I am so glad to hear that Mayor Beppy got outside today!! May you continue to feel better each day and I hope you are enjoying the summer weather. Kcat, welcome. Pull up a pillow and join me in the tree house. Funthing, I am praying for you.

Welcome Kcat. I hope you get answers soon. Waiting is awful.

Yep, the ducks do poop everywhere. We are lucky that we only have one visiting us this year!

I spent the night teaching my 11th grader how to write an essay. So frustrating. My other son was in all the gate classes and he learned how to write essays. The 11th grader is in both honors and regular classes and he never learned to write essays?!

I have another follow-up appointment with my MO on Wednesday. Dexa scan results and discussing whether I'm doing better on Exemestane than I was on letrozole. At least I hope that's all we have to discuss!

We are raising a generation of kids who can code, solve quadratic equations, draft winning fantasy sports teams, type faster than the best secretaries of yore and carry on an entire conversation using only emojis--who also cannot write legibly in cursive, spell, punctuate, balance a checkbook, identify their Congressmen, explain federal separation of powers or write an essay. And yet we are told that instruction in the humanities is a mere frivolity!

    Good morning, crazies!

Poppy, I feel your pain. Though in our house last night, the 11th grader had to write the essay in French, so I was no help whatsoever.

Sandy, I think the pendulum is swinging back, at least somewhat. I also think spellcheck has done a great deal to dumb down all of us, not just our kids (says she who has changed "perception" back to "Herceptin" on these boards more times than she can count). And don't get me started on Common Core.

Beppy, hoping you are starting the day without pain!

Well, I have just voted. The polling place was very busy, the usual mix of yuppies, long-time residents, the retired, little kids on scooters, and so forth. Glad to see so many people out and about!

Have a lovely and delicious day....

Sigh...off to see PS today at 2pm. While there we will see when he can join my BS in removing the lumps and while at it...I would love for him to do some revision work on this "FAT" that hangs on both sides of my chest wall. Wish I can get these implants taken out and he remove all "my" fat from my stomach area. Wishful thinking...

{{{{{Slow}}}}}...thinking of you and hope you are comfortable and pain-free.

Poppy...I feel the pain....I work with PhDs who don't know how to write....I hope that Rain is correct that the tide may be turning, but I am not sure. In fact, after reading Sandy's post I am feeling guilty for even wearing an emoji mask at our get together! :-)

Anyway, good morning to all the crazies. It really feels like summer here. Hot. Going to get hotter. Sunny. Birds chirping. Meanwhile, i will be inside all day (running workshops to teach those young PhD holders how to write, actually :-))...very busy all week at work. Then a hectic weekend, but Sunday afternoon vacation starts! We are flying out of LAX Monday am: wish I had time to see all the SoCal crazies but I will barely get down there in time to have dinner with the grandkids and then try and sleep before a very early flight. Mexico, here I come! I won't be able to give travelogues of the quality that Sandy has, but hope to post a few pics.

I may have mentioned in the past that we are duck obsessed in my house. Of course, none of the wood, ceramic and plastic ones I own poop! :-)

Welcome Kcat, pull up a chair on the porch. Our Mayor is recovery from surgery so she can't greet you personally, but I can promise you that she is keeping you in her thoughts. That is just the way she is.

(((((shorfi)))) and ((((proud)))) and all of you!

Octo, fear not: emojis are for masks!

Summer was yesterday. Today it’s back to early-March-in-late-April. Tomorrow, deluge. Friday it goes back to late-Feb.-in-late-April. Weekend will be much like today. Put the sandals back on the shoe rack, back to loafers & socks. Put the light leather jacket back in the closet, haul out parka again. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Such is spring in Chicago.

With Passover coming up, my cousin sent me this. Enjoy!

THE TWO-MINUTE HAGGADAH, a Passover Seder for the Impatient, by Michael Rubiner

Opening Prayers: Thanks, God, for creating wine. (Drink wine). Thanks for creating produce. (Eat parsley).

Overview: Once, we were slaves in Egypt. Now we’re free. That’s why we’re doing this.

    Four Questions:

    1. What’s up with the matzoh?

    2. What’s the deal with the horseradish?

    3. What’s with the dipping of the herbs?

    4. What’s this whole slouching at the table business?

    Answers:

    1. When we left Egypt, we were in a hurry. There was no time for making decent bread.

2 Life was bitter, like horseradish.

    3. It’s called “symbolism.”

    4. Free people get to slouch.

A funny story: Once, these five rabbis talked all night. Then it was morning. (Heat soup now).

