Hi friends- I love how busy and happy this thread is this time of the year with blooming flowers, trees, and shrubs, plus the birds and more. It is very hot here now and been watching the gardens closely while also being careful with the watering due to the drought here in the west. We had a good soaking rain last weekend and expect monsoon summer rains to start soon, but last year, my garden fried in the heat and so I put in a few more heat hardy plants and expanded the drip system an few places. My front rock garden (which really gets the worst of it with the afternoon sun) seems to be doing well. Also sharing a couple photos of the last of the blooming cactus and my red hot poker.

Warrior, I like your project for the birds. I'm trying to figure out an area for a bath, feeder etc too, now that my gardens are pretty established. We've added a lot of different plants over the last year, and I'm already noticing greater diversity of birds coming to our yard. Creating habitat is a good thing 🐦

Kiki, We have our feeder between a couple of trees (one almost bush-like) so the little ones can hide if predators show up. Same with the bird bath. We do have hawks, falcons and eagles around here, so the little guys have to be careful. They are fun to watch. Sparrows crowd around the feeder and fuss about who gets to eat while chicadees wait turns politely.

Warrior- peppers already? I’m jealous, most of my pepper plants are struggling this year.
I harvested my first zucchini of the season today! I should have some squash ready in a few more days.
I’ll try to get some pics of my lilies this weekend to post.

Wren, your setup for the bird bath and feeder sounds like a good one. I will be sure to give them some cover. Must be fun to watch those sparrows and polite chickadees! We have finches that behave like the sparrows 🐦

I bought these last week for a steal, we don’t usually have pink here, so I doubt they’ll stay pink. Now I just have to find a good spot for them

Got all my plants in the veggie garden supported or staked up before it got very hot out. While I was working in the garden I was delighted to see my peas are growing pods already and I have some tomatoes starting to grow!

There's nothing for scale in these pics, but that big zucchini plant is almost to my hip. The tomatoes are to my chest. You can see squash hiding in the second box. Unfortunately, that zucchini shouldn't be there. It was a case of mistaken identity, planted it with the cukes, which you can't even see behind it! Each of these boxes is roughly 12 x 3 feet, made from old deck wood.

Peachy, Hydrangeas change color depending on the acidity of the soil. You can add things to make it more acid or alkaline and control the color. I love that pink. I hope you can keep it that way.

Peachy, that is a cute little helper you have there. And I love the pink hydrangeas!
Scottie, you have one of my favorites, butterfly bush. The orange flowers I posted awhile back are Asiatic lilies. You can buy the bulbs, or you might see them sold at Easter. If you buy them at a flower stand, just plant them in your garden when they finish blooming and they'll do fine.
Today we had to put screening over our blueberries, as the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks are getting very interested in them. Looks funny but it works:

Sooo much yard work to do, but the heat has been limiting how much work I can do out there...so frustrating. Normally I have no problem with summer, but these darned meds have me all screwed up temperature wise and after 20 minutes or so in the sun, it's back into the a/c for me. Sigh... at least we have a/c.

Was checking my veggie garden this morning to see that I have cukes growing

zucchini plants are huge this year. Heat is taking its toll on the bell peppers ( they slow down when temps are in the 90s or above) and zucchinis are so big, they are blocking the sun from a few tomato plants Cucumbers, which we grow verticals, are over 7 feet tall.

Wow Dodgersgirl! What a year for zucchini and squash and pumpkins! Maybe that’s what’s wrong with my peppers, I didn’t know that. I always assumed peppers liked heat, guess not.
My one misplaced zucchini is shading the cukes near it. The others are planted in a separate area of the yard because I know they need the room!
I have already harvested squash and zucchini several times. Mine are usually all dead by the time other family members are harvesting theirs, not sure why, but it works out ok.

Cpeachymom— usually we have tomatoes by the 4th of July but so far this year, mostly cherry tomatoes are red and ripe while the heirlooms are green and growing.
Cucumbers are slowly producing. Maybe heat related?
