who would try anything green. . . and eat the whole thing if she thought it was tasty. She was especially fond of African violets.

Teka- that is beautiful!
My xmas box with three of them are starting to have green shoots! Seeing yours reminded me to go water mine again too, so thank you!

Teka: Beautiful contrast with the snow.

I agree! The contrast with the snow just makes the color pop even more! Thanks for giving us the name.
BTW, Several months ago many of you gave me names of gardening catalogs that still come in the mail. Several arrived within the last few weeks and I've had the best time marking pages and making lists to order!
Have been thinking of all of you in other parts of the states. We have nothing to compare to the cold that many of you are experiencing, but it is cold enough to keep me inside! We actually look forward to snow in Mobile; it is very rare and usually calls for some serious celebration. We don't have any road equipment so everyone "has" to stay home. We thought me might have a few flurries last night, but nothing came through except cold, miserable rain. My DH is from New York and constantly reminds me that snow is not fun when you have to live with it for days/weeks at a time.
Stay warm and cozy everyone!

A friend just told be about a Strawberry tree - grows 5-8 feet tall and does produce strawberries that are questionably edible - quite tart. I found some info about a dwarf variety that is 5-8 feet tall and grows in zone 7-9. Looks lovely and thinking about getting one come early spring because I do not want a large tree, but love year around green.
