GMAFoley, there may be an outside chance my husband & I could be up for a PNW getaway this Oct. (the FAR-West folk conference is in my old stomping grounds of Bellevue, WA--where I practiced law for 3 years); and we would most likely fly into Spokane, perhaps visit Traci & Peggy, drive along the Columbia Gorge (stopping at Maryhill Winery) to Portland and perhaps do a side trip to Eugene to visit a couple of ex-Chicago friends before heading north to the conference & flying home from Seattle or even Vancouver. My singing partner can't afford to go to the conference with me, so I would probably not be booking gigs en route (though I'm always up for doing a house concert), but Bob hasn't been to OR or WA since 1990.
But right now I’m in shock, and not in a good way. Got a bulletin from the temple that my office manager (from when I practiced law) died suddenly last night at only 80. She & I shared the same PCP & MO (she had a lumpectomy and just letrozole, due to her age) and I’m pretty sure from what our receptionist told me it was probably a massive MI or stroke. Sadly, her husband (my legal mentor) is 87 and disabled from his own stroke 4 years ago. I’ll know more after the funeral tomorrow and shiva on Sunday or Monday. May her memory be for a blessing.

Pray for her husband--she was his rock after his own stroke, so much so that she stopped admitting herself to the hospital (she practically had frequent-flyer miles there) for her kidney stone attacks after his stroke. He is a sweet, sweet man--he hired me to help with the caseload of his then-associate, who had AIDS (back in the day when HIV+ people often lost their jobs). When the associate became too ill to work, even from home, my boss kept him on the payroll full-time to help with living expenses as well as keep his medical insurance. Under the dictionary entry for “mensch,” you’d likely find his picture. And she was the matriarch of the family, as well as of the office (after he stopped practicing law and I retired, the rental-property-management component was the only business).

Sandy, Sorry for your loss. What wonderful words you shared about your friend and her husband. I was working in a lab doing AIDS serology testing way back in the day. AIDS patients were treated so horribly, in so many ways. Nice to hear of someone treating someone with such compassion and kindness.

Ducky and Shorfi, So glad you got to meet Beppy. She is amazing! Wish I could be there... Maybe when the kids are grown. Although they need me less and less, I'm trying to spend time with them and make memories!
Beppy also saw our Blondie!
And today she was meeting rainy!

AND the Beppy (accompanied by her incredibly nice DH) grand American tour continues! We met for drinks and high-calorie goodies in a little tea-shop in Brooklyn this afternoon before speeding the happy couple on their way to Wilkes-Barre, PA, where they're staying the night.
This was taken outside the school where I pick up my CSA share....
So so so so so so WONDERFUL to meet the lady who started this terrific thread! And I got to hear all about the Philadelphia stop on the tour (waving at Ducky and Shorfi). I am a little wistful that she didn't pack all of you west coast women into the back seat, but maybe next time!

Rainny and Slow, what a great pic!! you both are gorgeous! I SOOO wish I had been there! Next road trip...
Meanwhile, back here at home: my sister is doing somewhat better but is still hospitalized. Physically she is improving rapidly but she still has some short term memory issues. Meanwhile, she came down with shingles, poor thing. She likely will be released from hospital next week but she will need more rehab. It feels like a long haul but she is doing better.

SHINGLES IS THE WORST!!!!!....I had it once and hoping the shingle shot I got prevents me from ever getting it again......I slept on a air mattress not fully inflated which helped a little...lidacaine gel helped too...i had it on TWO dermatones.....

I finally noticed my memory is not as bad as when I had severe sepsis and the first 3 months after I got out of the hospital. I was in a deep funk and dark place when I could not remember shit!
ChiSandy sorry for the loss of your friend. If you get out West must get together.... I don't drive to Bellevue anymore as the traffic is a bitch on I-405! I live south of Seatac, Redondo Beach area.

Di, we lived in Seattle 1971-78. Bob was in the MD-PhD program at UW and I was in law school down in Tacoma at UPS (which law school became part of SU with a terrific bldg. on its Pill Hill campus). We lived in the Pacific Apts., married grad student housing, on the block of the Ave. between the ship canal and the tracks (now a trail). The apts. were apparently designed by Architecture Dept. students who flunked--flimsy, no cross-ventilation, inadequate wiring, micro-mini kitchens, etc. But they were cheap ($90/mo + $10 for furniture rental), clean, and came with a free assigned parking space. They were torn down to make room for a big honkin’ parking garage for Health Sciences across the Ave. I first practiced as a probate paralegal downtown and when I passed the bar exam, across the lake as an associate to first a 2-man firm which became a solo practice. Just before I had to decide whether to buy in as partner, my husband “matched” for his residency at U. of I. Chicago. I left Seattle kicking & screaming (you can probably still see my fingernail marks in the tarmac outside one of the gates at Sea-Tac). I was last there in ’99 for the dedication of the SU Law School bldg. (the last year of my term as Midwest Alumni Rep.). I was shocked to find that despite the Eastside tech boom, there were apparently no new roads built. The drive from Fall City (where I used to do Fri. morning traffic ct. call) to Woodinville (where I’d have picnic lunch at Ste. Michelle) used to take me about 20 min. When we went back on vacation with our then-toddler son in ’90, it took us 2 hrs.! And my last trip on I-5 from downtown to Sea-Tac was a traffic nightmare--far worse than anything I’ve encountered here or even in L.A. or NYC. I actually remember when 405 was a reasonable bypass!

well back from check up and review of my mri of back, seems stuff has changed and of course not for better but he is unsure yet on how to handle so new mri of neck aka cervical area, then he wants me to see neurologist

Getting sorta nervous about my mammo and BS' NP followup visit coming up Tues., as my cats have become even more obsessed with sitting on my chest rather than my lap. And Heidi, the black one, kneads my right breast when she sits on my chest at bedtime and purrs me to sleep. I've been hearing a lot lately (not just reading, but from a friend to whose sorority sister it happened) that because of their superior senses of smell, cats (and dogs) who have become familiar with their beloved humans' scent can detect subtle changes in body chemistry that could indicate tumor activity. Regardless of what they find, however, I'm pretty sure treatment can wait until after our Italy trip next month. You can still accumulate things no matter the state of your health, but accumulating experiences can become increasingly difficult and finite.
