Gardening, anyone?

The squirrel we have that comes up on our birdfeeder, climbs up the railing and jumps the short distance to the feeder. It goes face first into the food.

Someone once told me that squirrels are the best decision makers. They see "something they want" and decide how to get it!

Enerva, I love all of your plants and their new pots. Any shade of purple is my favorite color!
M0mmy, yay for peas poking their heads up. They'll be giving you plenty of crunchy sweet peas in no time.
It got overcast yesterday evening so I snapped a picture of my garden. Is it just me or do my plant markers make it look like a graveyard?

This is from my kitchen garden last winter. Squirrel had better plans for my twine.
Same winter garden. Jazz looking for lizards.

Lori- LOL on your grave markers. NO, I did not think that at all. But now???? you've put that visual in my head. Actually I just so fascinated with your straw beds. Love it!

Gardennerd, thank you! It turned out better than I thought it would. I was actually worried it wouldn't grow. I've been taking weekly pictures of everything so I can track the growth and see if I'll do another one next year. DH says YES! He's been enjoying the radishes we've been getting. The ground here is to hard for any root vegetables. Your squirrel is a real stinker. It probably used it to spruce up it's nest for the winter. Jazz needs to go squirrel hunting instead lol
This little stinker was watching me paint yesterday! I'm glad he didn't throw anything at me like the squirrels here like to do!

Lori - cute pic of the raccoon observing you. Jazz is not much of a hunter. But she does something on occasion I wish I could get on video. She will lie on the porch and pretty much ignore the squirrels eating at the birdfeeders just 10 ft away. She'll casually get up and walk to the birdbath for a drink which puts her about 5 ft. away from the squirrels and then she'll just lazily walk toward them. They don't generally get alarmed with her around, so they continue to eat and play. And then she'll take a few running leaps at them and stops. And they scatter to the trees and bushes. Then comes the good part once she stops. She turns around and gives me a huge smile. She has the devil in her. I was just flabbergasted the first time she did that. Who knew? . . . she has a sense of humor.

Next phase is to stake up the plants that need them and to put up the metal fence pieces that we use for supporting the peas, beans and cucumbers

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. My cholla is now blooming.....

Jazzy, such a striking shade of pink! I love it!
I took a walk down to check on our peach tree (deer) and so far so good. While I was there I checked on the other trees for bugs etc and was shocked to see cherries on our cherry tree! Not very many but we have cherries that lasted long enough to ripen. I wonder if they are still there?
My trumpet vine has gone crazy! I need to get it tied down. My hubby wants me to cut it down but when I do that I'm fighting hundreds of the things all over the area! It's getting ready to bloom and I'm looking forward to having coffee on the deck and watching the hummingbirds.
My sage has bloomed and the hummingbirds love it!

Lori, the straw bale garden is looking great!. Love the racoon picture too. He was just wanting his picture painted too. :-)
Gardennerd, the squirrel and Jazz photos are great! I love the fact that Jazz played trickster with the squirrels. LOL

Jazzy, another great cactus flower!
Lori, hurrah on the cherries and peaches! I think i have 1 peach without bug damage. :-( I try to garden organically but I sure get upset having to share all my fruit with the bugs!

Jazzygirl- Love the flowering Cholla. I'm totally ignorant regarding Cacti . . . how long do the flowers last? Your blooms have a beautiful color.
Lori- Your pics are just what I love about spring. The Trumpet vine is nice looking. Trumpet Vine in our area are more of a nuisance, they can pop up anywhere and hard to get rid of. On an old pecan grove we have there is a trumpet vine that grew up the height of one Pecan tree . . . ?40-50 feet?. I kept seeing this bit of color pop through the branches up high. Pecan trees don't have a flower blossom. After some investigating, I found vines growing up this old Pecan tree bigger than my arm. I've got plenty of babies popping up on our home property. And YES, they grow fast. UGH!
I love this forum. So nice to learn about different types of gardners and their different geological differences or problems 6 floors up. But we all LOVE plants!!!