The four kinds of children and how to deal with them:

    Wise child--explain Passover.

    Simple child--explain Passover slowly.

    Silent child--explain Passover loudly.

Wicked child--browbeat in front of the relatives.

Speaking of children, we hid some matzoh. Whoever finds it gets five bucks,

The story of Passover: It’s a long time ago. We’re slaves in Egypt. Pharaoh is a nightmare. We cry out for help. God brings plagues upon the Egyptians. We escape, bake some matzoh, God parts the Red Sea. We make it through, the Egyptians aren’t so lucky. We wander 40 years in the desert, eat manna, get Torah, wind up in Israel, get a new temple, enjoy several years without being persecuted again. (Let brisket cool now).

The 10 Plagues: Blood, frogs, lice--you name it.

    The Singing of “Dayenu:

If God had gotten us out of Egypt and not punished our enemies, it would've been enough. If he'd punished our enemies and not parted the Red Sea, it would’ve been enough. If he’d parted the Red Sea--(remove gefilte fish from refrigerator)

Eat matzoh. Drink more wine. Slouch.

    Thanks again, God, for everything.

    SERVE MEAL.

Better reading than most books! ❤️❤️❤️ you ladies!

Four years ago, our school district was starting STEM academies to prepare the kids the world of science and math. Now they're starting arts Academy's. It's a strange world indeed.

Hi guys what about generic cancer Meds?

Does it concern anyone. I keep thinking crap I'm taking generic meds.

Pain meds and other drugs that are not responsible for saving lives should be allowed to be generic but . What heck.

I take the generics and don't think twice about them.

Here's a few photos from my quick spring break trip to the Grand Canyon. My oldest and youngest sons went with me. Every time they could, they had to get as close as possible to the rim! Boys!

Poppy beautiful. I was very close to the canyon one year while driving my son around looking at colleges.

Bryce Cannon by accident. Everyone was hell bent to get to their destination so while everyone was sleeping I took a detour. They woke up in awe. Drove from Nevada to Idaho then across to Seattle.

I have pictures of my niece and nephew doing the same thing at the Grand Canyon. There's also a very funny picture of my niece standing on an overlook during her trip to Peru with her boyfriend standing a bit back and holding on to her arm, because he was worried she was going to fall even if she wasn't!

Here's an "only in CrazyTown" moment for you. I've had a sore throat off and on since the end of March. At first my doctor thought it was viral, and it seemed to go away for a couple of weeks, but this weekend it came roaring back. I called again and asked for a strep test, which came out positive. I picked up some antibiotics this evening, and thought about how nice it was to have something that was easy to fix! I miss those days when my medical problems were simple and short lived!

oh Katy, I had the ultrasound on my mental calendar for Thursday!!! But pockets cross the space-time continuum so I was there today also, right? I hope it wasn't too stressful and that the results come back all good! In your pocket!

Oh, Poppy--so gorgeous! Which rim? One year when we visited Vegas, we took a small-plane tour out of Henderson to the West Rim, where the Hualapai Indians had constructed an encloses Plexiglas platform jutting over the edge (pretty scary); they fed us a SW BBQ lunch and led us on a nature-and-conservation hike.

Katy, which beach is that? My favorites on the OR coast are Cannon, Devil’s Postpile & Boiler Bay.

Sandy, that is Port Orford. Way south. It's a cute little town with a working dolly dock and a fair amount of good places to eat. About 1 1/2-2 hrs north of CA border. In other words, nowhere! This explains why there are usually few footprints in the sand..

Those are phenomenal photos, both of the Grand Canyon and of Oregon. And I LOVE the guys in both of yours, Poppy! For what it's worth, I sent my little contrarian to a STEM high school--because he's always loved science--and he responded by throwing himself into the humanities and is now talking about an English and/or history major. Sigh. I love the humanities but also want him to be employable. (Can you tell we're in the thick of college visits?)

Katy, hope the ultrasound went well!

Cubbie, hooray for easily fixed problems! Sounds C-R-A-Z-Y to be glad for a strep throat, and yet....

Sandy, fun seder. I remember as a kid being completely annoyed by the seder because it was so non-linear. We go to one where the narrative has been reworked by a cousin of mine who is a writer. Much more logical.
