tinkerbell I do not know where you live but I know where we live here it is legal and if you have "medical card" you pay less for things than people who go in for pleasure purposes. I know it can get expensive too.

    tinker bell,

I have used cannabis and cannabis products for years! I had a medical card originally and the my state went recreational as well. If the product your son gave you is working, be sure to check the label or packaging to see what the CBD:THC ratio is as this will guide you in future purchases. For example it might say 18:1, meaning 18 parts CBD to 1 part THC. Then you can branch out to other edibles! If you are in a legal state just Google to find a local dispensary and chances are they will have a website. Peruse the web site to learn about buying from the dispensary and the services they offer. In my area, delivery is common! I rarely go to the dispensary anymore. Also, many places offer quick pickups for on line orders. Have a look at this thread. You can post questions there as we all learn from each other. I am not claiming any expertise. I have just been using cannabis for longer than most on bco. Take care

GR4C1E, oh my, that co-worker is...a real piece of work. I do love Alice's suggestion of how to appropriately respond to such ridiculousness!

Ah, sleep, that flighty temptress - I'm currently taking a CBD/THC tincture, dark cherry juice, an older antihistamine (chlorphen-something), and sometimes melatonin. I've ordered some CBD/THC gummies to try, also. I've never had so much trouble with sleep (or anxiety) in my life, so I'm going to keep trying stuff until I get something to work fairly consistently. I haven't felt high from the THC, it's a pretty low dose, but I can imagine that at some point in the future feeling high won't be a bad thing.

    SF Cakes,

I might have mentioned this before but Yummi Karma brand makes a sleep formula, sub-lingual marshmallow flavored tincture, called Lights Out! It high THC but come with a dropper so you can start with a very small dose. I usually don’t have trouble sleeping but when I do this does the trick and fairly quickly too. It’s sold in dispensaries in Santa Clara Co. so you might find it at a dispensary in the city.

Yes, thank you, exbrnxgrl, I did look at that product, but I was slightly freaked out by the high THC content! I hadn't had any THC for 20+ years, so I wanted to start very low. I'm trying a Papa & Barkley sleep tincture tonight. I appreciate your knowledge in this area!!

  • GoldensRbest, I am another that probably (certainly my dr would say so) drinks too much. I drink at least 3 light beers a night and can't find that I really care.

I caved last night, drank some and slept all night! Thanks for all the insight. I will try some melatonin. I've done edibles before too when hubs was sick and we had a pretty good supply, they worked well for me. Another option to explore.

Couple of vents for today: Still peeved as I put the check in the mail for the ER doctor not being in my insurance network! Can you imagine having an emergency and having to ask if the person treating you is in your network!!? uh no! Paid another bill and this should be it for the year. My out of pocket is well over the $3500. deductible now, close to $4K. That's expensive and it's just going to keep going!!

I've also had a rash of deaths and a good friend just started treatment for stage iv non small cell lung cancer. She texted me yesterday to say she mentioned my name to the nurse saying how I was helpful to her with my cancer knowledge (wish I didn't know any of it!), and this nurse remembered my husband-the character he was. Going to 2 funerals tomorrow. Lost an Uncle yesterday.

I do have good news: Sister had CT and bone scans instead of PET this time, and still everything is stable so her MO is confident in staying off the Ibrance. She will be going on 9 months with just letrozole and no progression!! The arimidex and Xgeva shots worked for almost 6 years before they didn't.

We had issues before when DH had to be admitted to the hospital and one of the docs was not on his insurance and was "out of network" as well. Hospital was and everything. You would think if the one is on there they all should be but others have privledges there as well even if out of network. Does not seem fair and when you are in that situation you do time have to figure it out since you need to get you loved one cared for right away.

Okay, I need to rant. Our Premier has been diagnosed with cancer (lump in his throat but no details on what kind of cancer however he did have bladder cancer about twenty years ago). I sincerely wish him well but a comment from our Provincial Health Officer on the news sent me off the deep end. She expressed her view that she expects him to do well since he has such a positive attitude. WTF? This coming from a physician? Makes me crazy. So, apparently I have MBC because I had a bad attitude?

Goldensarebest, I’m with you on the wine consumption. I enjoy wine and will be damned if I’m going to give it up. There are times when I abstain, particularly if drugs are impacting my sense of taste or when I’m not feeling super but enjoy it when I can with zero guilt. Liver is doing fine despite the mets and I know there will come a time when I likely won’t be able to have it or won’t want it. Until then…. Cheers! 🍷🍷

I feel a little less guilty about my nightly glass (or 2) of wine. I don't have expensive tastes and if someone gives me a nice bottle, I'll wait until I'm with friends or family to open it. DH doesn't drink at all. Just his choice.

ctm, I'm glad you slept all night. That's a big deal! Congratulations! :) I'm so sorry about the deaths, sorry about the stupid ER bill, but happy that your sister appears to be stable.

    Have a great Friday, everyone.