omg lori lol I love your markers ha ha
Also gardener I wish that was the squirrel over here lol the ones bothering me are black and scarry looking lol I love them too but wow your squirrel is so cute ha ha ha over here in Canada most are dark evil little devils
Since Sunday they stay away could it be the cds? Hummm or the spice but for sure the cds do move a lot with the wind so I think they may do the jobs by scarring them when they aproach the rail?
I ll check tonight when I get home
My issue is I leave the apt at 6:40am and get back around 9:30pm Monday to Thursday then Friday get home around 5pm so those buggers know I am not there most of the day time to chase them off lol
My niece sent me a picture of something she learn to make and I most share here. Imidiately I thought humm can u make me one with a hole for draining ? Ha ha ha

Here are a few pictures of my solar lights I was talking about in an earlier post.

Gardennerd- depends on the cactus. My red cactus flower lasted a week, most others open for one day and are done.

I planted all my seeds about 10 days ago. All my little hills have "babies" showing their faces. Hurrah!
Over the weekend my husband helped me put down newspaper and straw around my 29 pepper plants and my tomatoes to help with weed control as well as moisture retention. The neighbor closest to the garden side of the yard (who we had not yet met since they are newbies) peeked over the fence and said "hello." Then he asked, "What are you growing?" My lovely smart mouthed (but very sweet) husband quickly answered "Newspaper!" LOL Hi Neighbor! Welcome to my world! By the way I am comfy outside in a t-shirt and no foob. Too hot for that when working in the yard. Anyone else go outside in their yards that way?
The neighbor's parents moved here in the RV back in November the same week I had my UMX. (they were watching over the house and making it livable until the "kids" could move in this spring after returning to the US from a military tour.) I know they had to be surprised to see the bald headed one boobed lady walking around the yard so much. I was walking to help keep up my leg strength starting the day of the surgery. It suddenly occurred to me how I looked to the new folks. Hopefully they weren't able to tell I was flat on one side but if so. oh well. Again, welcome to my world! LOL!

I agree it's too hot to wear a foob while gardening. If people are upset, it's their problem. We got used to seeing people with only one arm or leg. I noticed a woman at Penney's one day - but only because I looked just like her. I wouldn't have noticed before.

Heidi - I got such a chuckle from your post. Hubby growing newspaper and you with no foob. And honestly, I had to pause and wonder what is a foob, ha,ha. . . until I read further. I would love to have you as a neighbor.
Enerva - I looked up picture of Canadian squirrels. You are right, the black ones do look a bit more devilish. Their shape is the same, so must be ours have the variety of colors and so it softens their appearance. Trust me . . . ours are devilish also. Your nieces cups/bowls are nice. Yep . . . just a few holes and it would be perfect.
Jazzygirl - Isn't it a shame that some of the prettiest blossoms don't last long. Nature is such a tease. We have such high humidity most of the year that cacti are just not as easy to grow for me. I have a dessert Rose that I keep alive on the brink. If I put it outside, its gets spider mites, I brought it inside, nursed it back to health and it sits in my sunny kitchen window . . . but in the house, the temperature is to cool for its liking, I guess. I've not found it a good location as of yet.

Heidi, I put a plastic sandwich bag over a dozen marble sized apples a few years ago. What you do is pick out how many fruit you'd like to have (all of them) place the sandwich bag over the fruit and loosely tie it closed, leave room for air to circulate around the fruit. As the fruit grows you loosen up the tie. You'll end up with bug free fruit every time. I'll do it next year as I should be well on the road to being back to somewhat normal?? Planting newspaper! Sounds like my response to my hubby 2 years ago when I put cardboard boxes down in the garden then dumped wood chips on them to help loosen up the soil in time for planting. Hubby asked what I was doing and I said planting trees of course! I love, love, love your lights! I very seldom get dressed dressed, I'm usually in my pjs when working out in the garden. My friends and delivery guys are used to it. No need for explanations or feeling embarrassed, my bald head is a dead giveaway!
Enerva, I love the bowls and cups your niece made! They'd make perfect planters! Hopefully the squirrels have learned their lesson and have found another neighbor to terrorize!
I spent 4 hours riding around on Sporty the lawnmower today. It took forever but I got the whole yard mowed. I'll be surprised if I get anything done tomorrow as I'll be to sore to move! I get my port removed next Friday! Yay me! lol