Alice you always have the best responses! I’m sick of people telling me how I caused my cancer because of food choices or lack of physical fitness or something like that. “Everything” gives you cancer nowadays

ctmb, we had the same situation last November when dh went to ER in great pain. Tests revealed a ruptured appendix, quite serious as it can cause sepsis and even death. On-call surgeon did a great job and after four days in hospital, dh went on to make a full recovery. The hospital stay was covered by insurance but not the doctor. His bill was $6,000. Worth it to save a life of course, but wtf? Why in the world would the doctor, whose office is located in the very same hospital, not accept the same insurance? This kind of trip to the emergency room isn't the time to say, “Hey, let my dh lay there writhing in pain while you call around on the Sunday morning after Thanksgiving to find a surgeon who takes his insurance because we'd just like to save ourselves six thousand dollars if at all possible."

SadieServant: I missed that truly stupid comment from our Chief Medical Officer. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I wish our Premier well. I mean, really, if a good attitude was all it took think of the survival rate.

ctm: I am sorry about your losses. How much grief can a person be expected to bear? Then there is "network" and "insurance" Don't get me started on that!!

Then there are those ads from America Big Pharm with the lies about Canada negotiating drug prices which results in Canadians being denied treatments. LIES!!! The first ads named Canada but it seems to now be saying "Some countries". What are they saying? "Don't let Medicare get a $32.00 price tag for your insulin instead of $320.00" Prior to Covid there used to be bus runs up from the states to Ontario to buy insulin.

I am angry on behalf of my American sisters. I am puzzled as to why people are so afraid of universal health care.

As for drinking: Bottoms up! I enjoy a glass(es) of wine. I am reluctant to give up my weekend Martinis.

Bonfire Night in the UK today. "Remember, remember the 5th of November"

Thanks for all the tips on THC/CBD. Last night I had two glasses of wine instead, and that helped me sleep. I've had trouble sleeping in the past, when I'm really worked up about something, but it's never been this bad before. It's good to know I'm not alone in this.

Oh the edibles my son gave me are 2:1 CBD to THC. He did some research and that was his recommendation. Which, cracks me up, that I am taking marijuana advice from the son I used to warn about the dangers of drugs. My husband calls him my "dealer".

(my son is 30, and a bit of a connoisseur - we gave him an expensive bottle of whiskey for his birthday, which we joke about, since we drink the $5/bottle wine from the grocery store)

DivineMrsM, I've had it happen many times where I'm hospitalized for something and I'm assigned whatever physician is on call at the time (like anesthesia), and later get smacked with an "out of network" bill. When I write a letter to my insurance provider describing the circumstances--I certainly have no say in what anesthesiologist I get--they have always allowed it and paid them according to what "in network" would have paid. I don't know if that would help in your situation, but actual letters written to actual people seem to be more effective than phone calls.

    elderberry,

I don’t really understand why universal healthcare is such a boogeyman in the US. Some fear it is socialism, a word which many find very frightening. Others argue that they don’t want to wait long periods of time for care. Opponents of universal healthcare entertain people with horror stories of people waiting months or even years for things like knee replacements. Those of us who have good health insurance have gotten a bit spoiled but we are certainly paying the price for it. Those who have no health insurance? Bon chance!

Personally, I am willing to sacrifice some of the convenience I have, because I’ve had good insurance, to help make sure that my fellow citizens all have access to health care.

Well I sure hope no one looks to the UK system as the stand up model of universal health care - its a political football and a money pit with relatively poor preventative care and some pretty terrible health outcomes in certain areas. My last GP practice didn't even have a working telephone system. The UK and US systems are two extremes - pick any of the European systems where its universal care with a top-up payments/insurance for 'extras' and that would work better than either of these two systems.

I can see where opponents are getting the 'years long wait!' for a knee replacement messaging though - its absolutely the truth in this country, but Ive also watched partner's father struggle for years to be properly treated for back/knee issues in Sweden. People put up with the waiting and degrading care because "thank god we have universal health care otherwise we would be paying thousands like in the US!". Maybe, but you are also spending multiple years in pain with worsening mobility - that has a cost as well.

Its definitely Bonfire Night here - fireworks shooting off left, right, and center. Last night was Diwali and folks were shooting off fireworks left, right, and center so who knows who is shooting off what and why at this point! At least the cats are relatively chill about it and aren't bothered too much.

  • If a good attitude was all it took to beat cancer, cancer patients would be the happiest and most positive, upbeat people in the world. Uh, no. People who say these things really don't use brains at all (I am kindly assuming that they have functioning brains).

cm, I'm glad your sister's results were good. And I'm sorry about your uncle and that you continue to have funerals to attend. There have been way too many funerals.

And just exactly what does this woman being a breast cancer “conquer “ have to do with her ability to call a football game?