Picking up the last of my plants at the greenhouse in the morning. Since I am going through radiation I cannot go in the greenhouse or sun. They gathered the plants today to help me. I will work in the morning and evening shade in the garden the weekend over so I will be done planting for now. Beans are up and need thinned. Very late start for me, usually I have to cover them in cold weather.
Lori, your garden is mighty happy! I tried it one year and had great luck with potatoes and onions.
Gardennerd, she does have a sense of humour.
This is from winter, the squirrel actually was knocking food out on purpose to feed the turkey beneath him. Or was he throwing handsful of seed AT them?
0 -
Well I won't have to water the garden today, had quite a bit of rain with the thunderstorms that came through last night
0 -
Bluebird - that is such a cool picture with the squirrel and the turkeys. Love it! How long is your treatment?
Mommyof2- I know, isn't it great when it rains. I always feel like the plants do so much better from mother nature watering them, then from my hose.
0 -
Yep, it sure saves on the water bill
0 -
MOmmy I am gently envious of your rain. We were supposed to get rain today but then I heard the weather this morning and our chances went down a lot. I agree that the plants do much better with rain than our water from the hoses. I rushed out before heading to work and attempted to water most of my things in pots as it is too hot here to go more than a day or day and a half without watering. I love potted plants but the chore of watering is not my fun.
Enerva, I like those pots your niece made. How cute are they!?
Gardennerd I would love to have a gardening neighbor as well as a sister survivor nearby. :-) I think we would have fun together...as we would with any of our gardening sisters. :-)
Lori, I have not used sandwich bags before to save the apples from bugs. However when I was putting some things away in my new shed (YES, DH finally let me use it and put shelving up) I found some paper bags that I had bought many years ago for just such a purpose. Oh well, at least I will be able to find them for next year. LOL The apples don't seem to be my problem as much as the peaches and pluots. I had to laugh too at your tale of "planting trees."
Bluebird, your picture of the squirrel feeding the turkeys was funny. I tend to agree though that instead of feeding them he was throwing the seed to chase them away from his restaurant.
Almost the weekend again. That is when I will do the deep watering for the garden. I will probably need to resort to using the sprinklers out there. I like to stand and hand water with a hose, but the heat is just too tiring any more. We are projected to stay in the high 80s to mid 90s for at least the next week. Luckily no 100s yet. A few years ago we had over 90 straight days of triple digit temps.

I am more than a week behind in reading posts. I will try to catch up but I'm delighted to see so much activity. Here are a few of my bloomers from our spring planting and my some of my largest hydrangeas. We lost one rhododendron but just got our money back for it because Lowe's has no more and it's getting too hot to put in new plants.

Your top picture with all the blues is so peaceful and serene. I want to pull up a chair and sit there with a book.
We got very lucky in the rain department yesterday. We had almost 4 inches of rain which is our average June total here. Lots of streets flooded in town but I was excited not to have to water the garden this weekend. Now I hope that wasn't the last drop for us to see this month.

Scottie, I'm there with Heidi, pulling up a chair to enjoy the serenity of your garden.
I'm envious of the rain others have gotten. They keep calling for rain here but nothing yet.
I'm not sure what this raccoon was doing but he's sitting in my empty planter box. An hour later and he's still there! I'll have to put kitty kibble in there tomorrow night. I've been trying to download a picture of him but it's just not happening tonight :-(

Scottiemom - Love your pics. Top picture . . . is that an oak leaf hydrangea directly above your hearon? I love the flower pattern. Not to mention I love your hearon also.