Some years a Canadian snowbird came to the dog park on the regular. He could barely walk, used canes. Said he needed a new hip, but was on a wait list back home, wouldn’t happen for quite a while yet. He appeared to be in a lot of pain. Poor man. The dog was old too, got around better than he did

sbelizabeth, wow, I never considered writing to the insurance company explaining the circumstances and asking the bill to be paid! I’ve got most of the bill paid off so I don’t think it would benefit us now, but if it happens again (tho hopefully not), I most definitely will be writing to see if the insurance company would cover the costs. Thanks for the tip!

DivineMrsM, a previous doctor's office told me to call the hospital and surgical staff's office, tell them the bill is too high and I can't pay it. You can often negotiate the cost, and even ask for a super low payment schedule, especially when you are cooperating to pay the bill. Another time I was even advised to leave a clinic, walk back in, and sign in without providing insurance information because I could pay straight up out of pocket a lot less than what I would pay with insurance. You never know unless you ask, but I would think it's important to always negotiate an ER bill

I won't defend Canada on its wait lists. Unfortunately it leaves people waiting in pain. If an issue is life or death you get seen fast. One issue is a shortage of physicians, especially GPs. My issue is the cost of RX meds. Or in the USA an insurer deciding whether you get a medication or treatment paid for. I may wait for a test but I have never been denied one or charged..

  • Spookiesmom, that annoys the hell out of me! Are we just a disease? Her breast cancer has nothing to do with football. There is a woman coach for some football team that is gay. OF course that has to be speculated on. blah, blah. My BIL called her a dyke. I said have you forgotten your niece (my daughter ) is gay? What an asshat. Ok not going to think about THAT anymore cause I will just get mad again.

sbelizabeth, that is an excellent suggestion. I had to write to an insurance company once. They wouldn't pay for an injury my husband had because they were unable to get the ER info in a timely manner. That was because the hospital computer system had been hacked. A phone call didn't help but a letter and an article from the newspaper did.

Hospitals can be pretty cool about negotiating costs outside of insurance, at least teaching hospitals. When I was pregnant years ago, my work decided I was a liability because I had a bleeding issue that required a night in the ER. So, no health insurance. I wasn't married, so Now-hubby couldn't cover me on his. When I registered as a clinic patient at the hospital, it was before I lost my job. Later, closer to my due date, one of the workers noticed I wasn't working and said, "Oh, I wish you'd have told us when it happened and we'd have set up a lower cost for you!" It was still a more-or-less manageable amount for us, and I had a fabulous OB-GYN who to this day is one of my all-time favorite doctors, but I liked their willingness to be flexible on costs. And I never got charged extra for a few more ER visits and a boatload of tests and imaging, just the flat agreed amount.

I can't imagine every walking up to anyone and saying anything like that. If there is no chance it was sarcasm, then it sounds like a workplace hostility and should be reported to HR.

A friend's son, early twenties, had an emergency appendectomy. No insurance. They were making payments on a ridiculous hospital bill when I mentioned they should visit the hospital's billing department and just ask if they could negotiate the bill for a young, uninsured patient. NO PROBLEM, they said, and the bill magically was cut by two-thirds with a very reasonable payment schedule.

    It never hurts to ask.

  • bcincolorado
    bcincolorado Member Posts: 4,758

Most are willing to work with someone who has issues if they are willing to make payments I know. I've been there myself before and had good luck as well and got it cut a lot as well by being able to pay it off in a certain time period.

Should I have this insurance issue happen again, I will ask. Good tip! I can't imagine have a whole surgery out of network bill! Mine was just the ER doc, everything else was in-network so it wasn't a real hardship to pay.

I am still expecting to possibly get 1 last collection notice for my portion from 2019! Should they do an end of year dump as they have in the past what I have found was one collector tried, then it would go to a 2nd collector who then offered a settlement of either payment over several months or a lump sum at a reduced cost. At least that has been my experience since I had the good fortune of being diagnosed in Dec. 2017 hitting that years deductible with all the tests, and then the nightmare of waiting for the 2018 insurance information to get pre-approvals for more tests/surgery. Be glad you didn't know me then. I was a raving mad woman. Both my daughter and I called everyday until they finally gave the info. I mean, if your policy is effective Jan 1, you should have the card or at least something by that day. Not 10 days, or 2 weeks later! Now I know better and I don't schedule anything the 1st 2 weeks of January!

Lord knows what I will be offered for next year. I hope it's not too much more. I won't settle for less coverage either, I have the middle of the road plan as the cheaper one has a really high deductible. Doing my best to not let the insurance company dictate my healthcare, but it's happening here. Prolia for example. I can't get it approved so I'll just wait for something to break!? I'm getting a dexa scan next month (you know I have to schedule it after the 2 yr. mark of the last one, or else!). There are wait times as well. I'm still waiting for a phone call to schedule an endoscopy since August. I'm not pushing since I'm doing well and not having any trouble eating or swallowing, but it would be nice to get it in this year since I've reached my deductible. OK, I better stop now. Going for a walk.

I know we ran into it once with DH at the hospital when he needed emergency surgery and then we found out after the fact the surgeon was considered "not in his network" even though in the same hospital and on call . He needed it though to save his life so we dealt with it.
